Located at the top of the lobby’s grand staircase in the historic mirrored Versailles Room, this elegant restaurant focuses on market-driven interpretations of classic French bistro fare. French Kitchen serves lunch and dinner, as well as special holiday meals. French-trained Executive Chef Michael Carstens leads the culinary team, bringing a keen contemporary eye to his dishes. Pastry chef Donna Simmonds oversees all house-baked breakfast items, as well as all the bread we serve, and the French Kitchen’s contemporary French dessert menu.Continued

  • "The French Kitchen is located in the Lord Baltimore Hotel, a grand old dame that has been refurbished and looks wonderful. The ambience and decor of the lobby and dining room are nothing short of old-world beautiful with modern lighting. The room was large with high ceilings, gold leaf molding and curtained windows. Our waitress was friendly, courteous, knowledgeable and caring. The manager and chef visited to make sure that the food and service met expectations. We ordered wine, soup, salad, veal, crab and scallops. The wine, a dry Malbec, was delightful with our various seafood and meat dishes. Aside from the fine restaurant, the hotel features valet parking, live piano, bar and a comptoir that were welcoming."

  • "It had been many years since I had been in this dining room. They made a large open room feel cozy while you can still "people watch." The servers were attentive and relaxed. The fruit soup was wonderful for a summer afternoon and the quiche was light and tasty. It was a great place to have lunch with a friend and would be nice for a romantic dinner."

  • "This French restaurant is located in the most beautiful space in Baltimore. Its food has some highs (roasted bone marrow) and lows (lamb chops with excessive fat). What the restaurant really needs, however, is a trained professional staff of greeters and servers. Its servers are young and to be fair, attentive, but they lack the experience and training one expects of a staff of a higher end French restaurant. The ambiance alone deserves another visit but it will not occur until later in the year. Hopefully, by then, the sophistication of the serving staff will be up to the level of the setting and food."

Highly recommend starting at the Hotel's Bar first, the Diamondback is a great precursor to your dining experience. On your way out try the French bakery goods for the next day, excellent variety.   • "The onion soup had only a piece of bread with some cheese on it instead of a crust of cheese, the profiterols had the ice cream OUTSIDE of the pasterie and the coq au vin had no "vin"? very untraditional French fare"

  • "We went during restaurant week and everything was delicious. My only gripe was that the dessert, Chocolate Pot de Creme was so sweet and rich that I couldn't eat it all. The staff was very attentive and cared about us having a wonderful dining experience. The chef even came out and asked how our meal was. Very good, give it a try!!"

  • "We had a great Restaurant Week feast at the French Kitchen. The food was superb. The service was even better. Our server, Mina, fluent in English and French, was very attentive. Chef Kevin came out and answered our questions about one of the menu items. He then gave us a tour d'horizon of his approach to French cuisine and his warranty that everything that comes out of the kitchen will be fresh and creative. We will definitely return and urge our friends to come down town and eat great French food in a royal banquet hall (but relatively quiet) environment."

  • "I read the early reviews about bad service, etc. but later reviews sounded good so we decided to dine here. We arrived and the restaurant was not busy. It was a Saturday night so that was a bit troubling. We sat and it was almost 5 minutes before anyone brought water and menus. The length of delay between courses was way too long and the waiter for the most part couldn't be found. The host was so busy serving bread and water to tables he didn't notice what was going on and we couldn't get his attention either. Drinks from the bar were not consistent. Overall not a good experience. While the food was good, we expect a lot more from a restaurant when we dine out."

  • "I took my husband to The French Kitchen to celebrate his 84th birthday. Neither of us had ever been there before. The room is exquisite; we felt as though we were in the restaurant at the Musee d'Orsay in Paris. The service was excellent--caring but not suffocating. We liked the small menu because it made choosing easier. My husband had the steak tartare, which he thoroughly enjoyed, and he also had the onion soup, which he also liked. I ordered the steak frites, which were quite good. Do save room for desserts. We appreciated the peaceful environment because we could visit. Also, the chairs are most comfortable. It was especially nice that the chef came out and asked us how we liked our dinner. We plan to become regulars."

  • "I must say I was very impressed by this place. I read some good reviews online but was blown away by the service and the food, from appetizers to dessert. The manager and chef even came out to ask how our food was, which was a first in my entire restaurant dining experience. The ambience was nice and relaxing and a perfect fit for our romantic evening. I knew the food would be delicious but I have to say that the canard and the Danish bread pudding were some of the tastiest dishes I've ever tasted. I feel like this place should be a lot busier but due to location and being inside a hotel it was fairly quiet and the noise level was low, but I highly recommend this place to anyone who enjoys great food and desires a lovely evening"

  • "This was our first visit to the French Kitchen. The food was good -- we ordered charcuterie and onion soup for appetizers. The Main dish was Canard and Steak Frites. For dessert we had a pistachio Creme Brule. We enjoyed the food. and martini drinks. Service was good."

  • "The Lord Baltimore Hotel seems dark and frankly a little uninviting in the lobby area. However, the Restaurant is bright, airy, quiet and comfortable. It is like stepping into another planet. While the menu is small, what they do, they do really well. We had a group of 6 and everyone loved their meals. I ordered a entree' size of their tartare. Very good! Wine list had a couple hidden deals...nice list overall. I'd go back again. The waiter from NJ did a bang up job as well... "

  • "Our dinner was very pleasant. They have done a good job of rehabilitating the lobby and dining room of the Lord Baltimore hotel. Food was excellent, the ambience is upscale and the service very attentive and helpful. The dining room was very quiet, but there were only two other tables on this Thursday evening. Highly recommend adding it to one's list of downtown Baltimore restaurants."

  • "The four of us had excellent food, great service in a fabulous setting. The fish of the day, I believe was wreckfish, and was the best fish dish I've had in Baltimore in a long long time. Hope soon they will open for Sunday brunch. My dinner party had read all of the mixed online reviews, and we each said we will return soon."

  • "We were underwhelmed unfortunately. Olives weren't very good. Salad Niçoise was lovely looking but too spare to serve as an entree. Beer choices were far too conventional. Room is beautiful but felt a bit like a lounge more than a restaurant."

  • "Recently, we made our second visit to the French Kitchen, reconfirming that this new restaurant will be an important addition to Baltimore dining, if they get their act together. On both visits, we were served by very nice but very green wait staff. And on our recent visit, with only about five tables occupied, the pacing of our meal was inexplicably slow. I finally mentioned it to the hostess; our entrees arrived shortly after; (The Arctic Char was really fantastic.); and we were given free dessert. I hope Baltimoreans and visitors will give The French Kitchen a try; and I hope the kitchen gets its act together. BTW, the tables are spaced nicely apart, and it is not a loud space. Easy to hold a conversation without shouting."

  • "We were initially very excited to dine at the restaurant, but were quickly disappointed. We were expecting a fine dining experience, but found ourselves in an environment I could only liken to a chain-like hotel diner. The service was horrible. The bread was stale. We asked for French bread and were handed faccacia. Then after 45 mins we were told the chef was not comfortable serving bread he thought was stale. The waitress described our salad as luscious with various fresh vegetables and what we got was a plate of greens with 10 peas. Our dinner was no better, the fish was so-so and the chicken was salty and dry. We were vastly disappointed. The desserts sounded horrible and there were no little french like pastries."

  • "This was our first visit to the restaurant. The room is absolutely lovely and the wait staff was friendly and accommodating. We would have preferred a white table cloth in this setting, but cannot argue with contemporary customs. The food was exceptional and worth returning for. The only thing that really ruined this dining experience was the lack of dimmage on the gorgeous crystal chandeliers. The rest of the lighting was at appropriate levels, but a couple of wall sconces and chandeliers could not be dimmed. We think lighting is one of the most important aspects of a dining experience and the bright lights felt like the interrogation room at central booking (not that I've actually been there). Very distracting. "

It was obvious that the ingredients were fresh and the chef creative with an emphasis on taste as well as presentation. The dining room is gorgeous and our server was knowledgeable and paid just the right amount of attention to us."

  • "When we arrived for a 1 pm weekday lunch the place was eerily quiet and almost empty. It is a big, flamboyant room with high ceilings and vivid. colors splashed about. It took a while to be seated and served, but once he discovered us our waiter was attentive and charming. The menu was limited to 5 - 6 entrees. I had steak frites, elegantly prepared , and my partner had a lovely warm scallop dish. Still new, the restaurant fills up at night, we were told. We will go back to see."

  • "The French Kitchen is a newly remodeled space in the Lord Baltimore and it is really beautiful....it feels special without being uptight. The menu was varied and delicious and not trying so hard to be trendy. We have been to several restaurants recently (including many of the "in" list) and this is the one we would return to first."
