A word from The Fat Ham
Chef and Owner Kevin Sbraga’s
second restaurant brings the heart of the South to the University City neighborhood of
Philadelphia with his signature “no boundaries” approach to cuisine. Drawing inspiration from
the ingredients, culinary traditions, heritage, and homes of the South, Chef Sbraga’s menu
reflects dishes found at Sunday suppers and on country porches, all served alongside The Fat
Ham’s seasonal cocktails.
The inspiration for The Fat Ham’s design comes from houses found in the rustic Southern
countryside, featuring an eclectic combination of glasses, tableware and chairs. While
the pork-centric menu explores heritage breeds and Southern staples such as sorghum butter,
benne seeds, pimento cheese, and Carolina gold rice. Chef Sbraga brings a home-style touch to
the menu with house-made pickles, pepper sauce, buttermilk, and fresh macaroni sharing the menu with reimagined twists on country ham, hot chicken, and boiled peanuts.

  • "The Fat Ham is our go to place in Philly for a fun, relaxed, quick dinner. I don't know how the kitchen staff work their magic in such a small space, but they do it consistently. The food is always wonderful (and sometimes "oh my God" good...like the 28 day aged thick-cut pork chop with onion rings that were the special one night...wow was that amazing). Order the mustard green salad. It rocks. The bar is impressive...especially the whiskey section. Staff is attentive, friendly, and helpful."

I was looking forward to the Blackberry Jam Mint Julep but it had been taken off the menu. I am going back for the Hot Chicken / the oyster sliders and a few other menu goodies. People should know that they DO NOT make substitutions ; the waitstaff was emphatic."

  • "The Fat Ham lived up to its reputation! Yes, we enjoyed the hummus--but the ricotta won out for us. And the bread they are both served with is wonderful. The shrimp and grits was very good as were the collard greens. And the hot chicken? I could eat that every day--it was excellent. The peanut butter banana pudding was SO good. And, all of this great food came with really good service. Michael was attentive but not overbearing, knew what he was talking about, and was just smooth. The atmosphere is industrial--very cool. We did not wait too long between courses. We were anxious to get there and you should be, too."

  • "First of all the food is amazing and the staff is incredible and very helpful - they even ask if you have any food allergies which I think is very thoughtful. The only annoyance was the very loud group at the bar behind me and my family. We had to shout over each other and found ourselves getting very annoyed - once they left and went to another part of the restaurant (which is very small), we could still hear them but it was much better. Overall, the food is great and if the loud company wasn't there it was have been a 9/10!"

  • "Great pre-game cocktails on the patio. Perfect Palate pleaser. Plates I never normally order were outstanding! Mustard Green Salad, Collared Greens, Hot Chicken, Catfish. Order them all and there is enough to share for 2. If you are near U. Penn you have to stop. Bartenders, Wait Staff, and Maetre D, outstanding!"

  • "Have wanted to try this restaurant since first hearing about it. My family and I went in with high expectations, and we were not disappointed. Everything we tried (4 of us, lots of shared plates) was delicious and unique. Many of the plates are spiced with heat, which ended up being a little too much for my 12 year old daughter (a true foodie like the rest of us). My wife, son and I were fine with the heat. We will definitely return."

  • "Great food, but overpriced for Philly. Gorgeous interior, nice vibe. On the whole, the food was quite good. Our group of 4 dined on southern hummus (unusual and excellent!), shrimp & grits (butter loaded and probably our favorite of the evening), blackened catfish (excellent), asparagus (fantastic), collards (ok) and carolina rice (underwhelming and super small portion), oyster slider (good, but not unique) and the hot chicken. Hot chicken was disappointing-- the exterior had a nice crunch & heat, but the inside tasted like steamed or almost boiled chicken. Fednuts is in a different league. Popeyes is better. Service was disappointing. Drinks did not arrive until well after food. Waiter chastised us for not ordering more food."

  • "Went to the Fat Ham for a friend's birthday. It was very sweet that the restaurant gave her a birthday card. Everything was delicious and we would all return. We thought the food came out exceptionally fast and we would have enjoyed some time in between courses to discuss what we just ate!. I also thought the fried chicken was yummy bit could be served a touch less spicy...or at least diners could have the option to have it toned down. Still planning on returning though!"

There's flavor there--smoke, vinegar, and spices--but it was difficult to discern over the spice. Cocktails were delicious, and I would love to have a few on the small patio."

  • "Small. Maybe 24-30 seats at low tables and another 12-16 at the bar and high tops. Make sure to make a reservation. Even in a restaurant-saturated city like Philly, this is a restaurant worth visiting. It's not out of the way even though it's in West Philly, but it's not as easy to get to as the restaurants in Center City. Short walk either across the Schuylkill on Walnut or from 30th St. Station via the regional rail or Market-Frankford (blue) subway line. The front of the house is organized in an interesting way. The food was stunning. I would definitely return. Very reasonably priced for a restaurant of this caliber. Also, very laid back and relaxing environment. It was just such a FUN dining experience."

  • "Welcoming and efficient service as soon as you walk in the door. Chef Sbraga's menu is a delicious take on a southern meal. Three of us for dinner, including my 16 yr old daughter.. She could not stop raving about the food. All items we had (which was most of the menu) were delicious. Some of our favorites include the oyster sliders and the smoked ricotta. My boyfriend and I are both chefs in the city and we loved our evening. We would recommend the restaurant to anyone looking for a great meal in a beautiful & comfortable setting with knowledgeable staff."

  • "The food was wonderful. The asparagus had a divine sauce. My dinner companion loved the fried oyster. The collards were sophisticated. I wanted to sop us the liquor but there's no bread. I needed bread. A biscuit. The bone-in pork chop was large, large. Plenty for two. Not too cool to suck on the bone. The bone was very enjoyable. Pig heaven. The dessert was tasty but could be more creatively plated. There's little that actually "downhome" about the food at The Fat Ham. It's a homage to downhome that creates its own memories that will bring me back again."

  • "This is a great alternative to the more formal and way more expensive dinner I had at Sbraga and the food was equally delicious. I cannot say enough good things about the hot chicken. It is a must order item!! The shrimp and grits were also amazing as was the pulled pork. My friend really wanted to try the cabbage dish, which I was initially not wild about but it turned out to be a suprisingly tasty dish and I was glad we had not ordered something else in its place. Be sure to try one of the speciality cocktails, too. They were well conceived and very tasty! We ordered six dishes and shared dessert--not a dud among them."

  • "I have not a single complaint and considered I was on a eating journey the day I ate at The Fat Ham and gave my other reservations a 1 star review (horribly overhyped brunch spot) and a 2 star review (extremely famous local chef), this was a treat. Service was knowledgable (helpful since I have a food restriction), food was fantastic (I literally can't wait to go back) and the space was cute (not too big, not too small). My only regret is having to tell anyone about it because I don't want to have to wait for a reservation!"

  • "Sbraga doesn't disappoint. As a lover of collard greens, who prepares them very well at home, these were to die for. Very flavorful and tender. I ended up ordering a second round. Shrimp and grits, carolina gold rice, blackened catfish and pecan pie were all very well prepared and enjoyable. We also order red velvet cake but I was not as impressed as was with the rest of meal. The portion sizes are very, very small so even though the prices look reasonable, your tab will quickly add up."

  • "This is a small plates restaurant and everything we had was satisfying. The chilled pea soup was superb and their already-famous hummus was excellent. The second courses we had were whitefish (just a breaded flounder over some pickled veggies-- not bad but nothing special) and the catfish (plump and a bit spicy-- excellent!). We closed with the signature dish - the hot chicken with some mac and cheese on the side. The chicken was as advertised-- very spicy but very good and the server (great service throughout our meal) brought us some extra ranch sauce to help. The mac and cheese was the only disappointment on the entire menu-- nothing special taste wise and the portion is kind of a joke-- very tiny. I would go back!"

  • "The meal was a taste treat from beginning to end...food is artistically presented and cooked to bring out the delicacy of the dish without sacrificing flavor...hot chicken is hot, hot, hot...my mouth calmed down about 20 minutes after eating it...a dollop sour cream would be a welcome addition to put out the fire...attentive, friendly, and courteous service. Good beers on tap as well as a nice, workable wine list...I plan to go back again and again! An excellent experience for myself and my two companions....don't wait, go there!"

  • "The food was great! My group had oyster sliders, pulled-pork, chicken, mac & cheese, and the shrimps and grits, which all blew my mind with flavor. The pulled-pork was unexpectedly delicious and the chicken was very spicy and flavorful. The waiter was also very kind and helpful. While the food was great and the server was nice, the restaurant was very small and a tad cramped. Every table was no more than a foot away from another. Furthermore, though the food was extremely good, I was not a fan of the "tapas" style where all of the portions are terribly small and ridiculously expensive. My bill came to $72 for a group of four, and a couple of us still walked away hungry. Overall, good food, small portions, and high prices."
