    What a great find to stumble upon Gothic while passing through Belfast. My partner and I are both vegan - but also serious foodies. Those two things don't always we go together on the road. But Gothic was perfect. The folks in the kitchen know how to bring out the flavors in and textures in the local sustainable food that work with - every dish was an unique expression of the ingredients it contained. The relaxed but elegant atmosphere and careful service made it easy to enjoy the what each course had to offer. Yum.

    While the presentation is lovely, portions are tiny- which is fine if the flavors knock your socks off. They don't. Pricey and pretentious for what you actually get. And the issued statement presented by the waitress on how everything is made in house, and locally grown and sourced? What good restaurant around these parts doesn't do that these days? Disappointing, and even for a decade plus vegetarian and one time raw foodist, un-indulgent.

    I love vegetarian food but common items should not be treated as though they're so valuable that portions need to be tiny, which is what happens here. The $21 pasta topped with onions is about a cup big. I don't see people in Maine responding to food this "precious."

    The portion sizes are miniscule. I mean teeny. I mean, portions that wouldn't fill up a 3-year old. I had the kale salad, which was quite good. The portion size was generous -- but how much raw kale can you eat? I was looking forward to the pasta with mushrooms that I had ordered as my main course. Because they were out of the artichoke that was supposed to come with the pasta, the waitress said the chef would include more mushrooms, which was fine. Well, not only were there no "extra," mushrooms, there were hardly any at all! And, if there were 5 noodles in the entire dish I'd be surprised. I ate here last year, before they turned vegeterian and it was terrific. But now? They need to up their game.

    I had been looking forward to dining at the Gothic for the past year. I admired its menu, commitment to local food sources, and "specials" ($1.00 oysters). Little did I realize that the menu had changed very recently from the land-sea-soil theme to a complete vegetarian (well not quite vegetarian since egg is used in dishes). I still remained opened minded and excited to try the dishes. I was very disappointed. Fancy descriptions and high prices were misleading- a scoop of cheese with an abundance of bean sprouts; soft potatoes in a cream sauce; hunks of heavy mushrooms. We did enjoy the waiter, the martini, and the gin balls. To be honest, the cheeseburger we later split at Rollie's was divine.

    This was the first time we had been to the Gothic since it went completely vegetarian. The food was delicious, beautifully presented and we didn't have that heavy feeling that often comes after we eat out. It is on the expensive side but a great pick for a special occasion.
