  • Public Transit: The L, Q, N, R, 4, 5, and 6 trains are all located in Union Square. Several entrances can be found throughout the square itself, however the closest to us is at 16th Street and Union Square West.
    The F and M trains are located on the corner of 15th Street and 6th Avenue.

The Gander is Chef Jesse Schenker’s new American restaurant located in Manhattan’s Flatiron district.   • "Restaurant feels nice and well decorated, food was interesting and well prepared, although portions were less than generous given the price point for the meal. The facet that detracted most from the experience was the service - plenty of wait staff around, and the restaurant was probably less than a third full when we arrived, but still took about 20-25 minutes to even get a drink let alone order food. Waitress was either absent or awkwardly in your face. Only way to get another glass of wine was to actively wave over the sommellier. Food was good - but at that price point the service has to match, and with the number of alternatives in the area, highly unlikely we would bother returning."

  • "The menu is incredibly inventive, try the brisket tots, sweetbreads and the lobster roll! The staff were friendly and proud advocates for the restaurant. Our request for a business card resulted in a visit from one of the principals who spent time answering all of our questions about the construction of the menu and the restaurant design, which is very nice. Well-worth a visit!"

  • "The food was very good but the portions were ridiculously small for most of the apps and entrees considering the price. The room is spacious with a shabby sheik beige theme that's really good for crowding around the small bar with friends. Waitress had to be reminded about drink orders a few times but service was fine."

  • "I dined there after reading the NUT review but was disappointed from the beginning. Had early reservations and even though the restaurant was quite empty, the hostess on the phone made us wait at least 5 min. In the dining room there were only four tables occupied yet they seat my party of two next to a table of four. When I asked for a quiet spot, they made me wait again!! I tried the prix fixe but didn't like a single course. Corn soup was subpar: gnocchi was tough; spaghetti w clams was drowned in tasteless breadcrumbs; my med rare steak was tough. My glass of red was my favourite part if the meal."

  • "Upon booking a reservation at The Gander I did not realize how nice the restaurant was. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the ambiance was relaxing and spacious, unlike many crowded NYC restaurants. Service was fantastic. Multiple servers came to the table to place and clear plates, and the table was wiped down between each course. We went for brunch and the food was delicious. I believe there was only one main course that wan't egg-based. Not being an egg fan myself, I ordered the pancake, but would have liked to have more options. I am very interested in going back to The Gander for dinner."

  • "Friday night at 9pm and the restaurant and bar was half full. The bartender before dinner barely gave us the time of day. Our waiter barely made an appearance throughout the entire meal of mediocre food. Which he would have no idea how our meal was as he never came by to ask. On the way out, not a single "have a good night" or "thank you" from anyone. Would never go back."

  • "Was in last Sunday with a group of seven. The service was top-notch from the first moment through the door. Everyone (especially Edgardo and Kimberly, our servers) was extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful, and that includes Jason who I spoke with on the phone the night before in order to confirm that our party would be ok even though two of us wouldn't arrive on time. He (and everyone on Sunday) was extremely accommodating. Great wine list!! Food: calamari (super crispy!) salad was delicious. Bloody Marys beautifully made!! Plate of breakfast pastries was solid. Only complaint was that the sticky bun was a bit TOO sweet. Duck confit hash, Country ham (seemed like prosciutto) omelet, and bangers and hash browns ALL DELICIOUS!!!"

One (dismissable) misstep was the complimentary birthday dessert.... I'm not a chocolate person, so the mocha mousse cake was lost on me.... especially in lieu of that rhubarb clomage extravaganza I missed out. Everything was exceptional. Take a gander at The Gander. You will NOT be disappointed."

  • "The Gander is refreshingly unhip, and I mean that as a compliment. The space is very well redecorated, the dining room spacious with good seating, roomy tables, and moderate noise. So if you want to have a conversation with your fellow diners, it's perfect. The bar room is lively and noisier, for a different kind of dining experience. The service is impeccable, friendly, not stuffy. The wine list reveals many gems, well priced, and our sommelier was helpful, delivering wine geekery when we prodded, but only because we prodded. The food is delicious, based on excellent ingredients. The pea soup, the trout tartare with its skin "crouton", the shrimp cevice, and the fluke were excellent."

  • "We had a very enjoyable dining experience. The Gander has many different types of dishes that are not found in other places. I only wish i could have tried more dishes. The salmon tartare was really nice. The sweetbread appetizer was different than any other time that I have had sweetbreads and if you like them, then you must try this dish. The branzino dish was great and the cauliflower side was amazing. I only wish I could make the cauliflower that crispy at home. For dessert we had a mixture of ice creams and sorbets -- again different tastes and all were great! Our server was very helpful but not overbearing."

  • "The Gander was highly recommended to us so went to celebrate our son's birthday with him and his girlfriend. The place is beautiful - nicely appointed contemporary style. The service was terrific as very attentive including a very congenial and knowledgeable sommelier. The disappointment came with the food! The opening snacks were very tasty as well as the fried calamari salad. It was difficult to find the very stingy amount of tuna in the raw tuna appetizer. The entrees were all too salty - the risotto was sent back only to be replaced by a salty spaghetti w/ clams. The duck breast was very good, the pork chop not so good.At these NYC prices for not so great food, we won't return. Sorry."

One thing was more extraordinary than the next. My companion and I eat out at least twice per week and we were hard pressed to think of a meal we have enjoyed more this year. There simply wasn't anything that wasn't great, and the portions were the perfect size, as well. "

  • "We went the other night as a group of 8. I really enjoyed my food…and I am picky. I started with the calamari salad. This is a green salad with some fried calamari, nuts, and a few other things. I always get dressing on the side and I was able to control the amount. The flavor was really nice, not overpowering. Others ordered it too and found it "okay" but I liked the subtly of the flavor. I also had the small portion of the pasta with the rabbit. Again, very subtle flavor that I really liked…I believe it had some breadcrumb topping. The small portion of this dish is MUCH larger than the small portion of other pastas. I think my friends were disappointed with their pasta portions. The service was very good with the exception of the busers."

  • "We started with the brisket tots. I don't particularly care for brisket, but the tots were unbelievable. They were so good, actually, that we ordered two more of them over the course of the evening. This is not to take anything away from the other dishes we had. It was NOT downhill from there. We ordered the charcuterie, shrimp, and the bacon salad. All were great! Even dessert was memorable. I had the creme brulee - preparation was very different than expected, but perfect. In all a terrific dining experience. Will definitely come back."

It took some doing - 3 phone calls - to get a decent dinner hour reservation, but once there we had a very lovely evening .... extremely attentive service and delicious food. While everyone talks about the "brisket tots" the dinner menu holds up well. All our entrees were perfectly prepared and even our picky daughter-in-law who never eats anything but pasta with butter, said she'd love to come back."

  • "Excellent brunch menu with lots of options, all well-executed. Convenient for business lunch or for brunch with family or friends. Large dining room means there is usually no wait on weekends, but reservations may be helpful. Make sure to get the side of country bread. It's fantastic."
