We have been before and like this
place. However on this visit, it seems that the place needs to up their game. Our waitress seemed distracted - even though it wasn't very crowded. We usually go with either the burger or the fish dinner. One friend opted for the burger and requested it medium. It arrived very rare. Another friend went with the fish dinner which at one time came with a nice pile of fries. It arrived with fish on a small palette of fries. I decided to try the lamb vindaloo. It wasn't bad - but nothing to recommend it. We would really like to see this place succeed but in a town with so many restaurant options, it is tough to recommend this based on our last visit."

I love the burger here, and
routinely send friends to The Haven to try it. It's all kinds of wonderful. The chips/fries are thick cut and the ketchup is made in house. Sometimes I'll have one of their ridiculously awesome mashed potato sides rather than fries. There is no wrong move here. I constantly try to find reasons to show up late, as the late night menu also has a fish sandwich on it, with the same amazing fried fish from the dinner menu's fish and chips, as well as the absolutely amazing Finnan Haddie croquettes. Any dish made with their house sausages is great, too. The servers are friendly and knowledgeable, the bartenders are fast and witty, the beer selection is impressive. Go to The Haven."

The hamburgers are huge and
delicious as are the fries. The vindaloo was quite spicy, but tasty. There is a great beer list with lots of British and Scottish beers. We had an attentive waitress and all in all a lovely evening."
Dined on 2/25/2014
We enjoyed the casual, friendly
atmosphere. Our server was upbeat, attentive and helpful with menu choices. We went on a Saturday evening, and as such, the restaurant was busy. I had the grilled salmon, my partner ordered the steak pie. We ate it all, not a morsel left on the plates. Definately want to return and try the weekend brunch."
Dined on 2/22/2014
A really fun spot with great
ambience and authentic Scottish food. Crowds rolled in and service gets a bit compromised but have another beer and you won't mind. You'll love the waiter wearing his traditional Scottish kilt."
Dined on 2/22/2014
Had dinner with three friends with
an 8pm reservation. We arrived at 8:05pm to a table waiting for us. There place was full, which gave the room a nice feel. Our meal and drinks were timed such that everything went very smooth. All four of us were happy with our meals and with the excellent service. Our waitress Morgan helped to make our outing a good evening, all the way around."
Dined on 2/20/2014
Stopped in after being by Angell,
just wanted a neato lunch place. We liked the fact that it is unique Scottish food, but we spent $86 on lunch and that shocked us. The drinks are WAY overpriced."
Dined on 1/17/2014
I have visited The Haven several
times, and I recommend it wholeheartedly. Even customers who have restricted diets like my wife and me -- we're mostly vegetarian but eat fish on occasion -- should be able to find something outstanding."
Dined on 2/15/2014
Nearly everything about the Haven
is excellent--friendly staff, delicious beverages, happy vibe. Though I was grateful for the choice of many vegan sides, our vegetable plate (kale, peas, zucchini), completely lacked flavor. I guess that's part of the Scottish thing? I'll probably be back for the drinks."
Dined on 2/8/2014
i had been to the haven for dinner
about 1 yr ago with 2 friends. i had scotch egg (fab), 1 friend had the best homemade sausage i have ever had and potatoes w/green onions (?). fab. etc. we went to sat. brunch on 2/8. we both had the haven sandwich. sausage was horrible, potato cake was not so great. egg was good. waitress didnt really know menu that well, music was not scottish (in the background). i told the waitress i didnt like the food and she didnt even offer to get me something else.."

The Haven is nicely set up for
groups. As a couple, however, we were placed at a high shelf with stools overlooking the street. The restaurant was busy and the service was friendly, but inattentive. Food was very good, but not close to the "mind blowing" that some other reviews have implied. I give 4 stars for food based on the entrees. The pear-ginger cobbler was such a train wreck we almost sent it back. It was incredibly dry. I detected no ginger and the dish was in dire need of added sugar. (This coming from someone who thinks most desserts are over-sweetened.) Overall the Haven was well worth a visit, and I will probably return at some point to try some of their other dishes. I'm just not as enthusiastic as I was hoping to be."
Dined on 2/8/2014
The food was essentially Scottish
comfort food which was welcome on the cold night we visited. My meal was simple but delicious as was what I tried of my girlfriends. The beer selection was pricey but high quality and unique. Be sure to try the Scottish Deviled Egg!"
Dined on 2/7/2014
A wonderful Scottish pub. Had
smoke fish cakes with pepper sauce for brunch. Service was excellent and prices were reasonable."
Dined on 1/26/2014
Scotch deviled egg was delicious,
cocktails were good, entrees were not incredible and dessert was fantastic although visually not the most appealing. I was hoping for more flavorful, more robust, and it struck me as unnecessarily bland. Place was packed, quite noisy, but not sure I would return or recommend."
Dined on 1/17/2014
Cozy, appealing atmosphere with
good food and wonderful service=attentive but not hovering. A bit noisy and tables close together but acceptable for the size of the room.. Would definitely go there again!"
Dined on 1/16/2014
I really like the ambiance and the
originality of this restaurant. I would like to make this my new brunch spot, but the service needs to be improved. The servers were friendly and courteous, but I had to ask multiple times for water and coffee refills. We waited more than 20 minutes to order and then waited about 45 minutes for food. The food was definitely freshly made!"
Dined on 1/12/2014
Great fun and wonderful food. The
salmon was the best around and all the casseroles were flavorful. The tables are close together in a small space which adds to the friendly atmosphere but it can be difficult to hear. A very welcoming pub, of course, it does help if you are wearing a kilt! We can't wait to go back!"
Dined on 1/11/2014
What a wonderful place. My mother
was Scottish and it brought back warm memories. The number of items on the menu were perfect and the salmon was devine."
Dined on 1/3/2014
Cozy. Great beer & scotch
selection. Delicious food. Recommend the scotch egg and all the veg dishes."
Dined on 11/14/2013
Four adults, two generations,
totally happy with a super meal. Cocktails reasonably priced and deeeee-lish. Carrot something sale was super.. had another appetizer (birdies??) that were also de-lush. Vegetairan entree good. Someone had salmon and loved it. I can't remember the other entrees but they were also enthusiastically received. Owner is really welcoming, service was good. Also had desert (the ice cream with flake 99 (yum!) and toffee something that was sweet and yum. I'm not fully capturing how pleasant and satisfying the whole experience was but it was great. Really lovely evening and good dinner."

Last minute, looking for a place
with good ambience and equally good food. Found it at the Haven! Jason has done a wonderful job there. And so friendly too! Enjoy"
Dined on 12/7/2013
Creative menu--out of the ordinary
Scottish cuisine, great beer selection. Excellent service. Defnitely make a reservation--it is a small place and they had to turn away a crowd of would be diners. Live enertainment/piper Going back again this weekend."
Dined on 11/30/2013
This is my second time having
brunch at The Haven and it was even better than the first! Get the breakfast sandwich. You won't be disappointed."
Dined on 12/1/2013
This was our 2nd or 3rd time at
the Haven. The menu is unusual for Boston; can't think of another Scottish restaurant. Fresh ingredients, unusual flavor combinations. I especially loved the minty, mushy peas that came with my light crisp fish and chips. Great beer and Scotch list as you might imagine. Funky hunting lodge decor is fun. The vibe is lively!"
Dined on 10/27/2013
This was our first time in and I
had heard good things so maybe we need to give it another shot. We were seated right away and a cozy table in a very cute dining room. We got our drinks right away and the variety was very good with a lot of Scottish beer to choose from. The Maggie May gin based drink was awesome. Our app arrived about 5 minutes after we started eating our entrees so that was unfortunate. I got the stuffed peppers with rice and veggies. It was overpowering with curry which was not a spice mentioned on the menu. My husband got the cockles and blood sausage stew. The cockles were cooked well but the sausage was very dry. Our server never checked to see how our meals were. If I got back it will be for drinks at the bar only."

Loved that a guy wore a
kilt.....how can you go wrong??!"

The place was bustling and I was
glad we had made an OpenTable reservation. We were seated in a great spot. Our server, Diana, was superb. We asked for her input on some choices and we were not steered wrong. The food was amazing. My daughter had the scottish deviled eggs for an app. I had the vegetarian special. My daughter's meal was delicious. We were delighted by gluten free options. We eat out alot but were struck by how well taken care of we felt, remarkably so. Our meal was capped by a fried Mars bar, scrump-tious! I can see why the line was so long to get in and why people linger over their meals at this haven. An added treat was the bagpipe/guitarist. We will be back, probably for Sunday brunch, as we hear it is quite good."
Dined on 11/22/2013
The online reviews about this
place were not lying, the burger has a delish flavor and condiments. Scottish food, who knew?"
Dined on 11/10/2013
One of my friends in the group has
food allergies. Our waitress, Alison, was phenomenal; she exceeded our expectations ensuring everyone in my group would have a safe, pleasant, delicious dining experience. We all had an awesome time."
Dined on 11/9/2013
Our table was ready as soon as we
got there and they were flexible about letting us choose which of the open ones we wanted. Food was all excellent, including the scotch egg, haggis, amd fish & chips (might've been the best I've had). Cozy vibe, rare Scottish beer selection, and good orices all make this place a winner."
Dined on 11/9/2013
My cousins were up to visit and I
felt the best place to go to dinner was The Haven! Our grandmother was from Scotland and the 3 of us love to visit. We feel like we are transported across the pond when intact it's only a couple miles away. I love the decor and the homey feel. The food is great and we love the selection of Scottish beer. A great experience!"
Dined on 10/27/2013
Everything's fresh and delicious
here from the oatcakes, sweet butter, and pickled fennel beginng to the sticky toffee pudding ending. In between, try any rabbit dish on the menu if its there. Otherwise, finnan haddie, cullen skink, pear and ayr cheese salad, smoked fish, fish and chips, roasted chicken are all great bets."
Dined on 10/12/2013
A consistent ly good food
experience in JP. Scottish Fare with a great taste and preparation. For the Beer lover this is a perfect place. The wine list is very limited."
Dined on 10/5/2013
The beer-pairing was A M A Z I N
G! Kelpie was my favorite, and the service was appropriately engaging! We really enjoyed ourselves. The vindaloo was tasty. We loved everything. Thank you so much for a great experience, we'll be back with friends!"
Dined on 9/23/2013
This is one of my favorite
restaurants in JP. The food is amazing! We love to go for brunch--I especially recommend the quiche. It is always filled with different seasonal vegetables and always delicious. Dinner is great there too. You really can't go wrong with The Haven. It has a friendly, inviting environment great for groups with outstanding food. I highly recommend it."
Dined on 9/29/2013
The menu is a bit small and is
definitely pretty meaty (I am a vegetarian) but the service is always gracious and pleasant, and they make nice drinks. Live music some nights is icing on the cake. I wish the chairs were more comfy (they are NOT) and that they'd serve just one vegan thing at brunch other than the fruit. But in all, I like the Haven, it is a charming spot, it is always clean, and their truffled rutabaga at dinner is a surprisingly yummy dish."
Dined on 7/17/2013
We had a great time; even my
stuffy suburban parents who can be quite annoyed when they don't like a place. Enjoyed our food; Hubs is a veggie and appreciate options beyond the ubiquitous veggie burger. The staff was great about seating my group at a large-enough table with space for a hand-sy kid. It's quiet with few people in the restaurant, then gets quite loud, so a JP kiddo who's used to going out will do fine and not annoy others.(No changing table.) Lotsa great beer options; small wine list. Rustic feeling, but clean and fresh. Street parking not an issue even during Open Studios. A new standard choice for us. James Gate wins for similar rustic space/ kiddo-love, this place kills it with better food, adult and not townie scene."
Dined on 9/22/2013
I have wanted to try this place
for a while and I'm glad I did. I had the stuffed peppers and a stout. Everything was great. The food was excellent. Our server was very nice and friendly. It was a Monday night, so we lucked out getting high seats by the window. Very entertaining, many dogs walking about the neighborhood as it is right across from the MSPCA. There are many more items on the menu I want to try so I will be visiting again soon for sure. Thank you for an excellent dinner."
Dined on 9/17/2013
Brought friends to this great spot
we'd visited before. Everyone enjoyed the great imported beverages. Cullen Skink chowder was a hit with our friends - commented on the lovely smoked scent. Fish and Chips had batter with perfect crunch - fries were stolen from my plate for those having the stuffed peppers and vindaloo - although they ate their meals too fast for us to snag a taste back."
Dined on 9/15/2013
Great Scottish food! Waiter was
great. Beer was delicious. Haven't had a Belhaven since I was in Scotland. Looking forward to going back."
