  • "I know I prefer the octopus appetizer to the grilled entree because I like the wider tender portions of the octopus. However, I think the appetizer had too much mayo in it. The striped bass special was excellent, but I didn't like the vermicelli shrimp dish with a mayo sauce drenched on top of a large avocado wedge and the sauce tasted like a sweet BBQ sauce. I thought I had this dish the prior time, but it was completely different this time. The service was and always is excellent."

  • "My husband and I have dined at Hake, as a couple and in a group, at least 10 times since we were introduced To their amazing cuisine this past Summer. We are devoted Hake fans and are consistently impressed with their personalized service, Creative menu and Top Chef presentations."

  • "Love the style and freshness of the food. Everything we tasted was great. The cocktails were refreshing and yummy. Had a blast with our waiter (Kevin) and the GM (Daniel)."

  • "We live in La Jolla, and have been to almost every seafood restaurant in the area. This one is among my favorites. I especially enjoy the collar bone fish and the swordfish. The crispy broccoli is so good that you can't eat just one Although it's on the pricey side, the value is worth it. ."

  • "The food was great, the service was also very good, it is a fun and not so fancy restaurant !"

  • "The Happy Hour menu has a lot of small dishes that were excellent, and we supplemented that with the lemon risotto and the 5 herb salad - both also outstanding. It was a lovely dinner with excellent service and no rush to get us to leave."

  • "Some of the tastiest seafood in town. Service is top notch provided by a happy and energetic staff. A problem with one dish was quickly resolved with several staff apologizing profusely. And... you will never eat better shrimp tacos!"

  • "We had big expectations, but...... The food OK. I did not like The octopus at all."

  • "Our only night out in La Jolla and we wanted it to be special. Reservations were for 7:30, well after the rush and our table wasn't ready so we had a drink at the bar. Manager came over within 15 minutes and told us our table was ready. We waited another 15 minutes before being waited on at the table. We ordered an appetizer which was initially wrong and then delivered well after others who were seated after us. I had to stop the waitress, Samantha twice as she zoomed by our table, to ask for things. The food was excellent. Everything we ordered was made to perfection and delicious."

  • "I took my 16-year old here for dinner when we were in town visiting colleges. She is fairly adventurous and we like to share plates, which makes her a cheap date when just the two if us go out. We had two starters (a root vegetable salad and a short angel hair with spicy tomato paste/shrimp) and the ahi tuna burger. Everything was delicious and neither of us could have eaten another bite. There was a huge party next to us, but still it wasn't too terribly loud - just good energy. The staff was super. Would definitely come back. Would be the perfect place for a night out with friends."

  • "Great experience. The food was terrific, and the service was perfect. What a fun place to go. Next time, we'll go with a group. This restaurant understands that people want great (local) food and drink in a relaxed atmosphere at a good price point. They deliver. Nice job."

  • "Went for lunch on my birthday. Restaurant is downstairs off the street, near George's. They have been open a year in June. Had the Tuna Burger with Arugula salad. Fish very fresh. Salad has cucumber sliced and avocado hidden inside. Tasty! For desert had the Key Lime Semifredda . Best I have had. Service was attentive and helpful. My first choice in San Diego"

  • "Loved the classic decor, sort of like a brasserie. Restaurant is below street level but didn't feel dark or cramped. Very creative seafood menu with lots of crudo choices. Octopus appetizer was amazing! Only dish that missed were the oysters which were served at the end of the meal (?). Terrific drinks."

  • "4 stars for the Hake! Though not a flawless 5, it was still absolutely wonderful. Our hostess and server was knowledgable and attentive. She started us off with drinks and recommended some appetizers. (Note: for you gluten free diners, the menu is already marked with great choices for you.) We ordered the roasted octopus and to our delight and surprise, it was tender and delicious. Our dinners and desserts were excellent, with our entire party smiling and raving. So why not a 5 star rating? Two things: The lentils in my main course were very, very salty. This clashed terribly with the delicious fish and sweet potatoes. And the acoustics make conversation quite difficult. Still, we will absolutely return. We look forward to it!"

  • "We ate small plates and while half were tasty, the others were undistinguished. More potatoes than octopus, but credit the sauce which was lovely. Might return to try it again. Might."

  • "We were only in La Jolla for one evening and we are so happy that The Hake was our pick for dinner. The service and food were outstanding! I am now on a quest to replicate the Indian Summer Martini - so delicious!"

  • "Dined here on a Sunday night with another couple. The menu was very interesting and creative - something for everyone. The five herb salad, ceviche, and grilled octopus were all very good. Service was excellent though they were not very busy. I imagine it would be quite noisy if they were busy due to the nature of the space and all the hard surfaces. The atmosphere is very casual - more like a cafe."

  • "Food was overpriced. Dessert was not good. Sent one dessert back and got a replacement, which was also sub par. Just so so."

  • "I love this place! Exciting food, for both seafood and meat lovers. Great ambiance - very international. I especially like the Roasted Octopus and the Hamachi Tiraditos. Those who are brave must ask for the habanero salsa - it is more of a pickled mix of mandolin sliced habanero, serrano, and purple onions. Lasting heat! Finally for dessert, I love Key Lime Pie, but I have never had a pie that has left me satiated...until now. Exceptional. You can order from the appetizers and Tiraditos to do a tapas style meal, or kick it in to high gear and go for the porterhouse (also an excellent choice.) Good for a date, great for a group of girl friends, family meal, or business meal. It won't disappoint. Saludos!"

  • "We went here with a group of 4, brought wine, and ordered loads of small plates. Kept it right around $200 for 4 (including the corkage) which for the quality was super reasonable and we left stuffed and having eaten a solid lineup of food. The drinks did look amazing, regretting not ordering one of those, but gives a reason to go back!"

  • "First time to visit the Hake. Great ambience, alive and fun but not too loud. Eclectic and very creative menu with many seafood sel3ctions. Sea bass was seasoned perfectly. The roasted broccoli with bacon is an outstanding crispy side dish. Service was knowledgeable and gracious, attentive but never intrusive. No views but the interior is creatively designed and decorated. Outdoor patio is in a lovely garden setting with a half dozen 2 - person bistro tables and overhead heating. Will definitely return."

  • "The decent food was overcome by poor staff training. When we entered the empty restaurant my wife asked if we could move tables away from the open front door. The hostesses said she could not accommodate our request despite the numerous empty tables of the same size. The waiter was kind and prompt enough, yet he did even know know wait staff 101: serve from the left - clear from the right. This was our third time to Hake, but sadly our last."

  • "We tried out this spot for restaurant week and it was delicious!! We want to go back for sure to check out the other items on the menu. I had the octopus to start and my husband had the rib eye lettuce wraps. We both got the mahi for an entree and it was cooked perfectly and was delicious. They also served some complimentary bread that was delicious as well. Basically...everything we had was delicious!! To add to that, our server was very knowledgeable and nice. The only downside we could say was that we thought there would be an ocean view because of the location but there isn't. But we would much rather have great food and then walk down to the ocean for vieweing rather than being served mediocre food with a beautiful view."

  • "This restaurant is really pleasing to the eye with the raw materials they use for decor. They could definitely turn the much up quite a bit to create a more fun atmosphere. It was really quiet and too much kitchen/staff noise at times. The experience was good overall and the food was delicious. Crank up the tunes!!!"

  • "My boyfriend and I went here for restaurant week, the food was good, waiters were friendly and it was overall a nice place. The thing that made it different from other restaurants is that every dish had a fun twist to it, combining items I wouldn't think of but work wonderfully. The only down side is parking, and that they use paper place mats, not something I want to see at a place that can easily get to $50+ a person."

  • "The Hake is going to make it in one of La Jalla's toughest locations...underneath Georges. Great ambiance, energy and service make this a neighborhood gem in a tourist town. New York type feel being underground with eclectic decor. Had 2 tiraditos which I was anxious to try....fantastic...the octopus and the hamachi...would highly recommend had Mahi Mahi and a very flavorful fresh side salad. Paired it with some nice wine..followed by a cheesecake type desert and cappuccino. Wow! This place hit on all cylinders. Finally a place to revisit time and again in this basement location"
