We were seated at a corner table which made for a quiet ambience which we both appreciated. There were relatively few menu selections clearly reflecting seasonal ingredients availability.
Our entrees, a lamb "porterhouse" for me and a filet steak for my wife were served with very interesting, unusual and very good accompaniments. Also, the menu offered a large and small portion for each entree which I think is an excellent idea. We shared a dessert of a chocolate banana cake which we found to be both unusual and enjoyable.
We will be looking forward to returning to this restaurant when we are in the area again.5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMAnother great night!I have been a patron of the Gables for many years. I always enjoy the ambiance and food. Great proportion of food, not to much. I was able to enjoy everything in moderation. Everything was cooked to perfection.

Roast lamb sandwich was huge and amazing; crab cake sandwich was yummy, but about the size of a "slider." Good desserts. Mac & cheese could have used more cheese! We were pleasantly surprised.
All of the staff were very attentive and friendly. We sat in the bar area which, at lunchtime, was
uncrowded and the ambiance relaxed. We enjoyed the interesting menu and delicious lunch which was well prepared

The carmel desert my friend had needed a scoup of ice cream to cut the sweetness. Our waitress was very nice and very helpful.4/23/2013 12:00:00 AMFoodies+Great Atmosphere=The GablesI appreciated the warm greeting as we entered The Gables for Lunch on a Tuesday afternoon.......I found later that the young girl greeting us was the owner and could not be more impressed of how she spent time checking on all the details for everyone dining. She was very outgoing and welcomed us with ease.
Also, you can tell the waitstaff is happy with the new ownership and changes....its not always easy for them to "go with the flow" of a place changing hands but, it speaks volumes that the staff anticipates success!
The food was fantastic. I do consider myself a foodie!!! I'm fairly new to the Chester County area and born and raised in Phila.; good food has been plentiful, so I've been on the search for exceptional places! The drinks were great. Lots of large groups and a wedding, everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Our food was good. One or two small hiccups on the food side, but we enjoyed most of the meal! We love the atmosphere and the decor. Service was good and so was the food. If I had to nit-pick, my negatives would be that the noise level was really high. My husband was sitting right next to me and I had a tough time hearing him,
There may be tables upstairs; next time I will request one of those. Another thing to improve on: the runner brought over our cheese plate and didnt point out which cheese was what. 4 minutes later,
After we had begun eating, our server came over to describe it to us.

For awhile the service wasn't what it should have been but that is no longer the case. The staff were all friendly informative and there whenever needed.

The consensus was that the food here was extremely good; the crab cakes were ooohed and aaahed over. My husband, who is not easily impressed, said that his burger was cooked perfectly, juicy and flavorful.
The only problem was that there is not a single vegetarian main dish or one that could be made vegetarian on either the lunch or the dinner menu. The group's vegetarian (me) had a bowl of mushroom soup and an order of fries. The mushroom soup was tasty and different from the usual--chunks of sifferent sorts of mushrooms is a semi-clear broth--and very enjoyable. The fries were OK.
Everybody except me said they would return for dinner sometime.2/7/2013 12:00:00 AMWill definately eat there again!We ate at The Gables for dinner Dec 27. Five adults in our group and we all thought the dinner was outstanding. We read some negative reviews about the place losing its ambiance after a remodeling, but could not disagree more. We all loved it. Service was excellent and the food was wonderful. Excellent service for a crowded night during the holidays. Also, our diets range from low sodium through gluten free and all five of us had no problems finding plenty of selections on the menu. Desserts were restaurant made - not store bought - and were also excellent. Thanks for a great meal!12/27/2012 12:00:00 AMA wonderful night at the gables!!My husband and I went to the gables and just loved everything about this wonderful place. The hostess was very welcoming and offered to take our coats and then seated us next to the fire place and told us about the wine list and the winter cocktails they had. I looked the list over and the Barrel aged manh. was the best drink i have ever had our server was fantastic and new the wine list and the dinner menu like the back of his hand. I had the gumbo and it was so good i ordered another one to go, my husband had the sea bass and loved it. After dinner we went to the bar and had a few drinks and talked to the bartender matthew, a very funny young man. we will be back.
