Diner Reviews
  • "Enjoyed our long, leisurely lunch. It was very quiet. As there was only one other table of guests in the room, no one was rushing us. The horses and the deer in the field in front of us added to the relaxed atmosphere. The food could not be faulted! We all ordered different sandwiches and sides for our lunch and we were all very pleased with our choices."

  • "This was our second time at The Gates in 2 weeks. Both times I ordered the duck because it is amazing. The reason I say this is because our meals this last time took close to an hour and a half? The tables around us who came about the same time received their meals well ahead of us. When we questioned the waitress why it was taking so long she said the duck takes longer. That upset us more because last time it did not take long and the table right beside us ordered duck just ahead of us and it came in a reasonable time. just tell us a mistake happened in the kitchen or whatever the honest answer was!"

  • "We were a party of 8 celebrating a birthday. Certainly we enjoyed ourselves, but noticed there were less choices than the year before. For the price we would think about going to The Fort Garry Hotel next time. The ambience of The Gates is very relaxing and we always love to feed the horses."

  • "I love coming to the place for the great food, and the deserts are out of the world! I try to get here at least 3 times a year. The service is also excellent."

  • "This restaurant easily lives up to its commendable reputation. Always outstanding service, wonderful ambience, with a flare that makes guests feel a little more special. Of course the menu is only outdone by the quality and taste of food served. Dining at the Gates is a pleasant experience not soon forgotten..!!"

  • "It was the end of a perfect day for us as we had just come from the afternoon symphony. Even though it is off the beaten path it is worth the trip. I have just introduced The Gates to my fiance who liked his dinner very much and our waitress was exceptional. He is also very impressed with the Sunday brunch. We are planning to have our very intimate marriage dinner at The Gates."

  • "My husband and I both were not impressed. Server took about 10 minutes to greet us, appetizers were the only good food, my entree was undercooked and bland, my husbands was over cooked. Server didn't ask us if we wanted more drinks and didn't seem to care if we liked the food. Glad we had a gift certificate that covered most of the costs or would have been really unhappy."

  • "My partner and I enjoyed our evening at The Gates. The menu was diverse and the special enticed one of us. It was venison, and all I can say is wow. The service was super responsive. The wine list was large and met our need as it was well matched to our dinner. The scotch and port bookended the meal well. No hesitation - if you wish an outstanding meal, professional service with a smile, and a great location, come to the Gates."

  • "It was lovely. We went for brunch, the orange juice was delicious, service polite, pleasant and efficient, the food was fresh, flavourful and gourmet. The desserts had me wishing I had eaten less. It was a perfect start to a sunny Sunday."

  • "First time experience for both my wife and I. We loved it, atmosphere was romantic and food was amazing. Unbelievable sockeye salmon!!! A++++++++ Will definitely recommend!!"

  • "I have a few friends who like to go with me to The Gates for special occasions, birthdays, etc., and we always choose the Sunday Brunch as there is an amazing selection of delights, something for everyone. I end up going a few times a year, but I allow my friends to leave before I do so I can take a couple of carrots out to the horses which is more of a treat to me than their endless desserts. The entire occasion is special and I recommend it to everyone I talk to."

  • "Just started going back after several years, and glad we did. A top-shelf experience from start to finish: professional and attentive service, elegant and comfortable, and some of the best tasting food around here. The rack of lamb is probably the best in the Winnipeg area, and they have a decent little wine list and a perfect selection of desserts. The Gates is well worth the small extra distance to get there!"

  • "The are where we were seated was noisy. It might have been the man who was talking loudly at the table beside us (we could hear every word he said) or the acoustics. We were also seated near the kitchen entrance which is loud as well. Once our server started at our table the service was good, it was just a bit longer than expected before anybody stopped by. Food was excellent."

  • "My husband and I went to The Gates on Roblin for our Valentine's dinner out and it did not disappoint. The Gates holds a special place in our hearts bescusd it is tied to our wedding, which we held there 5 months earlier, but seeing it at night does transform the feel of your dining experience. In daylight, it is charming and rustic. At night, it has a warm and romantic feel to it. What was nice about the dining experience was that it was not solely based on a fixed-price menu like so many restaurants do on special occasions. The Gates menu is extensive, offering many delicious entrees to choose from. Try the wild sockeye salmon as it has a unique citrus flavour and it's a very healthy option if you forgo the potatoes and ask for veggies."

  • "As a first time visitors to the Gates we were impressed by the atmosphere and presentation. The food was excellent from the Baked Brie appetizer to the entrées. The Prime rib was none to perfection and melt in your mouth good. The Tenderloin and Gnochi Trio was very interesting and delicious. Portions were more than adequate so no room for dessert, though if they would have had a Creme Broulet we would have shared one. The volume in the small dining room was a bit high as the tables are fairly close together and the walls are hard, so conversations drifted over. Overall a very pleasant recommended experience."

  • "This was our first visit to the Gates and we were not disappointed. Everything was utmost perfection in food, wine and service. We sent the chef a glass of Guinness on us in appreciation of the perfectly prepared food and presentation. We will be back often for sure."

  • "Our entrees, prime rib and sockeye salmon, were very tasty. The prime rib could have been warmer but otherwise it was very good. The salad and the crab cake were also delicious."

  • "There was a nice variety of food items for those of us who have food issues. The food was flavourful. The amounts were getting low, however, we were dining at the tailend of the brunch buffet. 3/3 of us enjoyed the atmosphere and food, as well as the music."

  • "This is my favourite Sunday brunch location so far. I took my parents here on Feb 2, 2014 and they too loved it. The buffet is quite varied with enough items to make you feel the trip to Headingly was worth it. It's not quite as much nor as extravagant as Hotel Fort Garry, but I can't complain for this price. The ambience and the location is just fantastic. The service was very good and friendly. We did have to wait for almost 15 minutes despite a reservation."

  • "The Gates is no doubt a good restaurant, but that's all it is - just good. It's pricey, and the service was very slow even though there were only 3 occupied tables the entire night! The restaurant is in an old cottage/estate, but the decor doesn't fit the theme, and it wasn't really done properly. It was a bit too pretentious for what it is. I had the beef tenderloin, which was a very nice cut of meat, but could have been smaller with more side vegetables, and more flavourful, especially considering it was $40. The Gates is fine, but it's overpriced, and not worth the drive."

  • "Our party consisted of nine family and friends. The accommodations were lovely."

  • "We've had pleasant experiences at The Gates before; but lunch last Saturday was just plain boring and, considering the expense, we may or may not try it again. White pickeral on a white plate with any colour (vegetables) buried beneath the fish made for a less than ordinary presentation. The spash of “borscht” syrup on top did little to improve its appeal. The Tenderloin sandwich was pronounced "ordinary without much flavour". The Rueben sandwich was good as were the vegetables on the Vegetable Flatbread; but on the whole... ho-hum."

  • "Everyone had a great time at The Gates. We all enjoyed our dishes plus the staff was very friendly and attentive. This was my second visit to The Gates and both experiences were notable. The grounds are lovely in summer and our waitress offered to take our picture in the back courtyard when she saw we had our camera. I would recommend this restaurant for a special occasion or for a romantic evening."

  • "This is my husbands & my favourite restaurant. We went one year for our Anniversary we did not tell The Gates it was our anniversary but when we toasted each other our server heard. After a fabulous meal ( i had Kobe beef) our server brought over this most decadent dessert to our surprise she said she seen & heard our toast. When we go out for a beautiful meal we only go to The Gates."

  • "We were a group of four people. At reservation time, over the website, I specified that one of the individual in the group has allergy for fish and fish products. Additionally, I also mentioned that two individuals don’t eat pork. When we arrived, on Jan 06, 2014 for brunch, we found out that fish and pork were the dominant food. I did make a comment to the waitress but what could she do? To pay $40 per person for salads and waffles it was way to expensive for us."

  • "the selection and overall dining experience for the Sunday Brunch was fantastic,The service was very good, and friendly.my favorite was the carved beef, and the made to order omelet and crepe stations.my one minor complaint was the seating plan and interaction between previously seated diners and and incoming traffic.too much congestion.we will definitely be back"

  • "My wife and I went for our anniversary and had a great time. We sat in the study area at a table next to a fireplace, and had the area all to ourselves. The food was very good, and the service was also top notch. Would definately recommend The Gates as a place to go to make that special occasion of yours just a little more special."

  • "THIS WAS OUR FIRST VISITE TO THE GATES TOGETHER. MY WIFE HAD BEEN THERE TWO WEEKS BEFORE FOR LUNCH AND FELL IN LOVE WITH THE GATES. SO. WHEN ASKED WERE SHE WOULD LIKE TO GO FOR LUNCH ON HER B/DAY, SHE REPLIED "The GATES" OF COURSE ! WE ENJOYED OUR LUNCH ON A TABLE FOR TWO, IN THE SUN ROOM OVERLOOKING PRESTINE SNOW AND THE TWO HORSES. OUR EXPERIENCE WAS GREAT, THE FOOD WAS FABULOUS, THE THE SERVICE WAS OUT STANDING, THE VIEW WAS FANTASTIC, AND THE SUN WAS SHINNING. IT COULD NOT HAVE BEEN A MORE PERFECT DAY. THANK YOU FOR MAKING IS SO !"

  • "It was an enjoyable night, it was a birthday supper for my wife and my step daughter joined us too. The table for 3 was nice but location was not the best as one of us had to sit with the chair's back to the wall and there was very little room between the chair and table making it a bit uncomfortable. The food was excellent, I had the duck confit with mac and cheese and it was the best mac and cheese I have ever had but my grilled broccoli was cold. The duck was tender and very good. It is a pricy restaurant and even with a 100 dollar gift certificate we still had to pay another 86 dollars so for my family it is a once a year type of experience."

  • "Good to be away from frenzied and cramped dining Food is delicious and gracefully presented. Serving staff efficient, professional without scurrying. Lunch omelette was perfect and the shrimp entree was generous and perfectly prepared. Their version of carrot cake the most sumptuous in winnipeg. You must try it. Of course we will be back!"
