Diner Reviews
  • "As regular patrons to Nieto's, Cafe Central, and Happ Inn I was offended to be marked an Open Table "No Show". There was only one other table occupied in the Dinning Room and certainly the oversight due to being busy. Watch your account closely."

  • "The food was fair, the waiter was not friendly (never saw a smile during the entire dinner), restaurant very unacommondating. One person at our table has diabetes and asked simply for plain veggies rather that with oil, she also asked for a baked potato, neither were available. She ended up having a plain grilled chicken breast on her plate. We will never return."

  • "We are regulars and eat here at least twice a month. The food is consistently good and it is a neighborhood gem. This time we had a fabulous server, Scott. He was attentive, professional, and personable. In the future we will request sitting at one of his tables. We love the Sangria special on Fridays along with the crab cakes. The salmon dinner is always a winner."

  • "Good food, service and location.we asked to be seated away from bar when we made reservations including our grand kids. We got there and we're taken to a table off the bar. Easily remedied by requesting table in main dining room."

  • "Happ Inn never disappoints. The food and service are very good. The prices are reasonable. I especially love the Hummus as an appetizer and the fried chicken for dinner. Their burgers are also excellent."

  • "First time I ordered fish tacos. The fish was really fresh, a little light on the seasoning, but the taco shells were soft and not very tasty. Only ate part of one shell. Love this place as a great neighborhood place. Easy to get to off the highway."

  • "Yes, the Black & Blue Burger, especially if ordered medium rare, with Danish Bleu Cheese and Onions - but requested without lettuce, tomato, and the Bleu Cheese dressing - is in this diner's perspectival opinion THE best hamburger in all of Chicagoland and deserves to be memorialized as such on the cover of Chicago Magazine. But the restaurant is more than this superb sandwich - it's indeed a "great neighborhood gem," owned and operated by Debbie and Carlos Nieto, with an expansive menu of comforting, familiar foods and specials, expertly prepared and served in a HAPPy environment. Excellent wines by glass. Our server this visit was Osvaldo who treated us warmly but with respect, was available when needed, and promptly saw to all requests."

  • "A popular north shore spot, but not my favorite place to dine. On the most recent occasion, the room was rather noisy. Our table was pushed into a corner, my chair backed uncomfortably into a large vase. The waiter was friendly and professional, but appeared rushed and rather intense. Not a relaxing scenario. I haven't found a menu item that I like there; but in all fairness, I don't eat burgers which are a specialty. I've tried the chicken sandwich which was just ok, the whitefish which was breaded and fried (yuk), and the beet salad which was bland yet bitter. The guacamole appetizer was beautifully presented but not that great tasting. I'll probably keep trying, because it's in the neighborhood, but Happ Inn does not make me Happ-y."

  • "Great for lunch, drinks (Green Hornet is my favorite), appetizers, dinner. Food is delicious and service is always good - except for the hostesses, who are a little chilly. Wait staff is great. I've been there often with girlfriends and with family - and I have to thank them for their extensive GF menu, which is the best around!"

  • "Food was good. Service poor. Our soup was served at the same time our entres were served. Unacceptable. Manager was hovering over our table and brought the check himself. We were rushed out in less than one hour. Unacceptable."

  • "My wife, my mother-in-law, and I all ate at the Happ Inn last evening … and as usual, the food and service were very good. We enjoy going there. We ate in a new room (for us), with a giant television screen. "

  • "I eat at The Happ Inn quite often, usually with friends and/or my beloved and do so because I enjoy every aspect of the restaurant. The menu has great offerings without being overwhelming with choices. The quality of the food is wonderful and consistent. The service is always attentive."

  • "Wonderful entree choices, fresh whitefish piccata, chicken, burgers. Extensive buffet, with some Mexican American dishes. Tasty potato mushroom taquitos. Smoked salmon and fish. Dessert buffet includes fresh fruit. A joyful noisy family place for Mother's Day. Solid cooking. This is comfort food. "

  • "Went to the Happ Inn for Mother's Day and we thought that it would feel rushed and that service would be okay based on the occasion; however, we came out very impressed with HAPPy comments and HAPPy tummies. The service was great and the food quality was worth the price for the Mother's Day Brunch they had. It was a great experience and we'll definitely stop in again. Zack, our server, was very attentive and so was all the supporting staff. Truly made Mother's Day brunch one to remember. Thanks!"

  • "This was my first trip to the Happ Inn. I expected burgers and salads (which they have) but what stood out was the fine upscale Mexican food. To start the guacamole is freshly prepared and outstanding. The chicken quesadilla was also a step above those found at similar restaurants. My son very much enjoyed his cheeseburger, but the star of the table were my tilapia tacos, and my daughters chicken tacos. The service was fine. Our waiter seemed rushed and bothered by any additional requests. Given the quality of the food I am inclined to return."

  • "We ate here for Mother's Day and they did a very nice Brunch with a Mexican influence. The pastry display was great with a lot of different choices. All the food was solid, well made and very tasty. We ate in the garden room and enjoyed the sun coming in. A very good standby especially if you don't want to drive into the City. Very kid friendly in an upscale way."

  • "patio floor wqs being redone so unavailable that day; dining room so noisey no possibility to have donversation; sat in bar area, plwasant enough certain areas of patio when availavle have air conditioning units blowing right on top of you The hostess was terrible, not like that when Carlos is there, very off day"

  • "A bus person filled our glasses with water. After that we had to ask for more. I brought a glass of wine from the bar and when no wanted another, I had to catch the waitress's eye to request one. Servers should be better on top of things than they are!"

  • "Happ Inn is a go-to resource when dining in the northern suburbs. It's adjacent to the Willow Road exit from the Edens and the experience is consistently solid. I usually opt for something basic, with fries, so I haven't tested the restaurant's skill level much, but there is something to be said for getting the hamburger you asked for in the way you asked for it. I gave this place a "very good" ranking because it's so consistent in delivering the experience I want. They might have some unique dishes that are beyond great, but I haven't visited that part of the menu, so I can't comment on that."

  • "Dined at Happ Inn. It started out great. But as they got busier, it was all down hill. The waiter failed to bring our soup and one of our entrees. He said it would be a few minutes...25 minutes later, he finally brought the missing entree...with little apology. When we said we no longer wanted it because everyone was done eating, he seemed suprised. When the check was brought, he graciously told us we weren't charged for the soup or skirt steak. They took it off the bill. Why were we charged in the first place? We never received them. We asked nicely to speak to the manager, who in the middle of our conversation started talking to people he knew, turned his back on us and then walked away not once, but twice! It was truly offensive."

  • "None of your standard descriptions above cover why we go to Happ Inn. They are very accommodating to large adult groups. The food is priced appropriate for a a casual family supper. We are not bar people so we do not use the bar. We go to Happ Inn about 12 times a year."
