A relaxed setting, great food and service!6/11/2013 12:00:00 AMElegant and MemorableThe decor was old world and elegant. The hostess was warm and sincere in welcoming us. Our waiter, Thomas, made our whole dining experience a memorable one. The entire staff was attentive and genuinely concerned for our comfort and enjoyment of the meal. And the food was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. There were so many wonderful choices on their menu in any price range and our selections proved to be perfect. Not being from Louisville, I hope to be able to return and enjoy this wonderful southern hospitality and cuisine again soon.6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMOutstanding food! Each dish we had was wonderful. The chef is creative and puts thought into each dish. The result is unique and delicious food! Service was great.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMSalmon was excellent. NotSalmon was excellent. Not very crowded. Visited for our anniversary and was presented a complementary chocolate mousse dessert. (Called a "strip tease" b/c had chocolate rose petals with rum inside that was lit on fire and the petals "stripped" down and melted on the cake.).5/30/2013 12:00:00 AMOld World EleganceI took my wife to Louisville for her 40th birthday. Neither of us had ever visited the city, nor did we know much about it. We struck gold with The English Grill on our first night. Service was wonderful. The ambience of the historic Brown Hotel and its restaurant is for people who really want to know what life was like for the well-heeled in the 1920s. I told our waiter that it was our first time to the restaurant and that I was having trouble deciding between three of the entrees - he did something I've never seen before and actually recommended the dish that happened to be the least expensive of my candidates. He said that a newbie like me should definitely try the Hot Brown. I did, and it was wonderful.5/30/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful ExperienceHusband and I went for his birthday and enjoyed everything! Best service I have received at a restaurant in a while. I ate the pork chop which was fabulous! Since we are new to Kentucky, the main reason for the restaurant choice was to experience the original Kentucky Hot Brown. This sandwich was worth every bit of the hype! We did not have any appetizers because I am a picky eater and do not eat seafood, but I could not them tasting anything less than amazing! The servers were attentive yet they allowed us to enjoy the meal.
Overall, fabulous experience!5/29/2013 12:00:00 AMExceptionalThe staff and service was exceptional. The wine list covered a nice range. The food presentation was very nice. Interesting salads and great choice of traditional main courses; the food was delicious. The room was quiet, which was nice, but then we were early diners the evening we went, so not many other patrons.5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMEnglish Grill still fit and properMy wife and I recently dined at the English Grill at the Brown Hotel. it had been some time since I had visited. The ambiance and service was outstanding. We had a great choice of entrees and all the courses were timed for good dinner flow without waiting or rushing. If you have a special occasion or dinner before a show, check it out!5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMMothers Day BrunchThe Mothers Day brunch was fabulous and we will definitely consider going again for other meals.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMBest HOT BROWN I've Ever Had...This is a pretty fancy place, not cheap, but worth the experience. It very quiet and romantic for us, but we went fairly late on a Tuesday night.
The cocktails were made perfectly. The appetizer of Gnocchi was delicious, and of course, their famous Hot Brown was amazing. I couldn't put my fork down. My girlfriend ordered a Hot Brown from a brewery in downtown Louisville the night before, so I tried it, and there was no comparison.
The service was great as well. The server seemed a little short with us at first, but as the night went on, he opened up and chatted our ear off and gave us our dessert on the house. The bus boy was very friendly too. Highly recommend this place.5/7/2013 12:00:00 AMA Derby CelebrationI surprised my wife with a trip to the Kentucky Derby. It was the first time we had been there. After doing a little homework, I made reservations on line at The English Grill. Of course, Derby Day was booked but Thursday was available, so we took it. Everything was perfect. The beet salad, the pork chop, the salmon, the flaming chocolate dessert, the service- all spectacular. Even the reservation person was extremely helpful on how to get there, where to park and how best to fight the traffic. The parade finished at 7:00 and dinner at The Brown immediately following. Life is good.5/2/2013 12:00:00 AMKentucky Derby Fantasy!Don't miss this experience! It was the dining highlight of our Derby trip! We landed in Louisville and headed straight to the Brown Hotel. Although we were delayed by parade traffic they held our reservation until 9:30PM! We were amazed by the hospitality- the hostess was so obliging and our waiter was polished and a pro! We met the General Manager of the hotel and The young new chef at the English Grill gave us a tour of his kitchen and served us herbs from his own organic farm. Cuisine: the meal was one of the best I have ever eaten! Simply a great, world-class dining experience.5/2/2013 12:00:00 AMWe had a fabulous time atWe had a fabulous time at the English Grill. We had initially intended to have the famous Kentucky Hot Brown where it was invented, but found they were having a Derby tasting menu preview with wine pairings. We couldn't resist after the server showed us the menu. It was outstanding. Since we visited during the start of the Derby celebration, it was probably a special time for tasting and not something that would be occurring often.4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMWe will be back. Rooms areWe will be back. Rooms are just right. Phillip at the Grill took good care of us as he has others for 37 years. This was a great dining experience!!3/22/2013 12:00:00 AMHIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!The food is so good!!!! The only thing I didn't like was the crepe dessert. But the dinner and appetizer FAR made the meal worth it. That and along with the server Kenneth. It was great being pampered!!3/16/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent bar and bourbonExcellent bar and bourbon list. Soup was excellent, entree was good but not great. Maitre d and Manager were very friendly and offered amenities. Server didn't come back to check on food but one time. Great bar for a bourbon drinker. Every other upscale restaurant I've been to in Louisville has much better food than this one.3/16/2013 12:00:00 AMWe were celebrating a birthdayWe were celebrating a birthday and an anniversary. We were surprised with two beautiful flaming desserts that we all enjoyed and which made the occasion a memorable one.
