  • "This upscale restaurant had nice, old antique decor. Drinks were good but food was small portion and tasteless. We went for lobster and scallops and they were under seasoned and tasteless. Not worth the money. Staff doesn't like if you have an issue and it takes forever to get a manager. When a manager did arrive she took care of us and made it known that customer service is number one when your not impressed."

  • "From the ice cold oysters to the lobster-stuffed scallops and kale salad, the food was delicious. We arrived on the early side and were rewarded with half price oysters during happy hour. We met friends who were also visiting Halifax, and were so happy that we escaped the noisy, less comfortable waterfront restaurants. The architecture of this old building is a gem with waiters ready to tell the stories of prior use. A very enjoyable meal!"

  • "On the recommendation of a local, we reserved a table at Five Fishermen for a fresh, whole lobster dinner. The hostess had us wait 15-20 minutes for our table, after ascertaining in which part of the restaurant we were interested - fine dining or casual. We chose casual after looking at the two menus, as the whole lobster was $1 less expensive and did not involve stairs. Service was leisurely and most pleasant. The 1.5# lobsters came with some potatoes and a few whole green beans. I've had fresher-tasting lobster, but this one was quite good - perhaps not as sweet as I'd like, but still delicious. The claws and tails were cracked for easy access but otherwise intact. Overall, a nice dinner in a pleasant venue."

  • "First off, I won't go too in depth to save time and space, but you'll love the decor and history! Ask for their pamphlet. The lobster ravioli is made with fresh lobster, go figure, by the chef who makes them fresh every morning. Portions are very very small here. They tell you that when you order, but wow, they ARE tiny! I thought the Five Fish would be a great dinner selection for this place. It didn't blow me away. The lobster risotto and giant shrimp were fantastic, but the oysters, salmon, and halibut?, were nothing special, just average I thought. You have to get dessert! It's that simple ...do it! The servers are friendly & really cater to your age and personality to make it a fun experience, awesome! I'll be going back one day!"

  • "You are seated by a story teller who explains the origins of the building and the stories of its past. The server is exceptionately attentive without being noticed - refills, clear away used plates, etc. The portion are not large but the ingredients are ample and tastefully prepared. A higher priced restaurant but worth it."

  • "Always good food at the Five Fisherman. Consistent and predictable. Our server mostly ignored us... Long wait to order drinks, then food, then the bill... Had to ask for the wine list, then had to ask for water, then had to ask for salt and pepper. Nice atmosphere and good seafood. Good place to bring tourists to Halifax - better than the usual tourist restaurants (Salty's, etc)."

  • "It was highly recommend. The shrimp appetizer was completely off. Too spicy could not taste garlic. It's garlic shrimp dish? The dessert decadence chocolate? is simply under standard. The service is not attentive. The Salmon dish & the 5 fish where very good. Over all maybe a bit expensive for the quality and believe me I eat in restaurant all the time. Henri and Charlotte"

  • "I have dined here twice, unfortunately the mussel bar was gone on this last occassion but it remains one of the best places to eat seafood. It is fresh from local sources, never frozen and prepared just right. The service was prompt and attentive.. I would recommend it to anyone and intend to return myself."

  • "We had a great dinner as we finally got in, because the previous day we tried to get in without a reservation thinking Wednesday can't be that busy, well we were wrong this place is busy all the time.   • "The atmosphere at 5 fish was pleasant and our server Mallory was exceptional but the food was subpar to say the least I had the pan seared halibut with lobster potatoe hash and my wife the house special a medley of seafood.When I have to ask for salt then the chef either doesn't season or forgot the halibut was a big piece of dry chewy tastless fish with a cloyingly sweet sauce on the hash. My wife like most of her seafood except for the halibut which was dry and tastless.Too bad the place has 2 outta 3 but they need to taste what they're preparing"

  • "Good for the unadventurous diner I guess they used to have a "mussel bar" but new ownership/management changed that, for the better.they now list on their menu that you can get unlimited mussels if you order them.What was funny about it was they ran out of mussels before we ordered a second bowl. they offered us another appetizer gratis.crab cakes were only fair in flavor, texture and "crabbiness". I had a salad (beet, goat and nuts, I think) which was decent size but fairly pedestrian.seafood pasta was adequate, decent tomato sauce although somewhat heavy for the delicate variety of seafood which included lobster, scallops, shrimp and white fish. wine list was very limited. Our server was very accommodating and friendly."

  • "Arrived at restaurant early and they were very accommodating in providing our party with a table. I consider that good service. The portions were very small and the quality was just fare. $16 for a lobster tail that was extremely chewy and tough and the fish on the 5 fish platter was very dry although the risotto was good. The music was loud and the lights shining though the ceiling fans created an annoying strobe light effect on the table. Another table complained about this and they shut the fans off. I found the waitress was a little pushy and she removed drinks off the table before we were finished without asking. I don't mind paying if the quality it good but this restaurant missed the mark on both quality and price."

  • "We found this place on Open Table and loved it-- it started with the hostess welcoming us and saying "so I see you have never been here before"-- in all the places I have booked with O-T and they ask "have you been here before" this was the first place to actually note that comment-- the food was great- but what is really cool about eating here is reading the history of the building---(hint: ghosts) If you are in town for a night or a few, pick one and dine here."

  • "We were looking for an upscale restaurant with a talented chef, we found it at the Five Fishermen. We arrived a little early, sat at the bar and had two very fine martinis and enjoyed the oysters on the half shell special. we then went upstairs, note the fine dining and gorgeous ambience is upstairs. They do not have the mussels salad bar any more, but they you can purchase a large bowl of mussels for $12 which they will gladly refill for no additional charge. prices were not inexpensive but not over the top either. I had the halibut, delicious and my husband had the scallops with lobster. Our waiter was so very attentive and switched our silverware numerous times. Desserts delicious, a little pricey but very yummy. highly recommend!"

  • "I've been here a couple of times for special occasions before and been impressed by the ambiance, decor and the buffet. I found out that they recently ditched the help yourself buffet inc with main courses, this is clearly an incentive to profit (Being able to lower main course prices to be more in line with competition and to use buffet area for more seating). Personally I found the seafood based buffet helped to make this place stand out, I was also in the buffet area which isn't quite as visually stimulating. This decision may work for them but to be honest I'd personally struggle to find good reason to come here again other than the professional friendly service and a great menu."

  • "My fiancee and I ate here on our last night in Halifax. It had been recommended by a friend as well as a local we were sitting next to on a flight. I started with the oysters, which were a little pricey, but they were fabulous. The lobster stuffed scallops I ordered as my main was excellent. Very rich, but the portion was just right. My fiancee enjoyed his blackened char with chorizo and corn salsa. The only negative to the entire meal was that the bread was slightly bland and flavorless, but when eating a great meal I suppose you shouldn't touch the bread anyway:)"

  • "We have visited this Restaurant for many years. Recent changes were made to their menu and restaurant. The salad bar and mussel bar were closed. At our recent supper, the waiter served us 3 steaks that were not ordered and they were not the quality that was expected. Tenderloin were ordered , but Striploin were served. The portion sizes of meals were very, very small, although they were good. The desert menu was very limited and there was not enough choice. We left wanting more."

The food was tasty but main course of halibut was smaller than average The five fishes main was certainly sufficient. There are more varied offerings than previously.The mussel appetizer was delicious and generous. The service was outstanding; attention to allergies and special needs exceptional. Food very good. The atmosphere excellent."
