Diner Reviews
  • "When I made my reservation through Open Table, I noted that we were celebrating our 15th anniversary. The maitre d and our waited each wished us a happy anniversary. Dinner was wonderful! Great food. For dessert we were presented with a special chocolate dessert, with Happy 15th Anniversary written in chocolate around the plate! It was truly special!"

  • "The English Grill was a very nice restaurant with excellent service. My wife and I were out for a romantic evening without the kids. The ambiance was nice and service was great. However, there were no elements that set this restaurant apart from other restaurant experiences. The food was good but not outstanding. From being in the hotel/restaurant industry it was apparent that this classic hotel dining establishment is struggling to keep up with the new food and beverage scene in town. I would recommend the English Grill for a nice quiet night out but I would love to see this restaurant brush up on it's details."

  • "I am in my mid-forties. I felt as if I was taking my wife to the prom because we were the youngest there. The food is fabulous, but the restaurant feels stuck in some by gone era. Go enjoy the food, forget people watching."

  • "Probably the best service I have had in a dining establishment ( excluding 4 Season's which had 5 waiters per table which was a bit much). Our server was awesome, pleasant, and went over and above his duties."

  • "I has lunch at Churchill Downs and was so impressed with the Hot Brown I ordered it for dinner too. It was disappointing as compared to the other. My husband ordered the lamb and had four tiny lamb chops, very expensive for the amount given . We chose to eat there as we were staying at the hotel. The soup and appetizers were great."

  • "The experience was what you'd expect from The Brown Hotel. My only complaint was that the hot brown was a bit dry, but I"d definitely come back- just order a different entree."

  • "The English Grill is a Louisville treasure. Food and service is excellent. Very classic and elegant but not pretentious. Great place for romantic dinners to sophisticated business meetings. Love the bar area."

  • "What a lovely evening at The historic Brown Hotel! From drinks in the ornate lobby bar to the fabulous food and service-the whole evening was memorable. I would highly recommend this place if you are looking for a more elegant evening of dining than the 4th Street area. I especially appreciated the excellent service and knowledgable staff for tidbits about the Hotel history and for suggestions on the dining selections."

  • "Food and service was wonderful. Rolls had been out too long, but that's my only complaint. I had been there one other time and it was impeccable all around. I actually went back for the rolls because they are to die for, so I was disappointed when they came out kind of stale."

  • "Very classic and historic. Great food, outstanding service. The GM Brandon touched every table and made us feel very welcomed"

  • "Both of our salads and entrees were delicious, and the presentation was so artistic! I had told the server it was our anniversary and they brought us a Complimentary dessert with a personalized greeting - wow ❤ We are looking forward to our next evening at the Grille...."

  • "The food was good, but there's much better to be had in Louisville...especially for the price. Is a true hotel restaurant, so dress is all over the board. Kind of takes the luster off going out for a special meal when some diners are in jeans and polo shirt. Would rather go to other fine dining establishments in Louisville where native Louisvillians go and dress for the occasion."

  • "predetermined menu for valentines day. disappointed we didn't order off of regular menu. The trout my wife ordered was good but my choice of meat was only sirloin ( no filet ). The sirloin tasted good but no steak knife provided and I had to saw through the meat with regular table knife. The romeo and juliet dessert was a flakey, croissant-like pastry which had no taste but the rhubarb and strawberries that came with it were good. we ordered their signature dessert (the striptease) and it was the chocolate, great tasting dessert we were looking for. I would like to go back one day and order from their regular menu and get the kind of meal I know the english grill is known for"

  • "Beautiful setting and wonderful staff. But valentine's menu was limited, sirloin offering was tough and every other course had shellfish or mushrooms - the 2 things my wife won't eat."

  • "The food was excellent. It really was the best filet mignon I've ever had. So tender you could cut it with a fork. The side dishes were amazing also. I will definitely go back!"

  • "The food was pretty average - and quite expensive. One of our diners did not have a good experience. Her wine glass was dirty. They brought her fish instead of the filet she ordered. it was one bad thing after another. They comped her meal, and threw in dessert. But the experience was very disappointing."

  • "What a wonderful dining experience. The food and service are tops! I would definitely dine here again. Can't say enough great things about our waiter and the chef. If I could change only one thing, it would be the lighting. It is super bright, especially if you are out for a romantic dinner. Some mood lighting would make this place perfect!"

  • "Relatively expensive for Louisville, but well worth it. First-rate service, excellent food. Great spot for a special occasion dinner. And they ought to box up the kitchen-made crackers that come with the bread basket and sell them in the hotel gift shop."

  • "I have dined at the English Grill before and was looking forward to the KY Vegetable entre...it was ravioli. I have a wheat allergy. I went with the salmon and was disappointed...it was not not great, just okay. For $33 I want to be impressed, I was not."

  • "After I proposed to my girlfriend, I brought her to the English Grill, where we were treated like royalty. The food was delicious and the service was outstanding. They met every ridiculous special request I asked for and went over and beyond by offering us a starter and dessert, compliments of the chef. Our evening was magical."

  • "Living in the Louisville area I have never experienced the original Hot Brown. I wasn't expected a rich, filling, delicious, filling entrée. My spouse ordered the pork chop. This was the best pork chop we both have ever tasted. We are constantly trying new dining experiences. This was one of our best dinners yet. Highly recommend! Also the mojito was out of this world."

  • "The server (Thomas) was very friendly and helpful, but our food/drinks were late coming, the staff seemed uneasy and unfamiliar with the routine, my Hot Brown the toast was burned and overall not as good as previous times, the filet was not as favorable as other restaurants in town, our dessert was forever in coming. We arrived at 6:30 thinking we would have plenty of time for a 9 o'clock movie - we had to rush to making the showing. Seeing the inefficient staff made the other guests uncomfortable. This wasn't an enjoyable, relaxed experience."

  • "I have been to this location before and wanted to bring a guest from out of town. Upon walking to the hostess stand, the host did not offer a smile or friendly facial expression. He simply looked at us and said, "I will be right with you." After a few minutes passed, he came back, saw our reservations and proceeded to sit us. The dining area had a large group sitting in the middle. This group was having a great time which lead to the noise level being a little high. Our server was polite and very patient as we did take a bit longer just to look over the menu in between talking. I was disappointed in the restaurant as I know it could have been better. My guest enjoyed the company more than the establishment so all in all I guess I did good."

  • "The English Grill is the epitome of fine dining with panache. We started our meal with the Spiced Sweet-potato bisque (superb) and fresh greens. For our main entrees, my wife chose the Salmon while I enjoyed the Sea Bass; both prepared and presented with excellence. We completed our gustatory experience with the chocolate pecan souffle. The wine list was excellent, and the service by our waiter George was outstanding. George was knowledgeable, polite, and very well mannered. It was a great way to celebrate the start of a New Year! Thank you. We look forward to returning again soon. I have already recommended your restaraunt to a number of family and friends."

  • "While we have said we have always had a great meal at the Brown, the food by the new chef was probabaly the best yet.The filet was done to perfection and the seafood entry was to die for."

  • "Outstanding and attentive staff. Excellent menu and ambience. Worth the effort to just sit in the bar for a cocktail to take in the hotel and slide over to the restaurant to capture the whole Brown experience."
