Diner Reviews
  • "Outstanding 5-star service. Enjoyed a late dinner at a quieter moment in the restaurant which gave us time to chat with employees, which always adds to the ambiance."

  • "This is a must do while visiting Louisville. The service was outstanding and the food is 5 stars. Make sure you save room for desert."

  • "The English Grill at the Brown hotel feels like stepping back in time. The decor is classic 1920-30s, but the menu continues to keep up with the times. The Chef's deliver new dishes that are excellent and always have "The Hot Brown", for those who like the classics. I will be back!"

  • "Walking into this beautiful restaurant takes you back to a era of fine dining with floor to ceiling wood walls, classic 1930-40's music quietly playing in the back ground, fresh roses on the table, and a level of service you can only find in a much larger city. My wife and I enjoyed a three course meal to get the full experience. The twist on the wedge salad that they offer was delicious, buttermilk dressing and country ham. The pork belly appetizer was also very delicious with bourbon caramel sauce. For dinner my wife enjoyed the pork tenderloin, which she can not stop raving about. I had the beef filet with the foie gras on top, which was delicious with ever bite. We both look forward to going back very soon."

  • "I always ask for Victoria as she has been with the restaurant for 17 years. She knows the menu and you can rely on her to help you select the perfect meal. Never miss the Hot Brown dish! This is a KY classic. We tried to duck dish and it was good. The grouper was outstanding. The outstanding service always makes for a perfect evening."

  • "Lovely atmosphere, good service, sauces and seasonings created flavor combinations that tried you hard. Out of our appetizers and 4 entrees (other than the scallop) there wasn't really anything that we just couldn't wait for the next bite. Disappointing."

  • "My wife and I enjoyed great food and wonderful service here. The staff was interesting with some great stories about the history since 1928 here. Piano music from the bar area filtered in during dinner to create a special ambiance."

  • "A girlfriend and I paired The English Grille with an evening at Actor's Theatre for a double treat. Neither of us had been to the restaurant for several years. We had our memories gently jogged by the quiet, subdued atmosphere (quite a contrast to the wedding reception going on nearby), and the delectable food. We each vowed to order what each other had at our Saturday evening feast, in our next visit to the English Grille, which will be when we go see the Nutcracker together. We may even go with it's not a special occasion. The merlot we paired with our meal was excellent, as was the tenderloin and the namesake dish, the Hot Brown (well worth the million or so calories)."

  • "The English Grill is an exceptional restaurant that has fabulous food with a level of service rarely found into today's world. Harkens to the time when dinner was a sit down affair. Go - take your time - enjoy!!!!"

  • "The experience I had at the English Grill was everything I would expect when dining at an upper scale restaurant. I am from the Indianapolis area, and found the English Grill to be equal to St. Elmos, the Capital Grill and the Columbia Club. Our server was Derek, and he did an outstanding job. And I would also say that for the entire staff, as they all made our dining experience a very rewarding experience. We stayed at the Seelbach Hotel, but ate at the Brown both Friday and Saturday evening. Next time we will probably stay at the Brown."

  • "It has been a while since I dined here but the quality of the food and the service has not changed at all. It is still one of Louisville's top restaurants. Great wine and spirts list as well. Our waiter provided great recommendations. I always appreciate when the servers are enthusiastic about the food."

  • "The English Grill was outstanding! The food was incredible, very rich with surprisingly generous portions. I had the pork chop which was delicious and tender. My husband had the Hot Brown and would not stop talking about how great it was. The service was very attentive and very knowledgable about the food. They also had an extensive bourbon list, which was great. The only thing to remember is that the English Grill is not a casual environment, which may not appeal to everyone. Highly recommended!"

  • "From beginning to end our visit was first rate. Our waiter was completely knowledgeable about the fare and the wine list and was ready and eager to answer my questions. It is not often at all that my husband and myself have a chance to dine at such a fine restaurant and sometimes can feel a little intimidated by the offerings. The ease and friendliness which exuded a refined Southern charm is what put this restaurant over the top for me. Lots of restaurants can offer very appetizing food but do so in such a cold, stuffy manner that the experience is dampened. Our waiter was truly pleased when we were pleased. That is exactly how it should be. Well done!"

  • "As is always the case, food was terrific (scallop appetizer and scallop entrée were outstanding) and service was impeccable. They need to start selling that flatbread at retail somewhere. it's addictive!"

  • "I took my family for dinner. The dining room is beautiful, the service and food extraordinary. It was wonderful to sit and talk in a normal tone of voice without screaming at one another, then straining to hear. It was a wonderful evening altogether and we highly recommend it."

  • "Great service and great food. We started with the Duck Confit appetizer and it was very tasty. My husband had the Hot Brown (which was invented by this restaurant) and it was the best he had ever eaten. Huge portion he couldn't eat it all. I had the Filet and it was melt in your mouth and the sauce was mouthwatering. We both finished with cappuccino and shared the Chocolate Striptease. Most of which we had to take home as it was so rich. The restaurant was nice and quiet and the atmosphere was lovely. They have a huge list of bourbons and an excellent wine list. I can't wait to visit there again."

  • "We like the English Grill, because we love the hot brown, they use real turkey in it and it is really good, it's a little pricey at $22 and that's all you get with it, the iced tea prices are absurd, $4 for a glass of iced tea is way off base, we would love to eat here more often but it's just too pricey, if you like wine and spirits you would like it because the wine list is at least an inch thick and the menu for food is only 2 pages."

  • "This is a historic, beautiful restaurant, so I will admit my expectations were high. But from beginning to end I was disappointed. No one answered the phone when I tried to make a reservation (I called 3 times around 5:30 pm). I was finally able to book a reservation online through Open Table. When we arrived at 7:00 pm, there was no one at the hostess stand and the restaurant was practically empty. If we hadn't seen one table in use, we would have thought it was closed. The service was OK, but they forgot to bring our appetizers. Overall, the food was good, but not exceptional. And, though I usually appreciate smaller amounts, the portions left even the children at our table still hungry. Definitely not worth the money!"

  • "My husband and I had an overnight away from our children, and the English Grill made us feel like royalty. They were extremely kind, helpful, attentive, and eager to please. They are extremely professional without being stuffy. I had a question about the ingredients of my entrée, and the chef himself (I assumed he was the chef) came out to consult with me before he prepared my food. Amazing! If you love quality hand crafted creative dishes and are willing to try new pairings and presentations, this place is IT! I had the monkfish with curried bananas and a chickpea cake and carrots. Fantastic! The chef also sent out free little appetizers, a cleansing of the palate type thing, before our meal. Highly recommend!"

  • "My wife and I went there for our Anniversery and were seated in the dining room next to a table of 5 men. Four were wearing tee shirts with writing on them. Two were wearing shorts and one gym shorts. Apparently they made a fuss when told about the dress code and it was a slow night. I complained and they moved us so I would not have to look at their redneck clothing while we dined. The staff and service was good but they cannot allow this if they want to keep their standards. It's not about the rednecks, it's about the other customers."
