Diner Reviews
  • "I really enjoyed my first dining experience at The Gables. I tried the fried green tomatoes with the goat cheese. I will return again to try more dishes. The wait staff were very friendly ."

  • "This was our second visit and we wanted to take our friends to a place that we thought had good food and a nice ambiance . Our server, Philip, was attentive and our meals were very good. Our friends particularly enjoyed the filet mignon with bacon wrapped asparagus and the lemon and strawberry meringue tart Our table was just inside the front dining room, close to the piano. While we enjoyed the music, at times it did overwhelm a bit. All in all a very enjoyable dining experience, and we definitely will keep it on our list of favorite restaurants to return to when we're next in the area."

  • "We loved the restaurant! It was our first time dining and the food was excellent. The menu is very basic but it has something for everyone. The mushroom soup was amazing. The root vegetable side dish was excellent. The restaurant is very pretty and the service was great."

  • "I recommend this restaurant as a great dining place. Overall, the food was well prepared. The presentation was good. You will love the desserts. The wait staff did a fine job!"

  • "the food was excellent, everything was well prortioned and displayed nicely. waitress attentive. we were at a table that the light was very dim so it was hard to read menu, There was a wedding going on and the noise level made it so we could not hear our own conversation. We would go back but not on a saturday when they have weddings."

  • "The Gables is one of our favorites! From the welcoming staff to the piano in the bar, and great food and atmosphere- you won't be disappointed."

  • "The Gables at Chadds Ford was an interesting place. An old barn that was converted into a restaurant. The decor was nice with the horizontal gas fireplace. The appetizers and entries were very good with a nice presentation. I had a lamb stew that was cooked with a lamb bone however I found a lot of bone pieces in my dish. I asked the waitress if there should be this much bone in my dinner (I piled it up on the side of the dish) she said no and the chef gave me dessert. Oh well glad I didn't choke."

  • "The new owners (now not so new) have done some nice things with the noise (fabric baffles that actually work) and with the menu. If you have been before, it's time for another visit. If you have never been, you will like the homey ambiance of an old cow barn well and fully renovated into a warm, comfortable dining spot. Phillip, our waiter, could not have been more solicitous and professional. He was genuinely concerned that we have a nice experience. This is not so common these days. The deserts, especially, were terrific. The Sticky Toffee Cake is not really sticky and not too sweet. A small bundt cake in a pool of light caramel sauce. The chocolate banana cake is a knock-out if you are a chocolate person."

  • "We always enjoy coming to The Gables for dinner. It's a bit of a ride for us, otherwise we would be there more often. The outside seating in the warmer weather is charming. The bar is adorable and the restaurant is lovely. One thing for sure, though, is the food is always delicious! My husband happened to mention that it was my birthday when he made the reservation so when we arrives the hostess extended birthday wishes. After our meal, we ordered coffee but no dessert as we we're quit full our server brought us a small plate of some fresh berries and whipped cream...a very nice gesture indeed! We really were very full but managed to squeeze in a few berries and cream. it was a very nice dining experience."

  • "one of my favorite places. I love the food presentation, besides the food. I have never been disapointed. I also like the quiet we always eat downstairs."

  • "We had a lovely and romantic dinner. We started with fried calamari , which was great. I had the Chilean sea bass and my husband had the sea scallops. Both were cooked to perfection, wonderfully flavored, and served with delicious sides. The chocolate banana cake was moist and very chocolatey, not too heavy. Portions were well sized , not too big that we were uncomfortable before dessert was even served. The wait staff was attentitive, prompt, and friendly. The atmosphere was rustic with a white chic interior with wood beams and a large brick wall. Very pretty!"

  • "Never having been to The Gables before, it hands-down was one of the best experiences I had ever experienced at a restaurant. Very friendly, welcoming, great hospitality, fantastic food, fantastic atmosphere, and great for a dinner-date. I'd say my favorite restaurant yet."

  • "This is a special day for us, a birthday and a romantic day full of memories. The Gables did not disappoint, the menu, service and ambiance coupled with a nice bottle of wine made for a beautiful evening. The drawback to the evening is the 2nd floor where we dined was rather drafty."

  • "We had a super dinner at Gables for Valentines Day. My husband and I have been dining there for many years. The problem we had was our waiter. Our food was delicious. All of us had steaks. Delmonico or filets. They have a nice wine list. Service on Valentines Day was good except for the fact our waiter wanted us to leave more than take care of us."

  • "Perfect for Valentines Day! We also were there for New Years Eve and had a great time. Just overall very nice."

  • "We both had the pasta special which was a stuffed metzaluna (spelling?) which we both thought was good but did not retain temperature. Vegetables were well cooked and well prepared. Dessert was passable although I thought the cheesecake had too thick a crust. My date had the nectarine martini which she was very happy with. I think the waiter may have been new as he was slow on follow up. Overall we had a nice meal and the pasta was a good value."

  • "The food was great and the service spectacular. Will definitely be going back! There's also a nice space upstairs that would be amazing for private events - e.g. engagement parties or rehearsal dinners."

  • "The Gables provided a very nice evening to celebrate my anniversary with my wife. The warm and friendly atmosphere was complimented nicely by the ample single malt scotch list and dinner wines by the glass or bottle. Our appetizers of oysters and a mushroom tart were well prepared and plated carefully. My wife's Chilean sea bass was excellent as was my own crab cake (5 ounce variety) which was clearly a generous portion of almost all jumbo crab meat. Our Pino Griggio by the glass was clean and well matched to our entrees and quite reasonably priced. The dessert menu was somewhat limited and we passed on it. Service was a tad slow but the waiter was attentive and polite as were the other staff. Water glasses were promptly refilled."

  • "Anniversary dinner at the Gables. A nice menu a good wine list and fair prices makes this restaurant the go to place in southern Delaware County. A seat by the fireplace on a cold night, a glass of wine, good service and comfort food are the right fit for a special dinner. Scallops with pork belly and duck cassoulet are 2 of the dishes on a very eclectic menu."

  • "My mom and I went to the Gables for brunch recently, it was a wonderful dining experience. Our server was polite, friendly, and attentive, and the food was absolutely delicious. Not to mention, the ambiance and decor was beautiful and very cozy. Will definitely be coming back."

  • "I took my husband to The Gables for a birthday lunch on a Friday, it was the first time we had been there. The decor and ambience is wonderful, they had a great spot out back, perfect for an intimate wedding & I'm sure a reception there would be splendid as well. On a Friday at lunch time, there weren't a lot of people, which suited us just fine. We had a table near the fireplace & enjoyed a quiet, romantic, delicious meal without the kids. We look forward to going for dinner soon and trying some of there interesting cocktails!"

  • "The server was clueless and the food was not as good as usual."

  • "The ambience of the Gables is always very nice and the service was very good as usual. We had drinks at the bar prior to dinner and the Bartender Dawn was very nice and engaging. At dinner the service was spot on but the food was less than spectacular. We dine at the Gables quite often and over the last six months the quality of the food has been drifting and hopefully they can bring back the quality that the Gables was always known for in this area."

  • "The mushroom soup is enough to make me go back. Brothy, not creamy; delicious. Entrees have personality and are perfection. The staff from reception to wait were warm, welcoming and attentive. The interior is very pleasant and updated. The whole experience great. I am very critical about everything."

  • "It took forever to get our meal and then when it arrived it was not that good. Food was a combination of overcooked fish and undercooked rice, We were told they had a new chef but I do not know why the customers have to suffer from this."

  • "Food was very good. A bit pricey. Pleasant atmosphere."

  • "We felt very rushed. I know that it was NYE but we pay a pretty penny to go out and enjoy out time. I felt very rushed by our server. Not cool. We own a restaurant a would never want to do that to our patrons. Not cool!"

  • "The Food was good as was the service but when the check came we gave them a prepaid voucher which we purchased and they did not want to take it!!!! I had to get the Manager who acted like she was doing me a favor to accept it. That did not leave me with a very good feeling about the Gables Resturant. My prepaid voucher had NO blackout times!! So why did we get a hard time???? It was undeserved.and left me with a bad feeling."

  • "We ate at the Gables on New Yers Eve, and it was pretty nice. The prices are maybe a little high, but it was a holiday, after all."

  • "The Gables is a charming restaurant with great atmosphere. The food was delicious and I plan to return in the near future. Great spot for a nice dinner or a girl's lunch. You could also stop in for a quick bite. It is very convenient to all the Chadds Ford museums in the area."

  • "We enjoyed our dinner this past Saturday. It is nice that they offer smaller portions. The crabcake that I had was very good - mostly crab meat with little filler. The root vegetable puree was really good. My husband had the wild boar chili as his entree - it was very hearty and delicious. All in all, a very pleasant evening."

  • "Food was very good, but my filet was ordered medium, came out medium rare. Dining room was packed, overall good noise level but a little loud throughout the night, the room has bad acoustics. Ordered the burger, they were out, ended up with filet. Ordered a bottle of wine, they were out, had to find an alternate. I understand the wine issue, but how do you run out of burgers? Anyway - an enjoyable evening given the slight annoyances. Would recommend."

  • "We came to The Gables for Christmas Eve dinner because it was highly recommended by several people. We were told that it was really fancy and very expensive...not the case. Now I'm not complaining about the expensive part, but the ambiance and food left something to be desired. I had the lobster, and it was good. Not great, but good. We got all dressed up and it was quite casual. Not what I was expecting with all the hype when we had had so many great meals at other places that week. All in all, good, but not great."

  • "We finished our Longwood Gardens Christmas with a very satisfying dinner at the Gables. My partner and I shared an exceptional scallop and pork belly appetizer. We both opted for Duck Cassolet which was a deconstructed dish and quite a surprise presentation. I especially liked the parsnips,; the duck was pink and delicious, and the white bean and pork component brought all the flavors together. We shared a bottle of Chilean vigonier that was very much to our liking and reasonably priced. We are often in this part of Chester County and will surely consider dining at the Gables in the future."

  • "We had hoped for a special holiday dinner after touring Longwood, but were really disappointed in the food. The 8 oz. lamb stew had about 3 pieces of meat -- it's the first dish I've ever seen my husband return; the pasta special which was supposed to include artichokes and shrimp was also very disappointing -- 3 shrimp and no artichokes with overcooked pasta. Unfortunately, will not return...."
