A word from The Fort
Situated in the Red Rocks country 17 miles southwest of Denver on Hwy 285, The Fort is a true replica of Bent's Fort, the first American community west of the Missississippi & rendezvous of Kit Carson & other "Mountain Men". The nine dining rooms, seating 350, are white plastered over adobe. Unusual but hearty dishes, typical of the early West, are provided from open grills. Waugh!Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "I was intrigued by the history of the place. It was kinda hokey. Very expensive and average."

  • "This is a novelty theme restaurant based on a re-created fort. The food is expensive and good--but just good and nothing special."
    Dined on 7/8/2014
  • "!Sherrill provided us with great service and the food was outstanding - filet and ancho chile/orange duck breasts. All simply wonderful."

  • "Wedding anniversary made even more special after a great night at The Fort!"

  • "Still a little pricey, but so much fun! Good menu and service was great! We brought family from out of town and they loved the atmosphere and the views."

  • "We had guests from overseas; not only did The Fort provide a wonderful meal, but they had a translated menu and put the national flag on the table. The guests were very gratified and The Fort made our experience very special for their last night in the US. In addition, we had one guest with mobility issues (uses a cane) and they were very helpful and accommodating. We plan to return soon, when we can relax!"

  • "This is a great restaurant for entertaining guests from out of town. Gives a flavor that is unequaled in the Denver metro area. Our guests were quite overwhelmed by the food, the ambience and the service. Service was really outstanding, meeting our every request for explanation of menu items. Highly recommend the Fort. Wahhh"

  • "It was quite a drive from Colorado Springs, but worth the trip. Every since the Craftwood Inn closed in Manitou Springs, we've searched for a comparable restaurant. The Fort is a restaurant we'll return to when we're in the mood for good food and drink."
    Dined on 7/6/2014
  • "This restaurant was a very pleasant surprise. I found it on reviews on trip adviser and did not know what to expect. It was very nice. One thing I would change is to give entree menu with the appetizer menu. It's unsettling and ends up ordering too much food."
    Dined on 7/6/2014
  • "For a restaurant to put on their menu what each degree of doneness means you would think that your meat would come out as you ordered it. I ordered mine medium and it came out between rare and medium rare."

  • "WE ENJOYED THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE!! GREAT FOOD BUT MOST IMPORTANT THE SERVICE BY OUR WAITER ANDJOE AND HIS STAFF AND THE ASST MANAGER,I FORGOT HIS NAME THEY ALL MADE OUR 50TH ANNIVERSARY ONE TO REMEMBER!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THT FORT TO ANYONE WHO WANTS A GREAT NIGHT OUT!!!"

  • "We were here with out of town guests for an 8:00 pm reservation. We were seated by the wall near the exit/entry and had to ask to be moved. The water is salty (it is well water), the food was totally mediocre and over priced for what it was. One of our dishes was so spicy that we had to send it back. Guacamole and salads were good. The restaurant feels old and dirty inside. Our server was unenthusiastic and seemed tired. I had never been here before and will not be going back for dinner. I would however go back for drinks and appetizers and request to sit outside in the evening."

  • "The food is overpriced. You are paying for the atmosphere for sure. The elk was very good but not worth $48.00 per dinner. The chairs are very uncomfortable. The chairs limit the time spent dining as they eventually fatigue the back. Waitress was a bit annoying coming by to fill the water glasses that were almost full. Soup was almost cold."

  • "HORRIBLE SERVICE! OUR WAITRESS WAS EXTEMELY RUDE. THE FOOD WAS HORRIBLE AS WELL."

  • "This was an anniversary dinner. We will do this again! We will recommend and we will bring family and friends."

  • "It's a unique place and a Denver institution, which everyone should experience. However, I think it has seen better days. The service is very good, but the selection of beef is limited, and the steaks are something you can find in any number of chain steakhouses."
    Dined on 7/4/2014
  • "It is a good special occasion restaurant in a nice setting. The menu is smaller than in the past and food is OK but not exceptional. Portions are large. It is expensive."
    Dined on 7/2/2014
  • "Excellent place to go for a "historical meal". The Fort is a lovely piece of history and they serve a lovely piece of filet mignon as well."

  • "I have been going to the Fort since the 60's as a child. I always take visitors from out of state and my family has had many holiday reunions through out the years. I'm never disappointed with the service food or view. I will keep going back until I no longer am able creating more memories."

  • "We heard The Fort was great so we tried it. Our steaks were good but the rest was less than adequate. For $40+ per plate we expected outstanding in all respects. Don't let the white table cloth fool you. The room was noisy and the great view could only be seen from outside. The the Happy Birthday drum complete with CHEESY animal skin cap was just sad. We will never go here again."

  • "It's a touristy restaurant with beautiful views. Mediocre food. Uncomfortable seating. Limited menu if you are not a wild game fan. Avoid the vegetarian option at all costs."

  • "We were very disappointed in the quality of food. My daughter got the kid's buffalo ribs and they were awful. Gave them to our dogs who loved them. I had quail and it was extremely overcooked. My husband had a wonderful buffalo steak and our other daughter got a buffalo burger which was also good. We are Connoisseurs of buffalo and were hoping to get the ribs better than any I have ever tried to make. Mine were better than the Forts, but still not very good. Our dogs loved them too. Just thinking buffalo ribs aren't really easy to make and get to taste good. However, the quail wasn't good either."

  • "Sadly it seems that the food and service at The Fort have gone downhill in the last few years. I have visited several times and with each passing visit it seems that the tastiness and presentation of the dishes declines. When you are paying close to $50 for a bison steak one would expect an outstanding experience yet our steaks were poorly seasoned, tough, and lackluster. The side of roasted Fort potatoes was pitiful, three small fingerling potatoes with some seasoning and the three asparagus spears were every bit as dismal. After several years of wonderful dining I'm afraid this was my last trip to The Fort."

  • "Great staff, great ambiance, mediocre food but still an enjoyable time."

  • "The Fort was a unique place to have dinner. I thought the meal itself was very good but over priced. The older gentleman that walks around was sneaks up on you asking how your meal is a little creepy to me. He needs to smile more."

  • "We have been dining at The Fort since the early 70's, and it does not disappoint in terms of location, ambience, wonderful staff, and a most unusual menu. This was our anniversary, and we decided to return for this special event. I requested--and we received--a table by the window and its fantastic view. The meal was all we'd hoped for, with only two exceptions: the bartender needs to look up a recipe for mint julep: a glass of ice with three shots of bourbon and some mint leaves does not cut it. Too much alcohol in the cocktail left no room for wine! Also, note to pastry chef: A creme brûlée, by definition, should have the 1/2 inch layer of sugar "burned" not lying loose on the cream. That was disappointing."

  • "I took my parents to the Fort to celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary. We had a wonderful dinner. Interesting and tasty appetizers, very good entrees and a nice desert. Portions were appropriate and flavors were all good. This was our first time to the Fort, but it won't be the last."

  • "We ate here for my husband's Birthday dinner. We love a good steak, especially Bison. The view is great, the quality of the meat is excellent and was cooked to my requested medium-rare perfection. There was not one complaint about the quality of the food and how it was prepared. My husband got the manliest drink on the menu that featured bourbon, gun powder, tobacco, etc. For appetizers we got the bone marrow and rocky mountain oysters. The bone marrow was tasty, but not my cup of tea due to the texture. They let you pick any dessert off the menu for the complimentary birthday desert. They also brought out a bison hat with horns for my husband to wear while we saluted him. They even took a picture and gave it to us."

  • "Service was wonderful as always. We appreciated all the attention to detail. Food was so so this time. Hubby had tamal dish and didn't quite have a robust flavor. My medium well filet was well and the Mac n cheese was noodles with a pound of butter. Bummed about these choices but the potatoes, salad and beet soup were fantastic! We were very touched by the complementary anniversary dessert, the trapper with a great sense of humor and the beautiful flute music."

  • "Always special but maybe the best it's been for food and service ever!"

  • "This was our first dining experience at The Fort and the meal, service and view were outstanding. We started at 5:30 and had drinks and appetizer, then the buffalo fillet and rib eye and shared one dessert. And the window table allowed us to watch the most amazing rain, hail and lightening storm followed by a double rainbow! All of that ended in time for us to get to our seats at Red Rocks for the James Taylor concert by 8:25 and JT came on at 8:30. We will be back!"

  • "I had never been to The Fort but received a gift card and decided to use it. My husband and I had a lovely time and really enjoyed everything about our visit. We plan to go again and will recommend it to our friends."

  • "We were given a gift card for our 50thanniversary. It was our first visit and would definitely come again. It was great and love the cook book I got."

  • "I have lived in Colorado all my life, yet this is the first time I have been to the Fort, why did I wait so long?"

  • "Too bad they either didn't read my request or ignored it. Needed a quiet table to discuss business. They put us next to a group of 10 in the most open and noisy area possible. The OpenTable rating system does not have an appropriate way to "rate" noise level. All ratings are positive or do not recall. None of which are always applicable."

  • "Truly a one-of-a-kind establishment! The service was friendly, accommodating, and impeccable. The menu offers an excellent mix of the unique and mainstream, served in generous portions. The western decor is fascinating for out-of-towners. I enjoyed a unique, ginger-infused white sangria. Desserts are delectable, and the establishment serves locally produced McGill ice cream: yum!"

  • "Took a new visitor to Denver to the Fort for dinner. She hasn't stopped talking about the food and the whole experience. The food is always great and the site very impressive. She said she would come back just to eat there again."
