Diner Reviews
  • "Food was delicious - I had venison. Location is hard to find and best to go in daylight. Would go again."

  • "I have been to the Gamekeeper many times. It is a way to have a relaxing dinner. The sampler platter of pheasant, bison, rabbit and wild boar sausage was great. It is always enjoyable to dine at the Gamekeeper. Service is always great."

  • "The food was delicious and service was excellent. Kinda pricy but worth it for special occasions! Buffalo was incredible and all local meats!"

  • "Went to dinner with a group of friends. Ambience was great, the service was good. Lamb was pretty good. The grilled escarole salad was just ok. Ravioli was not cooked properly, also the flavors were unexciting. The best thing we had was the flash fried oysters. All of our food was too salty."

  • "Nestled a bit off the parkway, the Gamekeeper is a treasure in the Blowing Rock area. It is well worth a small adventure to find it. We had a fantastic dining experience‚Ķloved every minute there. I recommend it to everyone I talk to about restaurants in the area. Quite expensive but the cuisine matches the price."

  • "Gamekeeper has been a favorite of ours since our first visit several years ago. Out special occasion night was as close to perfect as it could be! Excellent food, delicious bottle of chardonnay, perfect service, and a warm welcome. Gamekeeper's version of surf and turf with bison filets and crawfish was delicious; the duck was outstanding. Finished off with our favorite dessert in the high country - their signature Bread Pudding. It was a perfect evening!"

  • "We went all out, got the Wild Game appetizer. It was great and we liked the 3 dipping sauces. We had enough left over for Wild Game scrambled eggs in the morning. Our entrees were perfect as well. I can highly recommend the lamb. Our wine and beer were excellent too. Waitress Sandy was friendly and attentive. The chefs are fabulous. The ambiance is romantic with the fireplace crackling. You will not be disappointed!"

  • "Reservations in advance, called and confirmed special needs for seating and the menu and were assured of meeting those needs. Arrived, seated in cold room. My wife left her heavy wool coat on the entire time, her hands were so cold she could hardly hold a fork. Appetizer arrived and it wasn't as had been described and my wife couldn't eat 3/4 of it due to how it was fixed. Lamb was NOT on the menu and the only other thing that we could eat came with all fried side dishes and when it was presented, it smelled like a dead skunk on the side of the road. My wife ate only a couple of bites and myself a few more before we asked for it to be boxed up and the check. It smelled so bad in the car, we stopped at a gas station and threw it away."

  • "This restaurant has the most amazing meat options that you rarely find in North Carolina. Perfectly cooked and tasting great, we were so pleased to get a table. Slightly pricey, but you pay for quality produce and it is worth it."

  • "After hearing several folks around town rave about this place, my wife and I finally took the plunge for Valentine's dinner. Food was quite good, though our desserts were perhaps a tad pedestrian (but I'm not too big on desserts, anyway). Entrees/salads/starters , on the other hand, were as good as anything we've had in town (and better than almost everything else) thus far. Server was very friendly and attentive, and the ambience was excellent, as well. We will definitely be back!"

  • "Despite being local to Boone, it was our first trip to the Gamekeeper. It is a bit pricey so we chose to wait for a special occasion, an early Valentine's dinner. Friends had recommended the rattlesnake, however when we got there it was not on the menu. A wonderful sounding Bison dinner WAS on the menu and is what my boyfriend chose, but we were told by the server they were sold out of it. These disappointments are the reason for 4 instead of 5 stars. Otherwise, the Venison Osso Bucco and Bleu Cheese Ravioli with Duck Confit were fabulous. We also had the Oyster appetizer, I'm not big on oysters but between the breading and the sauces I enjoyed them. The recommended Bread Pudding was good, not great, and the service was outstanding."

  • "My wife and I have been wanting to try The Gamekeeper since reading the Our State magazine feature this past Fall. We were finally able to make the time and were not disappointed. We enjoyed one of the very best dining experiences we have ever had. The atmosphere is great, people were tremendously friendly, and the food was just phenomenal. We can't wait to go back."

  • "An eclectic menu, yet down to earth dishes. Restaurant was a little noisy due to 2 large family groups, but not annoyingly so. The staff were warm, friendly, and informative. This was the highlight meal of our trip, so looking forward to going back!"

  • "The Gamekeeper exceeded every expectation! Phenomenal food accompanied by fantastic wine! Our waitress was incredibly knowledgable of All items on the food & wine menu, which is always impressive & refreshing. Everyone truly believes in and is passionate about what they're creating at The Gamekeeper. We will definitely be back! Thank you for the unforgettable experience for our first year anniversary & meal!"

  • "If you are ever in the Boone, NC area this restaurant is a must. We went for our anniversary and we were not disappointed. It was after dark when we arrived, but it looked like it would be a great place to go on a Sunday afternoon, or in the summertime when it doesn't get dark at 4:30, to enjoy the spectacular surroundings. The food and service were incredible! If you've never tried ostrich, buffalo or venison, I recommend the Mixed Game Grill for a shared appetizer."

  • "Gamekeeper is a unique dining experience in a beautiful rustic atmosphere. If you have never tried things like bison, buffalo, rabbit, duck or ostrich, this is the place to do it. The ostrich is my personal favorite, but was unavailable the night we went. The bread pudding is incredible for dessert."

  • "Our evening at the Gamekeeper was delightful. A cozy fire, attentive server & gourmet meal made our celebratory evening one to remember."

  • "I live locally and get the opportunity to eat at the gamekeeper several times a year. I took some out of town friends this weekend for the first time. We all had a very enjoyable experience. The oyster salad/app with sriracha was delicious. My favorite of the apps the table shared. Delicious, rich slow braised venison shank was so tender it was falling off the bone. We also enjoyed the buffalo with crawfish tails and a heritage pork dish with apples and parsnip puree. As always, the bread pudding dessert we shared was outstanding. The restaurant has some unusual choices, but also some very accessible ones for those who might be nervous to try wild game. It is a classic in my opinion and everyone should go!"

  • "Everything was terrific...I had buffalo flank steak and wife had beef tenderloin. Wife stated that hers was the best she had ever experienced in her life and that's a lot of steak over the years from many of the finest restaurants in the country. Salads were also just a great lead in into the main course. No appetizer or desert..trying to keep the pounds off in 2014. Others around us said the mixed grill appetizer was out of this world and it looked it...I will order it the next time."

  • "I took a lady on a date to the Gamekeeper because I thought it sounded like it may be something special and it surely was. The drive to Blowing Rock and then out in the country was very relaxing and romantic. The fact that this place is out of the way is a plus for me. The restaurant was beautiful and was still decorated for Christmas. The fireplace was very nice. When we walked in my lady's eyes sparkled and I knew I had made the right choice. The food was incredible, in particular the ostrich. Very tender and delicious as was the buffalo, rabbit, boar and crawfish tails we tried. The atmosphere was second to none for being romantic. The place is very nice but not too fancy for nice jeans. Awesome Place!!"

  • "Anyone seeking fine dining off the beaten path I cannot recommend the Gamekeeper enough. Should you go during winter DO NOT sit near the windows. My back was freezing the entire meal"
    Dined on 12/27/2013
  • "I thought the restaurant was very good, but very pricey. You do get somethings unable to find elsewhere, but $44. for ostrich? All the food was good and the setting in the mountains of Blowing Rock is beautiful."
    Dined on 12/28/2013
  • "Let me preface this by saying overall the meal was very good - to start, the drinks were way over-priced. Paying more, doesn't necessarily mean better. They provided cheese bread which was nothing special, Then they ask, if we want balsamic which we said yes to. What was poured was not balsamic, it was red wine vinegar ??!! We opened w/the mixed cheese included 5 cheeses & an attempt @ some squid ink/seawood or something cracker like things. Nice try. We also had the ostrich & risotto both of which were excellent although the risotto was missing(garlic/seasoning? & we ended w/a chocolate dessert that was good. Too me, a place trying to be high end, certainly charging high end prices, but missing the mark."

  • "The Gamekeeper was our main focus this trip. We stumbled upon it June 2013 and returned for my husband's 50th birthday. It is very pricey but well worth it. The service, ambience, and food was excellent. Although we live three hours away, The Gamekeeper is worth traveling for to celebrate special occasions. (There are several excellent lodging options within walking distance of the restaurant.)"

All the staff from the hostess to our server was knowledgeable and extremely friendly and accommodating. The food was fantastic, great attention to detail, nothing was rushed or overlooked."

  • "This was our second trip to The Gamekeeper. It was wonderful the first time and equally wonderful this time. We drove 3 hours, spent $180 for one night in a hotel just to eat at the Gamekeeper again!! The elk will make your eyes roll and leave you speechless because it is SO GOOD. The sampler appetizer was SUPER!! We forgot to order the cheese sampler but it was great the first time!! We will have to take another "ROAD TRIP" soon!! Thanks folks!!"

  • "This is maybe my fourth or fifth time dining at the Game Keeper, and I still have yet to be disappointed by anything. Top-notch, friendly, and knowledgeable waitstaff is always ready and able to answer any questions or make recommendations. Again, I still haven't had a dish in any of my visits that wasn't just unbelievable, side dishes, appetizers and desserts included. The Mixed Grill appetizer is always a highlight, and we get it every time."

  • "Tucked away on the back roads of the high country, Gamekeeper is a great getaway from the norm. Desserts and coffees are to die for (don't miss the bread pudding). Unique entres are fantastic (the Elk was my favorite). Definitely a do-over."
