The HavenCan't wait to go backWe brought our mom to the Haven for Mother's Day. We were all extremely impressed! We started with the seafood platter which had a variety of smoked fish and the Scottish deviled eggs. I had scallops, my mom got the fish supper, my brother the burger. Everything was perfectly done and the flavors were fabulous. The fried fish batter had a nutmeg tinge to it - unexpected but yummy! My brother says its the best burger he's ever had. Atmosphere is funky yet homey and the service was great - you feel like you can relax. Our server was also helpful explaining the beer list and letting my mom sample something before making a choice. Not a crumb remained on any plate. Everything was beyond our expectations ~ fresh and delicious. The cullent skink was made to order and outstanding. I had lamb vindaloo and whilst excellent to most American palates, I would have preferred it a whole lot hotter (as in spicier). Husband enjoyed the haggis which was individually prepared and cooked. I liked it but, once again, thought it might be tempered a little to American tastes ~ not as spicy and peppery as we have at home. That being said, it was delicious and we scoffed the lot. We were not disappointed. The atmosphere was awesome...very energetic and lively. The staff were authentic Scottish and super helpful with beer recommendations. The food was really good across the board (there were 4 in our party and we all ordered different things so I had the opportunity to try several items on the menu). And to top it all off, there was an amazing bagpiper who played a couple of songs each hour. Nevertheless, the staff was good about keeping us informed and we were seated only about ten minutes late.
Service was attentive and efficient. Staff was concerned that everything was o.k. In fact, I didn't like the beer I ordered and the waitress was very gracious about my returning it and ordering another.
My only quibble is that my chicken was unexceptional--a generous portion, but bland. Not something I'd order again. I will, though, return. They treat you like they are happy to have you there. The food is great and fun. The vibe is great. The service is great. The staff immediately moved us back to a "waiting" table where we were able to chat and snack until a new (and perfect!) table was ready. They were understanding and happy to help us, the food was fantastic, everyone was lovely. We've been here twice. It's Scottish, which is unusual, and it is has the feel of a small European neighborhood restaurant. The workers are friendly and the service is very good. The server was attentive, and took our drink orders. There is a large selection on the drinks menu, and it was easy to find something that would complement the meal. We ordered the fish and chips, and were again served without too long of a wait. The large piece of fish was fried to perfection, and the chips were great with the homemade ketchup. (Of note, the chips held vinegar well, and reminded me of chips I had eaten in the UK.) The portions were the perfect size, and we had room for dessert.
