Diner Reviews
  • "We like the English Grill, because we love the hot brown, they use real turkey in it and it is really good, it's a little pricey at $22 and that's all you get with it, the iced tea prices are absurd, $4 for a glass of iced tea is way off base, we would love to eat here more often but it's just too pricey, if you like wine and spirits you would like it because the wine list is at least an inch thick and the menu for food is only 2 pages."

  • "This is a historic, beautiful restaurant, so I will admit my expectations were high. But from beginning to end I was disappointed. No one answered the phone when I tried to make a reservation (I called 3 times around 5:30 pm). I was finally able to book a reservation online through Open Table. When we arrived at 7:00 pm, there was no one at the hostess stand and the restaurant was practically empty. If we hadn't seen one table in use, we would have thought it was closed. The service was OK, but they forgot to bring our appetizers. Overall, the food was good, but not exceptional. And, though I usually appreciate smaller amounts, the portions left even the children at our table still hungry. Definitely not worth the money!"

  • "This was our second visit to the English Grill in the past year. Both visits were outstanding in food quality and service. Very relaxing evening. We look forward to our next visit on our next trip to Louisville."

  • "We had a lovely 39th anniversary dinner. The food was prepared perfectly as was the service. The presentation of each course was beautiful. The dinner matched the beautiful decor of the historic hotel."

  • "My husband and I had an overnight away from our children, and the English Grill made us feel like royalty. They were extremely kind, helpful, attentive, and eager to please. They are extremely professional without being stuffy. I had a question about the ingredients of my entrée, and the chef himself (I assumed he was the chef) came out to consult with me before he prepared my food. Amazing! If you love quality hand crafted creative dishes and are willing to try new pairings and presentations, this place is IT! I had the monkfish with curried bananas and a chickpea cake and carrots. Fantastic! The chef also sent out free little appetizers, a cleansing of the palate type thing, before our meal. Highly recommend!"

  • "My wife and I went there for our Anniversery and were seated in the dining room next to a table of 5 men. Four were wearing tee shirts with writing on them. Two were wearing shorts and one gym shorts. Apparently they made a fuss when told about the dress code and it was a slow night. I complained and they moved us so I would not have to look at their redneck clothing while we dined. The staff and service was good but they cannot allow this if they want to keep their standards. It's not about the rednecks, it's about the other customers."

  • "We have celebrated our anniversary for 20 straight years at the English Grill. The food is always phenomenal. The serve is incredible. The menu has the freshest selection from the soups, salads, seafood, and steaks. There is always a delicious vegetarian option. The staff provides the finest service and no request cannot be achieved."

  • "The food was all that reviews said it was. Our server was very attentive but not smothering. Really appreciated having complimentary valet parking especially considering the amount we spent for the meal. Wonderful experience and we'll definitely eat there again when we are in Louisville the next time."

  • "We took our son and his Grandparents to the English Grill for a post-graduation dinner. Our waitress joined in the celebration and served our son first and made sure he was the center of attention. The food was amazing. The service was attentive. It was the perfect way to celebrate his success."

  • "A beautiful night out. Thomas was an excellent, responsive server. Every single dish was perfect! I had to try the classic Hot Brown at its home. It was clearly the freshest, most delightful I have ever had. My companions also were impressed by the lamb and the filet. A lovely night out."

  • "We stayed at the hotel while on a road trip, and it was a spur of the moment decision, so when we decided to dine at the hotel our expectations were low. What a pleasant surprise! Good service, good food, good wine list. Selections were not extensive, but there was something for everyone. We had a fish and a filet mignon, both were well presented and prepared, and the salad was unique and fresh. Highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "We dined at the English Grille since we were staying at The Brown. The menu is a tad limited but each dish is composed excellently. The chef allowed for a substitution which was appreciated. The scallops were rich and well prepared, the filet also perfectly cooked. Lively crowd. The diners dressed more casually than I expected given the formal dining room. The waiter made an excellent wine selection. A classic Louisville experience. "

  • "We spent our 37th wedding anniversary evening at the English Grill. First, we sat at the bar in the huge and beautiful lobby for a martini. The atmosphere was classy and ornate - like going back in time. Then we had a wonderful dinner and bottle of wine. The appetizers were exquisite, the filet was perfect and my wife's scallops were excellent. The service was 5 star and on the spot, but not annoying. "

  • "When I made my reservation through Open Table, I noted that we were celebrating our 15th anniversary. The maitre d and our waited each wished us a happy anniversary. Dinner was wonderful! Great food. For dessert we were presented with a special chocolate dessert, with Happy 15th Anniversary written in chocolate around the plate! It was truly special!"

  • "The English Grill was a very nice restaurant with excellent service. My wife and I were out for a romantic evening without the kids. The ambiance was nice and service was great. However, there were no elements that set this restaurant apart from other restaurant experiences. The food was good but not outstanding. From being in the hotel/restaurant industry it was apparent that this classic hotel dining establishment is struggling to keep up with the new food and beverage scene in town. I would recommend the English Grill for a nice quiet night out but I would love to see this restaurant brush up on it's details."

  • "Probably the best service I have had in a dining establishment ( excluding 4 Season's which had 5 waiters per table which was a bit much). Our server was awesome, pleasant, and went over and above his duties."

  • "I has lunch at Churchill Downs and was so impressed with the Hot Brown I ordered it for dinner too. It was disappointing as compared to the other. My husband ordered the lamb and had four tiny lamb chops, very expensive for the amount given . We chose to eat there as we were staying at the hotel. The soup and appetizers were great."

  • "The experience was what you'd expect from The Brown Hotel. My only complaint was that the hot brown was a bit dry, but I"d definitely come back- just order a different entree."

  • "What a lovely evening at The historic Brown Hotel! From drinks in the ornate lobby bar to the fabulous food and service-the whole evening was memorable. I would highly recommend this place if you are looking for a more elegant evening of dining than the 4th Street area. I especially appreciated the excellent service and knowledgable staff for tidbits about the Hotel history and for suggestions on the dining selections."

  • "Food and service was wonderful. Rolls had been out too long, but that's my only complaint. I had been there one other time and it was impeccable all around. I actually went back for the rolls because they are to die for, so I was disappointed when they came out kind of stale."

  • "The food was good, but there's much better to be had in Louisville...especially for the price. Is a true hotel restaurant, so dress is all over the board. Kind of takes the luster off going out for a special meal when some diners are in jeans and polo shirt. Would rather go to other fine dining establishments in Louisville where native Louisvillians go and dress for the occasion."

  • "Beautiful setting and wonderful staff. But valentine's menu was limited, sirloin offering was tough and every other course had shellfish or mushrooms - the 2 things my wife won't eat."
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "predetermined menu for valentines day. disappointed we didn't order off of regular menu. The trout my wife ordered was good but my choice of meat was only sirloin ( no filet ). The sirloin tasted good but no steak knife provided and I had to saw through the meat with regular table knife. The romeo and juliet dessert was a flakey, croissant-like pastry which had no taste but the rhubarb and strawberries that came with it were good. we ordered their signature dessert (the striptease) and it was the chocolate, great tasting dessert we were looking for. I would like to go back one day and order from their regular menu and get the kind of meal I know the english grill is known for"

  • "The food was excellent. It really was the best filet mignon I've ever had. So tender you could cut it with a fork. The side dishes were amazing also. I will definitely go back!"

  • "The food was pretty average - and quite expensive. One of our diners did not have a good experience. Her wine glass was dirty. They brought her fish instead of the filet she ordered. it was one bad thing after another. They comped her meal, and threw in dessert. But the experience was very disappointing."
