I will definitely go back. The
food was hit or miss. Some things are fantastic like the bone marrow. Others are less than stellar like the burger with onions 5 ways which was massive and dry. I look forward to having the pig head at some time. Unfortunately Elan is not there any more since his move to New York."

Very inventive small plates, great
flavor combinations. I particularly liked the mussels dish, though I am not a mussel fan. Menu changes often, but some items frequently stay on the menu (see LA Times-Irene Verbila's favorable review of "quirky" restaurant). Entrance currently is located south of the Lobby area of the Alexandria Hotel on the corner of 5th and Broadway, but a more direct entrance is being constructed through the bar area. At 6:30 pm we did not have to wait and there weren't many other diners, so the noise level was pretty low. But I understand that is not the case later. They brought us their "famous" sticky toffee pudding cake with a dollop of pistachio ice cream and a candle for hubby's b-day. Very nice."

The scallops were amazing. Sadly,
the Tomato Fries weren't what we thought (they're potato fries with dehydrated tomato) and we ended up ordering two dishes with fries."

great food great setting beautiful
building ... too many bumbs and parking sucked I would still make the 45 minute drive to dine there again"
Dined on 1/29/2014
Had a nice DineLa dinner menu and
good cocktail selection. I would recommend to my friends."
Dined on 1/30/2014
The DIneLa menu was
wonderful...and we couldn't resist adding the bacon-wrapped matzo balls appetizer, which was unique and delicious. Friendly servers and casual atmosphere. A great pre-theater choice."
Dined on 1/29/2014
I came here for the first time for
DineLA and they had a great menu. I was very pleased with the soup, beets & burrata, lamb meatballs, and the salmon was done very well! I'll be back to try more offerings soon! Come and try it!"
Dined on 1/27/2014
The food was amazing. I would
definitely recommend it to a friend."
Dined on 1/24/2014
Went to this restaurant during
Dine LA. The food was very good, the service was a bit slow but the waiters were very friendly and apologetic. The noise level is very loud almost as bad as Bottega Louie's."
Dined on 1/24/2014
Nice hide away from long trip.
Excellent food, family style. Nice staff."
Dined on 1/8/2014
Going to the Gorbals is always a
good time and an adventure, especially since I can never remember the entrance since it's inside the hotel. Sit at the kitchen if you can! And buy the kitchen a round of beers, of course."
Dined on 1/11/2014
I've seen the show and I knew I
had to go. The food was great and then out pig head came out! It was cooked perfect with a great presentation. I always try great restaurants when I travel and The Gorbals is definitely ranked in top of my long list of places."
Dined on 1/11/2014
The gorbals never disappoints. The
food is always amazing, the bacon wrapped matzo balls and lamb meatballs with pesto risotto were highlights. The bartender is great and the service amazing. One if my friends forgot his fedora and our server, Francisco, chased us down the street to return it. That's above and beyond."
Dined on 1/3/2014
From the menu to the environment,
the Gorbals is not your typical restaurant. If you're open to something new, great food, and a chill environment, then you might like this. Plates are for sharing, and the staff brings your food out as they're ready."
Dined on 12/27/2013
My wife and I have been waiting to
try the Gorbals for a long time, but haven't managed to get there. The food was outstanding. I had the marrow plate and we all shared the broccoli and hamachi (not that it matters to you because they continually change their menu). The service was fantastic in an informal and neighborhoody way. I highly recommend if you want to splurge a bit."
Dined on 12/20/2013
One of the best restaurants in
downtown I think. The tapas style menu is diverse and fun. Also happy hour is a pretty good deal so check that out -- especially the cider bourbon house infusion."
Dined on 12/18/2013
After 3 years of living in LA, The
Gorbals is still my favorite restaurant. It was the first place I ever ate at in LA, and I have come back with my fiancé many times, as well as all of our friends, for special dates or just because. Everything is superb, the service, the ambiance, and the ever changing menu that is made up of the most exquisite food imaginable. We consider this "our place," and will come here whenever we are able."

I had been wanting to try Ilan
Hall's restaurant for quite some time, and being a NY'er made it slightly difficult. However, once a year I work in Los Angeles so I took advantage of the opportunity. Man, oh, man, was I ever glad I did. I took 2 of my LA-based friends there, (they also were Gorbals' virgins) and the three of us ate like there was no tomorrow. DEFINITELY have the bacon-wrapped matzoballs - so soft, juicy and succulent; no soup is needed and without a doubt, get those brussel sprouts. We actually ordered 3 of them. The fig jam grilled cheese sandwich also is a MUST! We LOVED it! And then I come to find out that Ilan has moved and is opening up another Gorbals here in New York - in Brooklyn, April 2014. I can't wait!"
Dined on 11/30/2013
Walked out full and liquored up
for 60 dollars for 2 of us. I would recommend trying everything on the Happy Hour menu and then getting a few drinks (EVERYTHING is half off). If you can get their around 6:00 - 7:00pm sit at the kitchen table and strike up a conversation with the chefs, it is worth it. My absolute favorite food was the chili broccoli. I actually ordered it twice in one visit."
Dined on 11/29/2013
The restaurant is hidden inside
the Alexandria Hotel. Once we found our way in, we realized its charm. This place was perfect for our Friday night date. Our server was very attentive and full of suggestions. We had the brussel sprouts, fries, and bone marrow. Everything was delicious. I will definitely be back!"
Dined on 11/22/2013
They messed up our reservation
(along with many others it seemed), and told us that it would be about an hour before we could sit and that even then the kitchen would be slow because they were overbooked. The hostess blamed it on Open Table, which may or may not have been true. But instead of acting gracefully and kindly (or perhaps offering us free drinks while we wait!)... the hostess told us that we could leave and come back. I almost thought she was joking so I asked 'where should we go' to which she responded 'I don't know'. We left immediately and went to nearby Baco Mercat (which was fantastic!). Frankly, there are so many great restaurants in LA, Gorbals does not seem to be worth the attitude or wait."
Dined on 11/16/2013
The Gorbals is an excellent place
to to try a variety of food. We had the poutine, duck latkes, motzah balls and beef tongue as savory bites and the toffee pudding. Everything was delicious and offered new takes on maybe some familiar foods. The poutine was amazing. The fries are thriced-cooked and were super crispy. The beef tongue was my favorite part. It was like a really good roast with a little different mouth-feel. The dessert was very good. We were lucky enough to get both ice cream option — banana and basil. Overall, the restaurant is a cool place with great food. The service is ok, but I wish they would change plates w/o asking. Also, the pacing of plates coming out is a touch quick."
Dined on 10/26/2013
Fantastic food with surprising
combinations like bacon-wrapped motzah balls and banh mi poutine. However, the duck latkes was probably my favorite dish. Not a lot of healthy options on the menu, but--in the moment--one hardly cares. The small plates are great for sharing & trying several things. Great cocktail, beer & wine options too. The building has a lot of character and the atmosphere is kind of dark & moody--appropriate for downtown. Not pretentious; just good food. Can't wait to go back!"
Dined on 10/13/2013
This is a great place for foodies
-- but only for scruffy foodies, not snooty foodies. Great list of whiskys and tasty small plates, all in a cool space with a hip but knowing staff. Reminds me of the East Village/Lower East Side in New York before Bloomberg turned it into Disneyland for the rich. Easy to get to via Pershing Square Red Line stop too."
Dined on 10/5/2013
Almost got into a knife fight over
the last of the broccoli and brussel sprouts. Saw an article in the LA Weekly that mentioned this place so I decided to finally check it out. I knew it would be good, but I had NO IDEA. We booked a table for 2 at 6:00pm, right when they opened and the service was excellent. The waiter was attentive and very friendly. He mentioned that all drinks are 1/2 off during happy hour so we ordered a few rounds. The "It's Bourbon, Honey" was fantastic, as was the Molly Mule. I can't wait to go back and try a few more items!"

This place offered an exotic yet
simple entrée. Chic and simple atmosphere. Amazing and heart felt music and great dancing!!! I loved it!!!!"
Dined on 9/27/2013
Food was great. Ambience was
divine. It server was very accodimidating. Bacon wrapped matzho balls were plenty tasty. The lamb dish was sooo delicious and tender. Bahn Mi Poutine was definitely different. I'm coming back to get the marrow. They ran out of it by the time we arrived, bummer."
Dined on 9/1/2013
The staff & food here is amazing.
We went late friday night (11:15pm) and were seated at the kitchen (which we love!). There as a band playing & everyone was dancing.. it was very lively!"
Dined on 8/23/2013
If I was given a block of salt and
told these are bold flavors. This was the saltiest restaurant food I ever ate. You couldn't taste anything but the overwhelming presence of salt."
Dined on 8/17/2013
Even if it's a meal of new and
unfamiliar dishes everything is still delicious. Only problem I came across was getting too full to keep working down the menu. An excuse to go again I guess. If you choose to go here be open to trying new things and stepping out of your regular food comfort zone and you'll be satisfied."

Located inside Hotel Alexandria
built in 1906, Chef Ilan Hall really crated a unique space for Gorbals. We sat at the chefs table and we were able to see Chef Ilan's talent come alive. He was funny, welcoming, and you can see he is passionate about his dishes. He plated each dish with love. We ordered the Pig Head. What a treat! It was delicious. Beware that it may be too fatty for some, but the flavors were out of this world. It's quiet the experience! The bacon wrapped matzoh balls were a delight. For dessert? The Sticky toffee pudding with ice cream was out of this world! Must try. A real treat to seat in front of chef Ilan. His food gets an A++ in my book! Service was exeptional! Gorbals has a great vibe."

Interesting and eclectic hidden
gem inside an old hotel. A bit sketchy at first, but then you get the charm. The food is very interesting and flavorful with lovely presentation. Another fun option at this restaurant is the $20 all you can drink for 2 hours deal. They served a nice red wine and there were a few beer choices. We would have liked more refills, but the restaurant was really busy doe to dine la week. I will return to this place and recommend it highly."

The restaurant was part of Dine LA
and the menu had most of the things we had wanted to try. Their persian cucumber dish is very tasty in a simple, subtle way. I tried a bite of the watermelon dish which was infused with pepper, I enjoyed the contrast. The bahn mi poutine tasted great, but the gravy became a bit watery. (Still ate every last bite). My husband had the bison short rib, which was a piece of glazed, tender goodness. We also ordered the bacon-wrapped matzoh balls, which were super-light clouds enrobed in pork. Yum. The latkes are so-so, the apple sauce accompaniment was extremely smoky. The dessert was a sticky toffee pudding, and a bacon ice cream. Loved it. We will definitely be returning."

Walking into the Alexandria Hotel
is like stepping back in time. Then you see the doors to The Gorbals and you're not quite sure what lies behind them - its like stepping into a 1930's speakeasy. Love the look and feel of the place. Order food for the table to share - Confit of beef tongue, banh mi poutine, charred mango are all delicious. Bacon wrapped matzo balls sound interesting but just kind of miss. Thursday night is a must (especially on artwalk night) as the California Feetwarmers start playing at 10 pm. They are so good - their brand of '30s jazz is awesome. Then all of a sudden, kids in their 20's get up and dance between the tables - the Charleston, the jitterbug - they can really dance! I guarantee you'll have a great time!"
Dined on 7/12/2013
Third time here. We didn't know it
was Dine Out LA when we booked here so the menu was limited and the portion sizes semed smaller than on previous visits. Liked the calamari and the watermelon appetizers. Short rib entree, note rib not ribs, was outstanding. Long wait for desert but that was due to the place being packed. Would return but not during Dine Out week."
Dined on 7/21/2013
I ate here for Dine LA. It was the
first time I'd been to Gorbals and it was a great experience. As a Top Chef fan, I had some high expectations and they were all met. The service was amazing from the moment we walked in the door. The food was some of the most delicious dishes I've never tried. Never thought I'd be recommending Bison Short Rib to anybody but everyone should try it. I will definitely be going back to try the rest of the menu."
Dined on 7/20/2013
Gorbals was recommended by a
friend, so we decided to take our chances. It was the best decision ever! The dining area is a little odd and it's a little loud, but still so worth it. We happened to go during Dine LA so we were able to try a lot of foods off the menu...everything was to die for. So many favors! We will definitely be going back...short ribs and poutine fries here I come!"
Dined on 7/17/2013
Distinctive menu, mostly well
executed. I like that the menu isn't over ambitious so they can focus on quality over quantity. Some specials would be nice, particulary in the middle of summer when there's such an abundance of good produce. We ordered a ton of dishes and left our plates clean. The cocktails were very good and the beer list extremely well chosen. The feel of the place is very non-L.A. and there are some charming eccentric touches. Very fair prices."
Dined on 7/2/2013
Unique location inside of the
funky Alexandria Hotel, food is very creative and tasty!"
Dined on 6/9/2013
The food was unusual, and some
items were better than others. My husband and mother are very adventurous in their food choices and we were there to celebrate my husband's birthday. My daughter and I are very picky eaters; however, everyone enjoyed something. We tried the lamb's neck, bone marrow, matzoh balls with bacon, the grebness (sp?)(fried chicken skin), broccoli, corn, and fish, as well as the sticky pudding/bread. I had a terrific beer and my husband and mother drank a grenache wine, also very good. The decor was stark but the atmosphere was very fun, with the mismatched chairs, and soft lighting. Our hostess/ waitress, Claire, was patient with all of our questions. All in all, it was a terrific evening. Ilan Hall was not there. : ("
