Diner Reviews
  • "A friend and I booked a table for Friday night. It was our first time in The Fish Shack and we were impressed with the location, decor, ambience and menu. When my food arrived I waited for a few minutes for my friends to arrive so that we would dine together. This didn't happen and I had finished my food, the table was cleared and we had to wait another 15 minutes before her food arrived. Not the ideal dining experience! The waiter on our table was absolutely lovely and explained that the kitchen were way behind. Because he was so pleasant and took the time to explain the situation and I be back to give the place another chance! I just hope that the next time the kitchen our on their game! "

  • "I love the food. I like coming for lunch and getting the lunch box with the fish tacos. mmm so good!"

  • "Food was mediocre for the price, and service was lacking. Wouldn't recommend the Fish Shack."

  • "This is the second time I've gone to this restaurant and it's the second time that I've had this terrible service. First, I ordered a drink and after 20 minutes, they still haven't given me the drink. Second, I ordered steamed mussels as an appetizer and the waiter brought the other three appetizers to the table except mine. He said that the bartenders made a mistake and it will only be a few minutes to get mine. 20 minutes later, I never got it so I cancelled it because I didn't want to keep my relatives waiting. As far as the lunch was concerned, we didn't get our food for an hour. I don't know what they have in the kitchen but they must only have a couple of steamers and they can't handle a surge of customers at lunch."

  • "Overall my experience with the Fish Shack is and always has been excellent. Great prices and if you love seafood this is the place to dine, not to mention they make the best Caesar's in town."

  • "Great fun atmosphere but it was simply too expensive for what we got. The bill for the three adults was $138 before tip and we ended up going out for dessert elsewhere and EASILY had room for a large crepe each. The prices need to be dropped by about a third for us to go back -or else increase the portions."

  • "I had wanted to try The Fish Shack for awhile but it was a rather disappointing evening. I loved the atmosphere of the restaurant and the decor. There was good energy and it was pretty busy. Our waiter was friendly and pleasant but it did take quite awhile to get our drinks and I had to ask several times for a glass of water. Once the food arrived, we never saw him again till he brought the bill. The food was the disappointing part. We started with a very good calamari appetizer but it went downhill from there. I ordered the grilled halibut which was two very thin pieces that were overcooked and extremely dry with no flavour. My friend ordered the fish tacos. The fish was like a ground mixture with an odd texture and very little flavour."

  • "Had deep fried oyster appetizer and grilled rock fish with rice. I in particular enjoyed the oysters. The peppery mayo that went with the oysters was very good."

  • "The fish in the fish tacos were frozen basa filets and the fish and chips were very oily. The coleslaw was drenched in horseradish and the salmon cakes were cold and crumbly when served. The only good thing were the steamed clams and mussels. Service isn't up to par. Couple times I had to look around for servers to fill our water or even give us plates but most of the time, they were just socializing with one another. Worst bit, frozen fish tacos and the fish and chips took almost an hour to come. I would never come back and you shouldn't either with the plethora of casual seafood restaurants in Vancouver."

  • "The mussels were not very hot and were chewy and were not served in any broth."

  • "I was looking for a seafood place in Granville area and decided to try Fish Shack. It was a real hit- the food was excellent, all seafood is fresh, portions are decently sized and priced. The service is very good. Our first visit was mid-February, and we have been there two more times since. Everyone loved it, and definitely we are going to be back. The restaurant has a very interesting and unique decor, decent choice of beers and wine and very attractive special offers - e.g. buck-a-shack before 6 pm. We did not book it for our first visit, as it was a weekday and there were only two of us. For the next two visits I made a reservation, as the group was bigger and it was Saturday evening - and I am glad I did, the restaurant was full."

  • "Their website advertised a Valentines Day Set Dinner Special which was available February 11th – 16th. So booked a reservation on the 16th via Open Table. When we arrived the server told us it had ended on the day before :( She pushed their Sunday lobster special. We went for that but she later came back to tell us that it was sold out, as it was a first come first serve special :( We were there at 6:30pm. So we had the popcorn shrimp + fishermans' catch. Both were very good! Overall, the food was great, but our server was very slow with drinks and refills. Also she was absent for most of the meal and took a long time with the bill."

  • "We enjoyed our meal very much. The food tasted fresh and was prepared perfectly. Our only complaint is that we felt cramped for space. We would have liked a few fewer tables on the floor to allow more personal space between the tables."

  • "My dining partner and I thoroughly enjoyed our experience. We had a reservation at 7pm and arrived early. It was VERY busy which surprised me because from the outside this does not look like a large restaurant or one that is hopping. It was though!! The food was excellent - well cooked not greasy and for Dine out there was soooo much. Definite man meals. Living downtown it is really hard to find a reasonably priced seafood restaurant. They go from cheap and nasty to extremely snooty and expensive. so I believe your restaurant fills a long awaited void. We will return."

  • "Made my reservations through open table and I even called the same day to confirm. However, when I showed up with my friends, the host tells me that there's no reservation under my name. I tried to explain to him that I had made reservations but he brushed me off. The restaurant was pretty empty so we were seated in the end. Our server was rude from the very start. He took our order but made no eye contact whatsoever. Didn't even know if he was paying attention, but soon learned he wasn't as he brought me the wrong drink. Also, how difficult is it to place the dish onto the table? I did not appreciate having my plate handed to me. The last thing that annoyed me that night was having the bill tossed onto the table. Definitely not coming back"

  • "The food took a little long the day I went, but other than that, the waiter was very good, apologising and keeping us up-to-date. And the food when it did arrive was great."

  • "We made reservation for 6:15 PM, went in 10 minutes late, we were told to wait 30 minutes. While waiting, we saw 2 tables that were available, asked if we could get seated on one of them, were told that they are waiting guests for 7 PM - same hour that we were told we will have a table anyways. Based on their own admission that at least one other table would be available at 7 PM ,we did not see the logic in us waiting when two! tables were available. After host denied us second time to be seated we had to leave, will not return because of the un-professional staff there."

  • "If you don't like sitting at a table next to a constant talker, you should ask for a separate table from the line-up on the wall area."

  • "I have mixed feelings about Fish Shack. The tables were very close to each other- too close to be my comfort zone. One server was very rude, then the other was very friendly. The mussels were awesome, but the main dishes were so so. The seating was strange...one part of the restaurant was very crowded, the other part was relatively empty. It seemed a romantic place for couples, but then you could not talk comfortably as you could hear the conversation from the table besides you or vice versa. The only time I will go back again is for a dollar oyster b4 6pm.....I think Happy-Hour will be my best bet in Fish Shack...."

  • "This was my 1st dining experience and may not return again due to the lack of service. After being seated, my guest & I waited so long for our server that we had enough time to decide what we wanted for drinks, appys, entrees & desserts. Everytime our server brought us a particular course, the plates from the previous course were still not yet cleared from our table. My guest placed an order for his 2nd drink when our server came around w/ our entrees and by the time my guest was done his entree, he still didn't get his drink yet. He had to inform the manager that he did not receive his drink yet & how long the wait was. When we were still enjoying our dessert, the server brought us our bill when we did not ask for it yet. Service not good."

  • "The Fish Shack's $18 menu can't really be beat - good selection of appy and entrees and good value options for add-ons like lobster tail and extra 1/2 pound of mussels. Only my first time at this restaurant so can't say what the regular menu is like. Service can be slow. Kind of odd because our waitress was good at being proactive and asking if we wanted certain things - water, the bill etc. - to which we would say yes but she doesn't follow through. The beer pairings were good."

  • "First experience at Fish Shack through Dine Out Vancouver. Like it very much. The mussels are good and tasty. The mixed fries are yummy. Servers are friendly. Reasonable price. I will come again for the fresh oysters."

  • "The food portions were just okay. The taste was just okay. We had the bucket of seafood and it was cold. Nothing amazing about it. Overpriced for what it was. Service was okay. We waited a long time to order and waited a long time to get our food and needed to wait a long time to ask for our bill. We thought it would be a nice night out but it really was an annoying experience. It took me months to even want to talk about this experience and write this review because I don't even want to think about this place. Wish it was better all around."

  • "Place was noisy. Music was very loud. It is a place for the younger generation of which I am not a part of. I can recommend for kids in their late 20's, early 3-'s but it is not for me. Food was good. The toffee pudding was excellent. Service was fast. they served the main dish five minutes after serving the appetizer."

  • "the food was a disappointment. The mussels didn't taste very fresh and the clamato broth was bland and minimal. The fried seafood appetizer was quite good though. The main course was not bad but nothing special. The dessert was good but sloppily presented, my cake was smashed and didn't look appetizing. The server was very friendly and helpful, and the alcohol menu was well priced and a nice variety of options."

  • "Mussels and the mixed fry were great (preferable mussels, we added an extra half pound). Filet-o-Fish sandwich was really good, but the penne jambalaya was a big disappointment. 2 orders of the penne from my table end up not finishing the dish because do that. I upgraded the fries from my sandwich to poutine and the poutine was really really yummy. Dessert was alright. The serving time took way too long. Took a full 2 hours to finish the dinner and more than half the time was waiting time. Overall the food was great -"

  • "The restaurant itself was really nice, but it was quite busy. I do not blame the restaurant though, my boyfriend and I decided to try this restaurant out because of the Dine Out Vancouver Festival, so there were extra crowds that night. The food was pretty good, but our waiter, kind of only gave attention to me, and not my boyfriend which kind of peeved me a little bit. And when we ordered a coke, a coke with rum came and was given to me, even though my boyfriend ordered it.....weird. But after that, the rest of the night went without a hitch. The dessert though, was to die for. I'm not really into dessert, or too much sweet, but it was a vanilla type cake with toffee sauce drizzled all over and their house made whipped cream, TOO GOOD!"

  • "Popular place where you should reserve online before to avoid waiting. We did not have to wait as our table was waiting for us. Casual restaurant with an energetic atmosphere; giant tv screens, varied music, and the warf's giant bell even rang a few times! Service was quick and helpful, rather large selection in the menu. Good selection for beer even if they were out of R&B, Chose a Big Catch and it was great; can't get seafood any fresher as you get the meat of the shells yourself. Server was perfect, he knew when to be present without cutting in our conversation; the free berry crum cake was delicious! Great dinning experience; not cheap but it's still affordable. We discussed coming back during the Summer to try the outdoor eating bar."

  • "After spotting the Dine Out menu online we phoned ahead to make a five o clock booking. The person who took the call offered 15:30 at best. We arrived to the restaurant and informed the maitre d that we had reserved for 15:30. He then informed us that the Dine Out menu did not start until 5 at which point we explained that we had spoken with someone on the phone and booked on the website based on this conversation. He advised that he would ask the Manager but came back a moment later and said there were no exceptions. We then left the restaurant very disappointed with the unfriendly customer service of the maitre d who did not seem too bothered that we would never be back to the restaurant again because of his handling of the situation."

  • "Just recently my friend and I went to eat at the Fish Shack. The menu was innovative, fun, and tasty. I enjoy my seafood and thought we would try the Dine Out Vancouver Menu. To my surprise we decided to order from the regular menu and it was delicious. Not too pricey but must admit the tables we close together so getting up and moving around in some area was a bit difficult. All in all though a great experience."

  • "My family and I came here for dineout Vancouver. Since I made online reservations, we were seated promptly when we arrived....then everything went downhill from that point. Our appetizers took awhile to arrive ( 30 min), and our main course took another 40 minutes from the time our appetizer plates got taken away. We were shocked since our main entree were all fish burgers. How long does it take to dry fish???!?? Service was not what we would have expected from glowbal group. Our waitress never once asked if we wanted another drink. Dessert was good but was missing the chantilly cream as stated on the menu! Someone must have rushed them out but lacked attention to detail:( would not recommend this place after our experience."

  • "Came for Dine Out 2014 and had a mediocre experience. Reservation was for 7 PM with a preset menu and waited over an hour for our appetizer. Confusion in the kitchen and miscommunication between serving staff and management with regard to items no longer available and what was offered as a substitution. Love Glowbal Group but the Fish Shack was a little lacklustre. A little to casual of a dining experience."
