Diner Reviews
  • "I always enjoy the dining experience at the Grill. The wait staff is attentive and cordial and do their best to answer any questions you have about the preparation of the food. The food is delicious and well-prepared. This is the second time I ordered the scallops and though they are beautifully cooked and wonderfully seasoned, both times I've gotten a little sand in them. The menu is pricey, but the quality of the food is very good and I suppose part of that expense is for the service and ambiance. Apparently they stopped validating parking for the garage right next door; after paying for an expensive dinner, it would be nice to not then be hit by another $10 as you leave the garage."

  • "The Grill never disappoints. It is perfect for special occasions or just getting together with friends. The food and service are excellent and it's never too noisy so you can enjoy conversation."

  • "This is one of my favorite places to go when I want an exceptional meal. I have been here several times and the food and service has always been above average and great...If anyone asked me the best place to go to in SanJose and bay area.."

  • "Service, food and convenience to the SJ Rep were outstanding. The service was especially personal as the manager remembered a funny incident during our last visit and treated us to a complimentary souffle. First class operation."

  • "I have to say that their steak was prepared perfectly, and was delicious to the last bite. The scotch selection wasn't the largest I'd ever seen, but it was decent, and what they did have was great. Most importantly, I'd like to thank Jessie M. and Kyle D. Those two really made the experience one to remember. When everything is said and done, I would HIGHLY recommend The Grill on the Alley. I personally will be stopping by every time business brings me to San Jose."

  • "It was our first time to The Grill and everything about it was excellent. The restaurant itself had an old time feeling to it with the high ceilings and the way it was furnished. The steaks were perfect and the service was great. It's not cheap but it would certainly be perfect for that special mean for a special occasion."

  • "the Grill is a pricey steakhouse with a dark conservative atmosphere. The quality of the food is very good, steaks are juicy, but it is overprized. The dark atmosphere did not appeal to me."
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "Service was the best part of the meal. Staff is most accommodating. Steak knives are dull and management needs to invest in a good sharpening tool or buy new steak knives."

  • "I was in town and wanted to great downtown restaurant and Open Table did not disappoint. The Grill on the Alley was the perfect choice. The steaks were excellent and we enjoyed eating outside and enjoying the view."

  • "The Grill on the Alley is located inside a major hotel but acts as if it is a stand-alone site. Everything is excellent, especially the service. They just started a new menu that includes some old favorites but increased portion sizes. Be careful ordering side dishes. The portions are, for the most part, table sized."

  • "We enjoyed our dinner. My filet mignon was fabulous."

  • "I was a little disappointed this time. I won't say anything bad about this place because I come here once a week sometimes twice. Maybe they were just having an off day."

  • "I reallty liike the feel of The Grill as it reminds me of a New York or Chicago steak house. However, I think their service is a little slow and the food is just above average and does not match-up to the price point. With that, it is a good business lunch place as it is quiet and comfortable."

  • "we were there for girls night out. our group had both steak and sea food both were excellent. staff was attentive. a little high priced but we enjoyed the experience."

  • "Friendly and attentive service without being overbearing. Highlights were perfectly medium rare butter-soft filet, roasted brussels sprouts, mashed potatoes with fresh spinach folded in (wow!) and perfectly chilled and beautifully presented shrimp cocktail (actually a LARGE prawn cocktail). All this topped off by a delicious warm brownie topped with vanilla ice cream and drizzled with caramel and hot fudge. Everything was delicious."

  • "Pleasant atmosphere, but seated near a 12top and an 8top which this evening limited our conversation, as we both have a hearing loss. Our NY steak was hot and cooked perfectly, as always. Souffle dessert was light as air and a lovely end to a perfect meal. We visit The Grill whenever we are in town."

  • "I hosted 6 business guests from Russia last Friday and we were all very pleased with our complete meal experience. 5 of the 7 of us ordered various types of beef, one ordered the lamb chops and one ordered fish. Our appetizers were great, the service was outstanding and I can heartily recommend it to all."

  • "We had the Sunday night prime rib dinner- HUGE portions, absolutely delicious! Melted in your mouth and we will defineatly be back for the wonderful steaks."

  • "One of the best filet mignons ever! The service was wonderful. Our waiter was nicely personable and also very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about their menu. The wine list is extensive but QUITE pricey. Don't get me wrong, I love spending $100+ on a bottle but it's nice to have more options in the $40-$60 range so one doesn't feel like they're searching for the cheapest thing on there. Some day I'll spring for one with the 4 figure price tag! We will definitely back to this great restaurant… with a days pay gladly in hand. Steak lover? …Make a reservation now!"

  • "Other than the nice chandeliers the ambience has a "Men's Club" feel with dark wood booths and floors. The high ceiling does reduce the noise level. The service was excellent and the steaks very tender and prepared as requested. Both of their well Merlots were good choices. Our steaks came with a choice of starch but no vegetables. Add a side of vegetables, dinner salad and a glass of wine- add tax and tip it will be north of a hundred dollars. If a basic steak, potatoes, and veggie dinner is worth that to you this is a good place to start."

  • "Overall me and my husband had a great time plus it was our first time there and it was also our anniversary. The Valentines Day Menu was pretty pricy $160 per couple, and then there was higher prices for a rose, half bottle of champagne, and small chocolate truffles. We chose the cheapest $160 and our waiter was Zeek? I think that's how u spell it. Anyways he was very pleasant and awesome! He never let us wait too long for anything. And that night was super crazy busy and he did his job very well. He mentioned Happy Anniversary to us so that was a plus to me. After dinner we were fully satisfied. Overall I enjoyed our time there and the food was delish, it was a great first time experience. I would definitely go back again."

  • "This was truly an enjoyable dining experience. The food was exceptionally well prepared and equally as important...the service staff is very well trained. The servers are knowledgeable about the menu items. I appreciated that they were courteous and unobtrusive...just the right amount of attention with no interrupted conversations."

  • "The Grill consistently delivers a total dining experience. The epitome of attentive yet not intrusive service, detailed presentation of food and wine alike, and a wonderful ambience o start an evening at the theatre. We have been numerous times, will continue to have it as our go-to dining venue. Recommend highly ( and the bartenders are a terrific lot too!)"

  • "Take the light rail, go at 6, and be prepared to eat very quickly. Husband loves the rib-eye and yes he ate all 20 ounces. I had the Sea Bass on the special...amazing. We shared a caesar and a piece of their key-lime pie made on site,,Yum!"

  • "They use two persons to be a team for serving. The first one did not have a cue as to what makes great service in a fine restaurant while his partner who took over to serve the food was over the top GOOD. The worst part is that the team splits the tip. I would never go back if I had the first person for the entire evening."

  • "The food and dining room service was very good as always. The issues were with our cocktails in the bar and being seated by the hostess. We rarely send anything back, but our cocktails were not at all as we asked them to be, even when they were supposedly made again. I had made reservations two weeks in advanced and advised them that we were celebrating my husband's birthday. We were taken to a small table under bright lights. The restaurant was only half full. I requested to move and after several minutes we were moved to a more comfortable booth. Not the usual attention to detail we are accustom to at the Grill. No mention of a "Happy Birthday"."

  • "We were not expecting the warm , elegant feeling we had from the minute we arrived. My husband and I sat down and had a cocktail and the salami cheese board (yummy) while waiting for my daughter. She arrived starving. Our waitress was super, she told us if we were comfortable we could stay where we were in the cozy warm bar and have dinner. I was delighted , we were happy and the idea was Perfect! The best Chicken Pot pie ever. Kobe Burgers Awesome! I made a trip to the ladies room and peeked in at the dining room. Beautiful! We will be coming back soon,"

  • "Lobster bisque was perfect! Filet expertly cooked and wonderful tasting! Amazing by the glass wine choices that won't disappoint. Brownie pie was scrumptious! I can't recall the last time the Grill disappointed us. We love this place!"

  • "We had a delicious meal here but the service was sub-par...especially for the prices. One of our meals was ordered with the peppers/onions on the side...it came on top. We ordered the plain mashed potatoes, they served the garlic/spinach mashed. Our waters were never refilled and we requested more bread with our meal which was never delivered. At between $30-$65 for an entree, you would think they would get more right. The food was great though!"

  • "Thought I would enjoy a good dinner alone while traveling to San Jose area. Service was slow. Wine served 20 minutes after order and a very short pour. bread came after salad. Steak was very good, but not worth the prices."

  • "Love this place, the service, food and of course the music they play in here is wonderful. The meat quality is EXCELLENT! Dry aged beef for 28 days! The seafood is sent fresh daily! This place is where it's at! Why did it take so long to discover? Been here three times in the new year and it's only the 20th!!!!!!"

  • "I've dined here numerous times for lunch and dinner.. Love this place to pieces! Chris the manager never fails to make your experience enjoyable :) The wine list is the best one in town, and the food is always as delicious as it looks... Yes, this is what Fine Dining is all about!"

  • "I love the Daily Grill in Palm Desert and realized this is the same company and really the same menu. The pot pie is fabulous, the bread is standard sour dough, but ample and so good. This is my favorite Cobb salad in the world. Pricy, but worth it."

  • "My family and I treated ourselves to Christmas Eve dinner at The Grill. The steak is THE best around. And this comes from some serious steak lovers. Their wine list is also fabulous. Any occasion is a great occasion for dining at The Grill!"
