A word from The Heritage Restaurant
The Heritage is one of the many classroom/laboratory facilities operated by the Secchia Institute for Culinary Education at GRCC. The restaurant is staffed by students in the Culinary Arts programs and is under the direct supervision of chef and table service professors.
During luncheon hours, your meal will be prepared and served by freshman students. The meals represent International Cuisine with
modern and classical touches. In the evening, The Heritage reopens to feature a relaxed atmosphere, more Continental Cuisine, and our sophomore students preparing much of your meal table-side. The food is wonderful.
The Secchia Institute for Culinary Education restaurants and kitchens are our classroom settings. We take pride in them. Our students prepare our meals daily with the finest seasonally available ingredients including home-styled baked breads, and taste-tempting desserts.
Our students and faculty thank you for joining our classroom and for your patronage.

This gem, hidden inside Grand Rapids Community College, is a great place for dinner (and probably for lunch, though we haven't had the chance to try that yet.) My husband and I are vegetarian and they have excellent vegetarian and vegan offerings. But we have also eaten here with carnivores who have been delighted with their meals, too. The chefs and waitstaff are beautifully trained and the meals are creative, but reasonably priced. Try to save room for dessert--they are amazing. We look forward to our next chance to dine at the Heritage.

This is a great way to experience unique foods and food preparations without feeling uncomfortable about the restaurant setting. Most of us are not comfortable in a restaurant in which the bill will be over 100 dollars. However, with the educational setting, we feel free to enjoy the food. The social structure is not as rigid, and you will not feel like you are offending the server by admitting that you only like the sweetest white wines. I enjoy taking my children here to work on table manners. They are 10 and 12, and it is a special treat to be on a date with mommy. The food is wonderful. The servers are kind and attentive. Overall, a wonderful experience!

We had dinner with friends and this restaurant easily earns 5 stars! The food is beautifully presented, hot and tasty. From the wine and the appetizers to the peach sorbet, the main entrees and the awesome desserts, we loved it all! Our waiter, Michael,, a chef-in-training, was personable and eager to please. The restaurant is bright and cheery, neat and sparkling clean, and the many windows provide a wonderful view. Everything about our dinner was excellent!

This was my wife and I, fourth visit to this restaurant. We love the idea of students learning their craft and being apart of that process. We both had full entrees that gives each of you a small plate/appetizer to share as well. They also did a table side preparation of grilled cheese. Very enjoyable to talk with each of the students who help prepare the food for you. Getting their background stories, experiences in class, etc. All the food was so full of flavors. Both our main dishes had juxtaposition of sweet and savory. Mango bread pudding with chicken breast. We each had dessert as well. Everything was so good. We did have a free entree coupon that came from registering on their website for my wife's birthday.

I have visited The Heritage Restaurant two times, once for dinner and once for lunch. Both times were wonderful. My fiance took me for dinner, to celebrate our one year anniversary. I did not know what to expect! Upon arriving I immediately noticed the feeling of the restaurant's atmosphere. It's is so very peaceful and quiet. The second time we visited was to meet with the officiator of our wedding, which was rather private event, and it was a perfect place to have a our private conversations. I am excited to visit again! The service is amazing and the food, which is delicious, is a work of art! For the exceptional cuisine you are served you cannot beat the prices. It's all just amazing!

This is a great place to go if you like fancy food without having to pay quite as much as you'd expect. It is always well prepared and interesting. The menu is available on line too so you can peruse it in advance if you like to know what your options will be. Since it is staffed by students in the Culinary Arts Program there may be a little learning curve, but they are always friendly and efficient.

I would highly suggest a lunch reservation or dinner reservation be b quick because reservations fill up fast. The offerings are delicious with every bite and artistically prepared. The food is prepared by culinary students under the direct supervision of Chef Angus - so know that your food will be well prepared. Even the wait staff are students that are learning the front of the house as well as the back. I have enjoyed the meals every time I have brought people to dine at the Heritage. Chef Angus is wonderful. He was the one who inspired my daughter to pursue her love for culinary! Book through OPEN TABLE today - you wont regret it. 5 star cuisine at 10.00 pricing.

The Heritage is the restaurant auxiliary to the Secchia Culinary Institute, so everyone in the kitchen is a student overseen by a master chef. The detail taken with regard to both ingredients and preparation is second to none--every dish a masterpiece. I had the best sauce mousseline ever. The students are all studying to be chefs, not maitres 'd. Our server was a fully polished diamond, but there were plenty of other students milling around, trying to provide a high level of service but without the requisite training or experience, with a deer-in-the-headlights look in their eye. Just part of the experience. No alcohol, but an amazing selection of tea and pour-over coffee, made table-side. I'll definitely be coming back!

The menu is varied and creative. The food is consistently delicious. Some dishes may be more to your liking than others, but in general, the food is far superior to the "best" (and highest priced) restaurants in town. The student waitstaff is courteous and friendly. The desserts are phenomenal. On a recent night, we had the amazing flaming apples and brown sugar over vanilla ice cream. There is just one downside--the service at the Heritage may be slow and/or the students may be less confident--based on how early in the term you go. Still, it's wonderful to see them gain confidence and help support them as they learn "the ropes."

So impressed with the atmosphere, the cleanliness, friendliness, greeters and the setup of the dining room. Welcomed the attention we were offered from the time we walked in; was introduced to the helpers, then the servers, even the chef when we asked. On both of my visits the servers were first: Stephanie (excellent help) who could rattle off any item with full description of ingredients and preparation. When told I was fussy about my food she immediately suggested some of the best choices available. Really appreciated that service. On the next visit, Dan was equally well versed. The variety of food offered and charged was well within my budget.

Until there is some experienced person directing the students at Heritage Restaurant to assure coordination and hot food, the experience will be middling at best. Each student has a delegated task, but there is no coordination or communication between posts. We saw no supervision taking place in the dining room, helping the students improve their technique and timing.

Overall, liked it very much and received good suggestions from all of the waitstaff. Drawback: I dropped my fork, and it took someone more than 3 minutes to bring a new one (and she needed a reminder). Salad plates should have been cleared before entrees were brought to the table - it should not be the patron's job to juggle plates. Also, menu changes had been made since the beginning of the semester - but they didn't bother to print new menus! I would expect a small print run of menus on a weekly basis, especially if chef is getting a special on some products. Even so, we will certainly be back.

This is a training ground for culinary students, and as expected the emphasis is on the food. Service is well-meaning, but not the kind of sycophantic pandering you get from a server gunning for a $30 tip. (Student servers are not allowed to take tips) So, great place to try out some unique fare at a reasonable price (I had the foie-gras creme brulee followed by the Wagyu filet-mignon), but not necessarily a place you want to take a date on a special occasion where you would want a little more atmosphere and 5-star service.

We have been to The Heritage several times before. The experience was always positive. We consider this experience an exception to their fine reputation. The waiter seemed overwhelmed. He was seating a larger party (10) when we arrived. It took 20 min. to take our order and it ended being taken by another waiter. Our waiter came by to confirm the order we had given. Somehow, he had not noticed that we had received/eaten our appetizer and brought it out again. We had to inquire about receiving bread. Our water glasses ran empty a couple of times before being filled. It took 40 min. for our entrees to arrive. Although we had mentioned our time constraints (to get to a show), we had to go to the desk for our bill. Next time...

The Heritage at GRCC is a student-operated restaurant which serves up high-end cuisine for the same price as a steak house. The menu is available online so you can decide what you want beforehand. I enjoyed the way that the menu breaks things down for you (small/large plate). I had a few pieces of the complimentary bread with regular butter and also a flavored butter (with bacon) and a small plate and was satisfied. The dessert offerings are brought around on a cart at the end of the main course by one of the students. They will explain what each dessert contains and you will be able to see what it looks like (we eat with our eyes too). I brought my family of 5 and the cost of lunch was around $60.

We love going to the Heritage restaurant. We got a few times a year. Since it's a teaching/learning restaurant the students really make a great effort to serve you well. I love finding out what the students will do after graduating. They are very nice and sometimes nervous, but all do a great job and put in the effort of great service. The food is outstanding. Chef Dunn does a great job with the kitchen students. We enjoy going out with our family and also taking friends and co-workers there.
