They do have the feel of an old fashioned bar and grill with an extensive menu that includes old favorites and a good choice of seafood, salads and meat. I had the crab cake, someone had the steak tartare, another the hamburger and 2 had salads. All were fresh and well prepared and I will certainly go back. It was great that they had the same special that included a bleu cheese crusted filet mignon with their awesome garlic spinach mashed potatoes. I am very glad that the steak was done to my liking. Wait staff attentive and knowledgeable, recommended a nice affordable wine from list. Very nice for family gathering, but not as intimate as expected from photos...we sat in a long at a table for eight. Difficult to talk to everyone, but hard to do with that size group. the crab cakes were as good as any I've had anywhere-everyone enjoyed their meal. Thought it would be a bit less$$$, with side dish included with the entree. I appreciate that they prepared a rack of lamb that wasn't on the menu - it was good - though the sauce was a little heavy - I would have preferred a simple herb crust - but I should have asked about this before I ordered - bottom line: the lamb was very good. I would definitely return if I'm in Chicago again.3/12/2013 12:00:00 AMReturn to a classic spot.This is the first time I'd been back to The Grill on the Alley since that assault incident in the men's room several months ago during the height of the pre holiday season. Everything seems the same, the service polished, the menu vast, the quality excellent. We went there for lunch and it was just a good as I remember it. I always have the same thing the Ahi Tuna wrap which is beyond generous. They wrapped up what I couldn't finish and I had enough left over for two more meals. My friend had another enormous salad that she took home with her for the most part.
