  • "I have been to the Grocery several times and have always had a great experience. You really get a since of the chef's love of the freshest available ingredients. We were so happy to get soft shell crab (Grocery was first restaurant in town to get them) and the asparagus was amazing. At each visit I have tried something new and I appreciate the knowledgeable service and artful presentation. And the off the street parking is such an added plus! Definitely one of Charleston's best. • "Food was amazing. I had the duck, wife had pork schnitzel which were cooked to perfection. I have an onion allergy. The chef noted it and adjusted my dish accordingly. My wife ordered potatoes. My waiter, Corey, a very delightful young man, saw that I was eating my wife's potatoes. He said there were onions in the potatoes. He substituted another dish and took the potatoes off the bill. You don't find service like that snywhere snymore. I would recommend this restaurant to everyone who loves and appreciates fabulous food and service."

  • "First time at The Grocery and loved it. Great menu and fun atmosphere - better suited for groups than quiet dinner I think. Corey our server was attentive and really helped with suggestions for the menu and made us feel welcome. Will definitely be going back!"

  • "We did. Five of them. Not in the mood for an entre (!) we took one look at the appetizers and ordered the tartar, fried oysters, shad roe, and more. Roasted green olives interesting, and good. That shad roe very good. So we're the six oysters with tiny pickle slices on a bed of deviled egg. Great stuff. Service attentive and very efficient. Some plates better than others but this is a great restaurant."

  • "Wonderful surprise. Imaginative drinks and short but diverse wine list. The bites (appetizers) were uniformly interesting. Entrees were equally impressive. From the limited number of "Table" servings, we chose a whole fish, a Sea Bass which had been roasted upright in a horizontal position so that both sides came out cross hatched and beautifully roasted sitting on a bed of julienned onions, lemons and petit potatoes. All dessert selections were well beyond the norm in the selection of ingredients and presentation. Highly recommended place for an informal dinner"

  • "Portions very small. Food tasty. Small bites and appetizers extremely small."

  • "We were looking for a place with good food, but casual, rather than fancy. This was in walking distance from the Cannonboro Inn near MUSC, which was perfect. They do have parking, but it's limited. A former furniture warehouse, you'll love it if you love pork in any form - it's a specialty; but they also have seafood and veggies. Busy even on a Sunday night, with lots of locals who have discovered it. My husband loved the fried oyster appetizer and triggerfish entree. I liked the tagliatelle carbonara. It's NOT inexpensive, and portions were smaller than many restaurants are serving these days, which was fine with us."

  • "Portions very small- very overpriced. Some plates were cool to room temperature. Wine list too pricey until we asked about a more reasonably priced wine which wasn't on list. Food was creative- fried oysters was best option we tasted. Would not recommend this to friends."

  • "I have dined at The Grocery many times and always had a wonderful experience. The food never disappoints and on this most recent visit was great, as always! Unfortunately, the Sunday service team was sub par. Our waiter did not seem very knowledgeable and seemed almost nervous at the table. Also, another server tried to clear a plate from our table that had just been set down and still had over half the food on it and we were clearly still enjoying it. We had to stop him from taking it away. We were entertaining an out of town guest on this particular night and, unfortunately, did not receive the wonderful service we have on all of our previous visits. However, we still love The Grocery and will return."

  • "Everything about The Grocery was wonderful. The reservation was confirmed by a friendly employee. We were greeted warmly by the hostess & seated immediately. Our server was on point with recommendations and attentiveness. The food was amazing! We had the Triggerfish & the Seabass. Both were amazing with the farro sidedish. Go to the Grocery-You won't be disappointed!"

  • "Fabulous meal! The whole fish is amazing. The Grocery is a standout operation!!"

  • "The food was unbelievable. The hostess/restaurant manager lady didn't try too hard to accommodate us, but she was probably really stressed about bridge run weekend. I'll definitely go again."

  • "The lighting was far too bright for dinner. This led to a number of other patrons being boisterous and obnoxious. The portions were far too small when compared to similar priced restaurants in the area. The descriptions in the menu were misleading. The carbonara was nothing like a typical carbonara and it was virtually flavorless. The duck confit was decent, but the accompanying vegetables were dismal. Confit is a small portion in itself. It needs substantial vegetables/starches. Three pieces of asparagus does not count. I will say that the confit at several places near by is far superior; there was no glaze or sauce accompanying it. For the $100 I paid for 2, I would never recommend this place. Go to FIG, Cypress, or il cortile del re."

  • "We really enjoyed our dinner at the grocery. We ate at some of the best and most talked about restaurants while in Charleston and in our minds the Grocery needs to be talked about an recognized for its great food. We started with the duck wings. If they have this on the menu give it a try. These are crisp wings that are Thai style. The fish sauce adds a nice punch of flavor to the dish. We also had the salad which was nice and crisp. For the entrees we had fish. The trigger fish and sea bass. Both were cooked very nice but it was the accompanying vegetables that are the stand out and add depth to the flavor. The real star at the grocery is the sides. We had the roasted carrots and they were fantastic."

  • "One of the best meals I've had in Charleston in quite a while. We were a party of 3 for Sunday brunch and made an effort to order different entrees, which were all outstanding. Highly recommend the Grocery and will be back in the near future."

  • "Both the appetizer and entree were lacking flavor. Very small portions. Atmosphere and service were excellent."

  • "Love to show off our beautiful city. I took two visitors from "up north" to brunch on Sunday. The meal was delightful, atmosphere upbeat, decor a perfect blend of old and new, restroom immaculate. My guests were very impressed. I ordered quail and it just wasn't as super-tasty as everything else we had. The server noticed and with no prompting removed my meal from the check. I was very impressed with our experience."

  • "After being seated promptly at 9:15 for our 8:45 reservation (OK -it is difficult to nail the timing on the second turn of a table, but it is still a peeve), we asked for two glasses of chardonnay and were told they had no more "chardonnay by the glass." The restaurant was unwilling to pour a glass from its many other chard offerings. We opted instead on two glasses of virtually undrinkable pinor gris. Fortunately, the food arrived promptly and was quite good. Both the trigger fish and the wagyu steak were cooked to perfection. Having been to Grocery on prior occasions, this one was disappointing. If it matters that you are seated promptly or that you can actually carry on a conversation, you may want to look elsewhere."

  • "We had a fabulous meal here. The best I have had. The Grocery keeps getting better. Don't forget the cauliflower gratin or the whole sea bass with salsa verde. Exceptional. And our server was great and honest about steering us to the best selection. Lived the whole thing."

  • "Very accommodating of larger party. Table was ready when we arrived on a Saterday night at 8p. Very much appreciated. Staff well informed about menu and wine list.. Food excellent. Service was prompt, yet not pushy. Were very sensitive to the rhythm of our table. When we were ready to leave, check was prompt and even though it is inconvenient to split the tab, they did cheerfully. A good experience. Would include again when I have out of town guests. Represents the burgeoning foodie scene in Charleston very well."

  • "The Grocery was one of three evening meals during a recent short Charleston stay. Unique restaurant with creative dishes. Had the cassoulet which was fabulous. Even the accomodations for our vegetarian members were very flavorful and rich. Service was prompt and accommodating. Ambiance very conducive to a relaxed dinner. Nice experience."

  • "Five of us had dinner here for a birthday celebration; our table was perfectly located. It was in a corner, partially a banquette, and the noise level was not excessive. Our waiter was spot on and informative about the menu. GROCERY has become one of our favorite local neighborhood restaurants. The menu changes fairly often and so it is always fun to go and to discover another interesting take on mostly local ingredients. We always look forward to our return."

  • "I was not happy with our table in the middle of the room. Asked for a different table and was denied. Service was rushed. Food came out moments after our drinks arrived. Entree portion was very small. Bill arrived before I could order another drink."

  • "What a fun restaurant! We arrived nearly 45 minutes early but were seated immediately. It's a pleasant space, but noisy due to all of the hard surfaces. Since pickling and charcuterie are what the Grocery is known for, we started with the Piggy Plate and Pickle Plate--small plates of house-made sausages and pate and a plate of various pickled veg. I had Green Eggs and Ham, poached eggs that were lightly coated with crumbs and herbs (hence the green) served over delicious ham and corn griddle cakes. Husband had shrimp and grits which he enjoyed very much. Only one dessert was available--hot, crispy churros served with a trio of delicious sauces: salted caramel, creme anglais, and a spiced dark chocolate."

  • "The menu is definitely a foodie's delight. My sister and I enjoyed the steak tartar (which reminded us of our childhood). I had the scallops. And she had the crab pancetta. YUM! Much success. We'll be back!"

  • "I just love that every time I go here, the flavors are so different and yet the fare is always fantastic. It's exciting to always have something new to try--both menu and cocktail-wise and yet to always end up with those wildly delicious churros! We went with a group, some were really adventurous eaters and some were very conservative eaters. Everyone just raved. This place is a class act--beginning to end."

  • "Enjoying the small plates is fun and a neat way to explore various tastes. We had the large size Cassoulet which was more than adequate for 4 persons. Very reasonable prices considering. The food was delicious and we would return in a nano second."

  • "Excellent food with a flair; service was competent and friendly: menu was not overly long but hit all the bases and the selections were imaginative. Most of all it was nice to eat in a restaurant with parking and where you can actually converse with your dinner partner(s) without shouting!"

  • "Wood grilled squid is overpowered by cumin & vinegar; side of brussell sprouts ordered but not delivered with mains, but ended up as our favorite dish of the night. Server apologized and took it off the bill. Very convenient to Woolf Street Theater."

  • "Everything from Small Plates to Entrée Plates to the Sides was just outstanding. The oysters were as advertised, Triggerfish was exceptional and can't describe how delicious the Brussels Sprouts side dish was - - - This was our 1st visit here and we will definitely return on a future trip to Charleston."

  • "local scene-the restaurant is .in a vibrant renewal area of downtown Charleston. the idea of eating local produce, meats, etc. fun noisy and busy. the cassoulet as a main course was wonderful for 3. small plates some better than others.. we would return, a little bit pricey."
