With a farm-to-table approach focusing on fresh seafood and an upscale casual brasserie-style atmosphere, The Hake offers a unique global-inspired menu created by Chefs Federico Rigoletti and Roberto Craig of Mexico City's Puntarena Restaurant fame.

  • "Food was quite good but the place is all hard surfaces and too harshly noisy for our comfort even when not really full, so we won't return for now. Service was amiable and generally very attentive, but waitperson didn't mention they were out of swordfish, one of just a few main course fish, making selection disappointing. Hamachi starter was excellent, shrimp tacos just ok. Octopus very nicely grilled, tender, excellent flavor and interesting sides- would be better as a starter than a main. Extensive selection of beers & wine list also appeared good."

  • "I love everything about this retro chic basement restaurant on Prospect. The decor, food, service and ambiance make this spot a real find for me. There are several seating options: inside, the front basement patio or the leafy side patio adjacent to a courtyard. If you can't decide, you can sit (as we did) next to the open floor to ceiling patio doors and enjoy being inside with the feel of outdoors! My husband and I went for brunch on Saturday and were offered infused water as soon as we sat down - great start! The eclectic selection of delicious brunch items was so tempting I was hard pressed to select one, but we both opted for airy light and delicious open faced omelets and a side of amazing lemon ricotta crepes. Love The Hake!"

  • "We went for happy hour and were pleased with our experience. We ordered a bottle of wine (20% off) and happy hour appetizers at very reasonable prices. We had the Spanish Bikini, Avocado Tacos, Angus Beef Sliders from the Happy Hour Menu and the Rib-eye Lettuce Wrap from the Dinner Menu. All were different & tasty…a pleasant surprise. The sliders were our favorites. The wine was very nice as was the table water (infused with cucumber, mint & melon). We will definitely go back and try some entrees at some point."

  • "We dined for brunch on what looked like a very slow day. Only a few other tables were occupied. Despite the restaurant being nearly empty, the waitress never came back to check on us after the food was served. The server never asked how we were doing or if we needed anything else. My out of town guests asked for coffee refills three times before she received a refill. Her cup went empty multiple times. The food orders arrived cold and we asked to have the food warmed up, which the server did. Food was decent after it came out the second time. Upon leaving the restaurant, the server saw us leaving but did not acknowledge or thank us. Even though we had a Travelzoo deal we should not be treated like this."

  • "we were a group of 6 for happy hour. And there were several other groups there at the same time. So, it was very noisy, which on one hand means it is popular - but did make conversation difficult. If you want to talk though, ask for a table away from the bigger bar tables. The food was excellent and worth the trip, especially the tuna tostadas and the avocado tacos - tiny morsels of deliciousness."

  • "So far as I can tell, The Hake is the best seafood restaurant I've been to in San Diego. This was my second trip to The Hake, and once again the food was spectacular. Everything we ordered was expertly prepared, and quite delicious. Our server seemed new, and service seemed somewhat slow; I know that could be the result of many factors, but I do suspect that it was due to our server, since once we placed our food order things seemed to speed up. It was certainly not enough to prevent us coming back, just something to note if you're looking to be in and out in any sort of hurry. Our party of four were there for just about two hours, and we ordered appetizers and dessert."

  • "We were visiting from out of town and went to the Hake for dinner. We sat out on their little patio. The food was amazing, so good in fact, we went back a second time in the same week. Dan, the manager, made sure our dining experience was enjoyable and the wait staff was very attentive without being obtrusive. We had the swordfish with lemon risotto the first night. The swordfish was very well prepared and was flaky and tender. The lemon risotto went perfect with it. The second visit I had the steak frittes and my son had the pork chop. Again the preparations were wonderful. You also should try the shaved ribeye lettuce wraps appetizer and the key lime pie is to die for. Overall I would highly recommend this little gem."

  • "The Hake has excellent food and excellent service. I've been 3x now and have been happy every time. The menu has a great selection of tapas style seafood dishes which we always opt for instead of the mains. If you order a main, the Seared Tuna is outstanding. Every small plate we've had has been fabulous. My only complaint is the overall atmosphere. Although I understand the bistro concept, overall it's too brightly lit and the mirrors lining the walls at an angle mean you stare at yourself for your entire meal if facing the wall...something distracting and unfortunate! I'd love this place all the more if they'd glam it up a bit, and make it more romantic. The food calls for a beautiful environment to savor it in!"

  • "I'd heard good things about this place and wanted to try it. It was very easy to get a table with no wait, which can be difficult in the La Jolla Cove. It's a cute place and all of the food, as well as the service was good. I would say that the selection we made from the raw fish menu was very good...the fish was fresh and high quality and the flavors of the dish were great. "

  • "Overall the restaurant is good, my wife and I both enjoyed our food but we were not blown away, culinary speaking. We had the lettuce wraps and the shrimp fideo which were tasty, lettuce wraps are small (labeled as snack), diavolo on the other hand was very large (entire skillet worth). For main courses, I had the seared tuna steak which was cooked to perfection but not pre sliced over the wasabi mashed potatoes as it usually is prepared. Just the steak plopped down on the potatoes. Flavor was overall bland I thought as the mashed potatoes didn't really add to much to the character of the dish and the soy butter did add much either. My wife had the striped bass which she said she enjoyed. Overall 3 stars we both felt. "

  • "As longtime residents we have been to many restaurants in this location underneath Georges on Prospect but this is the first winner. The food is fresh interesting delicious and memorable. Latin with Asian influence. Peruvian would be the closest cuisine if it had to be labeled. The service was extraordinary from top to bottom. We have already made a reservation to return. I'm sure one of many returns. It was like spending the afternoon in a Parisian or Barcelona bistro. We were enchanted! "

  • "My wife and I wanted a special dinner for the last day of our stay in La Jolla. We could have gone for the view but we decided to go for the food. The Hake was the perfect choice! The food, the staff were perfect! There are a lot of eating options in that area, but we were lucky to find the best one !"
