Diner Reviews
  • "Always will go here when I want to treat friends, coworkers, or clients to place with good food, service, and ambience. Never have had a bad experience."

  • "Chose the Gage for its location and good reviews but I was quite disappointed. Reservations were for dinner at 8:00 on Sunday. Inside was very cold and empty, so we sat outside. Ordered the scallops to start which were delicious - highlight of the evening. Caesar salad was big and bland. Cocktails were good but not great and very expensive. My husband ordered the venison burger but they were out of venison. I asked for a wine list to choose a selection to go with dinner. Then dinner arrived but waitress was nowhere to be seen for more than 5 minutes. No one came to the table to see what was wrong. After that point service was very poor. Waitress was standoffish and cold for the rest of the evening. We left before dessert."

  • "Enjoyed a wonderful, relaxing dinner outside before our show. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and attentive. Everything from the unique cocktails through our shared blueberry/corn ice cream cobbler was delicious and fresh. Will definitely be back."

  • "We were in Chicago for a long weekend and had a local recommend The Gage. We had to get an early reservation, and you could tell the place was very popular with the after-work crowd. I did get the feeling that regulars got preferential treatment (despite reserving several days in advance, our table was way in the back) but that's O.K. I guess. The service was attentive and outstanding and the food was very, very good. I highly recommend the mussels vindaloo and the sausage and cheese plate as appetizers. We'd heard the fish and chips were the best in town, and they didn't disappoint, although I'm not sure they were the "best" I ever had. Will definitely go back again."

  • "Made reservations for 6:30 and told the waiter that we were going to Bank of America Theater for an 8:00 show. Had time for appetizers to dessert. Carrot ravioli was awesome as were the salads, soup, drinks and amazing apricot tart for dessert. Look forward to going again. A little noisy so not very romantic but that is not what we were looking for."

  • "If it's a nice day, sit outdoors; the waist high border of the seating area creates a sense of privacy while still allowing a view of the park."

  • "This was our last meal on a four day vacation and it proved to be the best. I had the roasted elk and it was magnificent. Excellent beer selection. Service was exemplary. If I am in chicago again I would have a few drinks at the bar- it was energetic, decorated nice."

  • "Brought my daughter here for a birthday lunch. We completely enjoyed the outdoor dining right opposite Millenium Park and the very tasty upscale pub food - fried pickles w/aioli, venison burger, smoked salmon half sandwich with cold cucumber soup. I had not mentioned that this was a birthday meal but our server guessed it and brought out a complimentary dessert, which was an excellent surprise. It's definitely pricey but I felt that we got good value for our money."

  • "It is the thrid time I have been there for lunch. The scallop salad is wonderful. The second time I have had it. Cooked to perfection,"

  • "Certain menu items change from day to day, but everything I have had was constructed well by chefs who know what they're doing. The soup of the day is something to look for. Everything made with fresh ingredients; really nice experience. Only flaw: a bit noisy during the lunch rush."

  • "Someone from Chicago recommended the Gage for brunch since we were going to the Art Institute following brunch. We were happy we listened. I had a difficult time choosing. The fish (fish and chips) were the best I've ever had. Just lightly battered, cooked perfectly, and very generous portion."

  • "We dined at The Gage after attending an afternoon theater performance. We sat outside on a beautiful evening and enjoyed a lovely wine from Provence, a cheese fondue that is incredible, and wonderful salads - I had the trout salad and my husband had the chicken Caesar. Top the evening off with one of the tempting desserts and you have a perfect evening."

  • "Great meal. It was an ideal place for me to meet some business associates downtown, close to all of the major hotels. Good food. Better drinks. Great service. I actually was 30 minutes late due to late arriving flight. They sat my party and were patient with us all night despite having a huge wait for those without reservations. I will be back."

  • "We made a reservation a couple of weeks beforehand and were seated promptly. At first glance, we thought it was more of a business lunch place with a limited menu. But after an informative discussion with our server, we easily chose our food. My friend's cantaloupe melon soup was out of this world and was brought to the table by the owner himself (handsome and tall). The scallops were perfectly prepared and cooked. I hesitated ordering my salad and salmon as I try not to order food similar to either the way I cook it or the frequency I eat it at home. The salmon dish was superior to anything I've had before. Scrumptious assorted colored beets with pistachios and ricotta cheese lightly drizzling inside the salad."

  • "Weekends in Chicago mean taking advantage of the cities’ rich history and voluminous local attractions. It is also a tremendous opportunity to escape the kitchen and let someone else do the cooking. While on the hunt for a new handbag, I decided to stop in for lunch at The Gage restaurant. The eatery is happily situated at 24 S. Michigan Avenue, steps away from Grant Park. My full review is at www.enjoybymichele.com"

  • "The food at the Gage, while very good, cannot make up for service that is completely sub-par. Not only did Gage not hold the table I especially reserved - "brunch" leftovers had paid their check, but Gage could not be bothered to ask them to move so our dinner could begin...but also the server was unable to manage our food order appropriately. It took 50 minutes to get the appetizers, then another 30 for the entrees. With theater tickets, we had to leave just 10 minutes after the entrees finally arrived. In the end I spent $160 on a meal I couldn't finish."

  • "At 2pm on a Sunday, I would have liked to see something other than Brunch items on the menu. Otherwise food was very good."

  • "After we were finally seated the experience was fine. However, our hostess did not inform us that she would be texting my phone to tell us our table was ready. So, we lost the table that had been saved for us. By the time we sat down the entree that I wanted to order was no longer available. However our server made up for it with a complimentary dessert. All the food was very good and substantial."

  • "We came in on a busy Sunday to a server, who was clearly being overworked. The food was fine, but might have tasted better if the service improved. When I brought up the service issues to the manager, he asked me if the food was fine. While a fair question, this conveyed that the manager did not understand a restaurant's value proposition. If any element of food, service or ambiance lacking, the restaurant has failed. The restaurant offered a round of drinks on him the next time we came in. It was a moot point as I do not drink nor do I plan to return even though I will be working in the area."

  • "This was a many-times over repeat trip to The Gage. The food, as always, was great. I was just diappointed in the service this trip. Our server, who didn't introduce herself, seemed a bit timid and slow. And I had made a special request and I was not convinced that my request ever really made it to someone in the kitchen who could have helped. I asked her to please just check with the kitchen and when my plate was bought to the table by a runner there was no visit by our server to tell me that my request could not be fulfilled. Not until I had to flag her down for a tea refill I had to ask, her about it. Still a favorite place, but I'll remember next time to ask for a more experienced server."

  • "The Gage has a very interesting menu that accommodates everyone from those who want a Scotch egg, fish and chips or a burger and beer to serious foodies. Its location is great and it is always a hit with out of town guests."

  • "Every time we go to The Gage, we can't stop wondering why we don't go more often! On two occasions, we were headed to the Symphony, and on the other two, staying downtown for the weekend. Lively, great ambiance, delicious good, Gage always delivers! Very much the highlight of our weekend!"

  • "I've dined hear for lunch on many occasions, mostly for business meetings. The food is always great. I wasn't exactly thrilled with the soup served, but the server and restaurant staff were so accommodating and engaging, they definitely made up for it!"

  • "My first time at The Gage will NOT be my last. Outstanding service, high quality, well-prepared food, nice wine selection (sorry I didn't sample the great beer selection), and a really great bar atmosphere. This is a Chicago gem, and I can't wait to return!"

  • "Made a reservation based on reviews. The food is a good as everyone says. Very active bar scene so it's a pretty noisy restaurant but if that doesn't bother you, you must head on over. We loved the food so much that we went a second time during the week we were vacationing in Chicago."

  • "From the Maitre d' to the waiter and busboy, the Gage attends to your every need. They were unflaggingly kind. We requested a change of table due to the noise, and they happily accommodated us, though we had already begun service. Charred green beans with guanciale and lemon were exceptionally brilliant (if salty). The fish special and free-range chicken were moist and delicious, the chicken on a bed of creamy, yummy grits. We were there for hours and never felt rushed (we tipped big). Be aware that this busy restaurant is a popular after-work gathering spot with a noise level off the charts. (We are older but not yet creaky.) And we wish the Gage would offer the option of soy milk with your latte. Overall, a delicious and lovely evening."

  • "We had reservations and went for a special occasion.... Arrived a bit early for our 7:00 o'clock reservation.... horrible experience .... sat on long crowded bench with tables too close together.... VERY loud and uncomfortable environment..... I was unfortunately under the mistaken impression that if I had a reservation, I wouldn't end up in the bar.... I greatly prefer the quieter area in the back of the restaurant. I doubt that we will return to this restaurant..."

  • "I just had another business lunch at The Gage, this week, and again it delivered across the board. Great service, great food, great atmosphere. I never have to worry about bringing clients here, it's very consistent, and they always ask to come back! Thanks for another great business lunch!"

  • "Coming with reservations after a graduation along with an elderly man in a wheel chair . Not only did we get seated right away but the wheel chair did not cause any inconvenience. The staff was superb as was the food and wine. That made the whole experience one we will never forget."

  • "The waitress took a very long time to even come to our table and the service was poor. She didn't come by very often. Although the waitress was helpful choosing the food, she also accidentally put someone elses drink on our tab. Perhaps with a better server, the experience would have been better. Drink prices were expensive, but the food was fresh and delicious."

  • "We go to The Symphony frequently and enjoy everything about this restaurant -- fun cocktails, great service and the food is inventive and so delicious. But be warned, the bar scene can be very loud and boisterous. So if you want a quiet dinner, ask for a seat in the back -- it's very cozy."

  • "We liked Gage but it was soo loud that it was hard to hear each other. We wait long for our dinner and saw our server infrequently. For the cost of the meal--there is a need to upscale the service and reduce the noise level."
