Diner Reviews
  • "We were pleasantly surprised by this Gastro Pub. There are a lot of mixed reviews out there. Apparently, the one thing they have been is inconsistent. We had fantastic french fries and appetizers, but a couple that joined us said the food was much better than the last time they had been there. I had the broccoli and the smoked salmon. The smoked salmon is VERY small, but very tasty. The broccoli was amazing, but again our friends said it was cold and soggy when they visited. So, I would go back and suggest it to people. The only complaint was the deconstructed deviled egg. Who deconstructs a deviled egg? "

  • "We really enjoyed the variety of the appetizers and small plates. Great place to sample a variety of food and drink!"

  • "If you are going to serve pizza, make sure it is half decent. It looked like someone just took a can of low qualifiy tomatoes and crushed them and poured it on a cracker based pizza. Put a little mozza and very little basil and a way you go. Was very lacking in seasoning. Worst pizza I have had in years. My kids suggested the Sobey's deli pizza at 7.99 was better. The hamburger which was recommended by the waiter was disappointing. The small burger was placed on a huge bun, with a little lettuce and tomato. Didn't notice anything else on the bun. Very plain. Fries were good - hooray!"

  • "Second time there. Enjoyed it a lot, will be back."

  • "We ordered the cheese board and the charcuterie board and felt it was not good value for our money. The homemade guyere cheese was ho hum. We wouldn't go too soon , as too many other places to try. The menu was okay. The service was great."

  • "Liking what is going on at Glass Monkey, and the vibe is cool with Rob the owner. Very nice staff compliments the establishment. I've been several times, and getting a reservation is right up there, with weekends. Watching a game there is also, handy with wine in hand. I recommend this place to anyone on the southside, that don't feel like tripping downtown, or has had its fill of Whyte Ave.,"

  • "Love the appetizers and how they are presented, the casual and lively ambiance, excellent wines and friendly but non hovering service. It's my new favourite place."

  • "We went with our 2 year old. Fantastic food, fantastic service. I think the owner went home and got us a high chair. I love when the owners care. I would recommend and go back often."

  • "Great atmosphere, nice mix of all age groups...although very noisy and hard to have a decent conversation as the volume turns up. Decent wine selection but on the expensive side - could use a few more mid-range choices. First visit we went with the small plates and we were very satisfied. Second time tried the pappardelle with pulled pork...way too much pork and not enough pappardelle. When asked for some bread to soak it up, they didn't have any. Sausage and mash was very tasty:) And of course "Jack's" bread pudding is still to die for! Very friendly servers, just need a little more experience. Will definitely go back and work my way through the menu!"

  • "Menu selection was ideal for our group of 4. We ordered 5 snacks, 3 small plates, a pizza and dessert. Lots of variety and plenty of food. Also, a handy location for all of us coming from 3 different parts of the city."

  • "Whenever anyone enters blasts of cold air comes in and onto the patrons at several tables. Too many tables for space-- people frequently kicked leg of my chair;no room to maneuver. Menu does not provide choices that suited our group of four. The charcuterie plate a disappointment - meats were all fatty, no cheese; toast was drenched in olive oil. Not worth $19. Asked that the salmon be cooked for another minute, told that this is how's salmon is done now. So much for trying to satisfy the customer; had to insist before waitress would comply. My meal had initially arrived 5 minutes after those of my table mates, and before my meal returned, the others had completed theirs-- no apology given. Waitress did her best to ignore our table."

  • "It's great to have a restaurant like this in the neighborhood. Gives people another option then going to the chain restaurants like Earls, Joeys, State and Main. Tons of parking so real easy to access. The room is decorated real well and lends to a real energetic feel. Service was fine and the wine and beer list are huge but a little expensive. The food however is just OK...everything we have had from here is fine but not spectacular."

  • "Unfortunately this restaurant does not live up to the hype. It was nice to see that it was very busy and had a good crowd, but that was the only plus side. We ordered the burger and pasta. The burger was extremely greasy and before I could even take a bite the bun was soggy. Fries were almost all little, over cooked nubs - definitely got the bottom of the bag. The pasta was super plain and watery. I believe we ordered the tagliatelle. All around not a good experience. I would not recommend it."

  • "This is a new restaurant taking over for Jacks Grill. The place is comfortable with a nice Decor. We had the fish tacos, beet salad, and green beans and they were all very good. Would recommend. For dessert we had the lemon cake which was over the top. If you like a good lemon merengue then you have to have this. It's similar in taste to the lemon bit in that pie but that's where it ends cuz it's so much more. Good beer and wine selection. But wine was expensive so we had beer. Would recommend this place."

  • "Our party of five had 5 appetizers to start. The devilled eggs are a miss, the other the other four were tasty. Everyone enjoyed the entrees. The beet salad was very good. The desserts were good. All in all a nice evening."

  • "The front entrance is not that obvious, as one is used to going through the old front doors to Jack's. Once inside, it has I undergone a great renovation. Nice atmosphere, wonderful staff and service and very tasty food!"

  • "On the whole, a very pleasant dining experience--surprised since I drive along 111th all the time, go in that shopping centre for Sunterra and Wasabi, but had never noticed Glass Monkey until I saw it on here. High quality food and drink, had tapas and pizza, quality ran from good to amazing. Server was polite and helpful but did forget a tea. Atmosphere is pleasant, feels like elegant hanging-out. Do request a seat away from the windows, unless you like being blown on by the super-strong heating fan vents. But on the whole a definite thumbs-up."

  • "We had a reservation for a huge group and I was a little nervous when I came in and saw how packed it was that we would never get in! But they worked their magic, got us a table and took excellent care of us. Food and drinks were excellent, service was great. It was a fun night out. This restaurant is a real neighborhood treasure!"

  • "Certainly not Jack's Grill anymore. Perhaps our expectations were too high, but our night out was kind of disappointing. The food wasn't bad and the service was ok. The TVs threw us off, definitely gives it a pub feel as opposed to a nice restaurant. Can't say the service was slow, in fact, our meal came out so fast our date night lasted a whole 50 minutes. Felt like we were being rushed back out the door. Wine list was pricey for a lounge with three TVs staring down at me."

  • "We had a wonderful evening at the Glass Monkey. It was lively, and packed, and the service was excellent. Most items on the menu were great, some more average. I love the salads most...the caesar salad and kale salads are amazing and unique. It was fun to try a new spot in town, and we desperately need more places like this in southwest Edmonton."

  • "Busy night with a middle age crowd. Great Beer list. Cheese and Charcuterie need bigger portions or more items or they need to be plated on smaller boards. Nothing worse than having minute portions served on a big plank. Squid was great. Marguerite pizza yummy. Hostess at door was very patient and professional during an extremely busy time. Our server was good."

  • "Great little spot. Somewhat awkward layout but the design is quite well done. Great selection of Belgian beers. Food was pretty good, but the service was very average."

  • "They need to get more experience with turnover rates so they can schedule better. Our reservation was for 8:15 and it was 8:45 before we got seated. Many others were in the same situation."

  • "There was confusion with our reservations, so waited about 40 minutes for a table. Staff were reasonably friendly but seemed overwhelmed and confused about things. The waiter was knowledgable and good. I was a little surprised by the food. There were some items that were quite tasty but definitely some disappointments."

  • "Highly recommended! Dinner for 2 = Great atmosphere, great service and great food. The menu choices were refreshing and a nice change from the usual samples around Edmonton. We went from the Small Plate menu with Meatballs & Broccoli which were fantastic along with the Fish Tacos and Fries....and portions were perfect....but importantly was the service which was exceptional. Also, the extensive list of wine & ale (beer) to choose from was hard as they come from all over the globe - we opted for a few samples...local, Saskatchewan & Oregon beers were great. But there is something for everyone looking for different flavors or just your traditional taste bud. We will be back!"

  • "This is a "pub" so the noise levels were extremely loud. But the service was impeccable and so accommodating - we were there all night and they didn't ask us to leave, even though the line up was out and through the door! The food was good - the fish tacos were amazing."

  • "This is the second time I have dined at the Glass Monkey. Both times the food was delicious. They have a new take on snacks including parsnip puree, reviled eggs and a marinated flank steak. The light meals also offer interesting taste treats and the salads are excellent. However the wine is VERY pricy. Other than the house wine (Cono Sur) which goes for $7.95 a glass, you can pay up to $33 a glass for wine, with the average price being around $16 for a six ounce glass. This will definitely be a deterrent to my returning to the restaurant."

  • "Overall we had a great experience. The only area we though needs to be reviewed is the fact that the wines by the glass list is extraordinarily expensive! There is only one option (house red or white) that is not completely unreasonable. I love having wine with dinner but could not bring myself to spend more than $15-30 on one glass of wine. It's a good thing they can make a great martini and their beer list is great. Lovely food and service."

  • "Went on a Friday night after a long week. Was very impressed with the adult drink list. The ability to buy appetizers in groups was great too. I would have like to see a bit more on their menu for meal selection. When we were there there was a family with 2 small children and they seemed out of place as everyone else was adults. Shared a bread pudding dessert which was fantastic"

  • "I've heard great things about The Glass Monkey, so I had high expectations going in. Overall everything was good. Service was perfect, our server was there when she needed to be and wasn't overly intrusive, as some can be sometimes. we went in wanting to take our time and eat a lot, she allowed it and didn't rush us at all. The food was good, although I found the pasta dish to be a bit bland. The beet salad was my favorite and the fish tacos were awesome, I didn't think I would have been a fan, I could have ordered another plate of them. The only thing I and my guest didn't like at all were the stools at the high tops, they are incredibly uncomfortable, the seat is too short, it cuts you off and makes your legs numb."

  • "Nice place. Went on a Tuesday and it was surprisingly busy. Great beer selection. Wine - not much selection at a reasonable price - mostly expensive. Food was good - not cheap but tasty. Good menu selection. Service was a bit slow overall, but we weren't in a rush. Would put it on the list of places to go to again."

  • "Enjoyed the atmosphere and vibrant scene. The wine choices were very good, although the wines listed on website were not on the wine list...to my disappointment. The food was good but not outstanding ...portion size was very small for the price. Service was very good Rather expensive but it is a trendy place"

  • "I really enjoyed the service; the servers comments were specific to our questons and will help me to give details of menu options when I am recommending this restaurant. Her manner made me comfortable immediately, and to me the service can be as important as the food."

  • "When we walked in we were a little worried about the noise level and the closeness of the tables but once we sat down all of that was forgotten. The food is great and so was the service. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to friends."

  • "Met a group of friends here. Had the burger which was delicious. Really juicy and well prepared. Came with fries and for $2 extra got garlic aioli which was terrific. My friend had the beet salad which also was amazing. Overall, I would come back here in a heart beat--there were so many things on the menu that I would like to try."
