The service at The Hake was fantastic, the food was great, and the cocktails were divine. The bartender came out and talked to us about each one we ordered and we had a very pleasant conversation. 10/10 would recommend trying it out. Come during happy hour will help with the bill as it is a bit pricey.

I chose this restaurant by reviewing Yelp comments. However, the food was not special and the waiter we had was competent, at best. I can't remember the last time we were not presented with the dessert menu before we were asked if there was anything else...? I will not be returning and I will not be recommending it to anyone else.

Dull and uninspired in every respect. The servers were nice, but disorganized even though there were very few guests. Food: octopus wasn' t bad; some sort of tuna tostada was nondescript.

Everything was great, except the chicharron de Atun was too salty to eat. It's usually one of favorite dishes, but not that night. We had a guest from Australia and had been raving about it, so it was particularly disappointing.

Even though the food and service is outstanding the noise level is unbearable. The noise level is the only thing that can ruin a perfect dinner. During my dinner it reached around 95 dB, as a comparison a jet engine in is around 100 dB. Basically it feels like dinning next to a jet engine for around 2 hours.

A mixed party of five, we had a variety of seafood and meat entrées, preceded by salads and topped off with desserts. All were outstanding. The table service was excellent; well-timed and courteous. Prices were reasonable given the overall quality of the food and service. The sole mis-step was a host who addressed me rudely when we sought to change our reserved table.

My wife and I went to The Hake in mid-August to celebrate our anniversary. The service was good, but our server was very inexperienced and/or very busy. However, the host stepped in and provided excellent service over and above the waiter. In particular his recommendation of the whole snapper was excellent. We also had a smattering of appetizers and cocktails/wine - all were great. Would definitely return. Only downside is there's no view - but you can get that walking around before/afterwards.

Of the several places we ate in La Jolla, this was my overall favorite, beating out many of the higher priced, more well-known options. It is relaxed, with a very inventive menu, and preparations which merged Japanese and Mexican cuisines in a fun, surprising, and really tasty manner! The service is impeccable and very, very welcoming. I would return in a heartbeat!

  • Not what we expected

We ate at The Hake our last night in La Jolla and while it was good it wasn't what we expected. The wait staff were very nice but they seemed to be constantly running between the tables and we were not able to relax in that atmosphere. I ordered the Bone-in Rosemary Crusted Pork Chop. First there was no bone in my pork chop. It was pounded thin and so breaded it looked like a chicken fried steak. I didn't taste any rosemary at all. It didn't taste bad but I didn't think it was what was described on the menu. My husband's dinner, the side vegetables and dessert were good.

This was the first time visiting The Hake and it did not disappoint. We decided to go with a trio of small plates/starters/appetizers, something I highly recommend when visiting a restaurant for the first time. The octopus, mussels, and shrimp & calamari were all excellent not to mention pretty big portions for starters. Great service from our waitress and she had some good insight too. The craft cocktails were also VERY VERY good.

This new-ish restaurant in La Jolla was a nice surprise. The food is very good ... we made a meal from a large selection of small plates and all were delish. The one downer was that our server appeared to be a novice. He tried hard but made several mistakes ... brought only one gazpacho when two were ordered; substituted one tuna dish for another; didn't offer the wine to be tasted before he poured it. Another waiter who came by a few times seemed more experienced/professional. Hopefully, the newbie will learn .. before our next visit!

We LOVE this restaurant! It is always consistent with quality and taste. Our daughter was in town to visit and she loves to come back here. The Hamachi melts in your mouth and the flavor is such a blend of ingredients - it's difficult to describe - you just have to try it! The Tuna steak sandwich was great as well as the greek sandwich - one of our regular staples. The cheese potatoes, fries and ceviche are also FABULOUS! We also always have to have at least one Mandarine Mule while here! While no view, the service is always very attentive and we just can't say enough about how much we enjoy eating here. Of course, we'll be back

Food was quite good but the place is all hard surfaces and too harshly noisy for our comfort even when not really full, so we won't return for now. Service was amiable and generally very attentive, but waitperson didn't mention they were out of swordfish, one of just a few main course fish, making selection disappointing. Hamachi starter was excellent, shrimp tacos just ok. Octopus very nicely grilled, tender, excellent flavor and interesting sides- would be better as a starter than a main. Extensive selection of beers & wine list also appeared good.

I love everything about this retro chic basement restaurant on Prospect. The decor, food, service and ambiance make this spot a real find for me. There are several seating options: inside, the front basement patio or the leafy side patio adjacent to a courtyard. If you can't decide, you can sit (as we did) next to the open floor to ceiling patio doors and enjoy being inside with the feel of outdoors! My husband and I went for brunch on Saturday and were offered infused water as soon as we sat down - great start! The eclectic selection of delicious brunch items was so tempting I was hard pressed to select one, but we both opted for airy light and delicious open faced omelets and a side of amazing lemon ricotta crepes. Love The Hake!

We went for happy hour and were pleased with our experience. We ordered a bottle of wine (20% off) and happy hour appetizers at very reasonable prices. We had the Spanish Bikini, Avocado Tacos, Angus Beef Sliders from the Happy Hour Menu and the Rib-eye Lettuce Wrap from the Dinner Menu. All were different & tasty…a pleasant surprise. The sliders were our favorites. The wine was very nice as was the table water (infused with cucumber, mint & melon). We will definitely go back and try some entrees at some point.

We dined for brunch on what looked like a very slow day. Only a few other tables were occupied. Despite the restaurant being nearly empty, the waitress never came back to check on us after the food was served. The server never asked how we were doing or if we needed anything else. My out of town guests asked for coffee refills three times before she received a refill. Her cup went empty multiple times. The food orders arrived cold and we asked to have the food warmed up, which the server did. Food was decent after it came out the second time. Upon leaving the restaurant, the server saw us leaving but did not acknowledge or thank us. Even though we had a Travelzoo deal we should not be treated like this.

we were a group of 6 for happy hour. And there were several other groups there at the same time. So, it was very noisy, which on one hand means it is popular - but did make conversation difficult. If you want to talk though, ask for a table away from the bigger bar tables. The food was excellent and worth the trip, especially the tuna tostadas and the avocado tacos - tiny morsels of deliciousness.
