Diner Reviews
  • "If you're looking for a hidden gem in Middleburg, the French Hound is it! It's a restored home, one block off the main drag. The restaurant is well preserved, clean, furnished attractively. They have a menu that will please most any diner, even though there are a limited number of choices in each category. The food and service are consistently very good to excellent. Portions are moderately generous. Some stand outs are the mussels and Escargot, The French fries are thin and slightly crisp, without being dry (Just the way I like them.) The best part is for Middleburg, the prices are very reasonable. Try it for a midday brunch. It's quiet and very relaxing."

  • "Birthday brunch on a Sunday. While not a large menu, there are great choices and specials, including brunch items. My husband had the muscles as an appetizer and the special scallops with risotto. I had the crème of cauliflower soup and the beef French dip (that came with some of the best thin fries I've ever had. We shared the sorbets for dessert (the hibiscus was the best!) The rooms are small and quaint. VERY reasonably priced. Only thing that was a bit strange was the white paper layed over the tablecloth."

  • "Booked a party of 8 here to celebrate my father's 80th birthday and everything was PERFECT!! It's as if we had whipped him off to Paris for lunch for the day without suffering jet lag!. The Chef/Owner does an amazing job. A perfect menu, top notch charming service, a great location, perfect décor - it just doesn't get better than this. The location is smack in the middle of where all my siblings live here in Virginia, so I see this as definitely becoming our go to place for all those special family gatherings. We'll definitely be back!! It really felt like an afternoon in Paris - but, better because we all know Virginia, southern hospitality out does the French any day!!"

  • "I made a reservation for a birthday luncheon for my friend at least a week ahead (neither one of us had been before) and when arrived was seated in the bar area, although it appeared there were tables empty in a more pleasant location, and experienced a noisy lunch. We both found the food and service very good."

  • "The French hound has the look and feel of a true French restaurant in the Virginia hunt country. The dishes are well put together and a wonderful diversion from the usual fare of the normal."

  • "We liked the location of the restaurant and the attention of the staff. Our waitresses described the specials with enthusiasm and when we tried them they lived up to the hype. Everything was tasty."

  • "Our experience on this special occasion was just average. Arrived 30 minutes before our reservation time and was escorted to the bar where we enhjoyed several drinks as the host forgot about us and had to go find him to ask if our table was ready. The the service was marginal with having to ask for bread plates which took a long tiome and continiously having to find the waiter each time we needed additional food and drink. The food was not exceptional as we remembered from our lunch visit several months back. Maybe I am being to critical but when you pay $200 for dinner for two you expect A+ treatement and food. We will not go back for dionner"

  • "We heard about French Hound from some friends and wanted to try it for out anniversary. We had a great meal and a marvelous dessert of poached pears. Everything was wonderful! We started with beat and goat cheese salad and my husband had the escargot. The bread was perfect and fresh from the oven. I ordered the swordfish and my husband ordered the filet special. The entire meal was superb."

  • "Charming spot and a menu with a variety of options. Our party had salads to start and the vinaigrette was wonderful , plus the french bread was crusty and delicious. The entrees were mixed, some good but not great. The shrimp pizza was particularly bland. However, I would go again as we may not have selected the best options and I love the spot."

  • "We were passing thru Middlesburg on a short trip and wanted a nice place for lunch. Saw this restaurant on a website and made reservations. We were early and they seated us promptly. Waiter was great in telling us the specials, what he recommended, wine selection, etc. Relaxed but well take care of. Hanger steak was excellent, crab appetizer was really good.. If we ever come thru this way again we would like to try other items on the menu."

  • "Whenever we come to Middleburg we plan to make it to The French Hound. Always great food and the atmosphere of a French country restaurant. The house and decor is perfect. They always have wonderful specials and the mini fresh baked baguette is very good. Do try to get your reservations in early as they do tend to fill up on the weekend time slots."

  • "I am a true Parisian and it has taken me quite some time to find a good French restaurant in the area. The French Hound has won my heart! I like its casual setting, no pretention to be fancy, yet, finding a food quality to please the taste buds of food lovers like me. I recommend "les escargots" (of course!), Bouillabaisse, a special fish dish if it is on the menu (seasonal) or a steak frites with red wine (the Cotes du Rhone was excellent and I had with me an expert, who had worked at La Societe des Vins de France for more than 25 years). Please do not miss this establishment. Chef John, congratulations to you and your team of chefs."

  • "We were early for our reservation, there was a table available in the bar, but not to our liking. We opted to wait the 20 mins until our reserved table was ready. We watched may locals come in and they were seated immediately. The reserved time for us came and went, ten mins after our reserved time we were seated. So far not a good first impression. Our waiter Dante came over and quickly took our order, he was very attentive. The food was wonderful and even with the crowd we were not rushed. If you don't mind the wait it was worth it."
