Diner Reviews
  • "I made my reservations the day before we needed the table, not sure why we were seated in the bar area. It was very noisy. The Hostess was very friendly when I asked to be put in the dining room area. We were then seated in the back room with the kitchen, again noisy and hot! Could not understand why we were seated there when there were empty tables in the dining room, which remained empty the entire time we were there. I said in my request for the table that we were celebrating a birthday, it was never acknowledged! Not a raving review for a restaurant across from the Bean! Would not recommend it and will not go back."

  • "Was given Gage as a "must do" while on weekend getaway to Chicago...excellent recommendation. Great dishes, great flavors--and the chocolate peanut butter pie was to die for! A repeat visit next time in town for sure."

  • "Everything about this restaurant was excellent. From the elegant "pretty" looking food to the amazing service. the energy was all positive, not one soul was in a bad mood. Most importantly, she had a good night. I would recommend this for people looking for a late night dinner, on a date, going to get drinks with friends, or even a large upscale party. A Perfect restaurant."

  • "Another great meal at the Gage. The food was presented as beautifully as always and tasted as good as it looked. Although the Halibut en Croute seemed to be missing the en Croute, it was perfectly sautéed and the sauce complimented the fish perfectly. My wife had the chicken which was in a hardy sauce and a great comfort dish done gourmet. Deserts were not too sweet. I had the Cherry Tart which could have used a few more cherries vs. the almond filling, but it was still very good. All in all a great meal."

  • "I love coming to The Gage, excellent food and attentive service in a lively atmosphere. Great location across from Millennium Park, we often bring out of town guests here. First time eating at The Gage for lunch and I really enjoyed it. A good selection of breakfast and lunch items, and a small but creative brunch cocktail selection."

  • "We had a reservation and our flight was delayed. When we called they were very accommodating and we did not arrive until 30 minutes prior to the kitchen closing. The waiter was great and did not make us feel rushed!! He suggested the mussels which were awesome!! My date had the duck (Im not a duck fan so I am not a good judge) I had the venison burger..Fantastic!!!! We also split the beet salad which we both loved! Drinks were perfect and overall I would recommend! The bar area was hopping but there were quiet areas as well so you can choose:)"

  • "Took my husband here for his birthday. We certainly over ate, but every bite was worth it! Our server Wes was fantastic. He really made the experience. Guided us through the menu, but catered to us dining in a small plates sharing type of way. He is a true ambassador of hospitality. I had never had a fried pickled before(call me crazy, I know) and they were awesome. However, the beet salad and the smoked duck were our favs. And don't get me started on dessert! Peanut butter Pie... So smooth and delicious. I'm not typically a review writer but credit was due where it had been earned. Thank you for a great night.... We'll be back."

  • "This place is over the top. It is a must stop for anyone visiting Chicago. Once you get over the noise level, it's a great place. Menu is refreshing and over the top as well. Try the sausage sampler. All I can say is WOW! Do not take kids to the Gage. It's not that it's not kid friendly, the restaurant is more of an adult bar that family restaurant. Service is awesome with some of the most friendly waiters I have encountered in Chicago. Great experience. MAKE RESERVATIONS."

  • "My husband and I made last minute reservations at The Gage and were pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere was nice - upscale pub - and the service was fantastic. My husband had the poutine and mussels. They were both amazing. I had a beet salad and the halibut. Both were very good. We couldn't pass up dessert - pot de creme and corn & blueberries - and didn't regret the extra calories one bit. Overall, a lovely, laid-back evening with very good food."

  • "My husband and I traveled to Chicago this weekend and had a great time. We made reservations for the Gage for the Sunday night and it was a wonderful experience. The staff were welcoming and friendly and we were served promptly. We loved the starter ribs and enjoyed the orginal burger and fish and chips. The food was flavorful and fresh and would definitely go back!"

  • "We enjoyed our dinner the food was delicious. The only issue is parking. It says valet on the website and when we went in the hostess told us to park on the next street over, but when looking for parking, the place they use to validate parking was not clearly marked. We ended up paying a lot more for parking than expected which was not a positive ending to a nice evening."

  • "My husband and I were in Chicago for a work conference. The Gage was recommended by our hotel. We enjoyed a night out together with awesome food and comfortable setting. The fried pickles and scotch eggs were delicious starters. I loved the venison burger--the pickled vegetables and peppers along with the smoky Gouda blended amazingly. Ordering without the bun and a side salad was a satisfying, low-carb option. For venison, the protein was still rich--blended with beef. Wine and beer list offered excellent pairings."

  • "There was an energetic and fun vibe to he restaurant that was very welcoming, yet still felt cozy, the service was attentive and helpful without being overwhelming. We went for dinner but were so interested by the starters and the "Pub Food" sections of the menu that we just had appetizers and thoroughly enjoyed all of them. We had the house made selection of sausages and spreads to start which were fantastic and impossible to pick a favourite. We followed that up with the PBR battered died pickles. These were delicious with the chipotle aioli but were a little greasy near the bottom of the bowl. We followed that up with the seared scallops and pork belly. Amazing! We will go back next time we are in Chicago for sure"

  • "This is my go-to during art museum/park visits to sit outside in summer. Limited but adequate menu. Scallop salad is nice. Not as pricey as museum. Great bar. Street noise drowns conversation at times."

  • "3.5 stars. Been here many times. Went during a very busy lunch. We had a new waitress so she was a bit off yet not bad. The support staff were excellent. My food was great. I had a fresh heirloom tomato salad and the buffalo chicken sandwich. My wife's Caesar salad was good yet her fish and chips weren't great. The fish was a bit over cooked and chewy and it left a fish taste in our mouths for a few hours. The batter on the fish was great and the batter's texture was great. The fish and chips are the reason this lunch didn't get 4+ stars."

  • "This is one of our must spots. Every course is always mouth watering and well presented. The lobster roll for lunch is superb. Good wine selection. Homemade sorbets are some of the best in the city. The Gage mint tea is addicting. The service is exceptional. LOVE IT!"

  • "The Gage is a periodic favorite of mine for taking out of town clients or friends to lunch. It has a small menu, but I have yet to get something I didn't enjoy, and it rotates frequently. The service is usually very good when it comes to timing of orders and delivery of food, including pacing of appetizers/salads vs the main meal. However, they have a tendency to take a hair too long to bring the bill. It's a busy place, so it's forgivable, but that is my main nit to pick. For fans of scotch, they have a very respectable selection, including some varieties that aren't found many other places in Chicago (some Jura drams, for example)."

  • "The Gage was very crowded - a sign of good restaurant. The bar scene was vibrant. We arrived on time and were seated in the dining area right away. The food was excellent and the wine reasonable for Chicago. We had a great time and would go again."

  • "We enjoyed the dinner very much, and the added attention we received when we disclosed it was our 55th wedding anniversary!!! Wow..what treatment with a special desert and after-dinner drink. Next time, I will request seating in the back. We found the noise level too high seated in the bar area; it was a little disturbing. I have a hearing problem and wear hearing aids which amplify the background noise. Friends recommended Gage. We wanted to be near the Palmer House hotel and the park as we had reserved seats for the Grant Park Symphony."

  • "A reservation is recommended at this bustling Michigan Avenue restaurant. It is several places in one- bar, pub, restaurant and outdoor seating. Inside was very loud and super cooled, so we selected outside where the weather was perfect. Great wine and beer list- wide variety- everything we tried by the glass we enjoyed, creative fresh food. Had salad and Fish and Chips."

  • "My friend and I had a very pleasant lunch experience. The food was extremely tasty and the service was excellent. We were accommodated with outside dining though we had not reserved it. We were impressed by the host/owner making certain that a requested brunch drink item was made available to us. The prices were reasonable for the level of food quality."

  • "I dined at The Gage several times before this recent visit. I was raving about the food. On one visit I had a great lobster roll. I've had the poutine with duck which was divine. This time I asked for the lobster roll, but was told it's not available (don't know if this was because it was dinner rather than lunch - it was too noisy to ask). I had the scollops on pork belly. It was just OK: the richness of the pork seemed too heavy for the scollops. My friend had the poutine at my recommendation, but without the duck - not as good as I remembered. The noise level was deafening."

  • "We are at The Gage during a 9 hour layover at O'Hare with our 4 kids. The food was fantastic...the burgers and ribs were a huge hit. We also enjoyed the selection of locally brewed beers. The staff were very friendly and the service was exceptional. We definitely recommend The Gage."

  • "I frequent the Gage often - the food is always good but this visit I received poor service. The waitress brought the wrong beer despite the fact I pointed to the item on the menu and pronounced it clearly. I asked her to return it and bring the correct beer. This took an extremely long time to the point my food had arrived. I had to get another employee to find my server. She come over to the table without the beer. I pointed to my food and indicated it would be nice to have my beer. She just said "oh, it is coming." I would have expected an apology in the form of "comping" the beer or something. Nothing was offered."

  • "Had 4.30 reservation and walked right in at 4.30 and seated straight away, this was so nice as we had time restrictions. Really nice waiter who was helpful and made some good suggestions. Food was really good and the Smoked Trout Salad was wonderful! We will certainly go back to The Gage on future trips to Chicago!"

  • "Went to The Gage for lunch while on a sight seeing trip to Chicago. We started with fried pickles which were delicious. Everyone in the party loved their food (chicken orzo soup, fish and chips, turkey sandwich, & regular burger). We would highly recommend The Gage."

  • "Considering how quickly restaurants cycle through even prime spots in Chicago, the Gage has done an impressive job not just staying open but remaining relevant. They have freshened up their menu since the last time we were here whilst also holding on to traditional well loved staples (Irish Breakfast, Fish + Chips, Scotch Egg). Service as always was courteous without being intrusive, the menu was simple and self explanatory, the food came out quickly including extras ordered during the meal. Coffee and water was topped up frequently, the manager came by to inquire about our satisfaction, all the staff interactions were friendly without being overly familiar. Food was very delicious and portion sizes manageable."
