Diner Reviews
  • "This is in the heart of newport, RI. It is very nicely decorated and with a lovely view of the harbor and bridge. You can catch a sunset. We had a nice special last night of vacation there. We brought our 8 year old daughter. There were other kids but as the night drew on it became more of an adult scene; dates and people out for drinks. The food was good a little pricey but good. Staff was kind but busy. Pros the view and decor, feels special. Cons everything is a la carte making it more pricey but portions were good. I was disappointed with fries: for $7 seemed like we got frozen fries with some garlic and rosemary on top---expected something a little snazzier. Gelato was yummy. Enjoy."

  • "bad start as there was a $10 fee for valet parking. This not even done in the best restaurants in Providence. Apps of Oysters and King Crab were fine. for my entree, I ordered Whole Dover Sole from the menu. Both the waiter and manager both informed me that it could not be served whole, only as a fillet. Strange, so I opted for the Shrimp entree, only fair. My date,s entree of Rack of lamb consisted of 4 chops about a quarter inch thick. It would have been laughable, except for the $44 price tag. poor food at ridiculous prices avoid"

  • "We had two bloody Mary's, a Belgian waffle, and the steak and lobster Benedict. The steak was tough and the eggs were cooked all the way through with very little Bernais sauce. The waffle was ok."

  • "Great experience. Service was particularly notable in that it was prompt and pleasant. Would certainly return and recommend to others. Also, we were seated by the windows toward the back - what a great view, even in the winter."

  • "The setting on the harbor is beautiful, but this restaurant relies on great food, great service, and stunning design to create a dining experience that almost makes you forget the setting... 41 North would be a winner in any city."

  • "I first ate here last year; my husband & I each had the best meal we've ever had & couldn't wait to return. I returned with my friend & was so excited to bring her here! We started with oysters & specifically asked for smaller ones. I have never seen oysters so huge. Our first course was duck confit rissotto and a sauteed octopus dish. The risotto was OK, nothing special, the octopus itself was tasty, but was soaked in vinegar. Our main courses were braised short ribs and snapper. The ribs were tender but tasteless, the snapper was fishy tasting and again soaked in vinegar. We could not finish anything we were served. Dessert was good, but frozen in the middle. Were charged full price & were the only diners there, should have been a sign."

  • "It is restaurant week in newport so we decided to give it a try, even though we heard mixed reviews about The Grill. The atmosphere is very nice and the view is killer. The service was very good but overall not on par for level they want to be on. The food was fine but the dishes were under seasoned. The pumpkin cheesecake dessert was good but the chocolate cake (they took a big liberty in calling it a cake) was poor. But the thing that left a bad taste in my mouth was the $4.50 cup of coffee So I spent $9 on 2 small cups of coffee. At that price you better check if I want my coffee warmed up, but not once. Last time. They must realize it, it's restaurant week and the dining room was just 50% full."

  • "We continue to go to 41North despite uneven service and food because when they do it right, it's great. This time, we parked at the far end of the parking lot and as usual, the valet came running up demanding $5. REALLY?? Are you so hard up for money from people why are dining in your restaurant? In November? Then the dining room got busy and our waitress seemed to disappear and committed what I consider a cardinal sin - I paid for dinner, but she clearly didn't check the name on the credit card and returned it to my husband. The food? 90% excellent, with so-so pork tenderloin. They also need to get real with their wine list- more wines by the glass and more reasonably priced wines (under $50)"

  • "We dined here on a Sunday night during Restaurant Week. Great menu for an obviously great price! The portions were perfect and the food was delicious, as was our choice of wine. We would absolutely go back. Well done!"

  • "Although getting seated took a while as our dinner was the last night of Restaurant Week and the place was busy, it was well worth the wait. The specials were great and the chef also made a vegetarian dish for one person in the party, since there was no vegetarian item on the menu. Lots of wine made this not a bargain but a very enjoyable dinner. We also had a great view of where our day started - the Pell Bridge and a 4.2 mile run."

  • "Spectacular! We got to go for restaurant week, and got one of the best meals I have had in years. The tuna tartar, the fillet, and the scallops were all unforgettable. This place is fit for Top Chef fans, as Tom would even be impressed with these dishes. The down side is that we would not have been able to afford such an amazing meal if it was not restaurant week. During the rest of the year, you only get what you pay for."

  • "The food was wonderful and our waiter very personable. He listened to our comments and took appropriate action. The decor was lovely. My only negative was the noise level. The restaurant was partially full yet it was difficult to hold a normal conversation. Our party will definitely return."

  • "-first time at this restaurant-elegant place, creative and delicious restaurant wk menu-food as appealing visually as taste wise. -went early, few people there, service attentive, friendly but not intrusive -on the expensive side for me for the regular menu but saw some items I would go back to try-wines by the glass very limited and expensive on the menu but several specials offered at more reasonable prices. Could not beat the view-at the end of a pier, looking out on the water/harbor-imagine outdoor seating in summer very enjoyable"

  • "Very smart restaurant in a really good location in Newport Food and service was great but the wine list left us struggling to find much choice at a reasonable price. Another group from our hotel also went to their bar for a drink and found the same inflated prices."

  • "Music was to loud the volume didn't fit the room.Didn't ask if we wanted coffee with dessert seemed they wanted the table, thought it odd."

  • "4 of us went for restaurant week. We shared 2 of the scallop appetizers, 1 tuna tartare and 1 pumpkin ravioli with goat cheese and beets. Everything melted in your mouth! Everyone liked the scallops the best, but I thought they were all equally delicious. For dinner we ordered 2 of the pork tenderloins and 2 of the artic char. Both were great. Both the chocolate cake and pumpkin cheesecake were delicious My only complaint was that there was no side served with the tenderloin (just a couple of brussels sprout leaves). Had I paid regular price, I would have felt ripped off. I'm not sure if they downsized the size of the plates for restaurant week. But, the food was really spectacular and the service was great. Bring your hearing aids"

  • "The food is always innovative and wonderful. I had the petite filet, perfectly cooked and tender. Both the location on Newport Harbor and decor are spectacular. The only issue we had was with our server who forgot to bring the drink menu, then bread, then brought someone else's entrées to our table. Possibly he was new and certainly he was apologetic but it did detract from the experience."

  • "Our first dinner at Forty 1 North was delicious. We were very impressed with selection diversity and quality especially during Restaurant Week. Our out of state guests were impressed and look forward to returning. The restaurant definitely had an energetic volume level that made conversation difficult at times. The staff were efficient and the timing was very good."

  • "We choose Grill at Forty 1 North after reading an amazing menu on Open Table. When we arrived a young woman greeted us and verbally directed us to the dining room but did not show us. Since we did not know the way, we asked a waiter who offered to seat us upstairs (bar area) instead. After sitting, no one returned for a bit. When the waiter arrived and noticed we had no menus (which he should have given us at seating), he said "that is unfortunate" and walked away again. He returned with menus but left for awhile. A woman who was clearly a manager noticed and took our drink order. We asked about the other menu but was told there wasn't one. It's a beautiful setting but food was disappointing, especially given the menu link on open table."

  • "Unfortunately (for the restaurant), it wasn't a busy Saturday. We relied on the waiter's wine suggestion. I didn't recognize the name, but I remembered the label -- we enjoyed it the night before, (but we paid about 30% more here than the night before (how often do you check the wine list after ordering?!)). I had the tuna, medium, my wife had the lamb, medium well, and my son had swordfish, rare. Appetizers were good and we enjoyed the wine while we waited for entrees. And waited. And waited. Finally they arrived, lamb was rare, swordfish was dry, tuna was good. When we complained about the lamb, it came back broiled, so it was now charred and rare. My son didn't remember what came with his fish "because I ordered it so long ago.""
