Diner Reviews
  • "This was our first time at the restaurant. The food was alright, nothing to rave about - we had oysters which were heavily covered in flour and had no salt in it. Could hardly taste the oysters. The server got our order wrong and we had to wait a few more minutes for them to delivery the right food. The restaurant was also very noisy - the tables are set very close to each other. So if you want a nice quiet dinner or conversation with friends, this is not the place to go to. We will probably try it out one more time and check out other dishes. Overall, was an okay experience."

  • "Oysters are good. Workers were friendly but food needs tweaking. I little heavy on the seasonings. Crab cake dish overwhelmed by the seasonings. Lettuce wraps good but again almost overpowered by flavoring. Fruity mignonette sauce with oysters is not my thing. Great that they have an Oyster Stout on tap for us dark beer drinkers. I will give them a few more tries. Was packed on a Friday night. Glad they are doing a good amount of business."

  • "This is a great little neighborhood gem that we are so glad people told us about. The food is great and the people really take care of you. This time my son was celebrating that he just got published and two of the wait staff congratulated him and gave him the sweetest hot lava cake you ever saw (or ate!). It was fabulous, and so were they. My son can be super shy, so it meant a lot. To be more specific about food, we love the barbecue shrimp appetizer, the rockfish special was PERFECT, the fries crispy and hot, and the oysters superb. Thanks, keep up the great work, and we'll see you again soon!"

  • "I have dined there many times and only once have I had a less than satisfactory dining experience. The seafood is fresh and prepared well. The choice of oysters alone is enough to make me return. The fried Ipswitch clams are also consistently good, as is the rockfish when available. The service staff is young and seems well versed in the kitchen preparations. Service is not fussy nor is one ignored; they seem to have it just right. In summary, a insistently good restaurant and bar."

  • "This was my second time there. The first time was great, but this time was somewhat disappointing. The romaine in the caesar salad was a bit tired as was the lettuce on the po'boy. The cream of crab soup one diner ordered did not come, and we had to send back an oyster po'boy for the shrimp po'boy that was ordered. A warning to those who don't like spicy ... beware the sauce on the po'boy."

  • "Service was slow, food came out cold and waitress did not seemed concerned for our displeasure. In addition, entrees were served before we even finished our appetizers."

  • "The food was wonderful as was the service. I would recommend going at off hours unless you like shouting for conversation. I will go back for more but not at 7pm on a Friday night!"

  • "Wonderful food with the most personable staff. Very accommodating to their patrons."

  • "Good selection of oysters, entrees, and great service"

  • "Great atmosphere and the staff was really helpful and eager to please. Crabcake was disappointing -- a bit thin and overwhelmed by the bread (prior experience at lunch was better). Fish taco appetizer was pretty good. Definitely a welcome addition to the neighborhood."

  • "Great menu. Tremendous service and it is very reasonably priced. A part of two & we each had an appetizer, dinner, dessert and shared a bottle of wine for $100. Will be back!"

  • "My entire family joined me for dinner at the Grilled Oyster yesterday. We had a 6 P.M. reservation and the restaurant was packed with other families. Our server was so good. She took our drink and appetizer order so that we could peruse the dinner selections. Both the drinks and appetizers came quickly and were top notch. The mussels were large and juicy and the broth was a delicious finish along with garlic bread that accompanied it. The oysters on the half-shell were scrumptious. And dinner was wonderful. We will definitely return!"

  • "Delicious! The spinach and grapefruit salad was light and refreshing. The cioppino was well balanced and full of flavor. The fresh berry purée on the premium vanilla gelato in the Olliejack was a wonderful surprise. Each table is served with carrots, celery and flatbread crackers - a wonderful start to the meal for this gluten free diner! No menu items are marked gluten free. In general, our waiter seemed distracted and the service was lackluster. He couldn't make gluten free suggestions, but the kitchen did verify that the dish I chose was gf. Unfortunately, the noise level, even in the back "quiet" room, so overwhelmed my parents that I do not know whether we will return, despite the high quality of the food."

  • "Food & service was very good, as usual. It's always busy during prime time, so be warned that if you want to go there for a quiet dinner, that will not be the case. It's really not an issue for me, but for others, it may be."

  • "First time was fantastic. Went early with the kids. Fun atmosphere. Food was great. Waiter was very knowledgeable and helpful, without being pushy. Good time had by all. Second time not so great. Waitress was very friendly, but not as knowledgeable and forgot things. Food quality not as good, considering the prices. Also too crowded and noisy. Hoping this was just bad luck and we go back to first experience."

  • "Took my wife, daughters and their husbands to dinner to celebrate my wife's birthday. Food and service were outstanding. Servers were knowledgeable and friendly. We ordered a variety off the menu and everyone's meal was cooked to perfection and was served hot. Looking forward to a return visit."

  • "Nice menu! Lots of choices! We enjoyed the food and the casual ambiance."

  • "We had a wonderful waiter except he was hard to understand between his accent and the noise level of the restaurant. His service was never the less, perfect. The food was delicious, perfectly sized and with a beautiful presentation. The owner(s) were very solitious and frequently came by to inquire how everything was. Although it was very full, noisy and a lot of people were waiting, we never felt rushed. Prices seemed very appropriate."

  • "Sincere congrats to the owners on the great success of this restaurant, but success has made the place so noisy it is hard to hear your friends, even in a booth. Also, our waiter seemed to be in a real hurry to rush us through the meal. He kept clearing away plates (or trying to!) that still had food on them. He must have asked us three times if we were done with dessert. We were a party of four that stayed from 6:00 until just before 7:30 for appetizers, dinner and dessert. I understand they need to turn over tables, but we weren't lingering extraordinarily long. I have had problems here before, but keep coming back for the great fish. On Friday night, the cod with butternut squash risotto was about the best cod I've ever had."

  • "My friend and I enjoyed everything about the night - drinks, dinner, dessert. But we would not sit at the table open for us in the back room. We sat at bar instead. I think we would have left rather than sit in the back."

  • "Once the hostess got her act together which took a LONG time, everything was great. Fortunately that only took ten minutes of our 2 hour plus dinner. Kevin is the best server there, and Rick, the owner, truly cares about providing a great experience to his guests. Lobster is always wonderful and the wine list doesn't disappoint. I was treating a dear friend and once again, The Grilled Oyster came through."

  • "We have had outstanding food at the Grilled Oyster, but our most recent visit was a bit disappointing. I was seated prior to the arrival of my husband, and I had to ask three times for my server to come to the table. After our server noticed we were there, he was more attentive. We started with the calamari appetizer, which was hot, crispy, and lightly breaded -very tasty. The we ordered the flounder special for dinner. The dish came out lukewarm at best, suggesting it had been sitting around for a while before it was served. It was otherwise acceptable but not great. We had the chocolate lava cake for dessert. It was rich, warm, and very satisfying. Overall, a mixed experience."

  • "For a light dinner, this destination reliablely delivers what we needed in the way of fresh oysters, and a salad prepared as half an order. This time, I needed to eat only a small amout but for someone wishing more, the wait staff delivers whatever you wish. The kitchen is able and willing to accomodate dietary requirements, such as low sodium food and what arrives is specially delectible. A wide variety of choices is appreciated. The only complaint is the noise when the restaurant is full."

  • "Food was certainly good, but unremarkable. Our server wasn't really engaged. We made a specific table request, confirmed it during the day, and then when arrived for our reservation we were stuck in a dismal back room. Frying is a bit erratic - ranged from excellent (calamari) to curiously oily (fries). Wine list is typical MoCo - awful, and marked up 300-400%. For those who live within 3 miles of this relatively new establishment our choices for dining are limited. The place will succeed on that fact alone."

  • "Great food but our waitress vacillated between very attentive and MIA. Long wait to order, long wait for the check. That said, the food was delicious and I'd certainly go back!"

  • "We had a great dinner on Saturday night. I ordered the seafood special (Cobia and mushroom risotto). It was fantastic! My husband loved the rockfish, which is part of the fish trio. I would love to see the Rockfish as an entree by itself, as we are not big salmon fans. It is very cozy and we will definitely be going back."

  • "We had a great time for dinner on Saturday night. Their dinner seafood special was quite good, and everything sounded just as good as the next thing. Can't wait to go back and try the rest of the menu."

  • "I have been to this restaurant once before. The menu has a fairly wide selection. We started with oysters, the raw ones were very fresh and tasty and the southwestern ones were done well although the sauce lacked some zip. We split one of the house special salads. It had a crab mixture on it that tasted more like a tuna salad and was a bit disappointing. I had the snapper for an entrée and while it was good, it lacked anything that made it special. The drink selection and wine list was good and different. The food was good but not spectacular. If you're local, it's a great option but the food on this visit was not as good as the first time."

  • "This has been a favorite ever since it opened last year. With all the rush and demands of Valentine's Day Dinner, the Grilled Oyster met and exceeded expectations. They handled the rush with aplomb never missing a beat. Every course was delightful, especially the blackened tuna steak which was cooked to perfection. A great choice on a night when many are out to impress."

  • "Always attentive staff and a kitchen willing to prepare food for special dietary needs. The result is tasty and the seafood is so fresh...one would believe we were near the ocean...rather than in suburban DC."

  • "Our 3rd visit Friday night. Crowded and active bar area partly because of great happy hour deals. Took a little while to find our waiter. Once he came, things went smoothly. The menu is pretty much focused on seafood, particularly oysters, as you might expect. Crab cakes are good, French fries are very good. My only reservation is that there are not many nonshellfish options, but again, we should expect this from a restaurant with this name."
