Diner Reviews
  • "My son and I had lunch on the porch on a beautiful August afternoon. I made a note on OpenTable when I made the reservation that we wanted to sit outside and that we needed a gluten free menu. They took us outside and brought us a gluten free menu without having to ask. That was impressive! The ambiance was quiet and calm the food was great but the service was a bit slow but friendly.I would definitely come back for a summer lunch and in the winter for a dinner inside.I do recommend."

  • "We dined on a quiet Wednesday evening, lovely weather but my companions preferred inside. The Grant House had a singer and guitar player on the deck outside (which was very nice); we were seated inside but in the corner nearest them, so the restaurant music competed with the outdoor music. The menu has a lot of promise and good selections for my four-year old. I had the watermelon and tomato salad, the tomatoes were a bit mushy but good overall flavor. The shrimp was good but the ravioli was slightly underdone. My husband's chicken was excellent, my daughter's sliders were almost inedible due to overcooking. Chocolate cake and peach cobbler were both fantastic. Service was quite slow and we had to flag our server down for drink refills."

  • "Garden Room or Patio is a perfect setting for a nice day. Main dining room is dark, but ok for dinner. Three of us got quiche which was good but not extraordinary. It came with small green salad and fruit. Fruit was just watermelon-still on rind and 2 stems of grapes. With all of the good fruit in season, thought it could have been a bit more varied. Other in our party got a chicken sandwich which he said was good. Two in our party ordered a dessert to split and even tho they were across from each other, she did not bring a second plate-just an extra fork. Not a big deal but would have been easier for sharing. However waitress was pleasant and the ambience here is great for visiting and enjoying the gardens."

  • "Can't say enough about this awesome restaurant. Quiet with a wonderful ambiance, beautiful view. We sat on the veranda and felt like we were the only diners there, which was not the case. The food was outstanding. Because of travel for work, I eat out 6-7 times per week. This is absolutely one of my favorite restaurants of all times. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "but the neatest part is the ambience. Bring your wine vocabulary to impress your date, because there's quite a selection. In fact, the wine selection far out-numbers the food menu. A quiet walk in the open grassy park across the street added to our experience - weather was favorable and the sun was setting. Upstairs is basically the same as downstairs, but with a members-only label. It does get used. The staff was nice enough to let us take a peek. Because weather was so nice, most all guests chose to eat outdoors and we were alone inside. What a nice experience."

  • "My book group loves coming to the Grant House for happy hour. I have also come with other friends and had a very good time. However, i came with my card group last Friday, and it was my idea to come to The Grant House, and we had wonderful food. However, the service was really bad especially when the waiter said "you're going to have a wait to get a refill of coffee". The ladies asking for a refill never did get their coffee. What was interesting was two men sitting at the next table remarked to us, as we were leaving, "If we were you ladies, we wouldn't return to this restaurant with the way you were treated." Now I have reservations for next Thursday for a friend having a birthday, but I am thinking of changing restaurants."

  • " We, a party of 4 were not impressed with our meals... my sister was in restaurant business 34+ years and ordered Risotto ... not great. I had been a waiter in a high-end restaurant in Los Angeles and my roasted chicken sandwich on focaccia bread was good, but my small vegetable soup was just passable. My wife ordered White Shrimp and Raviola, and all of us were NOT impressed when the server brought it out ... BIG PLATE, with very tiny servings of ravioli and vegetables ... the kind of thing we all mention on internet. My Brother-in-law got the we will go elsewhere for lunch next time."

  • "I enjoy going to see Doug Smith, grammy award winning guitarist. Usually he plays in their tiny bar, but this time the weather was perfect so he played on their wide front porch. Lovely time. They used to have happy hour til 6pm but they changed it to 5 apparently so I wasn't prepared to pay so much. For my 5 leaves of butter lettuce with candied pork belly pieces and vinaigrette (tasty), my bowl of soup (just okay, and no bread or anything served with) and my bread pudding (yummy but like a carmel roll)), and just water to drink, plus tip (not including the tip for Doug) and tax the bill was about $25. Definitely don't go if you're in a hurry...but if you want a relaxed evening with decent food in a charming atmosphere, it's a good choice."

  • "This was a delightful luncheon experience. The service and the server was friendly, prompt and attentive to our needs. The food was perfectly prepared. We sat on the porch and mused that Grant and his friends may have sat in the same spot on a hot summer day."

  • "The Grant House is such a gem, the setting, the service and the food. Well, maybe not the food. The food is average or below average for the Portland area. I few problems noted: poor or lack of seasoning, quiche was day-old and warmed up, fruit lacked any imagination, the fruit crisp was warmed rhubarb sauce with uncooked oatmeal sprinkled on top (really??) why would a chef serve that? Does the Grant House have a chef or just a cook who warms things up. Where is Gordon Ramsey when you need him?"

  • "This historic site was ideal for afternoon tea outside in the gardens. This special event included a guest speaker and all the guests wore hats. Great fun! Because the Grant House is located near an airfield, planes did fly over head and the noise was evident. However, it didn't take away from the ambiance....since we all knew the airport was nearby. The 3 course high tea was generous. I suggest that the servers, in the future, fill the tea cups completely so the guests, if they desire, can add a whole sugar cube. The garden atmosphere was absolutely lovely as were the tables. We were seated with two other guests and had a great time getting acquainted. Guests were sent home with a small favor bag filled with treats....how thoughtful!"

  • "Food a cut above casual dining. Service was excellent without intrusive hovering. And prices lower than I'd expected."

  • "Always love going to the Grant House because of the location. Service is always great and most times the food has been better than average. Did not feel that way this time. The steak was not cooked to order, the bean risotto was a bit overkill, the bread was really stale and the seasoning lacking. However on the plus side, the salads and desserts were very good."

  • "Four of us came here based on TA reviews. Grant House lived up to expectations. We ate outdoors, next to garden area...so nice we lingered a while after our meal. Everyone got different entrees, which were all excellent. Particular raves on the huge pork chop! Highly recommend. Though it's fine dining, casual attire is fine."

  • "We always bring our visitors to The Grant House. They all enjoyed the food, service and music. We should have arrived earlier to enjoy the guitarist that evening. We think ending the music at 8 was too earlier, maybe 8.30."

  • "The weather was perfect, garden was beautiful, food was delicious. Very relaxing!"

  • "Lovely building, landscaping, ambiance. Food very average, service somewhat dull. We were 3 women at our table, and noticed that the waitress was much more attentive to tables with men. I had ordered tea, their teapot leaked all over the table, I asked for a towel and was treated rudely. I'd possibly go again just for the history, but prefer better food and service."

  • "This is a beautiful setting and the service was great. Pork chop and ravioli dinners were good...not outstanding for the price. Desserts were a real disappointment; the carrot cake was a carrot cupcake cut in half with frosting, fruit crumble just okay. We were there for an early dinner on Thursday evening. The music and bar seemed to be where customers were...the setting goes a long way, but I hope the dishes prove a bit more interesting if we choose to try it again."

  • "This was a delayed anniversary celebration. The food was EXCELLENT (as it has been when we've been there in the past). Interesting dishes, well prepared. I had the smoked chicken with couscous for dinner. Fabulous. And the bread pudding for dessert was to die for. We'll go back again soon, even without a special occasion. I like that the dining areas are fairly small--just 4-5 tables per room, so that the noise level is very low and we could easily hear each other. We ate on the sun porch and watched the sun, then rain, then sun (this is Vancouver, after all)."

  • "I came early for dinner before some Nerium meetings and loved the history of the house and surrounding buildings. It was so beautiful and quaint. The food I got was delicious."

  • "My first trip to Grant House was this past Thursday because of the live music playing that night. The food was a bit on the spendy side for Vancouver but the fish was fabulous! A real treat! The music was played on the porch and the weather was beautiful so overall the setting was about as good as it could ever be. I really commend them for bringing an artist the caliber of Tom May to sing too. He made the evening a memorable one."

  • "We had a wonder 50th anniversary celebration on June 14th at the Grant House. They allowed our children to decorate with personal touches and bring in a cake from an outside bakery. The wait staff graciously cut and served the cake. The wait staff was outstanding very pleasant and very attentive to all our needs. The food was good but steaks were under cooked for med well. The sliders on the children's menu had too much sauce actually ketchup on the side would have been a better choice. Prices were a little on the high side at that price I would have thought the main course selections would have included soup or salad."

  • "We love this restaurant as a date night, though we have been there for lunch. The food is great, we love the desserts, it is always quiet enough to really feel like you can really have a good conversation, and when the weather is nice, you can sit outdoors and enjoy the view. The staff is always friendly and attentive, but not too much."

  • "Staff friendly and helpful but a touch short out on the porch at times between 5:30 and 7:30 pm. Wine list good but prices over-inflated---especially by the glass for local wines. The by-the-bottle mark up for commonly found wines was 3 times the market price---a bit too much. Appetizers delicious. Dessert portion scant considering the $8 fee---very "skinny" slice of chocolate cake. Espresso and coffee were luke warm---would have been much more enjoyable IF the beverages were hot."

  • "The spinach dip and chocolate truffle cake were good. The fish & chips and chicken salad sandwich were bland. The place is charming. Prices are reasonable. The waitress was energetic. She didn't know much about the Grant House, but she brought us a sheet that explained more. We were hoping we'd found a place to bring out-of-town guests. We were disappointed with the entrees."

  • "Enjoyed the historic and romantic ambience, with a nice menu. Good selection of local wines. Have wanted to drive down here from the Tacoma area where we live to dine here for years, and finally did, over a long weekend. Worth the trip!"

  • "Just enjoyed a wonderful Mother's Day Brunch at the Grant House. I made reservations and the table was waiting for us upon arrival. The food and service was amazing. I dined with my son and brother and sister in-law who were visiting me from Wisconsin. Beautiful atmosphere and the four of us had a lovely time together. After brunch we went outside and took pictures. "

  • "Our food was good. Our drinks were poor. Whoever the bar tender is needs to taste what they serve. Maybe the bar tender was our server that night. Speaking of servers, ours was abrupt, unfriendly and seemed annoyed we were there. It was decent service but cold. For the cost of our dinner and drinks we expect better and much more friendly service. The balance between them was poor. "

  • "We had a group of 14 with the facility all to ourselves. It seems that the breakfast numbers were too erratic so they have decided to discontinue breakfast. However, they were honoring our reservation which is why we were the only diners. Everyone really liked the ambience and I heard no complaints concerning the food. Hopefully they will rethink breakfast and include it as a venue again. I think they just need to be better at advertising that breakfast is served! So for now, breakfast is no more and they will be doing occasional special occasion brunches. "
