Diner Reviews
  • "I went with a friend for brunch on a recent Sunday. The only other times I have been here were to have drinks at the bar, late at night, or dinner once. The dinner experience was good. For the brunch experience, the restaurant was very short-handed. The waitress was stressed, which was understandable. Many tables seemed unhappy, and there were lots of people waiting at the door to be seated while the hostess seemed MIA. Anyway, there should have been two people waiting tables that day, and the hostess concentrating on the door. I felt bad for the one waitress, who was doing the best she could. The food was great, though the wait for everything was a bit too long. I was not in a rush though and didn't mind, but clearly some tables did."

  • "On weeknights when it's not so crowded, this is a fine UWS burger joint. But on weekends, way too loud for comfort."

  • "The northern part of the UWS that The Ellington inhabits is a veritable food desert. There are few good restaurants in the area -- there is one other we frequent -- and The Ellington provides a welcome oasis. My friend and I had a delicious and inexpensive lunch al fresco yesterday -- the lunch special is only $12. It was a beautiful day that was improved by our experience at this restaurant. It is terrific for lunch, and we intend to try it soon for dinner."

  • "Came here with a party of 14 on a Sunday for brunch. The staff was so friendly and the food was amazing! Very reasonably priced and really delicious. The waitresses were very accomodating. The Ellington has a super laid back feel and the decor is really coastal, meets rustic. I want to go back in better weather to see if they have the windows open. It's a really airy feel because the restaurant is on a street corner so there are 2 walls of full size window panels."

  • "The Ellington has a great pub-atmosphere. The food was surprisingly good. Burgers, salads, fish and chips on the menu. The staff was very friendly. It was too noisy for much of a conversation, but it would be fun for groups. Two huge TVs were at the bar, which had a lively scene. A great find on the Upper West Side."

  • "First visit was really nice. Very friendly, low key, tasty food. I four-starred it only in comparison to fancy joints. Five stars for what it is, a good neighborhood place with a warm atmosphere, nice folks and friendly service."

  • "The Ellington is a very pleasant spot, with music many nights. It is very family friendly especially during brunch at which it seemed nearly every table had a baby or child or two. Noise level is moderate. The staff very pleasant and efficient. Wehad delicious burgers and lovely omlettes( their spelling). Will definitely try for dinner soon."

  • "This place has come on strong since opening fairly recently. The menu is interesting and the food is excellent. The service is very good, too. It can be a little noisy, but the place has a nice energy to it, and it's fun to go there!"

  • "One of the few places you can get a great fish and chips! And awesome cocktails. My favorite: the new fashioned. Finally, I love that they are named after one of the greatest jazz musicians Of all time."

  • "This is a cozy, friendly neighborhood spot. I've only been there twice so haven't tried many things on the menu, but I can say that the potatoes were excellent - both the home fries at brunch and the french fries for dinner. Other than that, my eggs were good, and the bison burger was OK. I will be back to try other options. Unfortunately I don't remember our server's name, but she was super nice and did a great job. My only complaint is that it can get quite noisy, so best to avoid the peak times."

  • "The Food is fantastic, the ambiance is great and when there is live music it makes it a great find in the city!"

  • "I got the herb half-roasted chicken which was ok. The chicken was well cooked, but bland. The carrots were delicious. Lots of mashed potatoes. It was supposed to come with gravy, but it didn't. I'd forgotten till someone in my party asked me. Gravy would have helped, but the food was good and the service very friendly. Little chilly inside, temperature-wise, and as the bar people consumed more beer, it got a little loud but acceptably so. We had been looking forward more to a restaurant experience. But if you need a pub with great burgers (according to one in our party), this is a great place."

Food was AMAZING and the drinks were great!!! Can't wait to come here for brunch. It definitely made for an enjoyable birthday."

  • "I made a Thanksgiving reservation for 5 people without even knowing the restaurant. After doing a lot o research, we decided to try it and there was no disappointment!! The place is like a small pub with a bistro feeling. The staff was very kind and sympathetic!! The food was amazing and very well served!! As it was Thanksgiving, we got the price-fix menu that included one appetizer, one main dish, one dessert and a glass of wine: everything was delicious!! And, for our treat, when we first got there, there were hershey's chocolates over the table, waiting on us!! We couldn't ask for more!!!"

  • "Not wanting to cook or travel that far from home with my mom, the Ellington was a wonderful choice and we left with very few regrets. The appetizer and entree were fantastic and well-portioned; we couldn't have asked for better options. The only misstep was the dessert option which left A LOT to be desired. The two options, pumpkin pie or oreo cheesecake, both had serious flaws. The top of the pie crust was almost burnt and visually unappealing, and the filling was rather blah as well. The top, darker layer of chocolate on the oreo cheesecake was way too bitter and not because it was supposed to be dark chocolate (I LOVE dark chocolate). After a fabulous meal, the dessert misstep was noticeable but I would still recommend the Ellington!"

  • "Perfect for our family thanksgiving meal while visiting our daughter at NYU. It's a cab or long subway ride from Greenwich Village, but for the price and quality of the meal it was great. Loved getting to see another part of the city, too. If you're near Columbia is just a 10 minute walk to get here. The servers and setting created a homey feel for our Thanksgiving celebration!"

  • "My brother and I live far from family (a 24 hour drive!) so flights home were spent on Christmas. We wanted to do something special: NYC was the perfect ticket. We had two important things on our list: Macy's Parade and the perfect place to have our Thanksgiving meal. We found it at The Ellington. The price was perfect and the meal looked outstanding! We dressed up for our special evening and even treated ourselves to a cab ride there. The staff was amazing and SO polite! They made us feel so warm and at home. The food was delectable (I wanted to lick the bowl of carrot and ginger soup!). Thank you for making our Thanksgiving one to always remember. It is my personal agenda to tell everyone I know about your exquisite restaurant! Amy & John"

  • "They were very accomodating to children and provided a coloring book during brunch service. Their food was mediocre. My friend asked for a medium burger and got one well done. I got the pulled pork toast with spicy hollandaise. The sauce was tasty but the pork was flavorless. Some of my potatoes were underdone."

  • "The Ellington had just what I was looking for for my friend's birthday: affordable prices; good variety of sandwiches, burgers, salads, and entrees; and an amazing environment that felt so homey in the city but still classy. I got the Bison burger and not only was it delicious, they were very accommodating to my gluten-free requests: no bun and substituted my side for broccoli rabe."

  • "I was lucky enough to book a table for 16 the day before my birthday and they were so accommodating everyone thoroughly enjoy their food. I ordered the sweet potato salad which was delicious but small so I had no trouble adding pancakes which were light fluffyand great we even had. More people come later and they accomadated them as well. and then to top it off they're pumpkin cheesecake was to die for. Great time great birthday thanks ellington"

  • "Dinner was food, probably better for brunch. Nothing special. Dinner was busy don't think kitchen could accommodate all the people. Nachos were bland. Dinner took forever, food was cold but good."
