Diner Reviews
  • "What a disappointment. Plans for a romantic dinner were dampened by a tableful of loudly cackling ladies, along with mediocre food and service. The maitre'd, hostess, and waiters appeared to be no older or experienced than the Georgetown students who frequent this place with their mums and dads. Wife's scallops were ok, but my bone-in rib-eye would have been more appropriate for a Polynesian luau - surprisingly odd flavorings. Cheerful, but overall inattentive service, except for the champagne cart presentation, of course, with it's ridiculously overpriced selections. A spectacular setting, but unfortunately unspectacular in all else -- hasn't got the maturity yet. "

  • "The Capella Hotel's new property on the Georgetown canal brings another world class dining option to DC. Valet parking and the most efficient and pleasant staff make it easy to get into the dining room. The Swedish chef Jakob Esko who is Swiss trained is quite a charming talent Capella brought from their fabulous Singapore property to make sure this hotel started out with the right kitchen expertise. He came to our table and enthusiastically walked us through the menu. We settled on a creamy clam soup, a peach salad that was delicious, fish, and suckling pig. All followed by a tray of baked chocolate treats. All was delicious? Wine list and menu although not huge, have something for everyone. Price reasonable for this class of service."

  • "This place has the absolute best food however it is over priced as expected reading previous reviews. Definitely a awesome place for a special occasion, staff is very accommodating and attentive. Love them!"

  • "People at our table ordered from steak to fish to soup/salad and everyone was quite pleased. I personally had the steak and would not change anything. They seemed to cook to temperature. The service was impeccable which help make the evening more enjoyable. Visit here - not too overly priced for DC."

  • "Celebrated a birthday with a friend at this beautiful restaurant in an intimate Georgetown hotel. Tomato Soup, Corn Chowder, Salmon, Lemon Meringue Tart-all delicious and plated perfectly.. Service was fine, but not exceptional. Very quiet-just a handful of tables. The place is really beautiful-very sophisticated and comfortable room. Terrific view of the canal-should be a great place in the warmer months. Discounted valet parking was $11. At a similar location, the Four Seasons down the street, parking is complimentary when in for lunch or dinner."

  • "I love this hotel and restaurant..the service was excellent...the only problem was how small the portions were for the price....at first, I thought perhaps it was a tapas restaurant...but then when the server said you could share you meal, I was stunned how small the portion sizes were...they don't have to be huge by any means, but an entrée should have more than 2 or 3 bites to it..other than that, the space is gorgeous and the people lovely."

  • "Everything about the Grill is notable. Great food, great service, wonderful ambiance (great lighting, really quiet). If you are looking for a really special night this the place to go. Two of us had fish (Trout and salmon) - excellent. Another had pork and the third beef - - no complaints from anyone and we are pretty picky. Go, you will not regret it."

  • "I have to give 4 stars to a resturant that serves bone marrow with the bread...Just a really good dining experiance for me. I enjoyed the crab cake and I had one of the bone in steaks. A very good meal...you must have the baked alaska for a sweet ending to your meal. Quatlity resturant."

  • "Superb. We tried just after it opened in April. It is now fully mature and the menu is innovative and original. Yum."

  • "Nice ambience and service but way overpriced. Can't imagine I'll be going back."

  • "From start to finish, no appetizer, no dessert, one bottle of wine - three hours. And, at that it took several attempts to get someone's attention to get a check so we could leave. Been here three times; the level of service has deteriorated considerably with each visit. As good as the food is, and it is good, it does not (and cannot) compensate for the extremely slow service."

  • "Exquisite food, scrumptious and perfectly sized dessserts! Will be back."

  • "I went there for brunch and the restaurant is pretty, stylish, well decorated and I was expecting the food to be at the same level, but it was a huge dissapointment. Plates are extremely small, and the food has nothing special. Cocktails are completely overpriced, and the food is ridiculously expensive for what it is. Not coming back. I totally don't mind spending on food, but in this case it's not worth it."

  • "The Grill Room was the perfect dinner for my birthday. The drinks are outstanding made at The Rye Bar, and the food was phenomenal. Not sure if it was due to Restaurant week, but for being considered a steak house, I did think there were very few choices for steak itself, only two in fact at the time of our visit. But none the less, everything we ate was absolutely delicious and superb. We will return for another big occasion celebration."

  • "A poor showing. Arrived to a 2/3 empty dining room and asked to be seated at the table to wait for my guests. It took 15 minutes for them to lay a setting for 3 at one of the empty tables. Champagne trolley was tacky and not necessary. Food was good but not memorable. The wine list was either New World or predictable French. Someone needs to take this restaurant out of the early 1990s as it should be better. The architect did a good if predictable job with the windows and the bones of the room but the swirly upholstery and lighting fixtures give it that Ukrainian airport lounge feel. The dining room at the Mark hotel in NY is modern American hotel dining done right. The Grill was amateur hour."

  • "Fit for foodies. I live in Georgetown. This is one Of my favorite places in Washington. It's great for a special occasion but it's also great just to splurge on yourself on a random night. The grillroom is perfect for a birthday dinner for 10 and even more perfect for a romantic dinner for two. I took my parents here and they loved it. The bar outside of the restaurant is plush and comfortable. The steaks are perfect and the sides are delicious. The cured salmon which is not always on the menu is fabulous. The baked Alaska is excellent. Who knew baked Alaska could be so good? Service is excellent. All my waiters have been excellent. I have now been to this restaurant 8 times and it never fails"

  • "My husband and I enjoyed dinner during restaurant week. Very classy. Salmon appetizer and lentil soup delicious. Tough to say which was better the baked trout or maple duck breast. Desserts--baked Alaska and Apple Tartine both perfect! Ryan was a charming, polite server. Great wine list. Recommend this restaurant any time of the year."

  • "This restaurant was supposed to be top 10 DC but does not deserve that position. The food is ok, but not great related to price. Service is uninterested, trying to push expensive champaigns and not very attentive to pour the expensive wine we ordered. Our remark about the saltiness of the food (too much) was taken, but nothing done with. Allover an expensive disappointment."

  • "Our family dined at The Grill Room on Christmas Eve and were very pleased. The Maître d’ accommodated our table request and the overall ambiance was upscale, as expected. The entrees (sole, salmon, scallops and strip loin) were perfectly cooked and delicious. Additional sides, such as mashed potatoes were individual, not family sized, which seemed small. Deserts were excellent. Service was very good, though drink service was noticeably slow. When the bill arrived one of the entrees was exactly $10 higher than indicated on the menu. When the waiter was informed, he casually checked and revised the bill. No shock - no apologies from the manager. In this day of computer-generated tabs, how does this happen and how long has it been wrong?"

  • "I highly recommend The Grill Room for any occasion. The service was impeccible and the food devine. We plan to return soon and visit in the summer so we may be seated on the patio overlooking the canel. Thank you for making our Christmas special."

  • "Table side beef tartare a nice treat. Rest of the food good but expected a little more based on the advertised 40 day dry aged rib eye. Service was good but again expected more for the price."

  • "Terrible service, ok food. This restaurant pretends to be first rate for foodies. Service mediocre. It would not last one month in New York or San Francisco. Had to ask for water and for refills, had remind waiters I asked for wine, in appealing dessert list and, worst of all, very pretentious attitude of waiters. Diners at next table sent food back. Waste of my money and time."

  • "We had a perfect dinner at this restaurant. The tuna carpaccio was just indescribable - by far the best I ever had, also the scallops. The service was excellent. We will definitely come back to this restaurant whenever we are in Washington."

  • "went to the grill room recently for my 5th wedding anniversary - one of the more outstanding dining experiences i've had in quite some time - service was excellent, food was outstanding, excellent knowledge about their wine list all combined into a relatively small dining room made for a fantastic evening - go early and have a drink at the adjoining Rye Bar where people watching was also top notch - i'll be shocked if you're not required to book a month out once the word about this place starts to really spread around town...i know i'll be back -"

  • "Very good, we had no complaints. The only thing saving the "5" star rating was that for this price, I have had better meals. Phenomenal staff though. The chef coming out to see how the food was I also thought was a very nice touch. The food was definitely very good, but neither the appetizer, nor my or my wife's dish was something I will remember for a week."

  • "A thoroughly enjoyable 40th anniversary experience! Although we were only there for lunch, the staff treated us as if we had spent the night in one of the Capella Hotel's $595/night rooms. The waiter, Tom, was especially attentive and seemed genuinely touched by our celebration. We were seated at a table for 2 by the window overlooking the canal -- very romantic. While the food, for us, is a secondary consideration, we enjoyed the lobster salad and grilled salmon. For dessert, the executive chef rolled out a cart and introduced us to all of the items on display. Tom then proceeded to place one of each on a plate for us that had been inscribed with "Happy Anniversary" in chocolate. We can't wait for #41 at The Grill Room next year!"

  • "We stayed at the Capella Hotel 3 nites. Dined at the Grill Room for 3 breakfasts and 1 dinner. Breakfast was very good, but dinner was great, both the service and food. We will definitely return next visit to Georgetown and stay at Capella."

  • "Went for Saturday girls' brunch and it was fantastic. Tom was our server and he was very great. The food was clean and beautiful. Portions were perfect. Georgetown needs a good growth spurt re: quality dining and this is a nice start. HIGHLY recommend this gem. Some shy away from the price but totally worth it."
