A word from The Fort
Situated in the Red Rocks country 17 miles southwest of Denver on Hwy 285, The Fort is a true replica of Bent's Fort, the first American community west of the Missississippi & rendezvous of Kit Carson & other "Mountain Men". The nine dining rooms, seating 350, are white plastered over adobe. Unusual but hearty dishes, typical of the early West, are provided from open grills. Waugh!Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Here's what I'll say about The Fort: they know meat. We went for a night out with "the kids" (6 of us), and they were able to accommodate us easily. They only hand you the drink/appetizer menu to start (smart sales tactic on their part), which makes you feel pressured to get something. We started with the sausage sampler, which was delicious. For entrees, we had a mix of game across the board, and the general consensus was that the meats were all very good and the sides were pretty lackluster. Don't bother subbing the mac & cheese for the potatoes. The theme is pretty kitschy, but the service was excellent, and for a tourist trap, the food was pretty decent. You can have better food for much cheaper, though, at other spots in Denver."

  • "We had a great experience! We met the general manager who gave us a grand tour of The Fort. What a treat. We sat out on the patio and had a wonderful romantic evening!"

  • "We love coming to the Fort, we have probably been there a dozen times over our 19 years here. This time we brought friends who had never been there before and they loved it. Wonderful staff, excellent food, a good time had by all of our group of 8. As always the Game Plate was a big hit. The Bison filet was the tenderest ever."

  • "Appetizers on the patio are fantastic. Don't pass it up."

  • "Though the meat wasn't quite as tasty as we expected, the total experience was wonderful. A great birthday celebration for the two of us."

  • "We took our friends who were new to Denver to the Fort and they loved the ambience, the history and the menu. We had very attentive and timely service and the food was delicious and beautifully cooked. A great introduction to Denver! Thank you."

  • "First time back in many years. Not as perfect I remembered it. Food was mediocre and service, while friendly, was slow and spotty. I may try it one more time but I would not go to far out of my way to get there."

  • "There were six in our group and we were celebrating three birthdays. Drinks, appetizers and meals were all great, and the service was excellent. Our complimentary desserts were wonderful too! A great time was had by all and we look forward to another visit."

  • "The service to start with as terrible, no one would come wait on us So I ask a Bus person to take our drink order of a bottle of wine Then the witness came and told me that She was the waitress I said I am the customer, she was very snippy But as the evening went on she was nicer All was pretty good and I left her a 20% tip"

  • "We went to The Fort for our anniversary and had a lovely time. The food was unique and the atmosphere was very nice."

  • "To tell you the truth a bacon wrapped fillet mignon from Walmart taste much better than yours and it's only $6.99 for 2 while yours was $43 for 1 and 6 asparagus. The mai tai I mean the last round up was good but again the price was ridiculous."

  • "Looking for a secluded and quiet place to have a dinner and conversation while enjoying great game meats or other well prepared foods? Close to Red Rocks, The Fort is a wonderful place to have a nice, quiet, romantic, scenic, candlelit dinner. They aren't late night and they aren't lunch - they do one thing very well... serve a well prepared meal with attentive staff and rustic appeal at a mid-1800s replica trading fort."

  • "Very nice views and excellent meat dishes [Bison, Elk]. Interesting and historical setting. It's a bit pricey for me to go too often, but for birthdays and anniversaries, it is my new favorite."

  • "I always get the buffalo, and, as usual, it was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. We didn't get as close to the windows as I requested - but the food and service were wonderful - Huzzah!"

  • "The Fort would be a nice fine dining experience anywhere. The frontier themed menu is classic, and for the most part well executed. Some dishes are fairly unique as well. However, the location and decor make it more of a special occasion place. Great place to take friends new to Denver, or celebrate. Slightly crowded dining rooms, higher noise levels, and an interesting birthday ceremony make it less comfortable for a romantic dinner."

  • "I ordered the elk chops in huckleberry sauce, and ordered them medium rare. One chop was perfect, but the other was cold in the middle. In addition, another member of my party ordered her beef well done, and it was very red in the middle. The server credited half my chops order without prompting, and I appreciated it, but it was the first time dining there for our friends, and they seemed unimpressed, which made me sad since it's my favorite restaurant."

  • "The Fort never fails to impress me. The food is spectacular, the service is great, and the atmosphere is perfect. This is one of my all time favorite restaurants that never fails me. We bring people and out of town guests here when possible."

  • "We are new to CO and someone suggested The Fort for the scenic views and unique food and they were right! The whole experience was amazing! The servers were on top of everything, not too pushy and very knowledgeable. The food was super unique and the taste was, well it was just crazy good! We spent a lot of money but we had a few drinks and a bottle of wine. but to have drinks, app, dinner for two it was around $200 and worth it, this coming from someone who doesn't spend more than $20 a plate traditionally."

  • "At first glance you might be tempted to pass this restaurant by without so much as a thought of stopping. And should you be there when the doors open, you might find the little bit of theatrics cute or a but campy, but once inside you will find a rustic ally charming restaurant that is sure to provide a memorable experience regardless the reason you chose to go there. The views, the service, and the food all combine to make it a very enjoyable experience!"

  • "The setting is rich with the feel of the West. A unique place to take someone to experience the beauty of the mountains, as well as enjoying food that was inspired by this part of the country."

  • "I was intrigued by the history of the place. It was kinda hokey. Very expensive and average."

  • "We chose to spend our anniversary dinner at The Fort, and there was quite a mix of people there. We didn't stand out dressed to the nines though. It's a little expensive, but the food is completely worth it. The game plate was delicious and we went home with leftovers that were good again for lunch. The drinks are wonderful and not too common so it's a treat. And at the end, we had our stiff coffee and tea on the patio with a gorgeous view. Free dessert is a good reason to celebrate there too as it was different and delicious! Highly recommend!"

  • "This is a novelty theme restaurant based on a re-created fort. The food is expensive and good--but just good and nothing special."

  • "We had guests from overseas; not only did The Fort provide a wonderful meal, but they had a translated menu and put the national flag on the table. The guests were very gratified and The Fort made our experience very special for their last night in the US. In addition, we had one guest with mobility issues (uses a cane) and they were very helpful and accommodating. We plan to return soon, when we can relax!"

  • "This restaurant was a very pleasant surprise. I found it on reviews on trip adviser and did not know what to expect. It was very nice. One thing I would change is to give entree menu with the appetizer menu. It's unsettling and ends up ordering too much food."
    Dined on 7/6/2014
  • "Still a little pricey, but so much fun! Good menu and service was great! We brought family from out of town and they loved the atmosphere and the views."

  • "It was quite a drive from Colorado Springs, but worth the trip. Every since the Craftwood Inn closed in Manitou Springs, we've searched for a comparable restaurant. The Fort is a restaurant we'll return to when we're in the mood for good food and drink."

  • "We were here with out of town guests for an 8:00 pm reservation. We were seated by the wall near the exit/entry and had to ask to be moved. The water is salty (it is well water), the food was totally mediocre and over priced for what it was. One of our dishes was so spicy that we had to send it back. Guacamole and salads were good. The restaurant feels old and dirty inside. Our server was unenthusiastic and seemed tired. I had never been here before and will not be going back for dinner. I would however go back for drinks and appetizers and request to sit outside in the evening."

  • "This is a great restaurant for entertaining guests from out of town. Gives a flavor that is unequaled in the Denver metro area. Our guests were quite overwhelmed by the food, the ambience and the service. Service was really outstanding, meeting our every request for explanation of menu items. Highly recommend the Fort. Wahhh"

  • "WE ENJOYED THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE!! GREAT FOOD BUT MOST IMPORTANT THE SERVICE BY OUR WAITER ANDJOE AND HIS STAFF AND THE ASST MANAGER,I FORGOT HIS NAME THEY ALL MADE OUR 50TH ANNIVERSARY ONE TO REMEMBER!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THT FORT TO ANYONE WHO WANTS A GREAT NIGHT OUT!!!"

  • "The food is overpriced. You are paying for the atmosphere for sure. The elk was very good but not worth $48.00 per dinner. The chairs are very uncomfortable. The chairs limit the time spent dining as they eventually fatigue the back. Waitress was a bit annoying coming by to fill the water glasses that were almost full. Soup was almost cold."

  • "HORRIBLE SERVICE! OUR WAITRESS WAS EXTEMELY RUDE. THE FOOD WAS HORRIBLE AS WELL."

  • "For a restaurant to put on their menu what each degree of doneness means you would think that your meat would come out as you ordered it. I ordered mine medium and it came out between rare and medium rare."
    Dined on 7/4/2014
  • "It's a unique place and a Denver institution, which everyone should experience. However, I think it has seen better days. The service is very good, but the selection of beef is limited, and the steaks are something you can find in any number of chain steakhouses."
    Dined on 7/4/2014
  • "This was an anniversary dinner. We will do this again! We will recommend and we will bring family and friends."
    Dined on 7/4/2014
  • "It is a good special occasion restaurant in a nice setting. The menu is smaller than in the past and food is OK but not exceptional. Portions are large. It is expensive."

  • "Excellent place to go for a "historical meal". The Fort is a lovely piece of history and they serve a lovely piece of filet mignon as well."

  • "I have been going to the Fort since the 60's as a child. I always take visitors from out of state and my family has had many holiday reunions through out the years. I'm never disappointed with the service food or view. I will keep going back until I no longer am able creating more memories."
