A word from The Heathman Restaurant
The Heathman Restaurant is located in the heart of downtown Portland and in the midst of the city’s theatre district.

Executive Chef Michael Stanton uses the very best in seafood, steaks, game, and more: from line caught salmon to organically raised lamb….from heirloom tomatoes to the best berries and fruit available in the Willamette Valley. The Heathman Restaurant takes advantage of local bay shrimp and Oregon razor clams when they are at the peak of season, they use mushrooms unearthed and brought to the kitchen early each morning. The menu aspires to be a constant expression of the vast diversity of ingredients that Oregon has to offer.

The extensive and award winning wine list showcases the best of the Willamette Valley, Southern Oregon, Washington and the rest of the Pacific North West, as well as some of the best wines of Burgundy, Bordeaux, and all the classic New and Old World wine regions.

Located in the hotel of the same name. Attractive dining room although not 5 stars. Menu reasonable in size. Food was good. Service was excellent Packed and a little noisy when we sat down at 7:00 pm on a Saturday night. Much lighter crowd by 8:00. Good solid dining. We sat and talked untill 10:00 and there was no pressure to leave, perhaps because they had empty tables. Would certainly eat there again.

I've been here many times but this time found the food to be not what I would expect for the price. The fisherman stew did not have as much seafood as I would expect for the cost. The lamb dish entree was also small portioned. Neither meal was outstanding or had that "WOW I want to come back again factor." The service is very good, the beverage service good and the drinks were excellent but we won't be looking at the Hearhman again for a special night out or pre theatre dinner.

We always know we will have a wonderful evening if we start with dinner at The Heathman. The Seasonal Menus include a few surprises in ingredients &/or preparation,& they are always cheerfully accommodating of any special requests. We've NEVER had a bad meal here. Only occasionally might a dish be too salty for our tastes, but if you caution when you order, you can easily avoid it. The service is ALWAYS unparalleled, & our server, Ellen, was exceptional, even for The Heathman! She was able to answer every question we asked, made suggestions when we inquired, and even had a fabulous and unusual dessert combo to recommend AFTER we perused the dessert menu:A new, roasty dark beer paired with their amazing flourless chocolate cake! Exquisite!

We brought our 26yr old son who had not been to the Heathman before. He is defintely a foodie out with friends trying new restaurants weekly. We all loved what we ordered. The food was fabulous. Loved our waiter Steve. He had good recommendations what to order and he made us feel important and we felt like family. We will defintely bring our extended family beach to the Heathman.

I selected the Heathman for my partner's and my special dinner because of its historic ambiance and excellent reputation as a fine dining establishment. We are very conscious of what we eat and make a point of avoiding things like gluten and dairy, which they were only too happy to accommodate. The waitress was exceptionally mindful and attentive of our needs and made every effort be on top of things. Zero complaints there. Then it came to ordering the salad. I asked almost in passing what they used in the dressing, mostly assuming that they would use olive oil (as any self-respecting fine dining establishment would). it turns out that they use cheap (trans-fat-containing, GMO) canola oil, and cook with it as well. We won't be back.

We bought out of towners from New York here for breakfast this week..wanted to show them the library and a slice of Old Portland. The meal was very unimpressive...three omelet orders and one of pumpkin pancakes. The pancakes were paper thin and chewy..very unpleasant, actually. The omelets were not tasty and all three people who had them left the potatoes uneaten. The coffee was great as was my cappuccino. Very disappointed with the meal..especially with all the great breakfast places in Portland we could have taken them to. The service was amazing and it is a pretty room.

I had the same mediocre duck years ago. It took over an hour to get our main dish. The reason? "We're busy." They either need to get more kitchen help or serve fewer people. We had to rush because we were going to a venue after.

It's not often I feel a restaurant is stretching to keep up, but it does happen. Halibut dish was only 90% instead of our expectations for 100%, was a little overcooked on top, a little underdone below. Not normal for this restaurant. Other dishes hit the spot, and a nice variety on the desert menu. We do keep going back.

As a vegetarian, I love it when restaurants do special things to cater to vegetarians. I was happy to see that there was a Vegan Tasting menu offered the evening I was there, and ordered it. The meal came with an Amuse Bouche, and 3 courses. The disappointment was the 2nd and 3rd courses - the 2nd course - a risotto was bland. The highlight was the roasted squash served on top. The dessert was way too sweet and I couldn't finish it.

We had excellent service provided by David. He helped us select two fabulous local wines. The carrot risotto entree was vegan and it was, yes, delicious. Lovely iconic restaurant. The nearby bar area was quite loud with a game on the TV which detracted from the overall experience of the dining area.

Another great lunch at The Heathman -- the trout was moist and perfectly cooked. The rabbit terrine was, again, delicious. The only hiccup this time was my entrée arrived when I was only halfway through my appetizer -- otherwise everything was very nice. Look forward to returning.

Positives - food was great and server was very good, when you could find him. Negatives - kept on having to ask for small things i.e. coffee, sugar, milk - busboy (coffee pourer) was not very attentive and would disappear for a long time before we could get his attention for the next missing table item.

On first look this place is a total find. The menu doesn't blow you away with selections but on closer inspection the details are there. The food, including prep and presentation, are a cut above. The wine list is truly impressive, knockout quality with many (hopefully well-) aged wines, until your gaze shifts to the right and you behold the prices. Then I was truly knocked out, and not in the good way. As we live in the Green Valley appelation of the Russian River Valley I'm kind of a pinot snob. But these prices are way out of line especially for the quality at least for the PN. Found a decent unfiltered & unfined OR specimen & enjoyed the dinner, feeling only moderately offended when it came time to settle up.

My husband selected the Heathman Restaurant for his birthday/retirement celebration dinner. We had a nice table next to the window. The server was attentive and helpful in recommending wine and dishes. My husband had rabbit ragu with pappardelle, and I had the braised pork shank. We were both very pleased with our entrees, and with the green salad that we shared. Our wines were excellent, although the price per glass is high. For dessert, we shared the pots de creme, a perfect ending for our meal. We find the Heathman to be a good place for special dinners, when you don't mind spending extra for the food that is carefully prepared and locally sourced.

Food: Sauce for Rabbit ragu parpardelle is INCREDIBLE! Wine: Was pleasantly surprised to find Cana's Feast's Counoise on menu - love that wine. Service: Arrive for pre-show dinner with reservations at five, show at 7:30, but friend called that they would be 1.5 hrs late. Switched to bar for early dinner and wait for friend. Happy hour was in full swing with various groups merging tables, nut not noisy. Service was Exemplary, especially when I explained situation. When my friend arrived even later than expected - waiter helped direct her to nearby garage from my phone, them staff has her food out quickly plus her glass of wine waiting. Made it to show on time thanks to their help.

We have never had a less-than-wonderful meal at the Heathman. My husband and I usually get different meals, and we are always both delighted. Thursday was another example--he with a delicious pork dish and me with wonderful halibut. Often one of the side dishes will be unconventional. This time it was some sunchokes in my halibut dish and they were amazingly good. I have a list of food sensitivities, and again the Heathman has never let me down. They take them very seriously and the chefs are very flexible and willing to do some customization.

I have to admit I was disappointed. Didn't realize that only brunch was served until 2pm on Sunday. The cocktail was not good but they did provide both us that had ordered it a new and different drink. 3 of the 4of us only found our meals adequate not super as we had thought. Ambiance was very nice. It is a great looking and functioning restaurant but we just weren't into the "brunch". My fault I should have checked that out prior.

The hostess was friendly both upon greeting us and as we parted for the evening. The hostess even when I asked for directions to the restroom, walked me part way to assure me in my way! Also the waiter assistant was very attentive to keeping water glasses full, clearing used plates and yet in a non-intrusive manner. It's nice to have that balance of just right amount of service. The salmon was wonderful and the best clam chowder we ever ate-- even better than what one may get at the coast!

Overall the cuisine is really good for Portland and this is usually a special place. The last visit was totally the opposite. When our soup arrived an extremely loud fire alarm meant to cause you to evacuate the building started to go off. I jumped up ready to leave but was informed after a few moments that it was only a test. It subsided after going off periodically for about five minutes. My entree arrived and the alarm started going off again. Having a headache from the previous episode, I left the restaurant.

starting with a tasteless Bloody Mary, accessorized by a lone string bean, followed by a spongy omelette filled with flavorless spinach and mushroom, requiring salt but the salt shaker on the table was empty, coffee refills which needed to be asked for, as well as the cream, and jarred jams in a city famous for its farmers market just blocks from its restaurant. management should visit tasty 'n sons, woodsmen tavern, Olympic provisions to experience a real pdx brunch. after all, it is introducing visitors to our foodie culture and it should try to be at least on a par with what the city offers.

From the moment we arrived for my wife 's birthday dinner we were treated as royalty. We were seated at a great window seat, and Pennie's name was printed on the menu. Julie, the Maître 'D, visited our table several times during our meal. Our server, Collin, took time to explain various entrees and specials. His service was genuine, precise and professional. Because of the special occasion, the Chef sent us two small plates with wonderful examples of his culinary skills. Pennie praised her perfectly-prepared Halibut and I was very impressed with my Pork Shanks -- the sauce was thick and complex. Our desserts were beautifully presented and were decadent. All in all, The Heathman Restaurant provided us our most memorable dining experience.

We were disappointed that the food coming from the kitchen was less than good. We went for early seating and ordered the Chef's special which was rib eye, ordered medium rare. The steak was served medium as well as the temperature of the steak was served medium, barely warm, with no flavor. The roasted potatoes were served hard and barely warm. Because we did not have more time to spend there we chose to not have the desert. Unfortunately the experience was not what we had hoped for. They did lower the check to take our comments into account which was appreciated. We were also offered to have the food taken back and warmed up or replaced but because of our time constraints we declined their offer.
