We feature ingredient driven cuisine with Mediterranean and Southern influences. Evoking memories of groceries past, the Grocery's menu displays a commitment to sustainability through Chef Johnson's relationships with local and regional farmers and fishermen. The restaurant also features house-made charcuterie and an in-house canning program, which helps preserve the harvest. For a communal dining experience, guests are encouraged to share the small and large plates on the continually-evolving menu.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Uniquely shaped bar with cocktails you won't see anywhere else. I loved the Blackberry Cup, refreshing with cucumbers and cucumber vodka. Great ambience in a large but cozy farmhouse-style room. The left side of the menu features fresh vegetables as small plates/apps/sides - it was difficult to narrow down the list because I think we would have enjoyed each one. We shared the roasted potatoes in duck fat (that dill creme fraiche!!), sweet corn pudding (chanterelles!!), beet salad (blueberries!!), and the cauliflower (soft egg!!). SO MUCH YUM. Next course - a fabulous piece of halibut over a bed of succotash with a bright lemony juice. I highly recommend this restaurant to any and everyone!"

  • "Another great meal at the grocery. The cauliflower with soft egg, lamb sausage, beet salad, gazpacho, and scallop crude were superb. Best beet salad I've ever had."

  • "We have been frequent Charleston diners for the past 8 years and have our favorites! We have been trying to branch out and try some of the newer choices on upper King and were not disappointed. The food was great. We enjoyed the decor and loved doing the small plates. Service was a bit off but nothing that would keep us from returning. Definitely do an assortment of small and large plates and share!!! Loved the Okra and heirloom tomato with herbed Burrata"

  • "Loved dining at Grocery. The food was delicious, our server was friendly and attentive, and we enjoyed the open kitchen layout so we could watch the food prep! Great experience!"

  • "Wonderful flavors in nearly every dish. Small plates are just the right size for sharing. Unu choices on wine list. Tried a wonderful red blend from Spain. This restaurant works very hard to please. Just delicious! Great staff, too."

  • "We started with the piggy plate, it was to die for, the best part of the night. Five samples of house made charcuterie with toast, mustard, picked veggies. The charcuterie was so unusual and unique, the flavors dance in your mouth, the fat melts on your tongue. The waitress recommended the fried oysters on deviled eggs sauce, which were pretty meh. Far tastier was the Wagyu tartare and the marrow brulee. We ate them together, combining the muskiness of the marrow with the brighter flavors in the tartare and it was perfection. The scallop crudo was not as strong as the other dishes. I highly recommend for the Piggy Plate alone. If I went again I'd pay the bit extra to try more of the cured meats. Loved the inventiveness and risks taken here."

  • "I have to say that I was blown away by our entire experience at The Grocery. We were celebrating our anniversary and the staff couldn't have been more wonderful. They promptly brought us champagne to toast with and after dinner brought us a complementary dessert. Our meals were amazing! I loved everything but the beet salad was outstanding and the tomato and burrata salad was to die for! Charleston is a town with an abundance of fine food. However, The Grocery stands out as one of the best!"

  • "Totally turned off by the bartender. We ordered 2 drinks and my husband asked if he should return to get drinks and the bartender said yes but then he brought us the drinks and said he was breaking protocol. Later, we dined. Left credit card and did not realize it until the following day. Called and waitress said she had the card in hand and took down our address and said she would mail it. We haven't recevied it. we have called and talked with mgr. and even went by there tonight and talked with mgr and everything seems to be a mystery. The mgr.. seemed to be bored that we were still asking about it. She told us to cancel the card. She seemed very unconcerned"

  • "This was my first time to The Grocery but it will not be the last. I went there with my husband and a friend who is a vegan. The farmers plate they recommended for him sounded so good to my husband (who is not a vegan) that he too decided to have it. They both loved it. The cauliflower dish i had and the fish was amazing.I had heard that the food was great and i was not disappointed. This will not be the last time we eat there and i will definitely send my friends there to try it out. The desserts looked amazing so we will have to try those next time we go there."

  • "The food is amazing here. All dishes are well prepared, and very special from a restaurant of New American cuisine. We like the Wagyu steak, scallop and pork belly, and fried egg plant."

  • "My wife and I celebrated her birthday at The Grocery and it was fantastic! Luckily we had reservations. The found was outstanding, quite a variety and lots of things we've never seen on a menu before (that's a good thing!). Can't wait until my next trip to Charleston to go back."

  • "The Grocery is a nice addition to the high quality choices in Charleston. We enjoyed the small plates (the larger entrees looked enormous headed to other tables) and the informal atmosphere. The server was helpful in making good choices--and it's worth asking to get a sense of the size of the plates and the nature of the dish. Go here to stretch the palate and enjoy the experience of eating."

  • "I was a little concerned when we first arrived that the menu was so short. But after the waitress explained that it changed depending on food availability and that everything was fresh and local we dove in and tried many different things! To say it was amazing is an understatement. We will definitely return here and try many more of the offerings!"

  • "The first time we had dinner at The Grocery in April it was outstanding though the dessert was mediocre. This past week I was very disappointed with just about everything. While my duck breast was very good but even that was a little tough. Our appetizers, Piggy plate and palmetto cheese bites were okay and our dessert the peanut butter pie was awful. Our cocktails and server were excellent. I'm not sure I would go back because if I'm going to spend that amount of money I would expect better. :("

  • "The vegetables and salad seemed as if they had been harvested immediately before preparation. The preparations themselves were impeccable. This was truly one of the best meals I have ever had."

  • "The grocery was delightful. Our reservation was honored. The food delicious and very fresh. The service was a bit too fast. We got our appetizers before our drinks and were served our entees immediately after sharing 4 appetizers. We commented it was only an hour. We asked for a break before ordering dessert. The ambience is simple but we noticed the beautiful reclaimed wood bar and the antique safe at the hostess desk where they store the menues. Very cool!"

  • "Came last year and loved it. This year our waiter was not attentive. Not helpful with food descriptions. Two if us ordered drinks we did not like or even drink. He never asked us if we liked our drinks. Would have liked to change drink but he never asked if we were happy. Water got low. Had to pay for drinks we did not drink. Only bad experience at a restaurant all weekend. Probably won't be back because felt bad I made the recommendation"

  • "We split a bunch of plates and got to try a lot of cool stuff. The desserts were so tasty - sweet corn ice cream and churros with an array of dips. Really yummy!"

  • "The Grocery's food was definitely great farm-to-table restaurant with a nice menu. My boyfriend and I shared several appetizers and small plates for our dinner, so we could try a variety of things on the menu. The food all tasted excellent, but the portions seemed a little off for the price. Our small plate dishes were smaller in portion than the appetizers, and we left still feeling hungry. The service was still great and the food itself was delicious."

  • "Menu had changed slightly since my last visit, but still impressed. 4 of 5 had never been here before & were a little skeptical of menu at first. However, we tried a # of smaller plates and enjoyed everyone of them, In fact, we skipped entrees and placed a second order or smaller plates with only a one repeat (i.e. tuna). Drink list is also worth trying. Don't forget desserts. Just ask for only salted caramel if you order the churros."

  • "We came to The Grocery for the small plates, since we like to try a lot of different things. The hits of the evening were the heirloom tomato salad and the sweet corn ice cream dessert--very fresh and creative. Our only disappointment was the pig skin pad thai, which seemed like a small serving of mushy pad thai. The service staff was friendly and appropriately attentive throughout the evening. Cocktails were fun and refreshing for a summer evening. On its own, the food wasn't the standout, but the combination of food, drinks and service made it a pleasant experience."

  • "We found the found to be excellent, the restaurant attractive. The service was a bit below what I would expect of such a restaurant - a bit slow and not attentive enough to refilling beverages."

  • "Interesting menu with unique foods but disappointed in lack of flavor after we waited for our 9pm reservations and weren't seated until almost 9:30. Restaurant was noisy. Nice that parking was available next to restaurant."

  • "The Grocery is excellent. We ordered four dishes to share and loved each one, and with a drink for each of us, we found our total at only $78. This felt so reasonable considering the quality of the food. I had a wreckfish in minestrone broth and especially enjoyed the eggplant and kale with honey. The booth was roomy. I could imagine bringing my less foodie parents there as well. In the sea of new restaurants on Upper King and as a native Charlestonian, I'm pleased to recommend this to both locals and tourists."

  • "Great food! Great wines. The blend of local flavors is amazing and everything is fresh as of the day, so they print their menus every day. The chef even prepared a vegetarian option for one of us. The sides were almost as good as the main course. The mash potatoes were out of this world!"

  • "We ate brunch at The Grocery last week. From the young lady at the front desk to the wait staff everyone was very pleasant and provided great service. We had a Bloody Mary at the bar before we sat down for brunch and it was very good. We had the Sausage sandwich and the Fritata with fried oysters and both were excellent. We also ordered two side items, Cheese grits and an order of Bacon, both were great. I would love to try it for dinner sometime, but overall a very nice experience."

  • "My husband and I ate at the Grocery, based on good reviews. We were impressed with the salads and my corn/crabmeat appetizer was delicious. However, be prepared for small portions that are not going to fill you up! My husband ordered the grilled scallops and pork belly entree, and for $24 we both agreed that one should get more than three scallops and one piece of pork."

  • "We had had 2 very good experiences at The Grocery previously, so took guests there Thursday night. The menu had changed, the food was ordinary, the value, poor. The "piggy platter" was anemic. We were embarrassed and will not return. $350+ was WAY too much for what we received. We were served nothing that we would want to eat again. There are far better restaurants in Charleston."

  • "Being a local there are so many good restaurants to choose from here in Charleston. I never gave The Grocery a thought until a friend mentioned they had gone there last week, and just loved it. We were celebrating a couple of nice things that had happened in our lives, and thought we would try it out. It was top notch food and now our favorite place to go. Great produce, the scallops were huge, and the service was perfect."

  • "The Grocery has an outstanding menu that would please any palate. The open kitchen allows you to smell what's cooking and creates a homey atmosphere. There are various small menu items that can be shared and the best part is there are also large items that can be shared. We had a seafood paella that was excellent! You must go!"
