Diner Reviews
  • "We don't eat at the Gamekeeper often but when we do we always leave with the question, can it be any better? We've decided the answer is no. The chefs and staff always make it a special event."

  • "Good, but very pricey. I had the rabbit which was delicious, but a really small serving."

  • "Gamekeeper is a true dining experience with a flair. There are always interesting specials and the food is consistently excellent. I have eaten at restaurants all over the country and I have had meals at Gamekeeper that are as good and most of the time better than anywhere else. From the chef to the staff it truly is dining at its best."

  • "I live in an area where good food and good restaurants are abundant. Restauranteurs in our area have great imagination and use the finest ingredients, so when going out I have high expectations. The Gamekeeper was enthusiastically recommended by a friend. We had reviewed the menu before we left and were quite excited about going to dinner at the Gamekeeper. The restaurant is a destination place, well off the beaten path. I found the waitstaff to be mediocre, and unfortunately the food the same. Quality of the ingredients was excellent, however attention to detail was lacking. Coupling the quality of the finished plate and the service of the waitstaff; weigh it against the high-end price point, I don't think it was worth it."

  • "Too often we find gourmet restaurants really offer uncomplicated fare that with even a modest amount of cooking talent can be replicated at home. Not so here--the ingredients were high quality, complex and very fresh and preparation was unique and totally professional, i.e. not something one would even attempt to duplicate at home and certainly it would cost as much just to compile the same quality and quantity of ingredients. Service was professional but not stuffy. Ambience and decor fit perfectly with the locale. A bit off the beaten path but well worth the effort for any foodie or person looking for a unique and special dining experience."

  • "We love the food at The Gamekeeper but it is pricier than a lot of other restaurants, probably due to the "exotic" entrees. We went on a Thursday as wine was 1/2 price; our waitress told us any of the wines were half price but later we were told there was a specific list. Luckily they honored the waitress's error as we had ordered an expensive bottle."

  • "Delicious food, beautiful location and view. The staff was gracious, attentive, and able to provide excellent pairing suggestions. I had the Elk leg with baked blue cheese Mac&Cheese (which was the high point of my meal). Wife had pheasant (which was delicious and well cooked) with spoonbread. The spoonbread was rather bland and completely out-shined by the amazing mac&cheese (frankly should be the side of every dish.)"

  • "Our reservation was at 8 but we weren't seated until nearly 8:25 pm. From there, things went downhill. Some items on the menu were sold out, including the entree we wanted. Service was very slow; we had to ask for bread which finally materialized and it took almost 35 minutes for the appetizer to arrive. The entrees (venison & pork) were both delicious and expertly prepared, but the long wait made us restless and by the time they were served, I was almost ready to leave. Our waiter apologized for the kitchen being "slammed", but as this is a reservations only restaurant, the kitchen and staff should be better prepared. Also, the extremely low lighting makes it hard to read the menu. Food is excellent; management needs improvement."

  • "The Gamekeeper is and has been one of the best places for special occasion dinners. The food always has been culinary excellence and once again did not disappoint. The only reason for not rating outstanding were the portions and price but the experience and cusine are noteworthy."

  • " I requested a certain table in the restaurant to celebrate the special occasion. I was not only given the table I requested; we also had incredible service, incredible food, and a great time in the quiet, peaceful ambiance of what the Gamekeeper is known to provide. I recommend the wild game mixed grill appatizer for a variety of fresh game meats. You can't go wrong with any of the entrees here; very fresh from the salads to the soup."

  • "The Gamekeeper has the most amazing view, the setting was very romantic. The service was always ready and prepared. The food was beautifully prepared and tasted delicious. The Elk, for me, was the highlight of the meal. However, my bride of fifteen years, loved the Chocolate martini."

  • "My wife and I went to the Gamekeeper for the first time for our anniversary, and we were blown away by the creative food, the wonderful drinks and wine, and the prompt and attentive service. We had appetizers, entrees, and desserts, and each selection was delicious, and utterly unique. Our server was prompt but knew not to check on us every two minutes, which gave the meal a very relaxed and enjoyable aspect. The bartenders were also friendly and knew their drinks. Our only complaint was that everything felt a bit overpriced, from $10 cocktails to $45 entrees. I understand that having a wide range of meats on hand has to be expensive, but the prices will keep us from coming back more than once every few years."

  • "This is our 2nd visit to Gamekeeper and it was a great as before. The view was as nice as the drive up the mountain. Carra was very helpful with her recommendations. We were told that we had the best table in the house. It was a very good size for two and again the view was awesome. My wife had iced tea and I had an excellent Malbec. She had the shrimp appetizer and I had the buttermilk bleu cheese salad. She decided to try the Venison and I went with the Bison. Both were excellent: the taste and the presentation. We had a very leisurely dinner and had room for coffee and dessert. We decided on the bread pudding. It was the perfect ending to an excellent evening. It a must visit if you like game and want a fantastic experience."

  • "We have eaten at the Gamekeeper many, many times since its opening in the early 2000s, and have never been disappointed. The menu changes seasonally based on what's fresh and local, and the food is always creative, interesting and delicious. Service is always very good, and the atmosphere is upscale but still very "mountain casual." No, it is not inexpensive, but despite that, we ALWAYS feel like we get very good value. Can't wait to get back up to eat there again!"

  • "Their website says it's not haute cuisine and that's technically true. But it's heaven for meat loving foodies. The dishes are creative and well executed. The service is attentive but not intrusive. I'd like to see them bring new utensils after each course but that certainly won't keep me from going back."

  • "Using my coupon from the WHS Mountain Alliance, I took my husband to the Gamekeeper for his birthday meal. Needless to say, it was delicious, and the evening was romantic, unhurried, and pleasant. We will go back! Food is delicious, and the service was wonderful. Attentive wait staff that was friendly as all get out!"

  • "The game platter was delicious, although the duck was a little overcooked. The boar sausage was impeccable, the rabbit sausage decent. The goat ricotta on escarole salad was amazing. Service was nice and quick but lacking slightly in knowledge of menu and wine. View and ambience incredible. The elk leg marvelous, the pheasant good if a little underwhelming. Chocolate torte was mediocre, the bread pudding was the best I've ever had."

  • "It is always a treat to visit The Gamekeeper! Definitely a special occasion place due to the pricing, but well worth it. The food is consistently fabulous, and I highly recommend the meat sampler appetizer. The service is top notch as well. My only criticism is that the exterior of the building is looking a little worse for wear. It definitely could use a little TLC."

  • "Our first experience to the Gamekeeper was delightful and perfect to our weekend getaway in the mountains. We enjoyed a truly fresh and scrumptious meal that you don't find on your typical restaurant menu - we highly recommend the grilled buffalo flank steak and grilled pheasant. The bourbon & caramel bread pudding dessert was an excellent choice to finishing our meal. Our waitress was awesome - she was very personable and attentive. And the scenic view and atmosphere made our night all the more special and romantic. We plan on returning the Gamekeeper on our next visit to Boone! Thanks for a wonderful night."

  • "We would not have known about Gamekeepers had my son not given us a gift certificate. Really impressed! We'll be back."

  • "My party had a myriad of foods including the amberjack, trout, and buffalo. In addition, we tried the salmon appetizer and a couple of the salads. The salmon appetizer was good, but very small. The salads were good, but lightly dressed, there wasn't very much atop the lettuce. The entrees were delicious and including succulent pieces of meat as well as fresh tasty veggies! We did have dessert and would highly recommend the chocolate cake, even though the pieces were tiny! Overall, it was a good experience, but I wouldn't go here if I were particular hungry. I would also not recommend this to a group of people as the noise level requires shouting if you are not in close proximity to your guests. If you go here it's definitely for the food!"
    Dined on 6/7/2014
  • "The quiet, woody ambiance of the Gamekeeper is offset by a slightly disturbing lack of upkeep to the grounds - to some degree, this is cute, but I was somewhat concerned about the safety of the entry, etc. The backyard martini - an apparent point of pride for their bar - was bitter and too sweet...$16 was way too much for this concoction. The salmon appetizer was drowning in oil and the salmon was way too salty - an obvious indication of transport packaging and lack of freshness, but the presentation was picture worthy. The buffalo was perfectly cooked, as were the lamb chops. All in all, an enjoyable experience (with good wine selections), but for the price, I'd rather have the items less in their "experimental stage" and more refined."

  • "My wife and I had heard about this restaurant for several years, and had waited to try it out because of the prices. When we received a $100.00 gift certificate as a gift, we decided to give it a try. The two of us ordered a glass of house wine each, and appetizer to share, and we each tried a salad and a main course. Total with tip was over $150. For that price, I expect to be impressed with everything form the setting to the service to the meal, but it was just average. The service was good, but the building did not impress us nor did the food. The building looks like a old home that was converted to a restaurant, and the entry is past a storage area up some mildewy steps to a deck. The food was over-seasoned and not impressive."

  • "We are never let down any time we visit The Gamekeeper! We visited this past weekend for our anniversary and the food and atmosphere were remarkable as always. It's nice that they have the standard menu, but always have a twist with the Mixed Game Grill appetizer and specials. We live in Charleston, SC where nice restaurants are common. I would definitely make this one of my top spots anywhere!"

  • "Food and service were outstanding. I am glad we were able to get a table in the smaller area and it wasn't as noisy as last time. Server was knowledgeable about the food and drinks. Just sorry I couldn't talk my husband into dessert. I'm sure it was delightful!"

  • "Had read an article somewhere about their great selection of game meat and looked forward for weeks to our night out while vacationing. We were not disappointed. The food was outstanding and unique and while rather pricey, unlike many high end places, the portions were quite generous and we ate it all, app (the wild game offering was a generous enough portion for our party of four, entrees and desert. The location and ambiance are unique and perfect for the mountain setting. "

  • "We love The Gamekeeper! It's a fantastic mountain dining experience situated in an old house overlooking the mountains. With several rooms, great views and a large rock fireplace with seating nearby, it is a wonderfully romantic venue of choice! We've dined there for years and I've always been hooked on their Ostrich, however, that is no longer on the menu and it is a huge disappointment - however the bison is awesome as are the vegetables, salads and appetizers. "

  • "Gamekeeper used to be one of our favorites but it has gone downhill. It may be under new management. The menu has the same, interesting, game meats as well as more traditional choices. The waitress was very attentive but the food has really gone downhill. Our salad was wilted with julienned apple that had turned brown; bread was stale; beef and bison were of good quality but too salty. The only really good dish we had was the strawberry shortcake with lavender biscuits. The waitress brought the wrong dessert coffees and seemed to be trying to get us to leave as soon as possible. Since the food quality has deteriorated, plus Gamekeeper is on a road with many tricky curves, we don't intend to return."
