Diner Reviews
  • "Grill on the Alley is in the Westin Hotel, so you'd expect it to be overpriced, but it's not. I've found it to be a solid go-to location when I am having lunch with a client, prospect or friend on North Michigan Avenue. The menu has something for everyone and I haven't had anything that wasn't good. Service is almost invariably attentive and the restaurant is usually empty enough (their problem, not ours) that you can speak in normal tones."

  • "my husband and I were in Chicago for an Event. We were looking for a romantic quiet restaurant to enjoy ourselves. The restaurant was very nice and the food was very good, however, we had a terrible waiter. We waited 20 minutes to get our drinks, then we waited another 35 minutes for our food to arrive. We ordered an appetizer, salad, 2 main entrees ( that were exactly the same) and sides. our waiter did not tell us how large the portions were and we could have just shared what we ordered. we were not checked on during our meal to see if we needed anything else. We asked why he did not tell us the portions were for 2-3 people and he replied, " I usually do but just forgot" we spent $100.00 and were not impressed"

  • "I have to say the food was great. The soup full of flavor and the bacon on the wedge was to die for. We got drinks that were different and delicious. The strawberry mule and the cucumber gimlet. For dinner we had crab cakes and broiled white fish both great especially the shoe strings with the cakes. Now on to the service, it was less then to be desired. It was at least 10 minutes before out server came with menus so long in fact the host came back and brought them to us. He finally came took our drink order and disappeared again. The host walked by and asked if we wanted bread. Most of the meal we felt ignored for a table next to us who had 5 people and must have been ordering expensive entrees. Great food only goes so far."

  • "We had dinner twice at Grill on the Alley during our last trip to Chicago and it was really delicious both times. Friendly and attentive staff, comfortable space, and good drinks!"

  • "We were in a hurry as we had a show to catch- the service was prompt and the food was delicious!"

  • "There must be 200 restaurants within a mile of this place that offer a better price/value ratio. I realize that it's Streeterville but must every place in the area treat the locals as if they are tourists? Tellingly, on a Friday night the place was about a third full. That probably says more than anything else I could write."

  • "I'm never disappointed when I dine at The Grill. I've been several times for large group luncheons and for intimate meals. The food is exceptional, the wait staff is very attentive and the service is all around superb. Great place for a romantic evening or a get together with good friends."

  • "The Grill is wonderful. Talented chef, great servers, delightful manager. Food is superb. Professional in every way. For a special event, book the wine room for a tasting dinner. Lots of great private rooms, too. Highly recommended."

  • "Great location to meet a friend--huge portions of comforting foods, moderate prices and consistently good service. Conveniently located in the Westin Michigan Ave, Hertz rental is down the corridor, Bloomingdales and other great shopping is across the street. What's not to like?"

  • "of all the restaurants in Chicago, all prices and quality-this one had good food, good service, but the prices were utterly outrageous. I could not believe them!"

  • "We have been going to The Grill on the Alley for 15+ years. Manfred was our regular waiter until he retired. The food is excellent and the service is terrific. I would recommend The Grill to anyone from business dinners to a family affair. Quiet enough to have a normal conversation at a table. The bar is a fun place to go for a drink. The Grill is a great place for anyone looking for a wonderful meal."

  • "This was our first time to eat at this restaurant in Chicago. We enjoyed it very much and the food and service were outstanding. However, we did have a problem locating the restaurant as the sign outside said only The Grill, not The Grill on the Ally. There also could be better signs directing to the restrooms, which are located more into the hotel and not part of the restaurant."

  • "Great food! Ate there for my son's sixth birthday. They treated him like a king!"

  • "I visited for a mid-morning Friday breakfast, looking for some relaxation, good eggs Benedict and a mimosa. If you like overly-mustardy sauce with a bite, the eggs Benedict is for you; it wasn't for me. I couldn't get a mimosa, as they don't serve alcohol. I ate less than half my meal. And then I went elsewhere."

  • "My wife & I dined here before seeing a play at the Broadway playhouse. We made a reservation for 4:00 p.m. without knowing the main dining room opens at 5: 00 p.m. Because of the early reservation we were seated in the bar which was quite noisy and did not have much ambience. Despite the energetic environment we enjoyed the food which was very good and the great service provided by our waiter. We recommend this restaurant but if you desire a romantic environment with some ambience do not dine in their bar area."

  • "My niece raved about this restaurant. I have now. Joined the chorus. The food was great; but special accolades go to the staff."

  • "We were staying in the hotel (The Westin) and it was freezing outside so we decided to stay and try the hotel restaurant. It was really nice and the food was great! I had a very nice birthday dinner and drinks! They also have a bar thats separate from the dining area and its usually always busy so you know the place is good!"

  • "First time at this restaurant. Try the lobster bisque, it was perfect. Also tried the double cut pork chops and chicken parm, no complaints! Nice ambiance and outstanding wait staff."

  • "Loved the seasonal menu and the pork chop was amazing! Service was great and the server was knowledgeable and fast. Noise volume was nice so you can hear each other."

  • "Quality of food not good for taste and presentation. Wine good. Price is very high especially if compared with the quality of the food. It was and remains a second choice restaurant"
    Dined on 12/4/2013
  • "I give this restaurant a good on all counts. But, the food is way overpriced for what they serve."
    Dined on 11/25/2013
  • "The food was good as mentioned by the other reviewers. My husband and I ordered off the special Thanksgiving menu which had the pork chop and scallops - both quite superb. Granted it was a busy night, I wouldn't say it was packed, but the service was quite slow. There was a substantial wait between our appetizers and main course - but what can we do. Contrary to reviews on sites such as y*lp, the restaurant is kid-friendly and has its own kid's menu. My daughter ate an appetizer plate and the lobster bisque soup - the rest she ate from our plates but there was plenty of food."

  • "Great food and service. Very friendly atmosphere and a lot of privacy while eating. Great place for any occasion."

  • "I had a Bone in Ribeye and Split pea soup. They were beyond description in presentation and taste. My wife had salmon, and it too was top notch. The ambient is classy in a dim great room with fine leather booths, and white tablecloths. The service is not exceptional. Nice, but not well groomed or well kept, with a less than cheery disposition. The bread and butter should be provided liberally considering the $250 price tag (two couples no wine but with desert)."

  • "The service is amazing. This is a fine dining restaurant where you get your money's worth. The food is great, the portions are great and the hosts are very attentive! The ambiance is fitting for a romantic night or just a nice dinner. The bar area in the front of the restaurant is also great! Love this restaurant!"

  • "My wife and I enjoyed the grill on the alley. The food is excellent and at a reasonable price point for the location. Much more enjoyable than the rush street steak houses."

  • "This restaurant, located in the Westin Hotel just off Michigan Ave., is a lovely dining experience. The food was very good, service very good and reasonably priced for being located in downtown Chicago. Welcoming, upscale atmosphere in dining area as well as the bar."

  • "One of our favorite go-to places for a quiet, comfortable dinner with friends. The food is excellent. Their staff is knowledgable, experienced, and friendly.. Best of all, it is conversation friendly. I would highly recommend this lovely restaurant."

  • "Over the years the hotel that surrounds the Grill on the Alley may have changed and morphed, but the restaurant remains dependable for good food and service. It is a fine spot for a any meal as you pass thru the Gold Coast, shop or just go there for an excellent experience."

  • "My wife and I really enjoyed our excursion for downtown dining at The Grill on the Alley. Generally, I shy away from hotel restaurants, because their level of dining does NOT justify their prices. However, I was more than pleased with the food and the service we received. We ordered filet mignon and Chilean sea bass. Both entrees were delightful. They have an excellent wine selection; we had a white wine and red wine along with cocktails. The chef created an appetizer for us to sample the sea gallops. Overall, it was just great food and service. By the way, you CAN bring your kids if you want to, but why bother; they don't appreciate fine dining!"

  • "Great menu with wide range of delicious food with varied price range and generous potions, both for lunch and for dinner. This is our destination for a quick or a leisurely meal, either with a significant other or friends.where you can hear others speak. Really good food!!"

  • "Found this place on Open Table with a random search while visiting Chicago. The food was great. Our waitress was very nice. I was surprised this place was not busier. We will definitely be recommending for our family and friends. We had such a good time that we went back the very next night. I had the Double-cut Blackberry Pork Chop. We also ordered the Pan Seared Scallop entree as an appetizer. Both were very good. Went back the very next night and had an awesome Key Lime Pie for dessert. I highly recommend!!!!!"

  • "with reasonable prices. For a steakhouse located just off the corner of the miracle mile, this is a real gem. We have a wonderful evening. The bar is a great place to start the evening to wind down and then move into the beautifully decorated dinning room that helps you forget just how busy your day might have been."
