Diner Reviews
  • "This was our second visit back to Fly Trap and for our anniversary. The owner had made sure that we were well taken care of and even came to congratulate us personally. Each plate was as delish as the next one and amazingly set beautifully. This place has definitely become our favorite and we will certainly go back for more!"

  • "Expensive for mediocre food. All main dishes were between $24 to $30 range with the exception of a burger at $17. There is charge for bread plate and for most side dishes. Wine list was limited and also expensive. For the money there are many better choices in the area south of Yerba Buena Center."

  • "After a day of play in San Francisco it was a pleasure to dine once again at The Fly Trap. Good location, able to park on the street right in front of the restaurant. Friendly and attentive staff, nice small selection of wines by the glass. Eclectic menu with Persian accents, and Mr. Zare himself made an appearance at our table. Best of all, they were able to accommodate my wife's dietary restrictions and still provide ample portions and delicious dishes. A great way to end the day in the city before heading 80 miles back home. Really could not ask for more."

  • "Our office just moved in across the street. I am super happy to have this gem as my new afterwork hangout. The service was great and so was the food. A tad loud is my only complaint."

  • "The new Fly Trap offers tasty Mediterranean food and excellent service in an atmospheric setting. A perfect place to go before a Giants game."

  • "We had a business event in the neighborhood and stopped by Fly Trap based on the Open Table reviews. What a wonderful interior, full of San Francisco history and memorabilia. The "Mediterranean" food was just that, but not the typical fare. Very delicious dolmas using peppers vs. grape leaves as the container, for example. Fernando shared stories of the place and its owners with obvious enjoyment. We'd definitely plan to go back."

  • "I liked the food very much. I found the portions small especially for the price. Other than that, we all enjoyed ourselves."

  • "This place was a great find for us. We passed it frequently on our way to work, which isn't open and why would it at 8am in the morning -- and thought it would be a great place to check out for dinner. The minute we walked in, the staff was very personable, and sat us right away. The energy was great and the exclusive libations they served at the bar was better than some concoction I've ever had any place else. I top my hat to you who ever was the bartendar that night. The food was fabulous, cooked well, and worth coming back for. I would recommend this establishment to my friends and to anyone who's looking for something new and different. Definitely on top of my list."

  • "Unusual, creative, and very tasty combinations. Great drink list. Chef delivers good to table! Checks back later yo be all is right. Super desserts! No complaints. Just a little noisy. Sat in back room, which us quieter. Recommend."

  • "This place has two rooms - a larger (more energetic) room and then one behind it for ore sedate dining with a few tables - that's where we were. The menu has plenty of choice and the waiter was more than happy to guide us to what's best. And we enjoyed it all - our standouts were the Fish entrees and the sides with them as well as the brussels sprouts side. A lot of intense flavors so be ready. One limit is that the wine list is short of gems - there is however a better than average wine store around the corner and corkage is reasonable."

  • "I have a pet peeve regarding waitstaff not bringing "go" boxes or doggy bags to the table with the check. Once again we left without our leftovers. The patron should not have to remember to ask for them. This is not a problem that is unique to The Fly Trap. Over the years I have left Perbacco many times empty handed because the waitstaff doesn't provide your leftovers. Annoying."

  • "A outstanding meal with top notch service. With so many great dishes on the menu to try, we opted for a selection of appetizers to be shared at the table Tapas style. The waiter and entire staff quickly adapted to this request and their performance was flawless. Not to mention each dish was a magnificent treat, with interesting flavors balanced together with a beautiful presentation."

  • "3 course Pri Fix menu. Everything great except for Main Course. We Both had New York Steaks. Not cooked medium rare as requested, most of it was rare, some really rare, only the small ends were medium rare. Markings were fine. The real problem is the meat was tasteless, and worse still, the cut was skimpy. Any resturant that sells a half to five-eights an inch think steak is killing the thrill - and purpose of a New York. Looked and Tasted like a Safeway Rancher's reserve. Saw the salmon steak of the table next to us looked quite dry. PS. a mandatory 20% tip built in for a party of two is insulting. Would have tipped 20% anyway as the service was fine."

  • "Inventive and delicious...excellent menu with terrific service. Winter salad was one of the best salads and the penne pasta with lamb was an amazing taste sensation."

  • "We went for dinner at Zare and though we did enjoy the food, the service was scattered. We were not asked for a drink order and all of our plates were removed at different times. The service was rushed and did not make it enjoyable."

  • "Service was good and the ambiance was excellent for "adult" dining out. Great little room -but the accolades stop there. The food was only ok and the portions were way too small for the high price. The expensive glass of wine only filled a third of the not very big glass. The highlites were the trout salad and the resplendant goat cheesecake for dessert. Skip the wierd deconstructed baklava- mess on a plate."

  • "The hostess was very welcoming and the table was ready when we arrived and held while we had a drink at the bar. THe waiters were friendly and helpful, attentive while not being in your face. We had the octopus salad while a little chewy was delicious. the Beef marrow was, as recommended on yelp, probably the best in SF. We especially liked the quince jam that complimented them. The beef cheeks were tender and most flavorful and done to perfection. The wine list, while limited, is interesting and compliments the style of the food. We particularly enjoyed the Lebanese red ( the name escapes me) . The noise level was too high to talk comfortably but that is the trend in SF restaurants today. We will recommend and return"

  • "Zare is a fun, energetic bar/restaurant to hang out in after work. The decor, lighting and ambience is conducive to small get-togethers. The appetizers I liked were the hummus and the meatballs. We were lucky to have been served by Gabriel who was just awesome!"

  • "I would recommend this restaurant to all of my friends. We had a great time from the minute we walked in. Our waiter was extremely helpful and very knowledgeable about the menu. We enjoyed everything he recommend. We ordered a soup and a salad to share and he split the plates without us evening asking. We never had to wait for drinks and the food came out very fast. We will definitely be coming back soon!"

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our experience over the holidays at Zare. It began with our server who was friendly, helpful and the most knowledgeable we have ever had regarding the menu and individual dishes. He took our experience to a new level. The food exceeded the expectations that he set and his recommendations and the service was terrific!! Highly recommend this restaurant!"

  • "This place is great! The food was amazing, different from any other place I have been to. You must get the Brussel sprouts. The staff was so attentive and made the dinning experience wonderful. I would recommend this place to all my friends. And I am a bit if a foodie."

  • "We visited Zare at Flytrap for the first time. We were impressed with the food, but the service was even better. It was a totally awesome experience at a reasonably-priced restaurant. Being only a few blocks south of Market, it was easy to walk to. We were also impressed with the clientele, who were mostly 30's - 40's having a nice time with friends. We definitely will go back."

  • "Our group started out with the olives and tapenade ,everyone liked this. We tried the bone marrow which was delicious, a pomegranate sauce with chutney was perfect. The blackened cod over quinoa was cooked perfect, moist and flakey. I loved the cucumber pana cotta with cherries! I would definitely return to this restaurant!"

  • "Med food isn't always my favorite. It is usually pretty much the same but not here. The food is very flavorful and creative. The eggplant cup was so yummy. The lavash was warm and delicious, the persimmon salad great, the kale very good, and the coucous with seafood was excellent. The waiter was attentive and helpful. The only thing I would have liked is if the dishes came out more slowly. We order quite a few other beside what I mentioned and everything arrived at the same time. It was a week night and wasn't crowded so I felt rushed. I definitely will be back."

  • "Always have enjoyed this restaurant. We had great customer service, brought a special chair for my daughter in-law who was having back problems. Food servers were very attentive throughout our meal. Will definately come back again! Food was delicious."

  • "We tried a lot of food and a lot of drinks and nothing disappointed. Plus, everyone who worked there seemed to be enjoying themselves....and not in a plaster on a fake smile type of way. We are from out of town but will be back to Zare when we are back in San Francisco."

  • "I went here for dinner, I have to say it was amazing. A MUST TRY!"

  • "Wonderful restaurant; a "Persian" twist to all his dishes. Gives each dish a nice little surprise. A little noisy, but to be expected; Zare' himself comes out frequently to deliver dishes and to meet and greet. I think that shows great care to his customers and a lot of goodwill too. Why "very good" instead of "excellent" for food? I think the price is a little on the high side; but well worth the experience."

  • "The chef Haas, goes above and beyond. Knew him at Zare and the food has always been so good. This restaurant is beautiful- and he surrounds himself with the best staff. Wonderful experience again!"

  • "Due to bad traffic, we were very late for our reservation and they were very gracious about it. We had an event in an hour and asked them to expedite and boy did they! We were in and out in 30 minutes, and yet the service was done with a smile and we never felt short changed. The food was delicious too- everything we had was tasty and perfectly cooked despite the rush."

  • "It was good, but a little overpriced for what it was. And I was still hungry afterward. I went to kokkari the next day - paid less, ate more, and the food was better. So, while I enjoyed my trip to zare, I probably won't do it again."

  • "Ambience was very good, but menu variety and food quality was far from impressive."

  • "Our bartender, was great- had an interesting & yummy POM daiquir. Ate in the back dining rm-quiet & intimate, Nathan & Nina were charming & very knowledgable about the menu. We decided on sharing 2 dishes-the seasonal autumn spaghetti-OMG-the flavors were so deelicious & the Saturday night meatball-we recommended this dish on the spot to 2 other groups that came in...the spices were perfectly combined & is the owner/chef's mom's recipe with his twist on it. We ate every morsel of both dishes-had planned on eating only half so we would not be stuffed at the theater...we could not quit eating either dish and cleaned our plates! Eating at Zare is like going to a friend's for dinner and having a wonderful evening! We will go back again!"
