Diner Reviews
  • "I had been wanting to try the Brazilian dish feijoada for some time, so on a recent occasion, I took my sisters out to dinner here. The place did not disappoint -- great meals, drinks, and desserts. Would definitely recommend!"

  • "It took one hour to get our food and the appetizers came with the main meal--even when I specifically requested that this not happen. Service seemed chaotic and nonEnglish speaking staff made issues more challenging. Food is good. Having eaten here several times before, this time I brought family and friends from out of town. They were appropriately unimpressed. Sorry to say that I no longer view this as a neighborhood gem."

  • "The good was way overpriced. Appetizers were 10 each and we were served no more more than half a cup of food was served. The beer was warm and the service was too slow."

  • "I made a reservation during a World Cup match when Brazil is playing, so my students could experience the Brazilian food and culture. Everything was good. I was just disappointed with the size, amount, cup presentation and price of the caipirinhas drink :-( It was served in tiny plastic cup (my boyfriend's even broke when he hold his cup), lots of ice and not much beverage :-( for basically 9.00 dollars....:-("

  • "We met to provide an appreciation dinner for one of our teachers. Considering our limited budget, we opted to order food "tapas style" with 1 large salad and one entree, and 4 appetizers - for 4 people. Our server was extremely friendly and accommodating. I have been to establishments where servers give patrons a hard time for ordering appetizers only. This was not the case here. Our group reservation had also changed from 8 to 4, which I mentioned upon arrival -not a problem. The food was great, I would recommend the Brazilian paella, the black bean coxhina, in particular. This was our second year hosting our "teacher appreciation" dinner here; and we had the same great experience last year as well."

  • "Bon de mais means super good in Portuguese. I've been eating at the Grill for over 20 years. The owner, Elce, was a chef in Brasil and recreates the authentic Brazilian dining experience. His mexilhões a carioca, Carioca Mussels with a green sauce I have never had anywhere else are a reason to keep going back. The carne picahna is my favorite entree. You cannot go wrong by starting out with a traditional Caipirinha, the national drink of brasil, and some mandioca frita, otherwise known as yuca."

  • "Cozy, welcoming little place. Extensive menu of Brazilian specialties. Great food. Most excellent caipirinhas. Staff mostly Brazilians. Indoor and outdoor tables. It feels like a neighborhood restaurant somewhere in Brazil. But it's actually in Adams-Morgan a 10 minute stroll from the Woodley Park Metro station. Bacana mesma."

  • "I have been coming to The Grill From Ipanema for over 20 years and have always had consistent excellent Brazilian food. I began courting my wife there when I was single and this started her love affair with Brazil. I recently planned to meet friends there for a special evening. Although my friends didn't make it the staff was willing to accommodate me despite the "no show". The food was delicious and the staff, especially Edward, were attentive and professional. I can't wait to go back."

  • "We chose this local restaurant for the first time en route to the Gala Theatre. Great find. Lovely welcome from one of the family owners. Tried an excellent Brazilian cocktail in their happy hour and then opted for the caldeirana with sea food. Lovely food and great friendly and efficient staff. The restaurant is now on our list - and we will return"

  • "The muqueca bahiana was tasty. It just did not taste like muqueca bahiana is supposed to taste. And the caipirinhas were small and weak. Both had been better in the past."

  • "We arrived on time and our hostess/waitress seated us right away. We sat outside for a long, long time waiting for water. Our waitress, who was really animated, took our drink and appetizer order quickly. The wine came and the apps came quickly too. But then, we waited, and waited for our entree. I had ordered my meat cooked medium - and it was more like well done. Great flavor of all of the food, though. Would have been so much better if the service was faster. "

  • "We had a really nice meal with my visiting parents, and were happy with just about all of it. Friendly, welcoming service, nice atmosphere, great menu, fair prices, good valet parking. Only quibble is the meat quality: two of us had various preparations of rump steak, and one of us got a steak that was extremely tough and chewy. Everyone else was very happy with their food. The prices are reasonable and we do not expect five start meat quality, but the second rump steak was really inferior quality and detracted significantly from the meal. I hope they can do a better job of meat selection in future as otherwise this is really a great place going into its third decade in the neighborhood."

  • "Great food, great atmosphere, overall A+ I will definitely be going back!! If you're looking to try something new or just looking for change from the typical american cuisine, you should start here!! It's definitely different in terms of how food is prepared/served, but still meets the american standard for those questioning if the food is too different. Service was spectacular and my friends and I had such a good time!"

  • "My husband and I went to the Grill from Ipanema on our vacation to the D.C. area. We loved this restaurant! The food was delicious and authentic, and the service was fantastic. Our waitstaff were very helpful and explained the different Brazilian cuisines to us. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal! The appetizers were delicious -- we especially enjoyed the croquettes. Also, you can't go wrong with the authentic Brazilian cocktails - the caipirinha was a real treat! Highly recommend this restaurant if you are looking for a nice evening and a delicious and authentic meal!"

  • "I visited this restaurant with a party of 10 for my birthday dinner. It was easy to find; parking on our own was difficult so the $10 valet was perfect (note: the valet parks cars in special areas along the street, not in a lot). We were greeted and seated immediately, and my later guests were brought to our table as they arrived. Service was prompt and friendly; the servers made us feel at ease about pronouncing the names of our dishes, which was a feat for people unfamiliar with Brazilian cuisine. My food (Coxinha De Galinha & Churrasco Misto) was ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS ...although the beef was a little undercooked for my liking. The drinks were great too but small. Def would eat here again but for a special occasion as it is a bit pricey."

  • "Cachaca cocktails are great! Mopeca (sp?) tomato, fish dish was the best! They let us turn our table so that we could see the band. The band members greeted the audience on their break. Romantic, kid-friendly, it felt like home. Thank you!"

  • "First of all, the meats are fantastic! There are over 10 different types of meat to try and 80 percent are exquisite! The meat melts in your mouth. No gristle. My favorites are the cheese steak, tri-tip, filet mignon, & parmesan pork' The others were very good. The only one that was okay to me was the sausage. Second, the salad bar is fantastic! Even my vegetarian friend loved it! My two favorites were ratatouille and caprese salads. The fresh fruits were incredible. For dessert, I loved the cinnamon pineapple from the grill. The atmosphere is wonderful. It overlooks the Puget Sound. Great place to go. The meal can initially seem pricey; however, it's well worth the money for all the great food I ate! Highly recommended!"

  • "This is one of the best restaurants I've ever been to. Took my date there on Valentine's Day 2014. None of the servers spoke very good English it seemed like, but that's not that big of a deal - gave it a more authentic feel I guess. But the steak, while not a massive, traditional steakhouse slab of meat, was some of the best tasting steak I've ever had, and the amount was still enough to fill me up. The sides were also extremely good, and filling. All in all it was just amazing."

  • "I had a terrible experience here with my girlfriend over valentines day (which is coincidentally BOTH of our birthdays, so this was a big deal). Started off with us ordering food and the waitress unable to fully explain the foods to us. I then ordered the steak and my girlfriend the chicken on the price fixe menu for valentines day, and I told the waitress we do not eat pork, so no bacon. She then said 'its only a little bit of bacon' and I said we do not eat pork, so no bacon. She was very hesitant and then said i'll see if I can get you white rice. So then we wait, and wait, and wait, the food finally comes out and I get white rice... and my girlfriend gets bacon. Long story short, bad service, mediocre food, would not visit again."

  • "Took my girl here for VDay, even thought I set an reservation for some reason it did not appear on the list. However, the Host was able to still sit us easily. My girl order the extra spicy chicken dish, the chicken was so tender. I forget what kind of steak I had, it ws ok but overall this was a very nice and romantic restaruant"

  • "Had Valentine’s Day Dinner. Our group of 4 ordered from the special VDay combo menu for the occasion that had appetizer, dinner, and dessert options ($39.95 / per). I wasn’t completely happy with my selection and neither was my wife. Had potato soup which was a puree and highly garlicy. I ordered my steak medium and it came rare, my wife had the customary Brazilian dish and she didn't really like the flavors. Upon leaving we notice more interesting looking dishes ordered by others that were not on the special menu. The waitress gave us an extra glass of wine and after letting her know we said we would drink it - on bill. It was a college age crowd with a blend of ethnic backgrounds. Parking was by valet. Not my favorite, but not worst."

  • "I took a group (9 people) to dinner at The Grill. We had a good time. The service was great and our server was able to provide separate checks. The food was really good. Last time we enjoyed the Sunday Brunch (also good). This time we did dinner and was spot on. We'll return in the future. :)"

  • "I had plenty of Brazilian food in my trips to Brazil but I have to confess that eating at the Grill was nothing like I have tasted before. We came with a big group and everyone was satisfied. Service was good and friendly. They have traditional dishes like “moqueca de peixe” and chicken croquettes that is delicious (way tasty than what I had while in Brazil). I think I am in love with their capirinhas cocktails…. It is so refreshing. I am definitely coming back!"

  • "I normally come to Adams Morgan for the bars but now restaurants will surely be added to the list because of this Brazilian restaurant - The Grill from Impanema. The restaurant is very easy to get only a few blocks from 18th st and Columbia Rd NW. When you walk in your greeted by a smiling host or hostess who is probably from Brazil. The staff is very nice and are really good with answering questions about items on the menu. The only Brazilian food I've had is at the Brazilian steakhouses, this was a great opportunity to try different Brazilian fare. The seafood dishes were absolutely delicious and I can wait to go back again."

  • "Authentic brazilian food although better examples of the appetizers can be found elsewhere. The cuts of meat vary in quality from average to excellent. A solid alternatives to the churrascarias. My wife is from São Paulo and enjoys coming here."

  • "Loved the food, drinks, atmosphere...but the service was bad. Drinks and refills took forever, and I think at times forgotten. The busboy was rather unpleasant. The server forgot to submit one of our guest's entrees to the kitchen, so she sat without food for several minutes while the rest of us had been served. The server was kind enough to split up the checks (which is the only reason for two stars instead if one) but all but one check was wrong. Not sure if I would give this one another try..."

  • "There aren't many places in the area that do non-rodizio Brazilian food, and Grill from Ipanema provided genuine cuisine and a nice caipirinha. Our server was great and accommodating, and we had a good time. Would definitely return!"

  • "We went during restaurant week and it was quite delightful. Experienced new dishes, wine, perfect ambience. It was amazing and perfect for a quite night. My partner and I decided to do a date night during the week and it was well worth it - the overall atmosphere was friendly and comfortable while still feeling upscale."

  • "Went there with a group of friends for restaurant week. After reading several mixed reviews, wasn't sure what to expect...but hoped for the best. The biggest disappointment was the service. When the appetizer course came out, they only brought out food for 3 of the 8 guests. The remaining appetizers didn't arrive to at least 15 mins later, and the server didn't offer any kind of explanation of why this happened. And when she gave one guest the wrong appetizer, she wanted to argue with us instead of accepting that she messed up. The main entree's came out without issue, and were pretty decent, but not spectacular. Lastly, when it was time to pay the bill, we had to ask other servers to locate ours. She was sitting at the bar. WOW!"
