Diner Reviews
  • "the menu isn't fully thought through. some very odd combinations, such as a side of asparagus with olives."

  • "We went for brunch. Everything felt a bit oily/greasy: country fried steak, duck hash, fries."

  • "Went to Gander for lunch on Saturday with high hopes of getting a great meal (based on all the reviews I've been reading). My friend and I both ordered the gnochetti, which our server said was "really good". Unfortunately, the dish was completely tasteless. It literally tasted like the chef boiled some pasta and threw it on a plate without putting sauce or even salt on it. I never really return food at restaurants, but I had to in this instance. We ended up ordering chorizo and the country ham omelette after we returned the pasta, and both were mediocre. You can get much better brunch at a few places around the corner for a better price. On the plus side, the side of bangers was tasty and the service was really great."

  • "My wife and I dined at an early sitting on a Friday night. We were seated in the corner of the bench seating which was functional and comfortable. We found the decor acceptable and despite the restaurant soon filling up the noise levels were fine. Staff were attentive and friendly all night. There were probably 6-7 staff that we interacted with from welcome on arrival to the sommelier to the table clearing/ wiping guys in between each course. We each had 3courses with drinks and wine. The food was well presented and tasty. We would recommend The Gander as an enjoyable dining experience."

  • "I did not love the decor upon arriving, looked almost unthoughtful/sterile /cheap, and the bar area loud loud. The dining room was a relief and my table was great cornered booth, get for 2. Still the decor ?? Cheap Scandinavian (whether it is or not). Not romantic /sexy, nor was the crowd dressed up per se. Why don't foodies want to look good when they go out? Great Sommelier. Led us very well and took wonderful care of us. Food was good, tho possibly I ordered things that just did not wow me and am betting many dishes were more fantastic than ours. I could eat the Brisket Tots every day, tho one should not. I would def go back again, everyone was very hospitable. Our server on top of her game, and there just the right amount of time."

  • "What a great meal we had at The Gander. We came for Restaurant Week and could not have been happier. The selection was interesting and the food was perfect. Adored the brisket tots as well as the spaghetti and clams. Service was good and the house manager was attentive and seemed to genuinely care about our experience. We will be back."

  • "The restaurant was seriously understaffed. As far as we could tell there was just one waitress serving nearly the entire back room. Both the bartender and waitress were joyless and unsmiling. The waitress was constantly distracted by other tables while taking our order and all special requests for things like olive oil and salt were promptly forgotten and required numerous follow ups with the busboys who were incongruously plentiful. Although the food was great, will not return because of the abysmal service."

  • "Restaurant feels nice and well decorated, food was interesting and well prepared, although portions were less than generous given the price point for the meal. The facet that detracted most from the experience was the service - plenty of wait staff around, and the restaurant was probably less than a third full when we arrived, but still took about 20-25 minutes to even get a drink let alone order food. Waitress was either absent or awkwardly in your face. Only way to get another glass of wine was to actively wave over the sommellier. Food was good - but at that price point the service has to match, and with the number of alternatives in the area, highly unlikely we would bother returning."

  • "Went to The Gander recently and loved the food. Initially, the service was great too, but then dropped off. The wait between our starters and entrees was ridiculous, and then it took 20 minutes to get our check after we asked for it. Hopefully these issues are resolved because we loved the food, ambience, etc."

  • "We had a fabulous time here. Delicious food. Excellent service. No background music so the acoustics make it possible to have a conversation. We were a large group and everyone raved about their meals. We will be back."

  • "The menu is incredibly inventive, try the brisket tots, sweetbreads and the lobster roll! The staff were friendly and proud advocates for the restaurant. Our request for a business card resulted in a visit from one of the principals who spent time answering all of our questions about the construction of the menu and the restaurant design, which is very nice. Well-worth a visit!"

  • "The food was very good but the portions were ridiculously small for most of the apps and entrees considering the price. The room is spacious with a shabby sheik beige theme that's really good for crowding around the small bar with friends. Waitress had to be reminded about drink orders a few times but service was fine."

  • "I dined there after reading the NUT review but was disappointed from the beginning. Had early reservations and even though the restaurant was quite empty, the hostess on the phone made us wait at least 5 min. In the dining room there were only four tables occupied yet they seat my party of two next to a table of four. When I asked for a quiet spot, they made me wait again!! I tried the prix fixe but didn't like a single course. Corn soup was subpar: gnocchi was tough; spaghetti w clams was drowned in tasteless breadcrumbs; my med rare steak was tough. My glass of red was my favourite part if the meal."

  • "Definitely a great new place with a very nice vibe. food excellent with reasonable portions and the service was attentive without being overpowering. a lot of expensvie wine on the menu but you can still find some nice double digit selections. worth going and I would definitely go back"

  • "Upon booking a reservation at The Gander I did not realize how nice the restaurant was. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the ambiance was relaxing and spacious, unlike many crowded NYC restaurants. Service was fantastic. Multiple servers came to the table to place and clear plates, and the table was wiped down between each course. We went for brunch and the food was delicious. I believe there was only one main course that wan't egg-based. Not being an egg fan myself, I ordered the pancake, but would have liked to have more options. I am very interested in going back to The Gander for dinner."

  • "This place does not stand out from the crowd or live up to expectations, except on price (which was upwards of $200 for a moderate meal for two). I wouldn't waste the time or money."

  • "Friday night at 9pm and the restaurant and bar was half full. The bartender before dinner barely gave us the time of day. Our waiter barely made an appearance throughout the entire meal of mediocre food. Which he would have no idea how our meal was as he never came by to ask. On the way out, not a single "have a good night" or "thank you" from anyone. Would never go back."

  • "Best "Lobster Roll" ever. From the perfectly timed service, beautiful decor and light, but interesting food. You can't go wrong here."

  • "Was in last Sunday with a group of seven. The service was top-notch from the first moment through the door. Everyone (especially Edgardo and Kimberly, our servers) was extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful, and that includes Jason who I spoke with on the phone the night before in order to confirm that our party would be ok even though two of us wouldn't arrive on time. He (and everyone on Sunday) was extremely accommodating. Great wine list!! Food: calamari (super crispy!) salad was delicious. Bloody Marys beautifully made!! Plate of breakfast pastries was solid. Only complaint was that the sticky bun was a bit TOO sweet. Duck confit hash, Country ham (seemed like prosciutto) omelet, and bangers and hash browns ALL DELICIOUS!!!"

  • "We had a great evening at The Gander on June 28, largely due to the food and amazing service. The room itself is designed well and the acoustics not so loud. Our server was approachable, funny, met our energy level and was terrific with explaining all the food and wine."

  • ".... is good at The Gander. It's GREAT at The Gander, for either gender, make, year or model. Jesse Schenker's food is immaculate. One (dismissable) misstep was the complimentary birthday dessert.... I'm not a chocolate person, so the mocha mousse cake was lost on me.... especially in lieu of that rhubarb clomage extravaganza I missed out. Everything was exceptional. Take a gander at The Gander. You will NOT be disappointed."

  • "The Gander is refreshingly unhip, and I mean that as a compliment. The space is very well redecorated, the dining room spacious with good seating, roomy tables, and moderate noise. So if you want to have a conversation with your fellow diners, it's perfect. The bar room is lively and noisier, for a different kind of dining experience. The service is impeccable, friendly, not stuffy. The wine list reveals many gems, well priced, and our sommelier was helpful, delivering wine geekery when we prodded, but only because we prodded. The food is delicious, based on excellent ingredients. The pea soup, the trout tartare with its skin "crouton", the shrimp cevice, and the fluke were excellent."

  • "Had Sunday brunch. Ordered the duck confit hash except it came with more potatoes than hash. The potatoes were not included in the description. There was no bread served. Charged me $4 more until I pointed it out."

  • "We had a very enjoyable dining experience. The Gander has many different types of dishes that are not found in other places. I only wish i could have tried more dishes. The salmon tartare was really nice. The sweetbread appetizer was different than any other time that I have had sweetbreads and if you like them, then you must try this dish. The branzino dish was great and the cauliflower side was amazing. I only wish I could make the cauliflower that crispy at home. For dessert we had a mixture of ice creams and sorbets -- again different tastes and all were great! Our server was very helpful but not overbearing."
    Dined on 6/20/2014
  • "Wine list, I think they need some more moderately priced wines. Some of the bottles were way too expensive. Made it difficult to comfortably order a couple of bottles. Food was good although my shrimp appetizer was a tiny portion and had no substance to it."
    Dined on 6/17/2014
  • "Went here for brunch on a Saturday. Got the German pancake and the confit duck hash. Both were elegant, complex, and utterly delicious. The asparagus side was delicious and profound in a way you wouldn't expect aspargus to be. Drinks were good as well. A must bisit"

  • "And the tots were the best thing we had. everything was good, though the lamb pastrami was underwhelming. the service was friendly but not obtrusive"

  • "I've only been here on a business lunch once last week but fully intend to return to try out their tasty sounding cocktails. I had the beet ravioli and it was FANTASTIC."

  • "As fans of Recette, we were looking forward to trying The Gander, and it didn't disappoint. The Gander is larger and somewhat more formal than Recette, and Jesse Schenker's food has stepped up to match. The service, while friendly and warm, was highly professional, and the cocktails were spectacular. Don't decide what you're having until you hear about the specials!"

  • "The Gander was highly recommended to us so went to celebrate our son's birthday with him and his girlfriend. The place is beautiful - nicely appointed contemporary style. The service was terrific as very attentive including a very congenial and knowledgeable sommelier. The disappointment came with the food! The opening snacks were very tasty as well as the fried calamari salad. It was difficult to find the very stingy amount of tuna in the raw tuna appetizer. The entrees were all too salty - the risotto was sent back only to be replaced by a salty spaghetti w/ clams. The duck breast was very good, the pork chop not so good.At these NYC prices for not so great food, we won't return. Sorry."

  • "This was our first time at the restaurant and we arrived to what felt like a red carpet entrance! Everyone was friendly and inviting! No attitude at all which seems to be permeating all of NYC restaurants. Food was great! Brisket tots are a must!"

  • "Stopped in for brunch a quiet day. Impressed with decor (enjoyed the wallpaper) and space allotted for seating; one can have a decent conversation here. Pea soup was incredibly good, and our waiter explained the preparation and components of the meal with impressive command and erudition."

  • "Jesse Schenker is the best restauranteur in town. The brisket tots were only exceeded by the banana parfait which was only exceeded by the spaghetti with clam sauce. One thing was more extraordinary than the next. My companion and I eat out at least twice per week and we were hard pressed to think of a meal we have enjoyed more this year. There simply wasn't anything that wasn't great, and the portions were the perfect size, as well. "

  • "Good food but overpriced. Crisp, clean interior but lacks warmth. Service was attentive."
    Dined on 6/2/2014
  • "Service needs improvemt. Food was good. Had issues with my drinks- waiter explained there was a big party downstairs but that should not put the rest of your clientele at jeopardy. Time will tell."

  • "We went the other night as a group of 8. I really enjoyed my food…and I am picky. I started with the calamari salad. This is a green salad with some fried calamari, nuts, and a few other things. I always get dressing on the side and I was able to control the amount. The flavor was really nice, not overpowering. Others ordered it too and found it "okay" but I liked the subtly of the flavor. I also had the small portion of the pasta with the rabbit. Again, very subtle flavor that I really liked…I believe it had some breadcrumb topping. The small portion of this dish is MUCH larger than the small portion of other pastas. I think my friends were disappointed with their pasta portions. The service was very good with the exception of the busers."

  • "dinner was delicious. From the brisket "tots" through the suckling pig and lemon tart dessert everything was tasty and visually attractive. The tables were spaced apart so we were not eating on top of others. I will go back."

  • "Really enjoyed all aspects; good, service and it wasn't too noisy which was great. They sat us in a great booth when we arrived which made us like it even more! "
