A word from The Heathman Restaurant
The Heathman Restaurant is located in the heart of downtown Portland and in the midst of the city’s theatre district.

Executive Chef Michael Stanton uses the very best in seafood, steaks, game, and more: from line caught salmon to organically raised lamb….from heirloom tomatoes to the best berries and fruit available in the Willamette Valley. The Heathman Restaurant takes advantage of local bay shrimp and Oregon razor clams when they are at the peak of season, they use mushrooms unearthed and brought to the kitchen early each morning. The menu aspires to be a constant expression of the vast diversity of ingredients that Oregon has to offer.

The extensive and award winning wine list showcases the best of the Willamette Valley, Southern Oregon, Washington and the rest of the Pacific North West, as well as some of the best wines of Burgundy, Bordeaux, and all the classic New and Old World wine regions.

We had excellent service provided by David. He helped us select two fabulous local wines. The carrot risotto entree was vegan and it was, yes, delicious. Lovely iconic restaurant. The nearby bar area was quite loud with a game on the TV which detracted from the overall experience of the dining area.

Another great lunch at The Heathman -- the trout was moist and perfectly cooked. The rabbit terrine was, again, delicious. The only hiccup this time was my entrée arrived when I was only halfway through my appetizer -- otherwise everything was very nice. Look forward to returning.

Positives - food was great and server was very good, when you could find him. Negatives - kept on having to ask for small things i.e. coffee, sugar, milk - busboy (coffee pourer) was not very attentive and would disappear for a long time before we could get his attention for the next missing table item.

On first look this place is a total find. The menu doesn't blow you away with selections but on closer inspection the details are there. The food, including prep and presentation, are a cut above. The wine list is truly impressive, knockout quality with many (hopefully well-) aged wines, until your gaze shifts to the right and you behold the prices. Then I was truly knocked out, and not in the good way. As we live in the Green Valley appelation of the Russian River Valley I'm kind of a pinot snob. But these prices are way out of line especially for the quality at least for the PN. Found a decent unfiltered & unfined OR specimen & enjoyed the dinner, feeling only moderately offended when it came time to settle up.

  • A great birthday dinner

My husband selected the Heathman Restaurant for his birthday/retirement celebration dinner. We had a nice table next to the window. The server was attentive and helpful in recommending wine and dishes. My husband had rabbit ragu with pappardelle, and I had the braised pork shank. We were both very pleased with our entrees, and with the green salad that we shared. Our wines were excellent, although the price per glass is high. For dessert, we shared the pots de creme, a perfect ending for our meal. We find the Heathman to be a good place for special dinners, when you don't mind spending extra for the food that is carefully prepared and locally sourced.

Food: Sauce for Rabbit ragu parpardelle is INCREDIBLE! Wine: Was pleasantly surprised to find Cana's Feast's Counoise on menu - love that wine. Service: Arrive for pre-show dinner with reservations at five, show at 7:30, but friend called that they would be 1.5 hrs late. Switched to bar for early dinner and wait for friend. Happy hour was in full swing with various groups merging tables, nut not noisy. Service was Exemplary, especially when I explained situation. When my friend arrived even later than expected - waiter helped direct her to nearby garage from my phone, them staff has her food out quickly plus her glass of wine waiting. Made it to show on time thanks to their help.

We have never had a less-than-wonderful meal at the Heathman. My husband and I usually get different meals, and we are always both delighted. Thursday was another example--he with a delicious pork dish and me with wonderful halibut. Often one of the side dishes will be unconventional. This time it was some sunchokes in my halibut dish and they were amazingly good. I have a list of food sensitivities, and again the Heathman has never let me down. They take them very seriously and the chefs are very flexible and willing to do some customization.

I have to admit I was disappointed. Didn't realize that only brunch was served until 2pm on Sunday. The cocktail was not good but they did provide both us that had ordered it a new and different drink. 3 of the 4of us only found our meals adequate not super as we had thought. Ambiance was very nice. It is a great looking and functioning restaurant but we just weren't into the "brunch". My fault I should have checked that out prior.

The crab mango avocado salad is always a hit for me; and the razor clam appetizer, per recommendation by Steven, our server was also excellent. Even though I was in Portland for business, Steven made me feel like I was family and coming home to a great meal. I happen to be there on my birthday and he made the dinning experience special. He made me fall in love with Portland all over again.

The hostess was friendly both upon greeting us and as we parted for the evening. The hostess even when I asked for directions to the restroom, walked me part way to assure me in my way! Also the waiter assistant was very attentive to keeping water glasses full, clearing used plates and yet in a non-intrusive manner. It's nice to have that balance of just right amount of service. The salmon was wonderful and the best clam chowder we ever ate-- even better than what one may get at the coast!

Overall the cuisine is really good for Portland and this is usually a special place. The last visit was totally the opposite. When our soup arrived an extremely loud fire alarm meant to cause you to evacuate the building started to go off. I jumped up ready to leave but was informed after a few moments that it was only a test. It subsided after going off periodically for about five minutes. My entree arrived and the alarm started going off again. Having a headache from the previous episode, I left the restaurant.

Accommodating and attentive waitstaff transform meals here from good to great! Eggs benedict with lemony hollandaise was split to half scrambled/half poached so 2 could share. Fruit plate was changed to all berries at our request. Picky teen-agers raved over crispy strawberry Belgian waffles and real maple syrup. Blueberry pancakes were filled AND covered with fresh blueberries. Our coffee cups, hot chocolate cups and water glasses were never left more than half empty. Never felt rushed despite our lingering visit.

starting with a tasteless Bloody Mary, accessorized by a lone string bean, followed by a spongy omelette filled with flavorless spinach and mushroom, requiring salt but the salt shaker on the table was empty, coffee refills which needed to be asked for, as well as the cream, and jarred jams in a city famous for its farmers market just blocks from its restaurant. management should visit tasty 'n sons, woodsmen tavern, Olympic provisions to experience a real pdx brunch. after all, it is introducing visitors to our foodie culture and it should try to be at least on a par with what the city offers.

From the moment we arrived for my wife 's birthday dinner we were treated as royalty. We were seated at a great window seat, and Pennie's name was printed on the menu. Julie, the Maître 'D, visited our table several times during our meal. Our server, Collin, took time to explain various entrees and specials. His service was genuine, precise and professional. Because of the special occasion, the Chef sent us two small plates with wonderful examples of his culinary skills. Pennie praised her perfectly-prepared Halibut and I was very impressed with my Pork Shanks -- the sauce was thick and complex. Our desserts were beautifully presented and were decadent. All in all, The Heathman Restaurant provided us our most memorable dining experience.

We were disappointed that the food coming from the kitchen was less than good. We went for early seating and ordered the Chef's special which was rib eye, ordered medium rare. The steak was served medium as well as the temperature of the steak was served medium, barely warm, with no flavor. The roasted potatoes were served hard and barely warm. Because we did not have more time to spend there we chose to not have the desert. Unfortunately the experience was not what we had hoped for. They did lower the check to take our comments into account which was appreciated. We were also offered to have the food taken back and warmed up or replaced but because of our time constraints we declined their offer.

We were a group of five with a reservation. We were seated promptly and our waitress was attentive. The drinks, salads and soups arrived in a timely manner but it was a long wait for the main course. We all ordered the halibut entree and all agreed it was probably the best we'd ever eaten. We may have ordered dessert but although we had allowed 1 1/2 hrs for dinner we had to ask for our check early and rush to the show.

I came to the Heathman Restaurant to meet a friend of mine for breakfast. We had started a little later than our original reservation time, but the hostess didn't mind waiting. We hadn't seen each other in years, so we definitely talked each others' ears off. The staff was very accommodating for us, refilling our coffee cups, and making sure that we were still doing well. I have come to the Heathman Restaurant before and have always been impressed with their menu. Yes, it is expensive as far as breakfast food goes, but the taste and presentation of everything makes it 100% worth it.

A special dessert was presented in honor of our special occasion! As we left to go to our Steely Dan concert next door, Katherine, the nice lady who originally welcomed us & guided us to our table, upon seeing Mark taking a pix of me, came outside calling for " oh Anniversary couple", volunteered to take a photo of the 2 of us in front of the lit up markee. This was our second visit to The Heathman. We were pleased with most of our food selections. The onion soup was ordered. The soup itself was tasty, but there was entirely too much stringy cheese atop the soup, and a salad was substituted. Appetizers were over-priced. Drinks were also over-priced. Desserts were reasonably priced. Our watier was very attentive without being overly so. He had a sixth sense on what our next request may be.

An outstanding experience. Best wine list we've seen in PDX and food was absolutely excellent. The tuna tartare offered as a chef's treat at the very beginning was worthy of a main course. We tend toward fish and appreciate when the fish are not overcooked. All the fish we had were cooked to perfection. A review of the Heathman? Couldn't do it justice.

I have been a longtime lover of the The Heathman Restaurant as well as their bar. I had lunch their the other day and it has slipped. I am guessing it is because of the purchase of it by Landry's who is now operating it. With the purchase of McCormick & Schmick's, Landry's took over not only The Heathman but Jake's as well. Jake's Grill has never been the same. Now, sadly, The Heathman is in decline. I was also in the bar over last weekend, a bar which used to be stellar in my view, holding its own in the Portland cocktail scene. Our waitress had never heard of a Negroni. I ordered the Bijou which used to be on their menu and that wasn't known either. As a classic martini I was surprised to have it served in a rocks glass. Very sad.
