The Federal Restaurant & BarJust as I rememberedI was visiting Agawam. I had not been there in years since it was the Federal Hill Club. I would go there with my Father for a special dinner. It was time to return, I had a wonderful time & food was excellant.5/13/2013 12:00:00 AMOne of my top ten restaurants.We've been dining at The Federal since it opened and it is our first choice for special occasions or a cozy dinner for two. The food is outstanding and the staff is wonderful. The "bucket of balls" is a must, but so is the entire menu!
Valet parking has made it inconvenient for self-parkers, frequently having to park in the back lot or on the street.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMNew England CharmThe Federal is understated, as a colonial pub and restaurant should be. The beautiful moldings and paneling and traditional colonial colors warp you back to colonial times. The food however is American American American all the way...a fusion of modern with traditional. The food is well prepared, presented and spiced. This was the best Mother's Day brunch I ever hosted. The flowers I ordered were the centerpiece...I did not have to worry if they arrived. My only negative criticism....the waiter, while professional and moderately prompt...lacked a bit of ooompf. It would have been nice if he were a bit more personable and he was missing from the table more than I like...however...I prefer that over a haunt. We were surprised with a treat from the chef after our orders were taken. They brought out risotto balls for us to sample and these were excellent. We shared the crab cakes for starters, since they were small enough they did not to ruin our appetite. I chose to have two of the specials, the blood orange salad and the pork loin which were very, very good. My wife and guest started with the clam chowder which had a slight variation to the traditional and they found it very delicious and satisfying. My wife had the Chicken Bolognese which was very delicious, I had her leftovers for lunch the next day. I was pleasantly surprised with my overall experience. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, the Bar was energetic and the dining rooms were well appointed. The menu had a variety of items to choose from; very creative ingredient parings and all that were tasted were excellent. I had a dish with polenta, pulled pork, salmon, and crab cole slaw. Awesome, taste and textures of food. Also no problem with my wife eating gluten free. We highly recommend this restaurant. A little pricey but the portions are substantial.4/5/2013 12:00:00 AMThursday Happy HourMy girlfriend and I wanted to celebrate the purchase of our first home and what better place to do it than The Federal. We decided to sit at an open high-top table in the bar area because every Thursday starting at 5PM, they serve complimentary bite sized appetizers on spoons for an hour or so. It's a fun way to try a lot of different offerings and not get too full to enjoy a meal. We ordered a chicken meatball pizza, beet risotto with melted bacon, a poached pear salad to share, and a couple of drinks. Everything was fantastic as always! We love it there! The service is great and the atmosphere is great in the bar or dining room. However, our waiter, while a nice gentlemen, was not very attentive. We waited for drinks, waited for water (didn't come to refill water glasses until we were ready to leave) and he dropped our pizza onto our table when he went to take it to wrap it to go. A friend whom has dined in fine restaurants in over 30 countries rated the Federal as 1 of her top 3 restaurants in the world. In any restaurant, the true value comes down to the food and The Federal did not disappoint - the food was outstanding.
