Diner Reviews
  • "This had been my favorite restaurant in Baltimore, now moving back to Ohio and need to find a restaurant like this one. The food was always great and the staff was always friendly."

  • "The meal was good. The service was good but rushed, which did not create a relaxed dining experience. The tables are very close together and the restaurant is loud - but it is a cool and fun restaurant and I would go back."

  • "Fun, relaxed atmosphere that was perfect for brunch on a sunny weekend morning. Food was great, drinks were appropriately strong as tasty, and the atmosphere just makes you smile. One of my favorite places in Baltimore."

  • "Seafood was not fresh. The restaurant is more trendy than substantial."

  • "This was our second visit. Better than even our high expectations. First, the menu is long, and each item sounded better than the last, so it took us forever to decide. Our waiter was excellent, helpful but not intrusive. We settled on fried oysters and fried green tomatoes as appetizers. Each was wonderful, and soon gone. Rack of lamb, scallops and crab cakes were our mains, each wonderfully prepared. Bread pudding topped it off. We will be back, often!"

  • "Top notch food quality and preparation. Good service. My wife and I had to shout, loudly, in order to communicate. That is not the makings for a pleasant dinner. The noise level is beyond unreasonable."

  • "Absolutely amazing-- the food, the wait staff, the whole experience. Everything was excellent-- truly top notch. The restaurant deserves all of the accolades that they have earned."

  • "Pickled beets great as starter. Branzino best in town."

  • "Another fine meal at The Food Market. Three of us shared many small plates. Fried pickles, gazpacho, lobster fingers, asparagus and more were fabulous. The mussels were the only disappointment. The cocktails were outstanding. Service impeccable."

  • "One hardly expected this rare gem in such a working class neighborhood. The service once seated was exceptional. Our 9:45 reservations were not honored until 10:15 and we were refused the guest password. It turned magnificent from there. Don't miss the pork bellies. Great menu selections let your waiter guide you!"

  • "Certainly there is a huge difference between good food and GREAT food. Without question, this restaurant has G-R-E-A-T food. There have only been a few restaurants that have reached this status. And I don't mean the very highest price ones. Having the most perfect, fresh, and complementary ingredients makes all the difference in the world. You taste each one separately . I had the fried oysters first, then the Chilean Sea Bass for my Entree. Absolutely fabulous. You gotta go there!!!"

  • "I am not a "foodie" and was a little concerned I would be unhappy with the menu choices. This was not the case. With some assistance from our waiter - Ken - all of my selections proved to be excellent. And everyone else enjoyed their meals as well. The service was among the best I have experienced recently. I am ready to return."

  • "Stopped in for brunch this past weekend. The fresh fruit bowl was exactly that - fresh. Tried the French Toast Dippers with maple cream butter. The butter could have had a more maple flavor but still it was very good. Highly recommend the egg white omelet! Service and timing were excellent. Love this place."

  • "The food was fantastic. Portions were filling, but not absurdly huge like some other brunch places. But, you will not leave hungry. The breakfast wrap was excellent. great service."

  • "My sisterks flight was delayed from Albuerqueque until 9:30 Sunday night. It is almost impossible to find a place with a full dinner menu at 10PM on a Sunday night in Baltimore. So imagine my surprise that not only was a restauurant open but in my neighborhood and one of the best new restaurants in Baltimore - The Food Market. Even at that hour, the food was delicious (I had the duck) and the service prompt and personable. As you can imagine, we closed the place down, but even as we were the last ones there, and the stools were all up on the bar, we were offered dessert without a trace of "hurry up and leave!" (We declined). It might even be better to go to this restaurant late as the noise level when busy can be pretty high."

  • "The ambiance is great but I don't care for the food. This is my second time trying it. For the amount of money, I want to be wowed. There are other places I like a lot better."

  • "The Food Market has a creative and tasty menu with lots of flourishes on the traditional brunch standbys. We had the Crab benedict, which had crab-cakes in an eggs-benedict presentation, as well as the French toast, decadently served with toasted hazelnut and nutella. Everything was delicious and the flavors were well balanced. They have excellent iced coffee options as well. This place is great for brunch, and if planning on going at a popular time, I recommend making a reservation."

  • "Great menu with New American style. Fresh and interesting choices. Everything tasted delicious! Thoroughly enjoyed every bite. The only con this restaurant has is that it is very noisy."
    Dined on 6/28/2014
  • "Great food, but it's very, very noisy. Hard to hear your dinner companions. End up yelling like you're at a club. The food is excellent, though."

  • "Food & service were on point. First time I was there with fewer than 4 people. Husband & I were at a small table, VERY close (as in elbows touched neighbor, who also left his bag on the floor, which my husband tripped over). We had to repeat ourselves many times & just resorted to people watching & sharing food. Server was fantastic, as were support staff. Food was beautifully don, despite having a full house, large parties and a crowd for servers to navigate through. We will be back, but 4 works better than 2. We've also been there with 8 & had a great time."

  • "We dined here as a celebration dinner and wanted to splurge. We got at least two things from each course of the menu, and our server was extremely helpful in describing dishes, ingredients, portion sizes, and in sharing her personal recommendations. The food was beautiful and expertly crafted--from the spiced nuts and cocktails to dessert. Yet even though the food is fine-dining quality, the atmosphere was casual and fun the entire time. Excellent for a splurge--but would have found some reasonable small plates to share for a budget-conscious meal, as well."

  • "Having never been to the Food Market before, it was unrealistic to look for a "quiet" table for four. We settled on the table near the window, furthest from the noise of the kitchen area, but the bar area made it difficult for our conversation to be heard. That said, I was looking forward to the chef's version of gazpacho. I was disappointed. It was thin and lacked any zest. My bronzini dinner made up for it in spades. It was cooked to perfection. My husband's Baltimore Club was just as he remembered it. He was very pleased. We will return."

  • "We celebrated my wife's birthday with a great meal and great service. We all really enjoyed our dinner, including my 8 yr old who polished off watermelon salad and a crabcake. The seabass was the highlight of the meal, along with the chocolate dessert. Only downside was the noise level, it was a bit tough to hear across the table. But overall, great time and highly recommend The Food Market."

  • "Great set up of different size plates, we were able to try several things, which was great because there are a lot of things on the menu that look like they are worth trying. From the small plates we tried the stand out was the street tacos! Yummy! The service was really great. The only thing that would have made the experience better for me is if it was a little bit cooler inside. We got desert to go because we just got to warm."

  • "Best gazpacho ever!! Great array of choices, upscale bar food, great variety of apps, or fancy entrees, the place just works great! Wish they had more chocolate for dessert, but I shouldn't eat dessert anyway."

  • "I wonder if they're starting to watch food costs at The Food Market. I only say that because it seems like their portions have become noticeably less generous....$11 for three very thin pancakes? Their egg benedict was accompanied by a small spoonful of diced potatoes....pretty meager plates all around. That being said, everything is delicious. Was not disappointed with a single bite. They might need a little more floor staff for busy shifts as our server, who was friendly and efficient, seemed to be somewhat overtaxed and in the weeds. Finally, non-dairy milk, in this day and age, is really nice to have on hand and I hope they'll start carrying it in the future!"

  • "The restaurant is small and the tables are closer together but the place feels very 'Baltimore' in that it is long and narrow. The server was fantastic and she offered her suggestions as to what we should try. This was our first visit but we will definitely be back. I had the duck which was great! and my date had the bison which she only wished she had gotten cooked a little more rare. Other than that we couldn't have been happier. We came across the restaurant @ HonFest 2013 but obviously they were slammed. Very glad that we made our way back to Hampden to finally experience it. Also, it was listed in Baltimore Magazines Top 50 restaurants and after having eaten at MANY Baltimore restaurants, I agree."

  • "Enjoyed a lovely meal here. Gazpacho and strawberry salad were first rate first courses. Tilefish and the scallop entrees were both winners, and the strawberry trifle was a great desert. Generous wine pours too, and lots of local beers. About the only negative is the noise. The tables are close together too, but you can't hear anything anyway so it works."

  • "The hostess was very friendly and a pleasure to talk to. The appetizers-lobster sticks and fried green tomatoes were excellent. The restaurant got busy as well as our server. Our dinners were served and it went down hill from there. The steak was burnt and had no flavor, the portion was very small, it appeared to be the butt or end of a steak. The frites were burnt or really crispy, I can only think it sat under the heat lamp. The soft shells had no flavor. Our waiter never came back to see how the meal was. The blondie was good. Not sure about coming back."

  • "Food Market reminds one of downtown NY in atmosphere and noise level. Very young feel and interesting menu. However, for foodies who look for a greater variety of plates without dairy, meat or glutin, this is not the place. In that respect it is more Hampden than East Village or Meat Packing. Given all the good aspects, the menu needs to step forward."

  • "The food here is nothing short of amazing. The fried green tomatoes are the very best that we have eaten! Light, flavorful gausspacho - fabulous. The strawberry bedlingfields will make your eyes close so that you can focus on the balsamic drizzle. Salt and pepper tuna. Spicey, cheesy, winey shrimp. Oh my God! The desserts are killer. The Red Soho drink is so light and delicious. Our waitress, Rebecca, was so knowledgeable with her colorful explanations of each dish that we asked about. She is adorable. This is THE perfect place, my friends."

  • "I have had David(?) as my server twice now and he has been the best so far. I have eaten dinner and brunch multiple times at The Food Market and the service has always been courteous and fairly professional, but this server has always been wonderful. The food was hot and delicious."

  • "Some dishes are above average but most are not. Not bad just not great. Tables are crowded together. Very noisy. Food tends to be fatty. Still worth a trip periodically."

  • "I was there with my brother and nephew on Father's Day for brunch, when there is typically no valet service but plenty of on-street parking. The Hon Fest, a Baltimore tradition that draws up to 100,000 visitors, was taking place that weekend so two blocks, including the block the restaurant is located in, were closed off, and parking was scarce, so I ended up parking about 5 blocks away. The restaurant was packed with a lively crowd, enjoying the many delicacies The Food Market offers. I had the Crab Benedict, a Baltimore take on the traditional Eggs Benedict, but with a crab cake replacing the Canadian Bacon. It is something I highly recommend, although my doctor my object to the Hollandaise sauce."

  • "Food was good but the service was horrible. I had to ask several times of several people for our check because our waitress (who was less than friendly) would not bother checking on our table. Service killed the experience so I would never go back."
