A word from The Grille on Laurel
“This hidden gem, which is nestled along the tracks with a pretty flower-laden courtyard for dining, is one to put on regular rotation. Modern and chic, the dining room, with its black and white photos, dark wood seating and black leather half-banquettes that sit below an inset circular ceiling, is a great place for power lunches and weekend munchies. The lounge, which is separated from the dining room by a two-sided flagstone fireplace, is perfect for grabbing quick bites and catching a game. As for the food, it's hard to lose. Among starters, the garlicky shrimp de jonghe is rivaled by sweet-but-savory French onion soup that's better than what you find at most French bistros. An absolute must to follow is the macadamia nut-crusted grouper, which is cloaked in Greek-inspired herbs and served with a creamy-dreamy lemon-butter sauce. The Prime filet is no slouch either, especially when it's paired with grilled, still-crispy veggies and zesty mac 'n' cheese.”Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Love The Grille and it never dissapoints, all of the food is uncomplicated and unusally good with something for everyone. The new menu items are wonderful; I had the Kale Salad with chicken which was yummy, and my friend had the hot crab sandwich and said it was amzing. Can't wait to try the rest!"

  • "Everything was good, just not as good as when first opened. Not sure if we will return."

  • "My father and I had dinner here this week and enjoyed the Whitefish, something not served in many restaurants. It's served broiled and is very tender. My father ordered risotto, which he usually orders, and it was shown on the menu, but then our server told us they don't serve it anymore and customers are disappointed about that. I understand changing your menu, but why wouldn't you print new menus to reflect the change? Like I say, this place is good but I can't say great. Also, their rolls are awful. There is so much good bread out there that this is pure laziness."

  • "My son graduated Navy Boot camp and the 7 of us when for lunch afterwards. They provide the Sailor with the Dinner Menu and offer to cook them anything they want, which was Awesome! The food was great! We really enjoyed the location and the service was good! With 7 people in varying emotional states they were great! I would dine there again!"

  • "After having a great meal on Valentine's Day, we took friends with us this time. The place is Really noisy but the food - again - was outstanding! Service was good once it got started ( took longer than usual for water and ordering…. We decided that rather than complain about the noise ( not so much the entertainment but some large boisterous groups ), we'd ask for a seat in the bar and enjoy the music!! We can always talk on the way home so why not enjoy the really outstanding guitar player!"

  • "The start was a little slow -did not take our drink order or provide bread service for an extended period of time. Otherwise, great as always."

  • "Excellent food, local place for patrons, despite poor weather, it became crowded. We were not rushed though...spent the night visiting and enjoy our dinner and drinks! Would continue to recommend."

  • "Fabulous salmon and sautéed spinach my husband loved his dinner as well. The staff did well with it being Valentines Day, though We do not like sitting so close to the person next to us, we could hear each other's conversations. Not intimate nor romantic at all. Great food though"

  • "My husband and I had our Valentine's Day dinner here. I'd been there for brunch and a bridal shower but our dinner was a wonderful surprise. We both ordered steaks that were perfectly cooked and served with a delicious side of squash, zucchini, broccoli and cauliflower ( slightly crisp not mushy!!) and the potato of our choice ( I had mashed - yummy and my husband chose the steak fries, which he loved ). We started off with the crab cake appetizer served with a slightly sweet, very tasty dipping sauce. It was a really generous serving ( 4 cakes ) that we barely finished. We were seated in the cordoned off section of the private dining space so the ambiance wasn't great but our waiter was fabulous!"

  • "The food was amazing. The entertainer was very good. The waiter seem a little preoccupied with other tables so we felt a little ignored when we were waiting to give our orders and rushed when he was at our table. Even though the service was fair the food made up for it."

  • "We were the first group in for the day. I had made a reservation because we were in from out of town. Food was good, lots of options. My favorite was the French Onion Soup. Everyone in the group enjoyed their food and our special occasion was celebrated."

  • "My past dining experience was just okay. I have had brunch here several times and this past Sunday was not so great. The quality of the food has gone down and service was less than par. I was very disappointed."

  • "I usually order the Greek-style salmon at the Grille, because it is very tasty, but on Saturday night the black olives were the slimy sliced ones that come in a can. No excuse for this since there is a store a block away that has the good Kalamata ones at their deli bar. My friend's whitefish was good, the sides are always excellent. The front desk check in could be a little smoother and if it was my place I'd have more presentable- looking hostesses. They have improved the acoustics of the place which I appreciate since the bare floors are so echo-y."

  • "We have been to the Grille on Laurel on a number of occasions during the week and were very satisfied. However, this time we were there on a Saturday night. The restaurant on this visit was unbearably loud, which was compounded by live music playing in the bar. Conversation was not possible without yelling. My lamb chops were fine, however, my wife's entrée was not hot enough. Our server did the stylish thing, and memorized the four orders without writing anything down. He forgot the salads and came back to the table twice to straighten things out. Eventually he got it right."

  • "The skirt steak was chewy and fatty, the trout was dry and Caesar salad needed anchovies not tomatoes with a stronger dressing the tomato bisque soup was good"

  • "Go here 3-4 times/year. Expansive menu. Good, consistent good. Challenge occurs when it is cold out, as the cold air blows through the seating area every time the door opens. We were able to move from the center of the room to the side after a few blasts of cold air. Live music on Fri nights (maybe others) add a nice ambiance."

  • "Pictures and reviews were good, but our family experience not so great. We tried a new restaurant for husband's birthday, but quite disappointing for price paid. Person that seated us, had some body odor. Waiter kind of rushed us and didn't even tell us if there were any specials. It was a slow, Sunday night, but felt like we were inconveniencing them. Floor was sticky, table had a sticky food spot that we had to ask to be cleaned and menus had food on them. The grouper was not terrible, but soggy. It was getting great reviews, but it wasn't that great. Wished we would've gone to Wild Fire for amount we spent on a family of five."

  • "The brunch was a very standard brunch. If you want a Sunday all you can eat experience... this will do. The food was standard, good but not great. The sweets in particular were uninspired. The bread pudding was dense and cold. The service both at the table and behind the brunch bar was inattentive. The ambiance is nice."

  • "Took my staff here for a celebratory lunch. It was perfect! Plenty of selections and everyone greatly enjoyed their food. The service was excellent. It's always a nice touch when the manager checks in with the table. He also thanked us on the way out. The experience was solid for all aspects of restaurant dining. Well done! We will be back!"

  • "I usually don't write reviews about personal dining experiences, but because Opentable encourages doing so, and after reading a few of the reviews of The Grille, feel compelled to give my opinion. This restaurant always serves well prepared, tasty food at fair prices. The staff is always friendly, management and ownership present, with everyone eager to make your dining experience pleasant and fun. One can only assume that a reviewer who claims that nothing ordered was tasty, well executed or presented, and is so clearly determined to dis and diminish a very popular, well run Lake Forest restaurant has another motive in doing so! Honest diners will see that this is a popular, busy spot for very good reason."

  • "Dined here Saturday night between the holidays. The food was mediocre. Blackened tuna lacked spice, the lentil soup was tasteless and gloppy, the trout was overcooked. Presentations were worthy of a high school cafeteria. Our waiter didn't serve the meal, so the server didn't know who to serve. It was, however, quiet.....the restaurant was almost empty on a Saturday night....but I no longer wonder why."

  • "Went with a group of 8 to celebrate a birthday. Staff was fairly accommodating; took good care of the kids in our group, etc. My in-laws called from out-of-state to pre-order dessert for all of us (they wanted to have a cake delivered but management nixed that). Staff handled this sort of special request very well. But the food was really only OK as in an it's-only-been-a-week-and-I-honestly-can't-remember-what-I-ate-there sort of way. Still, it's a good option for families, especially with younger kids. A nice alternative to the Lantern or Chiefs in Lake Forest, but I'm not sure I'd travel from much farther away than say Highland Park for food of this level."

  • "We went for dinner with friends visiting from out of town, and our guests loved everything about our choice, and evening. We all tried the seafood special which was outstanding, flavorful and delicate. Our server recommended splitting two of the desserts for four, and he was right, the bread pudding was truly amazing, as was the chocolate mousse. Our server was attentive and personable and the entire experience so pleasant, we decided to make a reservation for Christmas Eve dinner instead of cooking at home."

  • "Enjoyed the sunday brunch at the Grille on Laurel. They had a good variety of quality food and it was a good value for the dollar. The atmosphere was cozy and the staff was very attentive. Mimosas and bloody marys were a perfect accompaniment for a sunday brunch."

  • "We really enjoy this restaurant every time we come. The menu is timeless, the food consistent, well prepared and unusually good. I tried the ribs for the first time Saturday night, and was blown away. The service is always efficient and friendly and the atmosphere lively and warm. The Grille is a slice of heaven if you like honest, good food, well prepared and served with a smile!"

  • "Great service, great food with a wonderful atmosphere. We appreciate the friendly service and the special attention we were given. Whenever we are in Lake Forest visiting our student at Lake Forest College we enjoy spending an evening at The Grille on Laurel!"

  • "The hostess tried to give us a table near door, but it was obviously drafty as we stood next to it. Basically, no table should be there at all. Hostess told us if we did not take that table we would have to wait 30 minutes or so for a different one. (We did have reservations and did show up on time.) We ended up sitting in the bar area, which was good enough if you don't mind a huge TV right in front of you. Menu is 1990's standard. No new innovation since Brie. Ribs were delicious, among the best I have ever had. Waitress very nice and competent. Everything else is blah."

  • "I will go back but my husband will not. I have been here before and the people we were with have been many times. Our waiter was very "casual" for a better word. He forgot the soup and salad. The drinks were weak and the place was so cold that my food got cold before I could finish it."

  • "I went with my husband and 7 year old daughter. We decided to sit by the bar because of the beautiful fireplace and comfy chairs. It was a perfect meal and there was something for everyone. They even have gluten free which is often a struggle for me. I would go back again."

  • "My car and I are GPS-challenged. Because of this, it was difficult finding the non-main street called Laurel in the dead of the night. When we called in for directions, staff was understanding and helpful. As a result of our driving issues, we had very little time to eat before we had to leave to make a theatre curtain. Explaining this to the reception desk peeps, they assigned a great waitress (Katie, I think) who they knew had the right energy to get us served and released quickly."
