- Relaxing Lunch VenueOpenTable Diner Since 2010Dined on 11/18/2014I wanted to take my friend to a special restaurant for her 85th birthday and decided that the Grill on the Alley at the Fairmont Hotel was the finest in town. The ambience is always elegant yet comfortable with pleasant music to set the mood. The staff are friendly, helpful and attentive. Needless to say, the food was out of this world, especially the complementary birthday dessert. I had booked online with a notation that I would have the birthday girl with me, and all was taken care of very discreetly. Prices are a tad high, but you definitely get what you pay for. I would love to return to the Grill for my birthday! KKSpecial Features:I would recommend this to a friend.
- Good food, but not for the priceBDCalDined on 11/14/2014The food was good, although for the price, it should have been superb. My bone-in filet (at $60+) was so tender as to have no texture. I ordered it rare+, it was medium rare+, but we were going to a show so I didn't have time to send it back. My son's NY strip, however, was ~$42 and excellent. Perhaps what set the wrong tone for me was the waiter. Every recommendation he gave was for the most expensive choice. I noticed it after the second recommendation, but it was so obvious after four recommendations that my other son (a fourteen year old) noticed it too.
- Almost perfectBiscuitVIPDined on 10/24/2014Food was great. Service was great. The only issue was that our companions told the hostess that it was our 1st anniversary and they did not acknowledge it. It upset our friendsSpecial Features:
- Pot pie!Nickname1Dined on 10/18/2014The reason we chose this restaurant was because my BF had their chicken pot pie some years ago. It's now only on the lunch menu but our waitress worked it for dinner. It's HUGE and we have a great picture of the two of them...man and his pie!Special Features:I would recommend this to a friend.
- OpenTable Diner Since 2014Dined on 10/18/2014As usual everything , the ambiance, service and food, was excellent. However, the Bernaise sauce was not up to par; you should go back to old receipe.Special Features:
- OpenTable Diner Since 2008VIPDined on 10/5/2014service was awful food not much better. Drinks arrived an hour after ordered in a near empty restaurant. Souflee ordered way in advance got lost in the kitchen. Some of the food was overcooked. Manager did cut us a break on the check, but we were never credited with our Opentable points. I love the Grill in Beverly Hills, and the one in Chicago is OK, but stay away from San Jose. Just awful
- Birthday dinnerNMJohnDined on 9/28/2014Came to the area to celebrate my birthday and see our daughter in college. The service was wonderful, not intrusive but available. The sides were much more generous Than I expected, and we would have ordered one less for our table of four. Will definitely be back! A great value for the price.Special Features:I would recommend this to a friend.
- Needs ImprovementOpenTable Diner Since 2007Dined on 9/20/2014Don't dine here often but it isn't always what you'd expect from a upscale, expensive restaurant. Most disappointing was the souffle we ordered ahead of time, it tasted like and had the consistency of scrambled eggs, couldn't even finish it. The creamed spinach was cold, steak was medium instead of medium well. The Moscow Mule tasted like lime juice, no taste of ginger beer whatsoever.Special Features:I would recommend this to a friend.
- Romance at 'The Grill on The Alley'paloaltomom1Dined on 9/13/2014Romantic evening out on a Saturday night with my husband began at 'The Grill On The Alley'. We arrived at 6p.m. & they offered us the best table in the house. The restaurant offers outside dining & bar service as well. The dressy back dining room was quickly filled up with couples & groups of four celebrating other special occasions. They also had private rooms for business meetings & large parties. The food was fabulous although pricey. And, we had 2 waiters although one would have sufficed. Portions are large & service is a bit slow. So plan on spending the evening enjoying your meal & not rushing off to a comedy club like we did. BTW...Order their in-house, homemade Key Lime Pie with whipped Cream & Raspberry Sauce. You won't be sorry.Special Features:I would recommend this to a friend.
- Fabulous we loved the mac & cheeseRaviU2Dined on 9/13/2014My sister and I came to San Jose for our birthday weekend & we had the best dining experience at the Grill On The Alley. Thank you for the birthday surprise at the end of our amazing dinner! We had the best time and they made sure we were out before our show started.Special Features:I would recommend this to a friend.
- FishyDined on 9/10/2014Service was very slow and the Crab Cakes were fishy didn't seem freshSpecial Features:
- beenthereVIPDined on 9/7/2014Whenever I visit San Jose I always make sure to dine at Grill in the Alley. The service & food are consistently great! We look forward to our next visit.Special Features:I would recommend this to a friend.
- Overpriced and under deliveredStevecmc87VIPDined on 9/6/2014Even though we alerted them to our need to get to a show (and the waiter even asked) service was slow. We had to rush eating, and we did not have an opportunity to get coffee or dessert, as we had to catch a curtain. In addition, our chicken dish was over cooked, while my scallops had some grit. The plates were not very well composed. And, they did not supply a serving utensil for our shared side dish. We went to this restaurant based on a friend's recommendation. Maybe we caught them on a bad day... It certainly did not look slammed to me.Special Features:
- ChristineDined on 9/6/2014Very pricey steakhouse, but it was a nice experience. Probably would only go back for a special occasion.Special Features:
- Excellent dinnerSJDinerDined on 9/4/2014Went with a group of friends to celebrate a special occasion and was so pleased that the Grill exceeded all my expectations, especially with the service. We were having a grand time and our waiter was as patient, pleasant, and attentive as could be. I love that he always had a smile for us and did everything he could to serve us without disrupting our meal. All the food was spot on: excellent flavors, perfectly prepared and cooked to our preferences (cowboy ribeye, NY steak, crabcakes, salmon). Fruit cobbler and key lime pie were excellent and huge! Be ready to share. The prices are no joke, but the food, service, and ambiance are worth splurging for, especially if you want to make those special occasions a little extra special.Special Features:I would recommend this to a friend.
- Great Service Good FoodbyranVIPDined on 9/1/2014The food was very good, the Service was great, the waiter was good, his assistant provided excellent service.

- Great Food, ExpensiveJeremyVIPDined on 8/29/2014Be aware that they charge triple retail on their wines, where most only charge around double. So you are going to pay over $100 for something at the store at around $35, so you are better off bringing you own and paying a corkage fee. Food, while expensive, was really good this time. The last time we were there I had bad fish, and have no clue how at $40+ a plate you can deliver fish that stinks so bad you can smell it 10 feet away. This time, filets only and no seafood, perfect. The Wedge Salad was really good, better than any wedge I've had. Creamed Spinach was bland and lacked flavor, no wonder it was "included for free" with a plate. The Mac and Cheese was the bomb!Special Features:I would recommend this to a friend.
- Still great.TerrbearDined on 8/28/2014Our last visit was a comedy of errors, but this time The Grill was up to its normal greatness. Our servers were excellent, and they, and the kitchen, accommodated our kids's varied and sometimes unusual requests - Loaded Mac n Cheese, hold the load; half sprite/half lemonade, etc. The food, as usual, was excellent, lobster moist and tender, steak perfectly rare, tuna ahi seared nicely (all sauces and toppings on the side, please, asked our daughter - and she's right...who would spoil the perfection of ahi?). The Grill is one of our favourite pre-CPA dining choices - not crowded (except for the bar), good food, usually great service.Special Features:I would recommend this to a friend.
- not good for value!GeoffVIPDined on 8/27/2014Have been to the bar and returned for a pre-theater dinner - looked online and wanted the happy hour deals. Were seated in the restaurant where the cheapest meal was a over $20 salad. Asked for the burger menu from the bar and ended up with a $22 kobe beef burger - very dry and not a lot of flavor - better burger at Carl's Jr! Told the waiter we had to be out the door by 7:00, giving us an hour to order and eat. Our food consisted of a wedge salad, my burger, a second burger, and a salad special. There were two other tables when we ordered. Food arrive at 6:42pm! We ate quickly, and then had to ASK FOR THE $112 CHECK AT 7:05p. Got it back to sign the CC at 7:12p. Needless to say we had to rush to the theater. Not happy!Special Features:
- Always Exceptionalcrzy8tsVIPDined on 8/15/2014We had a large group (8) and we requested and receive a table in the Wine Room. It made the evening perfect. Food and service were exceptional; thanks again JT.Special Features:
- Quiet in chaoswhanafiDined on 8/9/2014Ended up at this restaurant as I was staying at the Fairmont. Was travelling on business, and did not know the San Jose Jazz Festival was on at the same time. Hotel was overwhelmed, with a 20-30 minute wait for car retrieval from the garage. All of which is to say it was busy. The staff did no seem able to cope. I was seated, then ignored for 15 minutes while I tried to flag a waiter. The manager finally noticed and brought me a menu. The food itself was good, though expensive.I would recommend this to a friend.
- A very fine dining experienceJandDined on 8/7/20146 of us were seated in a private dining room. We were thrilled. Excellent dining experience with delicious dishes. Two served us and we always had attention We will returnSpecial Features:

- Special DiningWillDined on 7/27/2014The service and food were very good. I had the New York and my wife the filet. They were both cooked to perfection. The entire meal was very good. Our waiter did an outstanding job and had a great personality. Enjoyed the entire evening.Special Features:I would recommend this to a friend.

- Too expensive!DissapointeddinerDined on 7/19/2014We went here to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Beautiful restaurant, and the server was very personable, however the food was expensive and disappointing. Tuna tartar appetizer seemed premade and ran out of wonton chips. My lamb chops were quite good, but my husband's filet mignon was very dry and a bit overdone. All vegetables are extra. We wanted mashed potatoes to accompany our meal. Menu choices were limited to lobster or spinach mashed potatoes, neither of which sounded great with our entrees but the server suggested the lobster potatoes so we decided to try it. Unfortunately, we only took a few bites as they were very salty and the lobster taste was overwhelming. We ended up spending $180 for our meal which didn't seem worth it.Special Features:
- Bring Your Own Bottle of WinePriorRestauranteurDined on 7/17/2014The food was great. The wine list is very expansive, but VERY expensive. The restaurant does have a corkage fee of $25.00. I brought our own bottle of wine with us. The bottle I brought would have cost me over $300, closer to $400 on the wine list, if it was listed. Still a nice restaurant to go to for that special occasion or romantic evening. Just be prepared to spend alot if you want a bottle of wine.Special Features:
- SubstandardSnakestarDined on 7/14/2014The restaurant was very pricey for the quality of the food I experienced. I had the Chilean Sea Bass as did three others at my table of 6 and all three were undercooked, in fact, 2 of the 3 of us suffered stomach issues as a result. In fairness, the other 3 had steak and were quit happy with the order with the exception of the price.Special Features:
- Why bother?RettsDined on 6/24/2014A lot of hype for very little. Unless you are a big spender -lots of drinks and high priced items on the menu- you will get less than satisfactory service. Indifferent comes to mind. We wanted the Prix Fix menu and had to ask for it. It was obvious the waiter wasn't too please. Why then advertise it? There are so many people running back and forth, but it seems to be the height of inefficiency. We will definitely not go back. There are so many better restaurants with good service, good food and better prices. Why spend so much and come away regretting it? We even had to remind them that we were entitled to dessert!!Special Features:
- Birthday CelebrationniniDined on 6/17/2014We had a lovely evening of delicious food and fine service. I would have liked a bit of olive oil and a little more goat cheese on my heirloom tomato salad. It was delicious but could have been better. The crusty bread, tapenade and oil and vinegar dip were outstanding. Our steaks were cooked perfectly. All in all it was a lovely evening.Special Features:
- So dissapointedDissapointedDinerDined on 6/15/2014I've been going to The Grill on the Alley for about 15 years. This last visit found me completely dissastified with the menu changes and the ambiance changes. The feeling is now that you are being nickle and dimed to death. The food wasn't as tasty anymore as there are a lot of changes to the menu (more in how they prepare the meal than food choices). It seems like the Grill is cheapening out. Very dissapointing
- diner6Dined on 5/31/2014Nice restaurant and great service but I would not go back because the food was far below expectations.
- not a good nightTerrbearDined on 5/29/2014We love The Grill, but this time was a disaster. Our drinks did not arrive until after the appetizer, the kids drinks being even later. Clean-up was sporadic, taking our kid's crackers unfinished, & left dirty dishes. We mentioned our 7:30 tickets 2x, yet our 2nd drinks came after the meal was over. They forgot to run our credit card, leaving me to sign the "hotel version" - with no personal receipt, but worried of being late to our show, came home to a voicemail message. I talked to manager Marco, who was very responsive, friendly, understanding of our issues. Again, we have had many wonderful dinners here, and will definitely try again. But they HAVE to prioritize the restaurant drink orders, when you're paying their prices for dinner.Special Features:I would recommend this to a friend.
- A Great Excuse to Go to the SJCCScotchAndSteakSavantVIPDined on 5/23/2014Downtown San Jose is a hotbed of restaurants, which comes in handy any time there's a major show at the Convention Center. Given this abundance of choice, it says something that I always make a point of going to The Grill on the Alley -- a steakhouse that does its job superbly. Their glass wine program is tailored to finding your next new favorite, their kitchen is situated so you can watch your steak being broiled, and the staff totally want your company. Do the blue-cheese-crusted bone in filet and you won't regret it. Always phenomenal.Special Features:I would recommend this to a friend.
- Cheated on Celebratory DessertOpenTable Diner Since 2010Dined on 5/22/2014My husband and I were celebrating our 10 year anniversary here and our waiter surprised us at the end of our meal with a dessert. Since we didn't order any dessert, nor did we ask for anything for our celebration, we unfortunately assumed that the dessert was free. Once we received the bill, I noticed that there was an $8 charge for that dessert. Next time, if you're going to offer a dessert then you should give it to your customers for free, or at the very least, make them aware of the cost and let them decide whether to have it or not. Disgraceful! Very tacky. I will not come here again.Special Features:
- Excellent menuDineandwiineDined on 5/20/2014All of our food was amazing --from appetizer, salad to entrees and then desert.Special Features:I would recommend this to a friend.
- Over pricedDisappointedDined on 5/20/2014I had the lobster salad for $30 and had one piece of lobster claw that was overcooked on it. Not enough dressing and way overpriced.Special Features:
- JohnDined on 5/12/2014I love The Grill, great spot for any event. Would highly recommend it, great steaks and an extensive wine list too.Special Features:I would recommend this to a friend.
- Delicious at a pricelovethepotpieDined on 5/11/2014The food is wonderful but the prices are not for the faint of heart. Even while sharing some of the entrees and appetizer the cost soon added up A wonderful place to have a special event celebrated (save up for the celebration!). Service is slow but courteousSpecial Features:
