My friend Patrick typically runs the bar, so I'd heard about it's atmosphere and selection ahead of time. Despite him being out of town, I decided to try it anyway. At first glance from the outside, it looks like its namesake, an old farm house in the middle of one of the busiest parts of the city. Once inside, there is a very classy yet casual setting. We chose to sit outside on the patio and were able to have conversation without feeling as though we were talking over anyone. Our server was amazing despite us taking 20 minutes of conversation before even cracking the menus. We did select a nice array of menu items to sample and the food was very good. We were there celebrating my daughter's graduation from nursing school and the server brought us complimentary champagne which saved the experience for me. I always loved the food, but it became hard to get a table - so, happy to see the option to book on Open Table.
Brought a vegetarian friend who had never been before & we had a lovely time. Food is still prepared w/ care and made from very high quality seasonal, local ingredients.
The highlights were the trout, as well as the asparagus ravioli - not to mention the lovely wine from Chehalem vineyards.
Service is friendly and low key.

Only small downfalls were the asparagus fritters needed more asparagus
and the fried spetzel needed more flavor, maybe using orzo instead mixed

The table was already set up for us including the high chair for the baby. We had the lamb (which was braised lamb shoulder that day), the veggie burger (as seen on Food Network), the asparagus ravioli, and the duck confit as an appetizer. The entrees were amazing, we all loved it! The duck confit was just okay. I've not had duck confit at other places so it might have been exceptional comparatively, I have no way of knowing. My 10 mo old baby loved the duck. It was the perfect texture for him to easily eat it without teeth. So overall we thought it was a win! The restaurant was pretty busy, surprising for a Wednesday evening, and although we had reservations were not sure we would be seated on time. We were seated immediately and although there was a lot of activity including a large group in one of the rooms somehow the acoustics and locations of tables allowed us to easily converse and hear each other in spite of the many other patrons. Wine list was good, dessert was awesome! they have a large outdoor seating area which we plan to visit when it becomes warmer. I went with a group of girls for a birthday dinner and we all loved the food. Between us all, we had the gnocchi, the veggie burger, the trout, & the rabbit stew...I tried bites of them all and they were all superb. Also tried the spicy hazelnuts and pickle plate...delicious as well. The atmosphere was nice and they accomodated us well, despite their kind of smaller dining area (which makes it intimate if you were just going on a date). And above all, I want to rave about the service...that is what made our experience so great. The service was above outstanding...which is refreshing these days. We sat outside on a perfect 70 degree day. I had the lamb chops , which were cooked ( grilled to perfection) and kale salad. There were three of us and two of the three dishes seemed like good portions, but I ordered paella. It was more like jambalaya than paella but it was delicious but the portion was way to small for the cost. I was not full and I am only a 5 foot five male and only slightly overweight. Also, I think that the restaurant should serve fresh rolls or bread with olive oil. Most restaurants in this price range do this. At this price, I would only eat here on special occasions - this was our wedding anniversary.
I did appreciate that I received an email reminder about my reservation. I have been to The Farm Cafe 4 times in the two years I've lived in Portland and each time, enjoyed everything I've ordered. The food service has, in my experience, been quite fast. The venue is fine for a group of 4 or 5 or smaller. It's good for intimate conversation. The bar and outdoor eating area in the back is beautiful. The atmostphere is cozy. The service is fine. We had the cheese plate (would have liked a few cheeses rather than just one, but it was good), the lamb (amazing!), and the trout (very good). The food is of high quality, which is reflected in the taste and thoughtful presentation. Being in an old Victorian house makes for an endearing and comfortable space. More than once, I have envisioned living there! The house is that fantastic. Because it is a house, space is limited but making reservations is so easy. The limited space makes for a more attentive wait staff, as well.
