Diner Reviews
  • "Great food. Surprised the successful owner(s) have not purchased a small/short weather foyer, to prevent patrons (seated near the front door) from being subjected to the current outside temperature after all this time."

  • "The Helmand is one of my favorite restaurants. The menu, service and ambiance are always superb, and the prices are very reasonable considering the quality. It is easy to overlook this gem, but that's part of it's charm. "

  • "It has been said many times by many diners....The Helmand never disappoints. We make a point of going into Baltimore for dinner at The Helmand a few times each year, even though we live about 45 minutes of north of town. We're always very pleased, and we were happy as always during this visit. Highly recommend."

  • "Nothing more to say. The service was upscale friendly. The food was to die for. "

  • "The food is authentic- the experience is poor. Our middle table was positioned so we were too close to other diners. As servers passed through, they would brush against us while trying to squeeze past. Service was odd and rushed. At one point my husband had bread in his hand and one of the servers took his bread plate away. Our dinner plates were taken without asking before we were finished and we were too rushed to enjoy the meal. We were not drop-ins that they had tried to fit into their busy schedule. We had a reservation in advance and were not obnoxious patrons who were speaking too loudly or any such thing, so the rushed uncomfortable dining experience was confusing and a disappointment. "

  • "Took Customers there. They were from Los Angeles. They loved it! I loved it! We both travel often and eat at restaurants around the US and found the quality and preperation of the food to be terrific. The service was very friendly. The restaurant was full on a Wednesday night. I understand why. Great food, great presentation, great setup, good ambiance, terrific price...I will be back...often!"

  • "Everyone was very accommodating. When I told them the birthday girl was a vegetarian, they made separate plates for her without an additional charge. They also let us get a little rowdy, which was appreciated (although the other diners might not agree). Only thing was it was a little slow but I guess they may have thought we just didn't want to rush. Lovely place. Amazing food. Will definitely be back!"

  • "All our meals here have been consistently exceptional in quality, selection, and service. Delicious and fresh food; great vegetarian selections too. The pumpkin cake is a delight. Server and all staff are very friendly, efficient, and professional. Highly recommend!"

  • "Every delicious bite of the pumpkin appetizer drizzled with yogurt or the mantwo with a rich meat sauce was prepared with care. This is one of our favorite special occasion restaurants that we drive 45 miles to visit. All of the appetizers were delicious (and hastily passed around the table). The entrees were somewhat familiar in form to other Mediterranean cuisines but with a special twist that makes this Afghani restaurant such a gem. One of us will only order the grilled lamb chops, another always opts for the vegetarian plate with six distinct compositions. The rest of us graze the menu because everything from the lamb stews to the fish is a real treat."

  • "A large menu with many excellent choices. Our party of six was shared 4 appetizers and they were all flavorful and large enough to give everyone a nice serving. The entrees were equally successful and we were all happy with our choices. The service was reasonably attentive for a busy Saturday night and they happily prepared separate checks. Recommended without hesitation."

  • "Just moved back to Baltimore and rediscovered an old favorite! We love the food at Helmand. Its spices are exotic but it's not overdone; it's often quite subtle."

  • "The food is fabulous and so are all the staff. I've been there twice and gone with staff recommendations for my meal and I was thrilled both times!"

  • "The Helmand continues to offer wonderful food in an attractive, vibrant environment. Very flavorful food; reasonable prices. I listed noise level as moderate because it was loud but not that "hard" uncomfortable loud one can find. Only complaint is I felt like we were rushed...our order taken, bread brought immediately (good) and very soon our meals brought (not so good). This didn't impact the quality of the food as we all order items that were slow cooked and one would expect them not to be cooked to order, however, we felt as if we were encoouraged to "move along" to make room for the next guest. Although this is a testimony to how good the restaurant is. They could benefit from any expansion opportunities that might present themselves."

  • "You just gotta try it. Somewhere between Indian and Greek food. So nicely done, and affordable, but cloth tablecloths. My mom would approve!"

  • "Delicious food. Chicken with peaches, apricots, tomatoes, etc. with challow was delectable. A bit spicy. We ordered a side dish of spinach which was too peppery for my friend but fine for me."

  • "I usually start with the house salad with pomegranite vinagairette and then have CHOPENDEZ, very tender tenderloin served with pallow and delicious vegatables. My wife loves the pumpkin appetizer. This is delicious middle east food. I love the cardomen infused ice cream with rose water and rice noodles. A taste sensation. The half rack of lamb is the best I have ever had and their is stiff competion in Baltimore from the many greek restaurants and steak houses."

  • "We returned to Helmands after a long time and found that the service has become friendlier and more attentive. We ordered one lamb and one salmon dish, both of which were well prepared and delicious. The cocktails and dessert (ice cream with rice noodles) were good. We were impressed by the very fast service and friendly server who explained the dishes well."

  • "The only complaint I have is how you are packed in like sardines. The food is amazing. The service is by far some of the best I have had."

  • "I went to the Helmand for dinner having never tried this type of cuisine before. The restaurant was very busy but with reservations we were seated immediately. The service is prompt and very professional. Our server gave us suggestions about menu items when we asked questions about various dishes, etc. Vegetarian options were plentiful. The food arrived without undue wait and was delicious. The spices were rich and complex, but not "hot". Portions were just right - not the huge portions I often eat half of at restaurants. Overall an excellent experience. I look forward to my next visit."

  • "This in one of my most favorite restaurants. I especially like the pumpkin appetizer....although all of the items on the menu please and surprise. Food is slightly spicy in a really good way!"

  • "Great place to entertain your family for a special occasion. i had my father's 75th birthday party for 9 people, was really great setting for this event."

  • "Thank goodness we made a reservation! The staff at the Helmand is fantastic -- courteous and quick. We had a great table in the corner and an excellent meal. I could die happy if my rice was half as good as theirs. Portion sizes are perfect. This was my second trip and I'll certainly be back again."

  • "I have been patronizing the Helmand for quite a few years now. The staff is always warm and friendly. Going there is like visiting a friend. The food is consistently delicious and high quality with an exotic spiciness that never fails to enchant your taste buds. I have never had a dish here that wasn't superb! Highly recommended!"

  • "I made a reservation for a group of 10 at The Helmand and we were perfectly accommodated. The service was great, everyone was friendly, answered questions, and addressed dietary concerns (a friend we took has celiac) with no problems whatsoever. The food was amazing -- our entire party was happy with what they ordered and all of the food came out 100% accurately and perfectly cooked. I ordered the Mourgh Challow and it was incredible. My girlfriend had the Chicken Kabob -- which was also amazing. As other reviews have said, the Kaddo Borwani was great -- we ordered 3 as well as 2 orders of Banjan Borwani. --also, some of the best naan i've ever had. I very much look forward to returning to The Helmand again and trying other dishes."

  • "The Helmand Restaurant is a Baltimore Gem with outstanding meat and vegetarian choices. The outstanding Borawni's ( Kaddo Borawni and Banjan Borawni) are superb appetizers that we had with (among others) set the tone for our group of academics on a weekday night. On this visit, our main courses centered on lamb (kebab and loin) which were superb and complemented nicely by the Afghan bread, spinach and rice with the delicious cilantro vinaigrette. The special ice cream (cardamom) was fantastic. The wine list reasonable. Although the restaurant was packed, the service was fast and courteous and never intrusive. This is certainly one of Baltimore's best!"

  • "This was my first trip to a restaurant that has been here a long time. We went before the theater, and loved it. We will definitely be back. The waiter was helpful, the service was excellent, and the food was delicious. From the pumpkin appetizer to the cardamom flavored ice cream, it was great!"

  • "You have not lived until you've tried the pumpkin (order naan to go with it). Sweet and garlicky with a bit of cream mixed in. Heaven!"

  • "I brought an out of town film director to this restaurant and he loved it! This is the restaurant that Baltimore native's will readily claim is one of their "favorite" restaurants. It's a Baltimore institution."

  • "The Helmand has great food, terrific atmosphere and very good service. We ordered the pumpkin appetizer that was amazing- pan fried sugared and then has a yogurt sauce that adds tang, their Naan bread was delicious, my husband had a great soup and we shared a lamb dish with pallow ( cinnamony rice with raisins and carrots). The décor is appealing and comfortable- dark woods, flowers on the table, white linen on the table. Unfortunately we ran out of room for dessert as the portions are good. The food is Afghan but seems like a cross between Persian, Greek and Mediterranean. We will definitely go back as the Helmand has it all!"

  • "The food was phenomenal. Make sure you order the pumpkin appetizer and the special ice cream dessert!"
    Dined on 3/28/2014
  • "Everything we tried had great flavor and texture, from the pumpkin appetizer, through the lamb, chicken and veggie sampler entrees, to the 'special' cardamom ice cream. Every dish had some sort of fruit included, which blended well with the savory spicing. Parking in that neighborhood can be difficult, but it's worth the trouble (or the expense of a paid space in the lot next door) to eat here!"

  • "Had a very pleasant dining experience. Food was excellent. Wine list was about average, but had choices in several price ranges which was good. Great selection of desserts. Try the mango ice cream special! Would have preferred it to be a little quieter, but overall the dining experience was quite good."

  • "We had a great dinner at The Helmand. Our waiter was very helpful in chosing the wine and dinner selections. The pumpkin appetizer was wonderful!"

  • "I made reservations here as a last minute choice. I had no idea what to expect. I was so pleasantly surprised! The food was amazing and the price was right. Definitely can't wait to go back"

  • "The Helmand regularly provides excellent food at very reasonable prices. The voice level on weekends is high, and the restaurant is crowded. During the week things are calmer!"
    Dined on 3/29/2014
  • "Unfortunately, we were seated in the entrance hallway that starts at the front door. This meant that a steady crowd of people waiting for tables crowded around our row of hall tables. The constant arrivals hung over our table and the others in the row, and it was so loud we could not hear one another talk. There is no other waiting area. The food was good enough, it is always the same, but the portions are not generous. The waiters are competent but harried...no time to discuss dishes. Due to the prices, location, and consistency of fare, this restaurant does not have to be very concerned about keeping it's customers happy...there are always more walking in. Ask for the dining room or choose another restaurant."

  • "The Helmand is a date night favorite for my husband and I, and I had my birthday dinner there with a few friends last year. The service is always fantastic, the food delicious, and the prices are incredibly reasonable. The ambiance is romantic and upscale enough to impress. Try the Afghan "ravioli" and of course the baked pumpkin is a must. We'll keep coming back!"

  • "The Helmand is consistently a delicious Mount Vernon venue to dine. What can I say? I love this restaurant. I prefer the veggie food. My wife loves the meat. All terrific. If you don't eat here, you are missing out,"

  • "Very tasty food. If you enjoy northern Indian food, the menu will be comfortable, but intriguingly different. Noise level was dependent on the people around you. When we first arrived, we were seated near two energetic (but not obnoxious) tables. Although sitting at a two-top, the table was wide enough to make it difficult to hear each other. Once those parties left, the noise level was quite comfortable. My only regret was that my wife would only let me order a single entrée for myself. We'll be back to try more of the menu."
