  • "We came here for my boyfriend's birthday dinner, both of us were first-timers. He rarely travels outside of San Antonio and I wanted to give him a date-night he would always remember. Once we entered, I realized I had chosen the most perfect place! The dim lighting, romantic and cozy ambiance was exactly what I wanted for us. Looking at the menu, there were so many wonderful dishes to choose from but we both went with chicken; Chicken Picatta for me and Mediterranean Chicken for him. Both plates were exquisite and the veggies on my plate needed no seasoning at all. Miles was our server and he was wonderful....We will definitely be back!"

  • "What a beautiful restaurant! The ambiance was so relaxing and romantic. I met up with my best friend from high school. We both have kids and Friday night was our "date night". I have to say gruene door exceeded my expectations for our quiet time! Miles was our waiter and was extremely pleasant. He was very attentive and continued to check on our needs throughout the evening. 2 thumbs up! Food was fabulous! Especially the tuna and sautéed spinach! Definitely coming back soon!"

  • "The food was amazing. The ideas were clever and delicious, but not contrived or too artistic to be enjoyed. Simple ingredients were combined in the best ways. We also had great service. The atmosphere is nice, a bit loud, but not raucous. Definitely a place to try. A bit expensive for New Braunfels but well worth it,"

  • "We never miss eating here when we are in Gruene! This time we went with friends and I was thrilled that they loved the food as much as we did! Favorite foods: spinach salad, shrimp and grits and flash fried spinach. Yum yum. With concrete floors it can be really loud but we can put up with that."

  • "1st time visitors and the experience was awesome. The food was hot and tasty the staff was pleasant and knowledgeable. Would recommend definitely! Not for kids but somehow several couples borough them, and let them wander away from the table. Get a babysitter!!"

  • "Dinner at The Gruene Door this past Sunday night was one of the best dining experiences we've ever had! Everything was spot on - staff, atmosphere, food and service were all outstanding. Our group of 5 ordered a wide variety of dishes and none of them disappointed. The evening was made extra special by the outstanding attention we received from our waiter: TODD. He was amazing! We will be back as soon as possible!"

  • "Went on Sunday morning. I did make a reservation but the restaurant was calm and quiet. Downtown Guerne was crazy but this restaurant was a nice quiet place for our family to visit and catch up."

  • "Gruene, Texas is a lovely historic tourist spot and the Gruene Door was everything counter to the theme of the city. It's located in a new strip mall center that really, really wants to mirror the open air, small town shopping/dining experience, but the whole place misses the mark completely. The meal itself was fair, the food wasn't horrific, but it definitely was not worth the outrageous price tag. Your average dinner plate is $22 versus $12-$14 in the actual real historic Gruene City Center. The restaurant itself is a little soul less, with concrete floors, alternative art on the walls and dark faux paint. The only upside was the impeccable and cheery service from the waitstaff who were very happy to be serving clients."

  • "I am a disabled vet with panic disorder. I have a hard time dining out in public because of various noise levels, location, too many people, etc. Public interaction can be too much for me and restaurant visits often end up in some comically awkward moment that involves spilled drinks or food - mostly on my part. However, with OpenTable, I was able to make a reservation & request something in a corner. We got to the restaurant and were whisked right in. The waitress was wonderful, well mannered, and accommodating. We truly felt like guests, the food was superb. I could not have been happier. I would recommend them for a quiet, low-key, conversational meal. Thumbs up and thank you for truly accommodating the broken veterans. Bart"

  • "The food was all very well prepared, succulent, complex, savory. Beer menu was lacking, and many of the selections offered were out of stock. Our server informed us that a menu change was planned, but they had no new offerings and many of the old were out of stock. I presume this was a short term issue, but still points to a failure in management planning and oversight. The waiter was competent, attentive and enthusiastic. The ambiance was quiet, would be appropriate for either a romantic or corporate dinner."

  • "Being a local native, I usually stray away from the "touristy" side of the area, but this charming restaurant stands out as an exception. It's EXCEPTIONAL. Period. The food is delicious, the service is attentive yet not invasive, and the location is perfect. All the way around this is a gem. 5 STARS from one of New Braunfels' toughest critics. My attendees and I will certainly return on a regular basis."

  • "Our meal was wonderful. Large portion of bruschetta for appetizer. We both got the shrimp and grits and they were the best we had ever had. Rich , hot and lots of flavor. It was so good we went back for brunch. Loved the salmon dish and the fash fried spinach. Tried the mousse for dessert thinking it would be just plain mousse. Nope! It was rich, tasty and in this yummy almond shell. We will definitely return!"

  • "The atmosphere was great. The wait staff was good to a point, started off being knowledgeable of the wine list and specials offered that night. We soon discovered that they were out of some of the menu items and my meal was brought out missing the scallops. This is where the wait staff stumbled a little, when asked what the special had in it again he commented it is missing the scallops. It was good that he knew but why did he not try to correct the issue to begin with. I hold the management accountable for the need for more training and the kitchen for presenting a dish that they should have not been proud of. I would have waited 5 more minutes to have it presented complete. All and all it was great meal with fair service."

  • "Very good food and great location. out doors dinning very nice too a long as its not too hot or cold. They do have outdor fire place. Some interior corner locatons can be cool when A/C is on...bring a jacket in the winter, its noisy inside and could use some kind of noise cancellation/absorbtion system or if you're old like me 60, lean in close to hear what the conversation is about if you care. We will go back. food is great."

  • "This was an event to Honor a person for their Birthday. The meal was a Sunday Brunch. The food selection was excellent. The wait staff was outstanding. The day was quiet, so we could really enjoy our time and hear the conversations easily. Great time had by all."

  • "We have eaten at the Gruene Door many times, and it has generally been good. During the past several months, however, it has become very hit and miss when it comes to food quality. We had a party of four. Two of us ordered the crab cakes, which had far too much breading and far too little crab. Moreover, the vegetables were very heavy on the garlic. My wife ordered a chicken dish. The chicken was overcooked and dry. She took most of it home, but then threw it out after she reconsidered eating it again. New Braunfels needs more good restaurants and Gruene Door has potential, but it's becoming far to inconsistent. Very disappointing!"

  • "So loud! We are young but this place was so loud the waiter couldn't hear our order! Can't really chat when you can't hear. Food was good but not great. Overpriced for the area and I've had fine dining around the world; i'm willing to pay for it if it's amazing, but if it's just average then it's not work the money. The steak was shaped like a block and had a hard crust around it. Also kida weird but the stead was cut in the same of a tall square, not the normal steak cut, so that was weird. Fish was OK but could have used a sauce besides a decorative thing around the plate. Spinach and artichoke was great and it has a charming courtyard outside. Wouldn't go back for the food; I'd go back to have a drink on their patio but that's all."

  • "I've been to the Gruene Door many times and enjoyed the meal and service. However, on New Year's Eve, the service was subpar from the start. I called and made a 7:30 dinner reservation only to arrive (on time) and be told that my reserved table had been given to someone else. Interestingly, I was seated next to that table and the customers remained at that table for almost the same duration of time that I was in the restaurant. This infers that they were given the table shortly before we arrived. Next, our server was very nice but offered me a large styrofoam cup for my water; there were no clean glasses. The cup didn't fit with a $100+ dinner."

  • "My wife had the salmon but the sauce was similar to BBQ. I had the drum and it was quite good. Both the broccoli and spinach were delicious. Crab cakes as appetizer were tasty too. Tito's Tini was nice drink."

  • "We enjoyed an excellent array of menu items and fine service, but could hardly hear ourselves think given the noise level in the main dining room. There were two tables of very loud people, but to make it worse the room is all hard surfaces with nothing to abate the noise. This significantly diminished what would otherwise be a fine dining experience. Would be great if the owners could remedy this problem! We'll be back, but only to eat in the much quieter bar or outside."

  • "It's not very often these days one encounters a new dining experience where everyone in the party is extremely pleased with his/her choices. The Gruene Door did not disappoint when looking for a new dining experience. The Shrimp and Grits - quite possibly the best I've ever had; ditto for the Chicken Piccata and the appetizers (particularly the hummus spread) were outstanding. Highly recommend this little Gruene gem to anyone celebrating, or just on a quest for great food."

  • "My party of 8 went there for post-graduation dinner. We went here mostly because they took reservations and the reviews seemed good. The ambiance was really nice and the shopping complex it's in is very cute. The food was ok but not fantastic. Our food took a long time to come out. When it did, my dad's and step-mom's $35 steaks were tough and chewy. Not quite worth the money. Our experience was not bad but it didn't quite live up to my expectations. Other reviews of the restaurant were really great and I feel like our experience didn't measure up."

  • "Discovered this little gem about 3 years ago and while I live in Houston I go everytime I am near Gruene. One of my favorites. Their shrimp and grits are to die for (and I am originally from Louisiana, so I should know). Have had several other items all equally as good. After dinner its fun to walk around all the neat shops in Gruene and then can dance at Gruene Hall, Texas's oldest dance hall if you are in the mood."
