A word from The Fat Ham
Chef and Owner Kevin Sbraga’s
second restaurant brings the heart of the South to the University City neighborhood of
Philadelphia with his signature “no boundaries” approach to cuisine. Drawing inspiration from
the ingredients, culinary traditions, heritage, and homes of the South, Chef Sbraga’s menu
reflects dishes found at Sunday suppers and on country porches, all served alongside The Fat
Ham’s seasonal cocktails.
The inspiration for The Fat Ham’s design comes from houses found in the rustic Southern
countryside, featuring an eclectic combination of glasses, tableware and chairs. While
the pork-centric menu explores heritage breeds and Southern staples such as sorghum butter,
benne seeds, pimento cheese, and Carolina gold rice. Chef Sbraga brings a home-style touch to
the menu with house-made pickles, pepper sauce, buttermilk, and fresh macaroni sharing the menu with reimagined twists on country ham, hot chicken, and boiled peanuts.

    To get into the Fat Ham it seems you must make reservations. Try to get them on the earlier side or they may run out of some of the dishes. It was packed & the tables are very close to each other so if you are claustrophobic, this might not be the best place for you. I was disappointed that the kitchen had run out of both the mac & cheese as well as the nightly specials (it was 7:45 pm), but the food that we did order was delicious. We had the hummus as an app, the shrimp & grits (to die for) and the hot chicken! We shared a slice of cheesecake which was also very good. They tell you they have small plates & you should each have 3-4, but we split everything & had our own hot chicken entrees & it was plenty for the 2 of us.

    The Fat Ham is amazing. I have never craved a salad like I do the mustard greens we started the night with. It is perfect for a date night as you share dishes and enjoy samples of every whiskey imaginable. The peanut butter banana pudding is a spectacular take on an old southern classic.

    It was my fiance's birthday and his favorite food style is southern with a twist. I can tell you that the Fat Ham not only met expectations, but completely exceeded them. We described the the food as high-end southern with flare. The service was impeccable, the plating was fun, the drink list was robust and playful, and the food was outstanding. I highly recommend!

    Overall , I had fun at Fat Ham. The food is comfort food with an innovative twist. This place wouldn't be ideal for large groups since it's a small space. I can say that it's one of the new best places in the university city area right next to U.Pennsylvania. I had the blackened catfish and battered fried white fish. Both were excellent!

    Not certain what the number of this visit was, but we've dined here fequently. The menu continuosly evolves and we noted at least 4 new dishes since our last time here. The pickled shrimp with dijonaise on triangles of toast and the fried whitefish were the two we tried and both are superb. The whitefish is pillowy in its lightness. The collard greens remain the best we have ever had, as does the mustard green salad. There's a lot more to the Fat Ham than the hot chicken -- although that dish always lives up to its reputation. The wine and beer lists are small but very well selected.

    When I first walked into the Fat Ham, I was immediately struck by the casualness of the restaurant that had garnered so much hype. From friends to Craig LaBan, I had high expectations for the Fat Ham. They were not disappointed. For two hungry adults, 4 small plates and a dessert was more than enough. The mustard greens combined with the Mac N' Cheese and the Hot Chicken were a heavenly combo together. The Mac N' Cheese on its own is not quite a innovative as it may sound; however, I must strongly suggest all that can take even a little bit of spice to try the Hot Chicken. The catfish was put over an incredibly delicious sauce and the mustard greens were excellent. For dessert, banana pudding in a jar for a savory unforgettable finish.

    I've been here several times and the food and service have never disappointed. Everything is delicious. And the Fried Chicken is a must try. I love the small plates because you get to experience many different plates without breaking the bank. And the portions are not super tiny. The whiskey bar is also pretty great. Downside--The actual space is small and it can get really noisy if it is full. Don't plan on an intimate conversation. Just enjoy the great food!

    My wife and I eat at restaurants at least twice a week. We appreciate innovative trends in cooking. However, for us, southern style comfort food is not a satisfying dining experience. Fried chicken and barbecue have been simple, delicious and inexpensive foods for decades. When interpreted as an expensive, small plate item, it just doesn't seem worth all the fuss. Fat Ham was good and the food was carefully prepared, but once was enough.

    Fat Ham was a wonderful discovery -- small plate southern-inspired dishes (home cookin' tapas if you will). The offerings can be eclectic like the mustard greens salad, or the asparagus with a delicious gravy. The oyster slider went down easily, along with flavorful grits with shrimp. The whitefish was a winner --light, crisp, with a hint of seasoning that we could not quite place. The hot Chicken is one of their signature dishes and lived up to the billing: crisp breading infused with a hot cayenne sauce that took it to the borderline where delicious meets the threat of burning pain. All in all, the meal was a interesting mix of unusual flavors, well-prepared with good service (very early in the evening).

    I made the reservation based on the Philly Inquirer's photo of the red-hot chicken. It was as incredible as advertised! Other items on the menu - which we selected on the basis of the reviews - were also wonderful. My son surprised me by loving the ricotta appetizer and the fried oyster slider! The only down note: we ordered the night's special grilled pork chop, which the waiter claimed was big enough for two. It definitely was, but we were surprised that we were charged $35 for it, when other items in that category were about $13-14 apiece. Even doubled, because it was large, it was still a shocking amount for a "small plate", and I felt we should have been apprised of the price ahead of time. I felt a bit "taken".

    Great authentic southern food, with a modern twist. Everything we had was scrumptious, from the mustard greens salad, to oyster slider to shrimp and grits. I personally don't think the infamous "hot" chicken is that spicy. I thought drink special: a watermelon infused white bourbon cocktail was weak, as in not very boozy.

    Some of the food items were good, others were a waste of money. Altogether, an entirely acceptable meal but each food item was priced 60% higher than they should have been for the portion size. The service was lacking, the menu was large and disorganized, and the establishment was gross and overcrowded (with about 10 people inside). It was not a bad meal but I would not go back or recommend you waste your time.

    Second visit in a month and can't wait to go back. Have tried at least 2 out of 3 dishes on the menu and they were all delicious. The staff is very helpful for selecting from the small plate offerings. The restaurant is small, with closely packed tables, so don't expect a quiet, relaxing evening. They won't rush you though, and if you are a whiskey drinker, the bar will be like heaven for you.

    small plates portions, which are good, ( we did not like the oyster sliders, they had a very fiishy taste) Our server, Mike was very attentive and knowledgeable in the menu and drink selections. The manager was also very nice. The hot chicken, which Philly magazine raved about was ok, nothing to write home about. The catfish was awesome, but was a very small piece. I could have made a meal on just that. The collard greens and the ricotta cheese app was fantastic. They had a thick cut pork chop special. we did not order it , however the folks next to us did. It was not worth $35.00 and they told us the same. Desserts were just ok , very small slice of red velvet cake Pudding was good. In conclusion, not in a rush to go back.

    The food was absolutely fabulous. Between the two of us we had shrimp and grits with grits like I've never tasted before, asparagus with a luscious sauce, greens like Mama used to make and a three inch piece of blackened catfish. Wait, a three inch piece of catfish? A three inch piece of catfish for $13. Therein lies the rub. In Spain or Italy, small plates, small cost. At most restaurants, even here in Philadelphia, a fish entrée like that would come with the asparagus and a second side such as potatoes or rice, it would be a whole filet and it would be close to what we paid for the two small plates. Not to mention bread for which Fat Ham charges $2. And three shrimp? Definitely an appetizer. Eat first or pay big. Small plates, big prices.

    The Fat Ham is our go to place in Philly for a fun, relaxed, quick dinner. I don't know how the kitchen staff work their magic in such a small space, but they do it consistently. The food is always wonderful (and sometimes "oh my God" good...like the 28 day aged thick-cut pork chop with onion rings that were the special one night...wow was that amazing). Order the mustard green salad. It rocks. The bar is impressive...especially the whiskey section. Staff is attentive, friendly, and helpful.

    We went for 6:30 (early) dinner Saturday. We had a reservation, arrived on time, and ordered the recommended 3 courses each. The server was friendly and the food was good, but the courses came in such quick succession, that we started to feel like we were being gavaged. It was obvious that the staff was more focused on turning tables than on delivering a pleasant dining experience. The poor couple next to us was in and out in 45 minutes. We asked them to slow our dishes down - they did, but not much, and not happily. Even with dessert, we were gone in just over an hour, having had one of the most unpleasant dining experiences ever. Meanwhile, Chef Sbraga stood next to our table typing on phone for most of our dinner. Don't go early!

    We greatly enjoyed our recent meal at The Fat Ham! The food lived up to all the buzz -- we enjoyed the popular oyster sliders, hot chicken, and collards -- but our favorite may have been the chilled pea soup starter. The service was attentive and helpful with suggestions, although the plates arrived a bit more quickly than we would have preferred. The small space was a bit difficult to navigate. I had to move the table just to get out of my seat! The music was also loud in the small space, making serious conversation difficult. It would have been fine for a casual date but not for a special occasion dinner.
