  • "The atmosphere was fabulous. It was my birthday and the staff were very attentive and the food was very well presented and had great flavours. Loved the mussels. I live in Ontario and whenever I am in Nova Scotia I gravitate to the Five Fish. The Chef Jamie is awesome"

  • "We were looking for an upscale restaurant with a talented chef, we found it at the Five Fishermen. We arrived a little early, sat at the bar and had two very fine martinis and enjoyed the oysters on the half shell special. we then went upstairs, note the fine dining and gorgeous ambience is upstairs. They do not have the mussels salad bar any more, but they you can purchase a large bowl of mussels for $12 which they will gladly refill for no additional charge. prices were not inexpensive but not over the top either. I had the halibut, delicious and my husband had the scallops with lobster. Our waiter was so very attentive and switched our silverware numerous times. Desserts delicious, a little pricey but very yummy. highly recommend!"

  • "Liam our server made our night Magical. The oysters sang. And the wine whispered magic. The mussels were magnificent. The Sempe was ambrosial. A stunning, stunning gem in Halifax."

  • "I've been here a couple of times for special occasions before and been impressed by the ambiance, decor and the buffet. I found out that they recently ditched the help yourself buffet inc with main courses, this is clearly an incentive to profit (Being able to lower main course prices to be more in line with competition and to use buffet area for more seating). Personally I found the seafood based buffet helped to make this place stand out, I was also in the buffet area which isn't quite as visually stimulating. This decision may work for them but to be honest I'd personally struggle to find good reason to come here again other than the professional friendly service and a great menu."

  • "My fiancee and I ate here on our last night in Halifax. It had been recommended by a friend as well as a local we were sitting next to on a flight. I started with the oysters, which were a little pricey, but they were fabulous. The lobster stuffed scallops I ordered as my main was excellent. Very rich, but the portion was just right. My fiancee enjoyed his blackened char with chorizo and corn salsa. The only negative to the entire meal was that the bread was slightly bland and flavorless, but when eating a great meal I suppose you shouldn't touch the bread anyway:)"

  • "We have visited this Restaurant for many years. Recent changes were made to their menu and restaurant. The salad bar and mussel bar were closed. At our recent supper, the waiter served us 3 steaks that were not ordered and they were not the quality that was expected. Tenderloin were ordered , but Striploin were served. The portion sizes of meals were very, very small, although they were good. The desert menu was very limited and there was not enough choice. We left wanting more."

  • "Miss the salad bar...while the entrees are slightly lower in cost, the meal ends up being more expensive if you enjoy more than one course. The food was tasty but main course of halibut was smaller than average The five fishes main was certainly sufficient. There are more varied offerings than previously. The mussel appetizer was delicious and generous. The service was outstanding; attention to allergies and special needs exceptional. Food very good. The atmosphere excellent."

  • "Food just ok, nothing exceptional. Oysters served on a lettuce leaf and a wedge of lemon, nothing else. Presentation very basic. Lobster ok but a lobster is a lobster. Nothing else than melted butter... Overall very expensive for what you get. Disappointing... It takes years to build a reputation but may no take that long to destroy it. I will not go back. The 5 fishermen need a wake up call. They may miss the next boat."

  • "Started with a reservation for four, two couples. It grew into six then eight and ended as ten people. The restaurant was ver accommodating. The hostess and wait staff were outstanding. The food was done perfect. It came out in perfect order and timing. I strongly recommend this restaurant to ANYONE!"

  • "I had the Five Fishes. The food tasted good, but the meal was very salty - except the rolls, which tasted like the salt had been forgotten. Service was good, ambience was fine."

  • "I had dined at The Five Fisherman previously and was delighted with how great the food was. This visit, however, did not leave me as pleased. I ordered the steak from the fixed price menu and it was so full of fat, I could not eat the whole thing. I felt like half of the portion was inedible. The spare rib appetizer was small yet delicious. The bread pudding for dessert was far too rich for my taste and left me craving my grandmother's Cape Breton version (but those without CB roots might have loved it!). I will likely eat there again and hope this less than fantastic meal was just a blip, seeing at it was NYE and a fixed price menu."

  • "Overall - great setting, service, atmosphere. We had a lovely experience. The couple joining us did not enjoy their food selections. One ordered the lobster bisque and it was not to her liking. She was too shy to let staff know and returned it haven eaten only a spoonful or two."

  • "The first clue that there might be a problem was that the place was empty at 6 pm on a Friday night. The service was still quite good (it should be with so few diners) and the mussel bar is a redeeming feature. Unfortunately, the main courses were just average. I would go again, but only for a bisque and the mussel/salad bar. A bit sad for such a storied restaurant."

  • "My wife and I have made this place a regular stop in Halifax. Great service and an atmosphere where you can chat, drink wine and enjoy seafood prepared with an eye for delightful presentation. The mussel bar is a hit and the mains are never a disappointment, great quality ingredients, carefully prepared."

  • "As I am from out of town I do not visit the restaurant often however I can say that the quality of the menu and the food has dropped in the last 2-3 years while prices are out of line. Only 1 of 3 couples in our party were local. They like us were very disappointed in the food . The lobster bisque did not taste like lobster, the lobster thermador was more filler than one would expect and the lobster stuffed scallops were luke warm and the portion very small to a point where those eating it had to fill up on salad and bread. The servers did an excellent job in spite of the food issues, although from some of the expressions seen they were embarrassed by the food Last night we went to Mckelvies. excellent meal at a reasonable cost"

  • "Excellent dining experience, we were there to celebrate two birthdays and a better place to do so would be hard to find. There is no rush and made to feel the most important customer they have. Food excellent."

  • "The Five Fishermen never fails to go to great lengths to when you tell them it is a special night. The atmosphere and history of the restaurant could carry them but they have added European style service, a seasonal prix fixe menu, and knowledgeable sommeliers to round out your experience. The food is always made with fresh ingredients that care and creativity transform classic dishes into feasts for your eyes as well as your palate. This is one of the few restaurants where I have given the manager a kiss on the check and always left sated, invigorated and smiling."

  • "I would never return to this restaurant. The salad bar was nothing special. The mussels in the mussel bar were dry and the sauces ho hum. The server at the mussel bar did not know where the mussels originated either. The entrees were ok, but not extraordinary. The bill however was exorbitant. Would not recommend, especially given the other wonderful dining choices in Halifax."

  • "Our party of four all enjoyed the salad bar to start. The main courses got a very good by all as well. The service was indeed outstanding. Everything arrive on time and hot. Our waiter was very attentive and friendly. My wife and I will most certainly be going back. We both would highly recommend the Five Fisherman for a special night out."

  • "Overall, the quality of food and service was above what my wife and I expected. We have heard of five fisherman restaurant from colleagues who travel extensively in the maritimes, and we appreciated not only our friends reviews but our hotel, cab driver and tourist operators insight to this great quality restaurant."

  • "The building has so much history. We were hoping to see a ghost but no luck. The servers were all wonderful. Our waiter was Patrick. He was friendly and helpful. All you can eat salad and mussel bar was delicious. I had butter poached lobster. It was amazing. For dessert we had pumpkin cheesecake with cinnamon ice cream. It was amazing."

  • "The Five Fishermen is a seafood lover's dream. They do not disappoint. The salad and mussel bar is a great lead-in to an awesome entree (I had Lobster Thermidor). No room for dessert today."

  • "My companion and I ordered fish from the Prix-Fix menu - tuna and snapper. Both dishes were over-flavoured with little to no taste of the fish getting through- could have been anything. The fish was very well cooked but spoiled by the combination of tastes. The Prix-Fix menu was reasonably priced at $51 but the a-la-carte prices seemed way too high for what seemed to be an average establishment. The dishes would have to be significantly better than what we experienced to justify the high cost. The table service was outstanding."

  • "Overpriced. My lobster came with cracker tail but the whole lobster was suppose to be cracked by myself. They even gave me instructions on how. Butter that came with lobster should have been heated while at the table but came on the plate with the lobster. By the time I finished the tail the butter was too cold. I would not recommend. It was much better years ago as The Little Fish Restaurant."

  • "Had a wonderful time at the restaurant, service was excellent and friendly. Came here for the classic lobster Thermidor and was a little disappointed not in the size as we had two shelves. It was the sauce as there seem to be little of it once you delved under the breadcrumbs and Parmesan cheese, The accompany vegetables and potatoes were great. I would recommend this restaurant anytime"

  • "If I could, I would rate a 4.5. The mussel bar is always wonderful! The salad options are less varied than in the past, but still very appealing. The fish is always fresh and nicely prepared. Our service was excellent. One person has a serious allergy and this was attended to with skill and kindness. The dessert course was not as interesting as the other courses."
