A word from Elephant Walk, The - Cambridge
The Elephant Walk serves Award-Winning Cambodian and French cuisine. We also feature strong VEGETARIAN and GLUTEN-FREE menus! With so much depth and breadth to our menus, both exotic and familiar, we have something for just about everyone. Cambodian cooking is beautiful and delicious, but still rare in America. Less hot and sweet than Thai, richer and more complex than Vietnamese, the complex spice pastes that are the foundation of many Cambodian dishes reflect Cambodia’s Indian ancestry. Our Cambodian menu features both traditional Cambodian dishes and originals created by our Chef/Owners Longteine and Nadsa de Monteiro, a Cambodian mother-daughter team born and raised in Phnom Penh. Why French too? Cambodia was a French colony for a century, ending in the 1950s. Consequently, our chef-owners were French-educated and grew up speaking French and enjoying French cuisine too. In other words, our Cambodian-and-French theme is an authentic reflection of…us!Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Excellent food. Loved the fact that the entrees had lots of veges as part of the dish and not just a token green thing. We'll be back! "

  • "Elephant Walk is the gem of Porter Square, by far. We have come here several times and never been disappointed."

  • "Words cannot explain how special the staff at Elephant Walk made my lunch date. Everything from the service to the dishes (the peach-pork tenderloin dish and the fruit-almond lace cup dessert were especially tasty) was so wonderful. Will definitely be coming back here for future meals with friends! Katrina"

  • "Our first time at Elephant Walk, and we loved it. The place is beautiful, very classy but also fun. The service was perfect--attentive but not intrusive. The food was excellent. Unique flavors, very fresh. I highly recommend Elephant Walk."

  • "We went by public transportation and it was very convenient."

  • "We waited an hour to be seated after making a reservation, another half hour for the bill, which was calculated wrong, only to check our bank statements the next day and been charged twice. DO NOT GO."

  • "The waitress was really good. She substituted a dish on restaurant week with no hesitation. She actually recommended it. However they forgot one part of my sons dish, although she did put it in a container to take home, when we pointed it out to her."

  • "the combination of french and cambodian here is a little disappointing. I like cambodian food and I like french food separately, so I thought the combination would be fantastic. Turned out, French end was good, but cambodian end fell short. I'd still recommend going and I'd go back myself. The service was slow considering the house wasn't full the time I went"

  • "I love the interior of this restaurant. It's romantic, colorful, and relaxing -- perfect for a date. For appetizer I had a curry-like dish made with coconut milk which was delicious and probably the highlight of my meal there. For my entree I had a shrimp and vegetables dish which I felt was a bit too salty, while my friends had pork or beef dishes which looked better. For dessert I had the mousse which was delicious, and the gelato was great too. Overall it was a decent dining experience, with the environment being the best part. Recommended for a date or just dining with a few good friends."

  • "Awesome (and many!) gluten-free and vegan/vegetarian options, super flavorful, interesting dishes. The gluten-free options were the reason why we wanted to check out this place during restaurant week, and everything was amazing, right down to the flour-less chocolate cake. Salad was delicious, and I tried a dish called the Namya - so tasty. Both the lamb chops and the braised beef short ribs were tender and extremely flavorful. Our server was super sweet, and we didn't feel rushed, as all the courses were timed perfectly. We will be back for sure, next time we are in the area!"

  • "I have been dying to go to this restaurant for years and was sad to hear the Waltham location closed. However, the Cambridge location was very easy to get to by train. What better time to try this restaurant then during Dine Out Boston. There are tons of vegetarian dishes to choose from as well as many meat options. The desert was amazing. And the appetizers were very good. Overall this restaurant was very good. I would recommend it to anyone and I definitely will be going back."

  • "This was my 3rd Elephant Walk experience .. first time at the Cambridge location. The menu is so eclectic and interesting, it's difficult to decide what to order! The offer very a good 3 and 4 course fix priced menu."

  • "It has French and Cambodian menus, which are quite different so it is quite original. I highly recommend the caramelized beef it was divine! The service is attentive but discreet and the food is delicious"

  • "On a warmer than usual winter Thursday night I enjoyed a delicious dinner at mother Elephant Walk. My chicken dish was delightfully savory with just the right touch if spices. The atmosphere was cozy and relaxed and my wait person was quite attentive. We had a great time."

  • "I went their with my wife on Valentines Day and it was absolutely lovely. I wish that the entree was bigger but that has more to do with my appetite and the type of cuisine than anything else. The dessert was the most delicious thing I've had in years. Would recommend it to anyone!"

  • "Difficult to place orders; one server asked if we wanted the check and we hadn't gotten our entrees yet. Dig a Pony drink was terrible. Despite description entailing cherry liqueur and chocolate bitters with muddled mint and bourbon, I only tasted bourbon. When I finally got a different drink, I ended up with 2 of them from 2 different servers. Nataing was very good but crispy rice cakes are a little weird / too starchy. Seared tuna with contrasting cream sauces: incredible. Good gluten-free options (fresh vegetables, on-theme, not overdone!). Unfortunately when getting dessert to go they skipped the cardamom ice cream that was supposed to go with the flourless chocolate cake. Prix fixe menu is a good deal. Get the wine; skip cocktails."

  • "Great restaurant. Different menu than anything else in the area and had a great wine list that didn't break the bank. I will go back!"

  • "I find it rare that when you go out with a group, everyone completely loves everything they order. We shared an appetizer of muscles that were phenomenal. We actually had two versions and I enjoyed the one with a touch of cream better. My friend that enjoyed the spicy version almost took a bath in the broth. The tasting menu of 3 or 4 was perfect for many in the group. The meals were beautiful without sacrificing serving size or amazing taste!!! We all left full and extremely happy! Our server was perfect, attentive to allergies, available and responsive without hovering. She was very friendly and nice. Overall- I have not had an experience in dining so positive and enjoyable in a long time. Thank you Elephant Walk!"

  • "We have dined here before and always love the food. We like that they have a prix-fixe menu and a regular menu all of the time. The wait staff is excellent. We were not as happy with this visit because they changed waitresses during our meal (we did get there before 5pm for dinner). The food was still wonderful!"

  • "It had been several years dice I had been at the Elephant Walk plus it was another location. We were thrilled with our experience and will definitely be back. The food was fresh, served hot and very interesting. Portion were perfect. We had a coupon and mentioned it to us when we sat down. Sometimes that effects the service but our waitress could not have been more pleasent or efficient. We gave her a great tip. We have already recommended it to our friends."

  • "We went one early snowy evening with kids. The kids menu was probably the best part of the meal as our kids are foodies and loved getting grown up choices. My husband and I are pretty seasoned indian/asian food so the spice level and sophistication was just good. We had the tasting menu which was a great no brainer. Expected it to have "chefs" bests. My soup was bland and boring and my husbands meal was not tasty enough for him. We were there many years ago and thought it great so either our taste buds have gotten too picky or the level of "wow" has gone down."

  • "Love the ginger smash, the pear and parsnip soup was fabulous and the beet arugula salad yummy. But I haven't had an entree that I like yet. My husband loved the soup and the mussels but his entree was dry and over cooked as was my salmon. If we go again we will just do the first two courses and maybe just do one entree I'm the search to find one that we like. But I don't think we will return too soon. There are places that we like better."

  • "elephant walk has the most delicious elegant sauces! Makes me want to go to cooking school to try to create that magnificence at home."

  • "I've been eating at the Elephant Walk since it was a little basement hole in the wall in Union Square. I still like it quite a lot but . . . whenever I go there I usually want to order the same thing, and that gets rather boring. I've tried ordering other things, but always come back to the same dish. This tells me that the menu needs a little update, something new, some more variety. I was surprised and delighted the first time I ate there--I would like to feel that way again!"

  • "We were late because the New Year's Eve concert went longer than we expected. But they served us without rushing us. Alicia was fantastic. So sweet & competent. The food was delicious. A wonderful evening!"

  • "We really enjoyed our first visit to the Elephant Walk Restaurant in Cambridge. We both ordered off the 4 course fixed price menu and really enjoyed each course. We were pleasantly suprised with the quality of the food and our serivce - especially given that it was New Years Eve. The ambience upstairs was nice, unfortunately we were seated in a rather plain room downstairs. Will likely be returning."

  • "We had a wonderful time at The Elephant Walk last Monday. We were immediately seated. Service was excellent without being intrusive. The waitress was informative and accomodated our order by splitting a large bowl of soup for the two of us. Food came at the proper time som everything was hot and fresh. Portions were the right size. Good choices for meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans.... We have been to the Boston location before and found this location very good (much nicer than the recently closed Waltham restaurant)."

  • "Service was intermittent/slow. Reservation was at 9 PM. They closed at 10 PM. The place wasn't busy, the server was pleasant but the drinks, dessert, and check took a long time to come. The soup-parsnip & pear, mussels app. and entrees were excellent. My wife's Creme Brulee was served cold? We never had that before. The carpets definitely needed a good cleaning, debris all over them everywhere, looked very unsightly."

  • "I want to be able to give four and a half stars -- something between "very good" and "outstanding," such as "excellent." Elephant Walk provides a creative combination of Cambodian and French food. Everything that the four of us had ranged from very good to excellent. No problem serving two vegetarians and two carnivores. Lovely Cambodian appetizers with a French name (rouleaux) as well as French desserts, bracketing both French and Cambodian entrees. Only my cassoulet was a bit disappointing -- a little too soupy, slightly too fatty, and a bit too heavy on the beans for my taste. (Yes, I know, that's all probably authentic; it still rated a "very good.")"

  • "Service was excellent. Food was timed well. Everyone enjoyed themselves. Looking forward to coming back soon. This review is more favorable than our last experience. I think the management was better on this evening as well. Our last visit had an issue and management never got involved. No one ever contacted us on our private note either. Willing to still go back and you should too."

  • "When Elephant Walk first opened, it was inventive and unique. But the restaurant has become somewhat formulaic, perhaps trying to appeal to a larger audience."

  • "Haven't had that good Amok since I was in Cambodia! My group and I numbered four. We ordered a couple of appetisers (mussels and crepe au canard), and three entrees: the Amok Royal, the Quinoa risotto and the poulet mee siem; and shared it family style. Delicious!! We finished the meal sharing some desserts and, although I am a chocolate lush, the passion fruit mousse was simply divine. The server was very obliging and very courteous too, so we will be going back! A great neighbourhood jaunt that's fit for foodies, and well-travelled ones at that!"
