A really lovely and charming restaurant, slightly downstairs from the street in the hip district of La Jolla Village. Outside and indoor dining. We had roasted octopus, which was among the most flavorful and succulent ever, and a hamburger, cooked just right and outrageously delicious. Our waiter, Max, was so cool, friendly and attentive -- a genuine professional. Terrific place.

We booked a reservation here for brunch when our first choice was unavailable. The menu is full of delicious sounding food, but we had a serrano ham and grilled octopus appetizer, and a kale salad and shrimp roll for mains. Our son (who is 3) shared all of the food. Everything was delicious and well-prepared. The shrimp roll was cravable and would probably have me coming back the next time I'm in San Diego.

This was our first time at Hake. Chose it for restaurant week. Its more of a bistro look. Very open, black and white marble, etc. Servers are attentive and there are enough for the crowd. We both went with the special fixed price three course dinner ($35). Outstanding burrata salad. Very good steak lettuce wraps. Good size but not overwhelming. I had the octopus. Again, good portions but not too huge. Very well cooked in a very Mediterranean style. Would have been at home in Greece. My wife raved about the mushroom risotto. Deserts were equally good. Lot of care for the food. Only minor gripe, and I feel like I am seeing this everywhere now, is the wine pricing. Maybe just my age.

We visited during San Diego's Restaurant Week and had the special menu. The Ceviche and Bass was outstanding, the veggie options of Kale Salad and Risotto less so. Paired wines were also outstanding. Service very professional and friendly. I mentioned to the owner that I had been torn between choosing the specials and the roasted octopus. Within a few minutes, he brought a bowl to the table as a gift. A great gesture and it was delicious. A pity that the veggie options weren't up to the standard of the rest but we will certainly return when in La Jolla.

We had dinner the other during restaurant week. For $35 each, we each got an appetizer, entree, and dessert. For an additional $20, I got a wine pairing with each. A pretty great deal! The food was outstanding. The lettuce wraps were incredible. The ceviche was phenomenal. I wish I could have that goat cheese cheesecake every day for the rest of my life. Needless to say, we were very pleased with our meal.

I chose this restaurant by reviewing Yelp comments. However, the food was not special and the waiter we had was competent, at best. I can't remember the last time we were not presented with the dessert menu before we were asked if there was anything else...? I will not be returning and I will not be recommending it to anyone else.

Taste was key. I mean their food was really good. I just think that the prices per portion should've been better. We both had appetizers and dinner. After all that, i mean it was really good, but we wanted more. It's not the place to go hungry. That's the best way to put it, despite the really great taste. Dining atmosphere was really good. Service was good - even the manager came over and asked how everything was. So it shows they care about their restaurant. We both kind'a made the hint that the portions were like super-small, man. It was laughable, literally. We laughed when we saw the plates. Like...that's it? Definitely worth trying. Fried avacado for the first time, wasn't bad...

Even though the food and service is outstanding the noise level is unbearable. The noise level is the only thing that can ruin a perfect dinner. During my dinner it reached around 95 dB, as a comparison a jet engine in is around 100 dB. Basically it feels like dinning next to a jet engine for around 2 hours.

A mixed party of five, we had a variety of seafood and meat entrées, preceded by salads and topped off with desserts. All were outstanding. The table service was excellent; well-timed and courteous. Prices were reasonable given the overall quality of the food and service. The sole mis-step was a host who addressed me rudely when we sought to change our reserved table.

My wife and I went to The Hake in mid-August to celebrate our anniversary. The service was good, but our server was very inexperienced and/or very busy. However, the host stepped in and provided excellent service over and above the waiter. In particular his recommendation of the whole snapper was excellent. We also had a smattering of appetizers and cocktails/wine - all were great. Would definitely return. Only downside is there's no view - but you can get that walking around before/afterwards.

Of the several places we ate in La Jolla, this was my overall favorite, beating out many of the higher priced, more well-known options. It is relaxed, with a very inventive menu, and preparations which merged Japanese and Mexican cuisines in a fun, surprising, and really tasty manner! The service is impeccable and very, very welcoming. I would return in a heartbeat!

We ate at The Hake our last night in La Jolla and while it was good it wasn't what we expected. The wait staff were very nice but they seemed to be constantly running between the tables and we were not able to relax in that atmosphere. I ordered the Bone-in Rosemary Crusted Pork Chop. First there was no bone in my pork chop. It was pounded thin and so breaded it looked like a chicken fried steak. I didn't taste any rosemary at all. It didn't taste bad but I didn't think it was what was described on the menu. My husband's dinner, the side vegetables and dessert were good.

This was the first time visiting The Hake and it did not disappoint. We decided to go with a trio of small plates/starters/appetizers, something I highly recommend when visiting a restaurant for the first time. The octopus, mussels, and shrimp & calamari were all excellent not to mention pretty big portions for starters. Great service from our waitress and she had some good insight too. The craft cocktails were also VERY VERY good.

This new-ish restaurant in La Jolla was a nice surprise. The food is very good ... we made a meal from a large selection of small plates and all were delish. The one downer was that our server appeared to be a novice. He tried hard but made several mistakes ... brought only one gazpacho when two were ordered; substituted one tuna dish for another; didn't offer the wine to be tasted before he poured it. Another waiter who came by a few times seemed more experienced/professional. Hopefully, the newbie will learn .. before our next visit!

We LOVE this restaurant! It is always consistent with quality and taste. Our daughter was in town to visit and she loves to come back here. The Hamachi melts in your mouth and the flavor is such a blend of ingredients - it's difficult to describe - you just have to try it! The Tuna steak sandwich was great as well as the greek sandwich - one of our regular staples. The cheese potatoes, fries and ceviche are also FABULOUS! We also always have to have at least one Mandarine Mule while here! While no view, the service is always very attentive and we just can't say enough about how much we enjoy eating here. Of course, we'll be back

Food was quite good but the place is all hard surfaces and too harshly noisy for our comfort even when not really full, so we won't return for now. Service was amiable and generally very attentive, but waitperson didn't mention they were out of swordfish, one of just a few main course fish, making selection disappointing. Hamachi starter was excellent, shrimp tacos just ok. Octopus very nicely grilled, tender, excellent flavor and interesting sides- would be better as a starter than a main. Extensive selection of beers & wine list also appeared good.
